An Opportunity to Make New Friends
Beginning June 10, we will begin our summer schedule. This includes our two regular liturgies
with a wrinkle in the starting times. The first liturgy is at 8 a.m., and the second liturgy begins at 9:30 ‘ish. One of the features of
summertime is our fellowship half hour on the front patio of the church at 9:00 am. This is
the opportunity to mix and mingle with friends between services that you may have not seen
for a while. There will be lots of good refreshments and time to visit.
I am extending to you this invitation for ministry. Consider making an introduction
of yourself to four or five people each week that you may not have previously met. A privilege
of being a part of a growing family is to extend your fellowship to others. If you are not
accustomed to doing this, you may be surprised to discover something not only about the people
you meet, but also about yourself. Most assuredly you will experience the body of
Christ in a special way.
I would be very interested in your feedback from this experience. The Pentecost season is a time to grow in grace. May the spirit move you!
In Christ, Pastor Bill Diehm

5th Saturday worship with
Prayers for Healing Join Us every “5th Saturday” in 2012!
The next date is June 30, 2012 We will include within our 5:30 p.m. liturgy,
a service of healing which includes the option of laying on of hands and anointing with oil.
The service will continue our usual format of song, word and Holy Communion, and emphasis will be placed on God’s desire to make us whole as we gather and as we live our
lives at home and in the world.
It is time for our semi-annual food drive for North Side Common
Ministry Food Bank which serves 900+ people a month. The bags with
suggested food items will be distributed on June 10 and 17 and
are to be returned by June 24.
AED REMINDER
In April, 15 people were trained in CPR and in the use of an AED, it became apparent that not everyone knows the location
of our AEDs.
IT IS TIME FOR A REMINDER!!!!!!
1. The cabinet containing the AED on the main level is located just outside
the sanctuary door which is to the right of the pulpit (in the rear main entrance
hallway).
2. The cabinet containing the AED on the lower level is in the hallway above the gym. It is across from the elevator.
OUR HELPING MINISTRIES St. John’s has many helping ministries – your help is needed!
Family Emergency Fund This fund is maintained for two purposes: to provide confidential financial help to
families in crisis, and to serve as an ongoing fund for funeral lunches. Helping Hands Fund This fund has a current balance
of over $4,000 and was established to assist in community emergencies or disasters. The intent is that Council or our Pastors
would have ready access to these monies for quick distribution, and then the congregation would be asked to replenish the fund.
Heart of St. John’s This helping ministry provides non-financial services for those in need, such as meals or rides to doctor’s
appointments. It is run by the Social Ministry committee. There is always a need for volunteers to provide these ongoing services for our
members. Please contact Shirley McIlvried if you are interested. Deborah Ministry This ministry provides a welcoming gift & a meal to families with new babies. Barb Harris & Dawn Andersson handle this
joyful work. If you know of a family with a recent new addition, please contact the church office. We don’t like to miss anyone!
STEWARDSHIP STEW
After a shaky Spring with extreme variants in temperature, we are on the cusp of a beautiful summer. The masses are heading to yards and gardens with
trowel in hand and a pocket full of seed packets. Yup, ‘tis the season of wishes and dreams and sun damage!
The media is full of warnings about taking precautions to avoid sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer. One of the most
heartfelt pleas came from Bill Cowher, former Steelers coach, whose wife died from melanoma, in 2010, at age 54. Coach
Cowher has helped launch “Melanoma Exposed” an educational campaign to encourage more people to get screened for the
deadly form of skin cancer, which annually causes 5,800 deaths among men and 3,000 among women in the United States.
Now Cowher and his three daughters are diligent about taking precautions to protect against melanoma. That means using sunscreen, wearing hats, conducting self-examinations, and,
perhaps most importantly, getting a visual screening. Every year about 70,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma. If caught early it is very treatable, but once it is in the lymph nodes, cure
rates drop dramatically.
The key to preventing deaths from melanoma is to encourage people, especially those with risk factors such as light skin, family history, moles or previous cases of sunburn, to examine their own
skin and that of their loved ones for melanomas. An annual examination by a dermatologist is also an excellent idea,
especially for those with risk factors.
Enjoy the summer and enjoy the sun, but be well and be safe.
You are loved!!!
WE ARE BLESSED to have many new faces in
our St. John’s family. Since our last church
directory is four years old, it seems like a good
time to plan for a new updated pictorial of the
people and activities that make St. John’s a special
place. Lifetouch Studios, who did our last
directory, has joined forces with Olan Mills Studio and we have
engaged them to prepare our new directory. We will be setting up
appointments for early fall, to include dates in August and
September. This timetable will accommodate those who wish to be
photographed after they are home from summer vacations as well as
families who want to have students home before they head back to
college included in their family portrait. Watch
for more details as the time for photographing
gets closer. A church directory is a great way to
put names to the smiles we have become
accustomed to seeing each Sunday. We want to
be sure your smile is included.
Greetings from St. John's Literacy Mission to the World

SUMMER READING CAMPS ARE COMING—June 11-21st at St. John’s of High-
land. Christian Literacy BLOOM Program to assist children entering or completing Kin-
dergarten (ages 5-7) in acquiring basic reading skills. Call Dr. Bill (412-363-3777) for
details
immediately! CAMP AGAPE, the Lutheran Camp in Hickory PA will hold another series
of Reading Camps (two live-in and one day camp) using the Christian Literacy materials.
See www.campagape.org for complete information. Call (724) 356-2308. This program
has been successfully operating for five years. They also have a Math Camp and an Art
and Science Camp. These camps are very affordable. Other local summer reading
efforts will be held in Washington, PA (Lemoyne Community Center), Resurrection
Lutheran in Weirton, WV, St. Andrew’s Lutheran Moon TWP., Bethany Baptist in
Homewood-Brushton, Trinity Luth. in East Pittsburgh & of course, CLA’s Oakland
Academy of Reading.
THE BIBLE BELT OF CALIFORNIA (?!?!) (Yes, according to a caller, there is one
located 3 hours north of Los Angeles and two hours south of San Francisco, in the
agricultural country.) A church there has been holding summer reading programs for
75-100 youngsters for the past three years. The caller was very excited to discover our
CHRISTIAN Literacy materials on the internet and immediately ordered a set
to try before summer.
CAMBODIA TO SEE CHRISTIAN LITERACY MATERIALS: The Alliance Church
in Allegheny Center will be taking Christian Literacy materials on its regular mission trips
to Cambodia --- after being convinced that they are just what is needed to be a part of their
English as a Second Language program for university students there.
GOODBYE TO “JACK” After almost a year and a half of twice-weekly English and
mentoring efforts, Dr. Bill must say goodbye to his friend “Jack”, the Korean Customs
Officer, and his family. “Jack” has just completed his Master’s degree at Pitt and will
return to his normal duties in Korea in early June. Dr. Bill will miss the many hours
of discussion of 5,000 years of Korean history and customs (including “the nine-tailed
fox”), American customs and politics, and, of course, a great deal of explanation of
Christianity (to a “searching Buddhist). There will never be another “Jack”.
We will miss him, and we pray that his "searching" will continue as God leads. RECYCLE FOR READING PROJECT. Please continue to donate used printer toner
cartridges and cell phones to help the Children’s Literacy Ministry. The very kind church
office staff will pass the donations on to us. Because of your “recycling” and that of other
churches, over $1000 has been provided in the past twelve months.
Is your child having problems with basic reading skills? Christian Literacy staff
members will be happy to discuss the situation with you. Want to be trained to work with
your own child in improving basic reading skills? Call 412-364-3777 and talk to Dr.
Bill. As always, training of tutors is free.
Your help is needed to make more individuals, churches, and agencies aware of our existence and services. If you know of anyone, anywhere in the world (literally) who might
find CLA of interest, please provide them with our website (www.christianliteracy.com)

BAKERS FOR
MEALS ON WHEELS
It’s that time again – we will be baking for
West View MOW for the month of JUNE.
They are already looking forward to our
donations. Choose from the following: 2-3 dozen cupcakes,
cookies, brownies, angel food, pound or coffee cake or you may
buy your donation. Please take your baked goods to the down-
stairs kitchen on or before your date. If you want to deliver
during the week, please put in freezer. MARK ALL
BAKED GOODS “MEALS ON WHEELS”. If there is time,
please wrap goods individually, this saves the West View staff
a lot of time., but is not a must. If the Sunday assigned to you
is not convenient, feel free to choose another Sunday. Please
call Jean Guca at 412-367-1990 if you have any questions.
Thanks so much for your kindness in helping. It is truly
appreciated. We are scheduled to bake again in October.
