Fourth Sunday of Easter– Jn 10:27-30


Jesus said: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”

Today’s reading offers a significant message: The emergence of early Christianity was at times

contentious, as Gentile Christians and Jewish communities struggled to make sense of one another, often within the hostile climate of Roman persecution. Christians today should read New Testament stories that present Christians and Jews at odds with each other as the normal tensions that often occur between people, and not take them at face value as a some kind of judgment against Jews or Judaism, to whom Christians owe so very much.

Fourth Sunday of Easter 4° Domingo de Pascua April 17 / 17 de Abril

Brief commentary on the Gospel On this fourth Sunday of the season of Easter the readings speak to us of the grace of God and our call to respond to that grace. The gospel reading from John sums up in a few profound words more about this intimate relation-ship between Jesus – “the good shepherd who has laid down his life for his sheep” – and the flock who listens to his voice. The Christian experience is one in which God’s extraordinary and transforming saving grace has been felt through a revelation of Jesus Christ, through his nearness, his touch, his encounter, his voice calling out our name, speaking his gospel personally to us, calling us directly to follow him. Such an experience so deeply transforms a person’s deepest self that everything changes: perspectives, values, attitudes, way of life, character, behavior, actions – heart and soul. The grace of God is also an experience of being “known personally by God” and of “belonging to God” and of being “in God’s hand” protected by God: each of these aspects of the experience of grace are expressed in the words of Christ as he describes his love for ‘his’ sheep. We feel drawn into the divine relationship between the Father, the Son and the Spirit, made a part of the divine life. Today’s readings take on their definitive dimension within the spirit of the Easter season, for the cross and glorious resurrection of the Lord Jesus is the ultimate expression of divine grace in our lives, in our world, and in all creation.

O, Lord God of hosts, O God of our salvation, O God who alone workest wonders, do thou now look down with mercy and compassion on thy humble servants and out of love for mankind hearken and have mercy on us. Look with mercy, we pray thee, O Lord, on those of our sons and daughters who now serve in our Armed Forces, and who in obedience to their superiors have for our sakes placed themselves in harm’s way. Grant that those who request the protection of thy right hand may be overpowered by no adverse force, and may the invited defense of thy mighty power shield thy faithful sons and daughters. Watch over them, O Lord, and bring them back safely to those who love them. Grant courage and steadfast faith to them and to those who long for their return. Bring a quick and bloodless end to these conflicts and spare the lives of the innocent. Grant no increase to the numbers of widows and orphans and relieve the privations of the bereaved and wounded, whether wounded in body or in soul. En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los judíos: “Mis ovejas escuchan mi voz; yo las conozco y ellas me siguen. Yo les doy la vida eterna y no perecerán jamás; nadie las arrebatará de mi mano. Me las ha dado mi Padre, y

él es superior a todos, y nadie puede arrebatar-las de la mano del Padre. El Padre y yo somos uno”.

La lectura de hoy nos dos ideas

El surgimiento del cristianismo fue, a veces,

contencioso, según los gentiles y las comunida-des judías luchaban por entenderse mutuamente a veces en el clima hostil de las persecuciones romanas. Los textos del Nuevo Testamento que presentan a los cristianos y judíos como opositores deben leerse hoy como relatos de las tensiones normales que a menudo ocurren entre personas, y no tomarlos como un juicio contra los judíos o el Judaísmo, a quienes los cristianos le deben tanto.

La relación entre Dios e Israel, y Dios y la Iglesia, es a veces expresada en la Biblia con la imagen de pastor y rebaño, una imagen que evoca un sentido de confianza, fe y amor hacia Aquel que lo ha dado todo por nosotros.

Reflexión Dominical


En este cuarto domingo del tiempo de Pascua las lecturas nos hablan de la gracia de Dios y nuestro llamado a responder a esa gracia. El evangelio de Juan resume en pocas palabras esta íntima relación entre Jesús – “el buen pastor que ha entregado su vida por sus ovejas” – y el rebaño que escucha su voz.

La experiencia cristiana es una en que la extraordinaria y transformadora gracia salvífica nos llega a través de la revelación en Jesucristo, a través de su cercanía, su toque, su encuentro, su voz llamándonos por nombre, hablándonos personalmente su evangelio, llamándonos directamente a seguirlo. Una experiencia tan profunda transforma lo más hondo en la persona de tal modo que todo cambia: perspectivas, valores, actitudes, estilo de vida, carácter, manera de actuar, acciones – el corazón y alma.

La gracia de Dios se experimenta también como “ser conocido personalmente por Dios” y de “pertenecer a Dios”, y de estar “en las manos de Dios” protegido por Dios: cada uno de estos aspectos de la experiencia de la gracia son expresados en las palabras de Cristo cuando él describe su amor por ‘sus’ ovejas. Nos sentimos atraídos hacia la relación divina entre el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu, invitados a formar parte de la vida divina.

Las lecturas de hoy toman una dimensión definitiva entre el espíritu del tiempo Pascual, porque la cruz y gloriosa resurrección del Señor Jesús es la absoluta expresión de la gracia divina en nuestras vidas, nuestro mundo, y en toda la creación.
