GROWING…TO LEARN ABOUT WORSHIP This is the last in a series of articles about the names and places of worship and about names of things in the church. This month, last but not least: PEOPLE!! Presiding Minister This person is always an ordained minister, authorized to preside at all sacraments and to preach the gospel with the authority granted by the Church. Except for vacations and other special occasions, this person must be the called pastor of the congregation. In the liturgy, this person speaks or sings the leading parts of prayers and when consecration of items is requested. Only an ordained presiding minister can baptize, offer benedictions, blessings, absolutions, commendations and anointing. This assures for the church an orderly discretion of the gifts of God, so that they are not given willy-nilly, but with Biblical and theological perspective for which the ordained are trained and set apart. While it is true any lay person is “able” to perform these acts, they are only approved with extenuating circumstances. Preaching is an office left primarily for the pastor of the congregation who calls the pastor to speak a comforting and challenging word to the flock present. PMs wear alb, cincture, stole, and chasuble (see last month’s issue). Assisting Minister. This is almost always a lay person, except when there are multiple clergy participating. AM’s at St. Peter’s can intone the Kyrie or Hymn of Praise, read the intercessory prayers, offertory prayer, help set the Table, read prayer after communion and may give the dismissal. They are dressed in alb (white robe) and sit next to the lectern. Lector. Reads Scripture, including Psalm. Acolyte. Light’s candles, handles offering, helps with communion and tries to stay awake while not chewing gum! Choir Historically, the purpose of the choir is to support the congregation’s singing by becoming a single voice. Often choirs are used to sing parts of liturgy, such as Kyrie or Psalm antiphons and Gospel Acclamations. Through the ages, they also have provided special music of their own. Choir Director. This person reads the Scripture for the day and selects appropriate music for the day, reviews the music and lead the choir to be ready to sing it. Each anthem is usually rehearsed for at lesat one month ahead of time. Organist. Plays the organ for liturgies of the church. This person also reads Scripture for the day and prepares music that is appropriate. At St. Peter’s, as with many churches, the organist and choir director are the same person. This requires a great deal of musical skill.

Ushers and Greeters. This is our welcoming Team. They see that people are prepared for the worship with worship folders, directions to restrooms, and other needs. The ushers are the ones who pass out plates for the offering.

PARTNERS IN YOUTH MINISTRY St. Peter’s and Camp Lutherlyn are partners in our youth ministry.

Lutherlyn provides a safe, healthy, fun, rich, enriching and loving outdoor experience for kids

to have a “Life-Changing Adventure in Faith.” The last two years St. Peter’s sent more kids to

camp than any other congregation! We support the camp as much as possible and have made

contributions to support them with a founding pastor (Shaulis), board members, donations, synod

benevolence commitments, weekly summer chaplains, regular contributions (like our recycle bins) and lots and lots of

campers (did I say that already?).

How We Get Our Kids to Camp Lutherlyn

1. Encourage your friends, neighbors and enemies to go.

2. Reach out to kids who need a life change.

3. Reach out to kids who can help others get a life change.

4. Financially make it possible with fundraisers and other funding sources.

5. No one is denied a week at camp for financial reasons.

6. No one is denied because you haven’t been to church in ages

We look forward next year to another year full of kids going to camp, of your pastor being a week 5 chaplain, to more

paper recycling for financial support, and our overall support of the camp as PARTNERS with us in youth ministry.

Pastor also will be taking 3 youth to a Confirmation Camp experience in June!

Fundraisers for camp have begun. PLEASE support these kids to get to camp this year. We thank many of you for your help in the past couple years.

WANT TO BE A SUPPORTER OF THE CAMP? TRINITY PINES CLUB!

For just $100 you can join and know you’ve been part of a movement to keep youth active in their faith and to continue to have “Life changing

adventures in Faith.” For more information, see Pr. Dave or call Lutherlyn at 724.865-2161.

“The heart overflows with gladness, and leaps and dances for the joy it has found in God. In this experience the Holy Spirit is active, and has taught us in the flash of a moment the deep secret of joy. You will have as much joy and laughter in life as you have faith in God.” Martin Luther
