Fr. Terry Keehan’s Column Oscar Romero was born in the town of Ciudad Bar-rios, El Salvador on August 15, 1917. At a very early age, Oscar showed great skills as a carpenter, but felt a strong calling to the priesthood. At age thirteen, he spoke with a Bishop about attending the local seminary. He was ordained in Rome in 1942 at the age of 25. Oscar had a quiet demeanor, yet his words were pow-erful and he became a legendary preacher. He was mar-tyred behind the altar as he preached in El Salvador on March 24, 1980 because of his critical and public stance against both the right-wing government forces and the left-ist guerrillas involved in his country’s civil war. On the 100 anniversary of Oscar Romero’s birth, his courage and actions cannot be forgotten as he is a model of what the Gospels speak of and what Pope Francis de-scribes as “smelling of the sheep.” He stood up for the lost and forgotten, much like the woman in today’s reading, an “outsider” asking for pity on her daughter tormented by a demon. He was relentless in his pursuit to speak the truth, even though he knew it would cost him his life. Oscar’s faith was deep. God has graced us with many people of deep faith, some have passed and some still living, who we can draw strength from, especially in times of unrest and uncertainty. Oscar’s quiet approach was de-scribed as “deliberate bearing, like one who is not hurried to arrive because he knows he will get there”. I’m quite certain he was a man of contemplation and deep prayer, never rushing to judgment, always seeking God’s guid-ance and wisdom. Oscar was a man of prayer and action. Holy Family is blessed to have an Adoration Chapel on the east side of our worship space and a Social Justice Wall on the west side. One is used for prayer and adora-tion, the other is used to inspire action. These two spaces were intentionally placed adjacent to our worship space and are complementary to each other. In terms of justice and mercy, prayer and action go hand-in-hand. There are many opportunities at Holy Family to act for justice and mercy, guided by prayer. As Director of the Human Con-cerns Community, our faith calls us to action guided by the seven principles of Catholic social teaching. All seven principles will be published in more detail in the bulletin throughout the year. Prayer and Action are two very important components of our faith. Let us continue to be inspired by servants such as Oscar Romero who lived life guided by prayer leading to significant action for the common good.

- Sue Geegan, Director of Human Concerns

In life, we all face unexpected hardships that can cause our faith to waver. Despite our best efforts, things can quickly go awry. Defeat may even be staring us right in the face. When confronted with insurmountable obstacles, what should our faith response be? On this 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we revisit the story of a Canaanite woman who had great faith that Jesus would heal her daughter. Similar to last week’s gospel of Jesus walking on water, we are reminded of what to do when we are confronted by life’s spiritual storms. A Canaanite woman presents herself to Jesus with a be-nevolent request, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” She recognized the value that Jesus offered and cared nothing for show, ap-proval, keeping tradition, or ritual purity, but simply knew the importance found in the tiniest things of God. She perseveres in her prayer. She “came and knelt before Him,” outwardly reinforcing her deep faith in Christ. We even hear her simple reply, “Lord, help me!” Jesus states, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” Instead of the Canaanite woman becoming offended, resentful, or angry, she simply replies, “…yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their master’s table.” Her faith shows a deep appreciation for who Jesus is, and becomes an act of perseverance, that God would do something wonderful in her midst. Jesus responds, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” The daughter of the Canaanite woman was immediately “healed from that very hour.” In today’s media, we hear the difficult plight of Syrian, Mid-dle Eastern and Muslim refugees being treated badly, much like the Canaanite woman. Many people tend to look on any migrants, poor, or person of different culture or color with dis-trust and dislike. Our own response may be similar to that of the apostles; we may simply wish God to make them just go away. But instead, our gospel reminds us that God chooses to be merciful and answer their prayers. Jesus expects us, His servants, to do the same. As we reflect this weekend on the Canaanite woman’s story of great faith, let us be inspired and challenged to assist others in exploring and deepening their own faith journey. May we support the Footsteps Ministry here at Holy Fam-ily who generously shares their wisdom and faith experi-ence through the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Please let the Footsteps Ministry know of anyone who might benefit from exploring their faith as a catechumen or candi-date. An Inquiry Session will be held Sunday, August 27th at 10:30am. Please keep the important work of this ministry in your prayers. - Fr. Rich Jakubik

Our local communities, state and nation continue to experience violence due to hatred and intolerance. All forms of violence must be condemned. As Pope Francis stated "It is neither a culture of confrontation or

conflict which builds harmony within and between peoples, but rather a culture of encounter and of dialogue; this is the only way to peace." As people of faith, may Holy Family Catholic Community

have the courage to pursue encounter and dialogue to overcome hatred and intolerance.

reflect on the readings.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time1. Have you ever had to make a difficult choice in removing someone from their duties because you thought it was the right thing to do? How did you feel afterward? What role did your faith play in this?2. In the second reading, Paul realizes that he needs to stop trying to understand what God is doing. Are there times that you have felt the same way, and why?3. What could be some reasons that only Peter was able to proclaim that Jesus is the Messiah?4. Why did Jesus sternly order the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah? How hard would it have been to keep such a secret?

SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTIONAs Peter was given the authority to “bind and loose”, we have been given the authority to bring the presence of Christ into our homes and larger community. How have you exer-cised your authority as an advocate for the poor?

The Ministry of Us as Assembly-Part IV

If your community’s liturgy is alive and beautiful, take care lest you begin to worship your worship; This is idolatry. If your community’s liturgy needs help – offer it!Model your community’s liturgy on Christ’s divine service;not on the experience of neighboring parishes. The liturgy your parish offersis a mirror of the life your parish lives:Look into that mirror and see what you will see;then do what must be done.

When visitors praise and thank youfor the worship you have offered, take delight in the blessing they have received, and rejoice in the workthe Lord has accomplished through you.Be faithful in the work you do,For through it the Lord saves his people. -Preparing for Liturgy, Austin Fleming

When Someone is Ill, including Yourself If you or your loved one is sick or unable to come to church, we have Ministers of Care who will visit and bring Holy Communion. It is important for our community to stay in touch with our sick and/or “young at heart” and tend to everyone’s spiritual needs. Whatever the length of time one is sick and/or homebound and unable to attend Mass, Ministers of Care are available to visit. For some, it is a brief time; for others, the visits occur regularly. In either case, there is one Minister of Care assigned who develops a personal relationship with the person being visited. To arrange for a visit for yourself or for your loved one, contact Mimi Ferlita, Associate Director of Liturgical Life: Pastoral Care 847-907-3425.

Due to privacy laws in Illinois, hospitals and nursing facilities do not inform us that you were admitted. Please inform them that you are a member of Holy Family Catholic Community.

You’re never too old for fun, according to Dr. Peg?

It’s harder than it looks, trust me!”

“Who came up with this idea Dad?”

I DECLARE SPLASHFEST

one of Dr. Peg’s best ideas ever!

If you thought SplashFest was fun then you won’t want to miss Family Faith’s Celebration of Family Life, Sunday, Sept. 10 beginning with Mass at 4 pm followed by barbecue & entertainment. Live DJ, contests, raffle, prizes, and it’s all FREE !

was the theme of our first-ever Jr. High Summer Service Lock-in at Holy Family. By all accounts it is definitely an event the teens would gladly do again and recommend their friends try. I guess that means it’s a keeper. Changes for next summer – B I G G E R. Our hats off to the teen pioneers who took the risk and the leadership of Sara Dethloff and Mel Tomal.

Family & Teen Faith

Rite of Christian Initiation for Children/Teens “The sacraments of Christian initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist – lay the foundations of every Christian life.”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1212

At Holy Family we

see the sacraments of Christian Initiation – Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation – as intrinsically connected with each other comprising one process, which we call Christian initiation.

see Christian initiation as a developmental journey by which a person, no matter their age, comes to a new understanding of him/herself as a disciple of Christ and member of His Church.

understand Christian initiation is “… a fruitful blend of instruction and formation in the faith; it progresses through gradual

stages, it unfolds the Church’s rites, symbols, and biblical signs; and it incorporates the participants into the Christian community of faith and worship.” (National Directory for Catechesis 2005, pg. 116).

Like many parishes today

More and more families with older children (between 6-14 years of age) are approaching our parish community asking to be baptized.

More and more families have older children who have been baptized in a Christian Church other than Roman Catholic and now wish to make a Profession of Faith and receive the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.

Still others have older children who were baptized as infants but have never received any formal catechesis but who now wish to receive the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.

In the past, both here at Holy Family and at other parishes, these families would be dealt with on a case by case basis and each child/teen given private instruction. Today, our approach is much different. The Church gives us guidelines about how to initiate these children telling us that ‘from the time of the apostles, becoming a Christian has been accomplished by a journey within the community of believers and initiation is marked by several stages and steps (or liturgical rites). To accomplish this we have a robust RCIA process for those over 18 and family centered RCIC process for children and teens.

Participation in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children/teens at Holy Family involves Regular attendance at Mass with the weekend assembly Participation in a formal religious education class at grade level (Family Faith or HFCA)

o For Family Faith online Registration click here. o For an RCIC Child/Teen Inquirer Form click here.

Participation in the eight (8) RCIC sessions with a parent(s) o For 2017-18 RCIC schedule click here.

If you are interested or have questions contact Dr. Peg Hanrahan at [email protected]

Children and teens participating in the RCIC must be registered no later than Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017

2017-2018 Sees Record Enrollment in Early Childhood Classes

As HFCA begins our new school year, we are blessed to have a record number of 2-, 3-, and 4-year-old students enrolled in our early childhood program this year!

Many families have heard about HFCA through referrals from friends, neighbors and Holy Family parishioners who have given witness to our exceptional teachers, play-based curriculum, hands-on science lab, and most importantly, our faith-Þlled environment where caring and principled virtues are modeled for our youngest learners.

This year HFCA offers 11 early childhood classes, and while many classes have a waiting list, we still have a few openings in our 2-year-old preschool Monday/Wednesday class and Friday only class.

For more information visit our website at https://goo.gl/WQ2xtF, or contact Deb Atkins to schedule a tour. ([email protected] or 847-907-3461)

As a candidate* in the International Baccalaureate World School Primary Years Programme, our teachers have access to best practices in early childhood education from a global community of educators. *Candidacy is not a guarantee of Þnal authorization.

Human Concerns Catholic Charities New Hope ApartmentsA Transitional Housing Program

for Homeless FamiliesJune, 2017 Update

Family #28Our family is a single African American female with three sons ages 14, 10, 8, two daughters ages 9 and 16 and a newborn granddaughter. This mom was fleeing a domestic violence situation. She currently works as a part-time CNA and is looking for more clients. Our mom was accepted into Section 8 housing in Gary, Indiana and is so happy to secure permanent housing for her large family. She is waiting for the inspection to get finalized and then she will move into her three bedroom townhome. Now that she is also caring for her granddaughter full time, she can focus more on her. She is currently working for an agency that sends her out to different facilities where she assists nurses. This agency has another location in the south near Gary where she hopes to work when she moves. She reports it will be about a 45 minute drive from where she will be living. She also reports that her daughter is not ready to be a full-time mom to her daughter. Our mom is now the legal guardian but still wants to involve her daughter with the care of her baby. She reports this has being very challenging.

Goals: • Save at least 3 to 6 months worth of rent • Staying compliant with new hope program for a smooth transition • Continue to save for the move-- to buy new furniture and pay for movers etc.

Family #29Our mom is a single white female with a three year old son who became homeless due to low income status. Client reported that while staying with her child’s father, they were not getting along, and they lived with his parents. Client reported that they stayed with friends for about two months before she went to the shelter in November, 2016.Our mom is still doing quite well in the program. She is, however, bothered that her boss has not yet changed her job title to a General Manager. She reports that the change will happen soon but she doesn’t know when. Our mom is still saving and working hard on im-proving her credit. Now that her insurance and food stamps are straight, things have been going more smoothly. She reports that she has been feeling great because she is back on her medication for ADD. She also reports that her child’s father continues helping out more and assisting her financially. Next month she will be able to save even more money.

Goals: • Save at least 3 to 6 months worth of rent • Continue to maintain her improved health • Continue working to achieve a promotion to General Manger

These families are very grateful to be a part of the extended family of the Peace and Justice Cluster Parishes. New Hope sends a gracious thank you

for the continued support!

Veterans Exiting Homelessness ProgramWe've all heard the stories. We've all seen the pictures of the homeless veterans struggling to regain their footing when returning to civilian life. They risked their lives for us. They could use a hand.....we can be "church" to them. The good news is that the Veteran's Administra-tion (VA) has a wonderful rent subsidy program that moves the homeless veterans to apart-ments. However, household goods are not provided. In conjunction with Military Outreach USA, the parishioners of Holy Family can make a difference. On the weekend of August 19 and 20, we will be collecting the household items listed below. The VA will distribute 100% of the items collected to service veterans in the greater Chicagoland area by the following week's end. Please help us fill the collection baskets which will be located in the narthex. Thank you for your compassion and generosity! If you have questions, contact Jim Dunne at [email protected].
