From the Desk of Fr. Patrick Growing up as a child I was convinced that my father pouring his blood, sweat, and tears literally into our family garden. I would even to my friends this was the reason why our garden
grew so well. I was greatly disappointed when my father revealed to me the truth that all he did was prepare the soil, plant the seeds, and water. This simple formula has been now handed
down to me and I have come to realize that blood, sweat, and tears don’t make my garden
grow, neither does good soil, water, or sun. Don’t get me wrong they all help the process but there is more needed.
This fact, though spiritually meaningful, is often a truth that is forgotten or taken for granted. The truth that God’s grace and mercy are necessary for something to grow is often forgotten.
Yet, the truth remains, our ability to affect change in our lives, the good kind we call growing is not in our power. As we read in the Gospel reading from the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time
we hear Jesus Speak this parable, “This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man
were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and through it all the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how.” (Mk4:26)
Try as we might to be in charge, to take over, to command the good in us, or for that matter, all
that is good to be, well that’s something that happens sometimes even despite our actions.
There have been times in all our lives I am sure where this truth has been made very clear. We have had an encounter where there is no other explanation other than that God must have done
it. These moment, God moments, are much more blatant than the countless other moments
where God’s hand in growing the good goes unnoticed. This is why we must look to the fruits of God’s grace in our lives as proof of the growth.
I do not think that anyone can see a plant grow from one minute to the next but after a couple
days you can even see the change in its size or the presence of fruit on the plant. To see growth
the trick is to take a bigger picture. In our Church it is clear that God has been working to grow or develop our Church for so many, try not to allow your vision to get too narrow.
We at St. Theresa of Avilla can attest to God’s active work in our parish community simply by all the good that has been born by God in our parish. I am praying that as we begin the capital
campaign, “Raise Us UP”, we will be first mindful of what God has done with us thus far and
also what God desires to do with us in the future. As we begin to raise money for this campaign I pray that the fruits go beyond the fiscal needs of our parish but to the deeper
spiritual fruits of a deeper trust in the Lord.
In our Gospel Christ is speaking of the necessity of trusting that God is the one who will make
the growth happen. If we believe this to be true in our parish community than we must trust
that if it be God’s will for us to provide an elevator, air cooling system, handicapped
bathrooms, and a new entrance than he will make it work. However, let us not forget the blood,
sweat, and tears. I pray that we may all come together to provide for the needs of our
community so that God may continue to plant seeds of faith in our hearts for many more years
to come.
God Bless, Fr. Patrick
