Mark Lucas | Business ManagerWelcome back to everyone! We hope you all had a chance to have a restful holiday. It is lovely seeing all the children, parents and staff after our very long break. This year we welcome Sera Koth to the Student Support Team. Sera finished her seven year journey with her class at the end of 2017. We are lucky to have Sera working with us in Student Support. The Hub, in partnership with the Craft Group, are working to produce 100 dolls (of various forms) for the Waldorf 100 in July. We plan to donate these dolls but have not yet decided to whom. We welcome as many hands as possible and

donations of terry toweling, filling or any materials to make the dolls are always very welcome. As always, donations of books (all ages), puzzles, games and blocks (wooden) will be greatly received (to the Front Office or the Hub). For the next three weeks Nicole Ash will be working with students while Kelly Neumann is on leave. Please feel free to call and make an appointment with me regarding Student Support via the Front Office if you have any questions.

Primary Lunchtime activities at the Hub.....

Coming up in March is the Mount Barker Show Scarecrow Hunt, this involves local schools and community groups in the Hills creating scarecrows to be displayed around the local area, before going to the Show on the 24th of March. We are invited to design and build two scarecrows for the competition, which gives us a great opportunity to use our creativity and make a piece of art that reflects our school community to be shared with the wider community. Students are invited to bring ideas, enthusiasm and materials to the Hub veranda on Mondays and Fridays at lunchtime, where we will have making sessions. We are looking for natural materials and creative ideas, all are welcome.

We have now completed our Form Drawing Main Lesson, and will begin working with the letters and their sounds. We are settling into the new routines well and making new friends. The children love the class one play area, and today we welcomed a new friend - Fluffy. “Thank you Mount Barker Fodder Store.”

Class 6 began the year with a three day aquatics camp at Pt. Noarlunga in the first week of school. There were smiles all around as the students had a taste of snorkeling, surfing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, wind surfing and body boarding.

For Orienteering lesson we walked and estimated the perimeter of the school which we then checked against Google Earth.

Class 9 Gardening recently made Bruschetta using tomatoes grown in the school garden. The students planted them last spring when they were in Class 8. The tomatoes were very delicious especially being picked ripe from the bushes. It was a great way to end the day!

Class 9 students tread their way to the ancient art of wine making. The wine will eventually end up as an important ingredient in making a healing cold cream. The students learn how to create a herbal tincture with the alcohol and use that in making a calendula ointment. Through direct experience some of these processes and qualities of organic substances are understood.

Badminton is an awesome sport to do during term 1; because it is an indoor sport, it enables us to be active doing sport out of the heat of the summer sun.

Badminton tends to be regarded as a winter sport, and my busiest terms are usually term 2 & 3. However, badminton is played throughout the year in SA (and other states) and it is weather friendly due to being indoors, so we rarely get matches cancelled.

Last year was my busiest year yet working in SA schools, and sadly I had to decline some offers of work due to a full schedule; those schools had to seek other providers (which in some cases did not work out so well). So if you are intending doing badminton, please get in touch with me early, so that I can find a place for you in my schedule in advance.
