May 17, 2020 Sixth Sunday of Easter
If you have never seen the movie The Little Mermaid then you are probably the
wrong age, not a girl, don’t recognize the name Disney, or you just aren’t into
mermaids. I can’t remember the first time a saw The Little Mermaid but I remem-
ber being enchanted by the gorgeous animated underwater scenes and the inspir-
ing, uplifting music. Seeing a large adorable crab playing the bongos was such a
treat!
The heroine is a lovely mermaid named Ariel. She sings a song called Part of
Your World that speaks about wanting to leave the life you have behind and
change yourself into something, someone, new and exciting and free.
Countless young voice students who have studied voice with me have performed
that song and even though I am far too old to portray the young Ariel, I love to
sing it anytime I can. As a mermaid, she longs to become a human, to walk on
streets and dance in her lovers arms. But Ariel’s father is the King of the Sea and
keeps a tight rein on her. Ariel is willing to give up all she has to make her dream
of becoming human come true and almost loses everything. Of course being Dis-
ney…well, happy endings do come true.
As Christians we are often told to be thankful for the life God has given us. Be
grateful in all things! We are often told to count our blessings and be satisfied
with what we have. But that does not mean that we can’t change our lives.
Change ourselves. Become better than we are. With God’s help we can break off
chains that bind us, we have the strength we need to reach the goals we have for
ourselves and our lives. Stumbling blocks can become hurdles that we jump over
to attain the finish line of our dreams.
God is with us always. He places us in situations that might not be where we want
to be and yes we need to be thankful, but He also gives us tools that we can use to
break out of one life and start a new and more productive new life!
This past weekend our 11th graders here at St. Joseph Church would have received
the Sacrament of Confirmation. They would have sealed their journey in the
Catholic Faith and would have been blessed with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit; wis-
dom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence and the fear
of the Lord. These are the tools we need to change our lives, to change our fami-
lies, our own selves and maybe….the World. Sherry Knott

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL
COMMUNION
when one cannot receive
the Holy Eucharist:
My Jesus,
I believe that You
are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already
there and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from
You.
Amen.

"For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be God’s will, than for doing evil.” (1 Peter 3:17) The old line says “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Many of us are diligent in our planning and making sure things are progressing smoothly. Then disaster strikes, we don’t get the result that was in-tended or an unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond negatively and ask, “Why me? I did eve-rything right!” Here’s the thing – adversity humbles us and reminds us of our dependence on God and not on our own self-reliance. Rest assured, God has a better plan in store for you.

THE CORPORAL & SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY
DURING THIS TIME OF COVID-19
The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the
Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians
and spiritual writers throughout history; just as Jesus at-
tended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to,
these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to “help our
neighbor in their spiritual needs”
(U.S. Catholic Catechism for Adults).
COUNSELING THE DOUBTFUL• Reassure and support those who may be especially anxious during this time. • If someone asks you for advice, orient your response to Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
INSTRUCTING THE IGNORANT• With public celebration of Masses unavailable, learn and/or teach someone else how to make a Spiritual Communion. • Take this time to recommit to your own study and formation and, for those home with children, take advantage of this time to reflect on the faith as a family.
ADMONISHING THE SINNER• Being confined in close quarters for long periods of time with families or house-mates can test us in more ways than one, so be suppor-tive in helping others find their way and correct their mistakes.• Recognize the reality of spiritual warfare in daily interactions and strive to cultivate the correspond-ing virtues needed to resist your personal temptations.
COMFORTING THE SORROWFUL• Write a letter or send a card to someone who is suffering and let them know you are thinking of them.• Remember that a few moments of your day may make a lifetime of difference to some-one who is going through a difficult time. • Con-sider sharing links to spiritual resources with those who may be isolated, such as live streamed Masses, so that they can participate in community worship from home.
Catholic Order of Forester News Our Feeding God’s Children Event for spring 2020 will be “CHALK UP the St. Joseph’s Church grounds”! Or another special place if you do not live in Red Lake Falls (first get permission!).
Help us emphasize the message of God’s love for us, with surrounding the church and property sidewalks with hearts. Families will gather separately anytime be-tween May 9-May 14. Stay as long as you like and chalk up a sidewalk square or more, remembering so-cial distancing if others are present. Father Bob asked to have the sidewalks chalked with hearts in a letter home and I am sure if you do other designs it will be fine, just include a heart too! (Some cool ideas on Pin-terest.)
T-shirts and chalk will be provided, please make arrangements with me, Tammy Conn 218-689-6480. I can drop off the t-shirts and chalk, or you can stop by and pick it up, call or text and we will figure out a way with no contact, plus I can prep your shirt sizes-first come, first serve.
One more ask, please consider donating non-perishable food items to the Red Lake Falls Food shelf sometime during that week as well. I can take the food items when you pick up or when I drop off the t shirts/chalk. This is a different year with Covid 19 present but we still want to do projects, now more than ever we need to “make a difference”. Please take a photo (selfie) of your family working on your artwork and text it to Tammy Conn 218-689-6480, I will make a collage and send it to the National magazine. Thank you!
