It’s Summer time!
We kicked off the summer with a great opening for the Celebration of Color. Tom Lynch was the juror, having just wrapped up a 4 day workshop. He was so impressed with the entries that he selected 2 additional Judge’s Choice awards and donated the prizes! We were then treated to a demo where he emphasized his design ideas by “fixing” paintings brought in by members. What a wonderful way to understand his concepts and see the art “change” before our eyes. And while the demo was impressive, it was great to see all the members attend - there were over 50 people enjoying lunch and the show!
While we move into the summer months, we have 2 open exhibitions, our National Show entries are due, and then we wrap up with our 2017 fundraising month in September.
So enjoy the summer and paint - we are looking forward to seeing what you create!
First and foremost, I would like the thank the Schneider Electric Foundation for their extremely generous grant of $15,000. This grant is essential to the growth of the RIWS and we are so thankful for their continued support. RIWS will use the funds towards our operational costs so that we may continue to provide our classes, exhibitions and workshops to the Pawtucket community and beyond. We’re thrilled to share this news with our members. We are also quite ecxited to have added the “Anything Goes” Open Juried Show to the schedule. The submission deadline for this show is soon, 6/23/17, so be sure not to miss it. Submissions for this show will be entirely online using CaFE.org. You can find the link to submit on our homepage. With so much of the world heading towards online submission, bear with us as we work out any kinks in this process. We expect this to be a pretty smooth transition, but there are always unforeseen issues. With that said, if you are feeling nervous about submitting online and want to bring in your works to the gallery, we will walk you through the entire process at no extra charge. Our ultimate goal is make this process easier, so we encourage you to reach out to us with any comments, concerns, or questions you might have. Thank you all and I look forward to your submissions!

Beginner and advanced painters alike are often overwhelmed by “where to start” in a painting. Many feel they need to paint everything they see, which is a daunting task. One of the most important aspects of painting is learning how to simplify - from the start.
If you feel that you are concentrating too much on small details at the expense of a bolder, more dramatic outcome, this step-by-step workshop will help you to learn what to paint and more importantly, what to leave out. In this workshop you will learn how to loosen up and apply your paint in a gestural, painterly manner.
