CLASSICAL PERIOD
ROME
TIME PERIOD OF INITIATION:-
� The Rome Empire began in 27 BC-180BC
CHARACTERISTICS:- � Arches, domes, vaults are used in design
construction.
� Public buildings are intended to perform a
public function.
� Improvement in concrete and bricks to
facilitated the building of aqueducts.
� Development in housing and public hygiene is
impressive such as public and private baths
and latrines.
� Great pillars are used instead of dense lines of columns suspending flat architraves.
� Many lighthouses were built around the Mediterranean and around the shores.
� Concrete mixture is made up of lime mortar, sand with stone rubble, pozzoiana, water,
and stones.
� Surface could be smooth and faced with attractive stucco or thin panels of marble or
other colored stones.
� Mural in decorative floors, walls and grottoes in geometric and pictorial designs.
� Roman people were particularly interested in portraiture: in making statues that really
looked like one particular person.

TIME PERIOD OF INITIATION:-
� In Asia Minor and Italy for a period from about 700BCE until the 1st
century CE
CHARACTERISTICS:-
� They believed in God known for their temples
and known as Hellenic people.
� They distinguished from its highly formalized
characteristics both of structure and
decoration.
� Their architectural style divided into three
defined categories: - Doric order, Ionic order,
and Corinthian order.
� Doric style was more formal and austere,
Ionic style was more relaxed and decorative
and Corinthian style was later developed .6
� Greek followed balance and proportion in
their design.
� Acanthus leaves is used in their design.
� Stone wall is used instead of mud brick and wood wall.
� Due to the hot climate gleaming marble is used to reflect the sun rays.
� Motifs like pottery painted with floral and marine is used in the design.
� Different types of form are also used like tholos or circular temple.
� The social center for male citizen is gymnasium.
� Pillars are used in their design.
� Fired tiles were used instead of thatched roofs.
� Classical is characterized by beautiful simplicity and graceful balance. Iron in its marble
makes it gleam in the sun

TIME PERIOD OF INITIATION:-
� Around 10th
century.
CHARACTERISTICS:- � Chinese architecture is based on the principal of symmetry , balance and proportion
� Interior space reflects social and ethical value of Chinese.
� Chinese architecture famous for Pagoda and Stupa
design.
� Temple architecture forms of stories tower, an upturned
bowl.
� Structure was basically made up of wood in second and
third century.
� Tower i.e. tang dynasty tower were shaped into octagon
and diagonal.
� Houses are made up of wood and had tiles which were
painted with paint and gloss.
� They believed in Buddhist so the temple roofs were
curved because Buddhist believed in evil spirits.
� Glazed ceramic tiles were used in temple roofs.
� Temple roofs are made up of overhanging cave which is
different from a graceful upward slope.
� In South direction they built their temples and houses.
� There are avenues for loins, mythical animals, camels, elephants, horses, officials and
guardians.
� On roofs sculpture made up of dragons and lions is placed.

TIME PERIOD OF INITIATION:- � Around 500 BC
CHARACTERISTICS:- � Houses were made up of mud.
� Material which they used is
sun baked, mud bricks and
stone.
� Their architecture is basically
based on religious monuments,
sloping walls with few
openings area there.
� Construction is done on post and lintel.
� Exterior and interior walls and pillars were covered with hieroglyphics and pictorial
frescoes and painted in vibrant colors.
� Due to heavy construction IN KARNAK –small temples will construct.
� TUTANKGHAMUN or RAMESSES – are two rulers which made PYLON
� Temples began with 24 meter in high
� The main entrance was flanked by six colossal statues of Ramesses- four seated and two
standing.

century
CHARACTERISTICS:- � Used ribbed vaults, pointed arches in the design
� Stained glass is highly used.
� Intricately decorated chapels.
� Intricate wavy patterns engraved on the stone work
resembled flames.

� Introduction to France towards the end of the 15th
century when King Charles VII of
France began into northern Italy.
CHARACTERISTICS:- � Early renaissance – Round arches, Domes tunnel, Vaults
blended with flamboyant.
� This period is divided into two historical periods – early
renaissance and mannerism.
� Mannerism design and decorated his chateaux at fountain
beaux.

� North of Italy and further in France over the next few decades.

TIME PERIOD OF INITIATION:- � From 1620-1700.
CHARACTERISTICS:- � Colored marbles and glass is used in the design.
� Wall become curved, pediments were broken columns
and pillars tested.
� The entrance of the house was most important features
of the exterior.
� Large window opening were supported by mullions and
transoms.
� Oak wood was extensively used.
� The motifs used during this period were scrolling.

� The porch was framed by decorative columns, brackets or
applied ornament.
� Curved glass is unique found in round bays and towers.
