Antioxidants & Detoxification:What We’ll Discuss

What is a Toxin?

Toxins are harmful substances that can build up in our bodies over time through: The air we breathe The foods we eat The stress we put our

bodies under on a daily basis

Your Health Goal

Keep toxins from disrupting normal functions of the body

Detoxification

Detoxification is the process of removing harmful substances from the body

We live in a world filled with an abundance of toxic chemicals.

Unfortunately, the over abundance of toxins builds up in our bodies causing undue stress.

In some instances the liver, gallbladder, kidneys and digestive system can’t keep up with the demand placed on them.

Toxic Overload

Toxic Overload

Over a period of time, if toxins are not removed, it may adversely affect your health.

A build up of toxins without sufficient detoxification support may lead to an increased toxic burden.

Environmental exposure : Chemicals, smoking, pollution

Dietary factors:Sugar, alcohol, processed foods

Lifestyle factors:Lack of sleep, lack of physical activity, excess weight

High-stress lifestyle:Increased demand on recovery

However, a healthy digestive tract, gallbladder and kidneys are essential for

your liver to complete its goal for effective detoxification

Your Liver Is the #1 Detoxification Organ In Your Body

Page 11: Antioxidants & Detoxification › images › health... · Pesticides Chemicals Tobacco Products Pollution Internal Toxins Bodily Waste Digestive Process Energy Production Hormone

Your Liver and Toxins

The liver's primary function is to sort out and eliminate toxins from the body

Toxins are removed from the body in a complex process:

Part 1: Neutralize and make toxins easier to excretePart 2: Excretion (removal from the body)

Page 12: Antioxidants & Detoxification › images › health... · Pesticides Chemicals Tobacco Products Pollution Internal Toxins Bodily Waste Digestive Process Energy Production Hormone

The GI Tract is not just a piece of plumbing. It is an active organ involved in:

Immunity An active barrier between you and the outside world; a combination of immune tissue and healthy micro-flora (bacteria)

ExcretionThe intestine finishes the process of digestion and absorption of nutrients and passes unwanted material through for elimination

Gastro-Intestinal Function

Page 13: Antioxidants & Detoxification › images › health... · Pesticides Chemicals Tobacco Products Pollution Internal Toxins Bodily Waste Digestive Process Energy Production Hormone

The liver detoxification process can be enhanced or undermined depending of what we eat.

More than the vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables, the phytochemical compounds that they contain are highly beneficial.

Some phytochemicals can support the detoxification process by promoting the normal production of liver detoxifying enzymes and by inhibiting free radicals.

How Antioxidants Fit In

Page 14: Antioxidants & Detoxification › images › health... · Pesticides Chemicals Tobacco Products Pollution Internal Toxins Bodily Waste Digestive Process Energy Production Hormone

There are two classification of antioxidants: • Those produced by the body (i.e. glutathione) • Nutritional antioxidants provided by the diet

Both types work together, but antioxidants created by the body are dependent on certain nutrients in the diet.

A poor diet can result in a reduction of the natural antioxidants your body produces.

Did you know that antioxidants support one another?

Antioxidants recycle other antioxidants!

Vitamin C Vitamin E

Selenium

• Vitamin C recycles vitamin E• Vitamin C is recycled by glutathione• Glutathione needs selenium in order to be

produced by the liver• Anthocyanidines recycle glutathione• And the process continues.

How Antioxidants Fit In

• Similar to a chain reaction, antioxidants metabolize, producing a compound that triggers detoxification.

• We can boost our antioxidant levels to help our bodies detoxify and maintain overall health.

Curcumin, from the South Asian spice tumeric, is not only a highly effective antioxidant, but also it has been shown to protect against mercury buildup in the body.

According to recent scientific studies, rats exposed to mercury and then pre and post-treated with curcumin displacyed decreased mercury concentration in tissues than the rats not treated with curcumin.

Rats not given curcumin demonstrated effects of increased mercury exposure.

This study indicates curcumin’s potential as An antioxidant A protectant against mercury exposure

Do We Get Enough Antioxidants?

Dietary deficiencies – more processed foods in typical Western diets, less nutrient value

Less nutritious foods – farming practices, soil depleted of nutrients over time

Evidence suggests that the amount of some minerals in certain vegetables has declined by 5% to 40%. *

How Can Curcumin Extreme Help?

Contains ‘the golden herb' turmeric curcumin in the form of Meriva, which is known to have superior bioavailability and absorption

Is an antioxidant Additional benefits include: Helps relieve joint inflammation and associated

symptoms such as joint pain when used in conjunction with conventional treatment

Helps to promote joint comfort when used in conjunction with conventional treatment

A factor in the maintenance of good health

Turmeric Extract (Meriva), a complexation of turmeric and soy phospholipids allowing for improved absorption and bioavailability of curcumin. Research showed up to a 20-fold improvement in bioavailablity of

curcumin versus standard extracts. Studies have shown that curcumin has antioxidant, anti-

inflammatory, immune-stimulating, and neuroprotective properties. Preliminary research in people with arthritis found curcumin to be helpful in reducing inflammation and symptoms such as pain and stiffness.

Selenium, a required cofactor for selenoproteins such as glutathione.

Oxygen Extreme Ingredients

Vitamin A (Beta-Carotene) helps to maintain eyesight, skin, membranes and immune function. Vitamin A is also used to help in the development and maintenance of night vision.

Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid is one of the more powerful and well-known antioxidants for the maintenance of good health. Vitamin C helps in connective tissue formation and helps in wound healing. It also helps the body to metabolize fats and proteins.

Selenium, a trace element found in soil, is required in small amounts for the maintenance of overall good health.

Bilberry, with its powerful antioxidant qualities, contains flavonoids called anthocyanosides, which are found largely in dark-skinned fruits, and act as potent antioxidants in the body, maintaining a state of good health.

Oxygen Extreme Ingredients

Green Tea Extract is a health-promoting antioxidant rich in polyphenols that have been shown to promote health. Green tea has been known to help boost the immune system and fight off harmful free radicals while also promoting an overall better state of health.

Ginkgo Biloba helps to support memory, brain function, mood, cerebral and peripheral circulation, and oxygenation and blood flow.

Milk Thistle is used to promote liver health. It contains some of the most potent liver-supporting substances known. Milk thistle has also been shown to protect against free radicals by acting as an antioxidant, protecting the liver and supporting the normal production of new liver cells.
