The Microbial-Induced Corrosion (MIC) process

Anaerobic bacteria present in sewage or wastewater break down sulfate, resulting in the generation of hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S). Thiobacillus family of aerobic bacteria growing in the moist environment above the flow line subsequently convert the hydrogen sulfide gas into sulfuric acid, which attacks the concrete surface and results in deterioration.

Protect concrete from microbial-induced corrosion

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world, because it is durable and its constituent materials are readily available worldwide. However, in applications where concrete is exposed to sewage or wastewater, activity by micro-organisms can lead to biodeterioration of concrete through a process known as microbial-induced corrosion (MIC). Consequently, unless protective measures are taken, MIC will cause premature deterioration in concrete pipes, manholes and other structures that carry sewage or wastewater, resulting in increased maintenance and life-cycle costs.

MasterLife AMA 100 is an antimicrobial admixture from BASF that is added into the concrete mixture during batching and, thus, becomes an integral part of the concrete. MasterLife AMA 100 admixture molecularly bonds to cement hydration products and ruptures the cell membrane of aerobic bacteria on contact through an electro-physical mechanism. The absence of aerobic bacteria prevents the conversion of hydrogen sulfide gas into sulfuric acid, thereby disrupting the microbial-induced corrosion process. As a result, premature deterioration of the concrete is averted. The protection provided by MasterLife AMA 100 admixture stays effective even if the concrete surface is abraded.

Protecting concrete surfaces

MasterLife AMA 100 admixture stops the growth and colonization of the microorganisms on concrete surfaces providing protection from biodeterioration. This results in optimal aesthetic appearance, as demonstrated in the treated concrete sample shown on the right.

Preventing biodeterioration

Micro-organisms

Concrete Surface

1

Antimicrobial Admixture (AMA) integrates permanently into the concrete structure. Microorganisms that come into contact with the concrete surface are destroyed.

2

The AMA prohibits futher growth of microorganisms. The result: A clean concrete surface free of the growth of mold, algae, fungus, viral and bacterial organisms.

How MasterLife AMA 100 antimicrobial admixture works

MasterLife AMA 100 admixture chemistry has been proven to mitigate microbial-induced corrosion

Benefits

Protects concrete from microbial-induced corrosion Bacteria immunity cannot be developed from repeated contact with concrete containing MasterLife AMA 100 admixture Protection stays effective even if the concrete surface is abraded

Applications

Cast-in-place concrete used in sewage and drainage systems Precast concrete tanks, pipes, manholes, and similar structures/elements used in sewage and drainage systems Shotcrete (for pipelines and tunnels) Rehabilitation of deteriorated concrete elements in sewage and drainage systems

Features

Electro-physical destruction mechanism Integral part of concrete matrix Broad-spectrum protection Ruptures bacteria cell membrane on contact and prevents colonization and growth of acid-producing bacteria on concrete surfaces Protects against several microorganisms, including, gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria, fungi, algae, yeast, and mildew
