    Welcome to the beach

The picture on the ront cover was no

accident; it really is a combination o di-

erent images that I think about when I

think o massage education. Right there

on the sand, is where I put my students.

Every decision I make I think to mysel

how is this decision going to get my

students out there on that sandy beach.

I just returned rom the ABMP coner-

ence or massage educators, this con-

    erence surprisingly gave me enough

material to ll about a thousand news-

letters, and I am sure you will get sick o

me reerencing it. The reason why we

went was to answer the question are we

really alone? The answer is complicatedbut it is yes, unortunately we are alone.

I was surprised to meet a lot o very nice

school administrators and they had a

lot o very good excuses why they have

    shortened their programs and oering

less to their students, but at the end

o the day, all I can think o is: did their

student get to the sandy beach?

The best thing about meeting up with

your colleagues is that you have a

sympathetic ear to the diculties o

your proession. It is nice to see so many

people who were as stressed out as I

was, and it interesting to hear that we all

had the same challenges. The dierence

was how they reacted to the challenges.

    For example, i one o

    their students misses

    a class, they would

    deter that student by

    charging a ee. I a

    student was ailing a

    class, they would nd

    the student some

    tutoring and charge

    a ee. I the student

needed to retake a test, they would be

charged a ee. I understand where

decisions like this come rom, I have 5

    accountants that prepare dierent parts

o the books, and believe I should be

charging the students a multitude o

ees to make nancial gains, but, thats

not what this proession is about and

    undermines my values.

The worst part o my trip was undergo-

ing a two hour lecture about online

education. Everyone else loved this lec-

ture and was really sold on being able to

make money o o students rom other

states and were not using their acilities

and parking. The entire lecture ocused

on all the problems o trying to make an

online class equal to a real lie campus

    class. There were tremendous problems

    with technology, cheating, and cost.

To me the answer was pretty obvious

that online education was a terrible

idea, especially or massage or all

the apparent reasons that are going

through your head right now. To make

the argument even more dramatic, it is

    illegal in most states, non

    transerable to anyone

    and not recognized by

    most employers. The

    person (salesman) giving

the talk then said to the

    audience that they were

    going to be let behind,

that it was the way o the

uture and they were going to miss out

on a lot o money. He might as well said

    and you wont be cool.

Everyone was sold on the idea ater he

said that, and gladly gave into peer pres-

sure, except the supposedly not so cool

guy writing this article. I sat back in my

chair thinking about my student on the

beach saying I got my degree online.

I love technology, I am so grateul or

this computer to write this rant on, how-

ever I dont want to massage it.

I am pleased to join the sta hereat the Academy and I look orward

to getting to know each o the stu-dents, aculty and sta even better

than I already have. Based on theshort time I have experienced, I ap-preciate the tight-knit group o indi-

viduals the Academy employs andenrolls. This environment is one

that I enjoy coming to work or each

day, especially the assignment I spe-cialize in; to ensure student enroll-ment by assisting with an aordabletuition. Having a college education

is undamental to a successul u-ture, along with hard work, dedica-

tion and passion or excellence. Buto course, we must all pay or that

achievement. Financial Aid is agreat resource to utilize toward thisaccomplishment. Mysel, and the

rest o the sta are here to assist in

making this endeavor to be a Regis-tered Massage Therapist a certainty. I

am currently working on outsourcingseveral lending institutions that may

provide urther nancial aid, in theorm o grants, scholarships and loansor current and prospective students.

    By researching what other orms oaid may be accessible to students;

this will potentially eliminate the gapo tuition costs. Thus, the students

may ully enjoy their time here at theAcademy and ocus on their studiesas opposed to their payments while

enrolled. Please see me anytime, as Ihave an open door policy, regarding

    nancial aid questions, payments,
