ANOTHER NEW HOME FORGORESBRIDGE BREEZE UP
By DaithR Harvey For the third time in as many years, Friday's GoresbridgeBreeze Up will have a different home. Originally developed andhosted by Martin Donohoe's Kilkenny-based auction house, thesale merged with Tattersalls Ireland last year with proceedingstransferring successfully to County Meath. Another switch, thisone not of the strategic kind rather more out of necessity, seesthe action move across the water to Tattersalls in Newmarket asthe sale, originally slated for two months previously, bids tomake up for lost time. Between additional wildcards andwithdrawals around 150 horses breezed in Newmarket adjacentto the Rowley Mile Racecourse on Wednesday and while therewas reportedly a smallish crowd in attendance it is hoped therewill be enough interested parties on hand on Friday to allow forsome decent trade to take place. Surprisingly enough trade at the earlier rescheduled Europeanbreeze-up sales held up remarkably well given eventsthroughout the world and while it is fanciful to expect Friday=sturnover to match last year's figure of i5,010,500, TattersallsIreland's Marketing Director Simon Kerins is hopeful anotherimportant metric, the clearance rate, will keep tabs on bothprevious editions and other breeze-up sales held this year. "All things considered we are reasonably hopeful the sale willgo well,@ he said. AThe Tattersalls team here in Newmarket havebeen brilliant, they put together a new stabling plan and theyhave been hugely helpful in accommodating the sale at veryshort notice.@ Cont. p2
ENABLE FACES BALLYDOYLE TRIO It will be a case of Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) versus
Ballydoyle and Galileo (Ire) in Saturday=s G1 King George VI and
Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. at Ascot, but she=s been there before
and connections are confident that the star mare is back in the
right spot after her defeat in the July 5 G1 Eclipse S. at Sandown.
John Gosden is expecting that comeback effort to have put her
right for her historic bid for a third renewal of this prestige
affair.
AI was very open with everybody that, being the age she is
now, she=s found it difficult getting to race-fitness, more than
ever before,@ he explained. ASo she=s found that challenging, but
has a strong mind and has brought herself forward with the race
to bring her on. She=s got older and wiser as she=s gone, but I
feel she=s back in the zone now. I=m of the viewpoint that a Flat
horse reaches its zenith aged five, so I still see her training
beautifully for this. I just went with her ahead of the Eclipse and
her work on the Limekilns has been perfect since. I=ve let her
lead a couple of works too and she=s enjoyed that for a change.@
With two Derby winners in Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) and
Sovereign (Ire) backing up the G1 Juddmonte International and
G1 Grand Prix de Paris winner Japan (GB) in the three-pronged
Galileo attack, Gosden is aware that tactics could play a part but
is happy to let Dettori take control of that aspect. Cont. p4

Goresbridge graduate and recent winner Parent=s Prayer | Racing Post
Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale Cont. from p1
He added, AI think the transfer has gone relatively smoothly,
obviously there have been challenges, especially for vendors
who were working under the expectation that the breeze would
be in Fairyhouse with the sale across the road from that in
Tattersalls Ireland. That plan was changed at short notice but
the breeze seemed to go well on Wednesday and given the
amazingly resilient nature of this industry and the fact that trade
has held up well at other breeze ups we are hopeful of a good
solid sale."
Last year's top lot was a son of Lope De Vega (Ire) that Norman
Williamson's Oak Tree Farm sold to Blandford Bloodstock for
i175,000 and subsequently
named Haqeeqy (Ire). He has
done well this summer for
trainer John Gosden winning
twice at Yarmouth and
Newmarket. Meanwhile Parent's
Prayer (Ire) (Kingman {GB}),
bought by BBA Ireland for
i165,000 in 2019, got off the
mark at the third time of asking
in a maiden at Ayr for Archie
Watson on July 14.
With so many withdrawals
from the main catalogue it was a
welcome boost for the sale to
recently receive a number of well-bred wildcards to make up for
some of the shortfall on offer and those late comers include an
American Pharoah filly catalogued as lot 254, the last offering of
the day. Offered by Tom Whitehead's Powerstown Stud, the filly
was purchased by her vendor as a yearling at Keeneland last
year for $67,000. The daughter of stakes winner Innocent Love
(Grand Slam) was actually knocked down to Richard Hughes and
Paul Shanahan for ,100,000 at the Goffs UK breeze-up at the
beginning of the month but returns for another shot at it on
Friday.
Another wildcard who didn't find a buyer in Doncaster was
Robson Aguiar's son of Siyouni (Fr) who is offered as lot 251. The
half-brother to two stakes performers was a i66,000 yearling
purchase by Deuce Greathouse at Arqana last year, but was
bought back by Aguiar at Goffs UK for ,100,000.
Also among the wildcards, Willie Browne's Mocklershill offers
a couple of well-bred sorts in lot 227, a No Nay Never
half-brother to the stakes winning filly We Are Ninety (Ire)
(Thewayyouare) and lot 230, a filly by Night Of Thunder (Ire)
that Browne bought at the Goffs February Sale this year for
i30,000.
In the original catalogue an early lot that could make a splash
is lot 28, a filly by Siyouni (Fr)
from Brendan Holland's Grove
Stud. The bay is the first produce
out of the Galileo (Ire) mare
Surprisingly (Ire) who is a
full-sister to G3 Balanchine S.
runner up Butterscotch (Ire) and
a half-sister to the speedy Coach
House (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}).
However, what doesn't appear
in the catalogue, is the fact that
Surprisingly is also a full-sister to
Tiger Moth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}),
who broke his maiden last
month at Leopardstown before
running second to Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) in the G1
Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.
The only remaining juvenile in the sale by leading stallion
Kingman (GB) is lot 48, a colt out of the stakes winning mare
Mary Boleyn (Ire) (King's Best). Although a relatively cheap
yearling purchase at i20,000 by Egmont Stud's Mark Flannery,
the same vendor topped this sale two years ago with a Bated
Breath (GB) colt that went from a 5,000gns yearling to a
i210,000 breezer, so Flannery certainly knows how to prepare
one for this sale. Cont. p3

Egmont also offers a well-bred Gleneagles (Ire) filly (lot 153)
out of a half-sister to Group 1 winners Excelebration (Ire)
(Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and Lancaster Bomber (War Front).
Johnny Collins is another master of his trade and he offers an
interesting 2-year-old as lot 75. The colt is a son of US-based
first-season sire Mshawish (Medaglia d'Oro), who Collins also
pinhooked in Keeneland, before the horse went on to win twice
at Grade I level in America for Al Shaqab Racing. This current
pinhook cost Collins $60,000 at Keeneland last year and is out of
the stakes producing Invincible Spirit (Ire) mare Refreshing (GB)
from the brilliant family of Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy).
Ambrose O'Mullane and Mary Reynolds of Ardglas Stables
have enjoyed some good results at this sale in its former guise
and they offer a nicely bred filly on Friday as lot 139. The
daughter of Footstepsinthesand (GB) is the second produce out
of Miss Brazil (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), whose first foal
Elaire Noire (Ire), a full-brother to this filly, was a stakes winner
in Italy last year and also finished second in the G2 Premio Gran
Criterium.
Among those who that caught the eye when being put through
their paces on Wednesday was lot 87 from Longways Stables, a
colt by Awtaad (Ire) who is a half-brother to four winners
including the speedy Miss Elizabeth (Ire) (Intense Focus). She
was a dual winner and was stakes placed for trainer Eddie
Lynam.
Another reported to have clocked a fast time was lot 155 from
Eddie Ahern Bloodstock. This filly by Zoffany (Ire), the sire of a
recent stakes winning 2-year-old filly in Minaun (Ire), is out of
the 2-year-old winner Limetree Lady (GB) (Selkirk) and whose
pedigree traces back to the mighty Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel
{Ire}).
The sale will commence at 10:30 a.m. and there will be live
internet bidding with potential purchasers required to register
at the following link.

SUSSEX TAKING SHAPE AS CLASSIC COLTS
FACE ELDERS Juddmonte=s undefeated G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas
hero Siskin (First Defence) and G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas Kameko
(Kitten=s Joy), who represents Qatar Racing, lead the nine-strong
G1 Qatar Sussex S. field at the latest entry stage on Thursday
morning.
The duo are joined by fellow sophomores: MG1SP G2 Coventry
S. winner Arizona (Ire) (No Nay Never), Irish 2000 Guineas
runner-up Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and G3 Tattersalls S.
hero and MG1Sp Wichita (Ire) (No Nay Never), all from
Ballydoyle. Aidan O=Brien also sends 4-year-olds MG1SW Circus
Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won the G1 Queen Anne S. at
Royal Ascot and GSW Lancaster House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
Marcus Tregoning fields MGSW Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing
{GB}) who leads the entries with a Racing Post Rating of 123.
San Donato (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire})), runner-up to Mohaather
in the G2 Summer Mile S. at Ascot earlier this month, will also
take part. The lightly raced Roger Varian trainee won a 1200-
metre listed event at Doncaster in the fall of 2018 and emerged
from a 197-day break to complete the trifecta behind MG1SW
Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) in the G1 French 2000 Guineas
in May of 2019. The Summer Mile was his first appearance since
and he appears poised to run well in this return to Group 1
company.
AYes, absolutely,@ said Varian, of San Donato on the idea of
facing Mohaather again. AI think Goodwood will suit San Donato,
and we=re looking forward to it. He=s come out of that Ascot
Summer Mile bouncing, and I would anticipate in a nice bit of
improvement--because that was his first run for 16 or 17
months. He=s an exciting horse for the rest of the year and
beyond, I hope.@
SOTTSASS EARMARKED FOR JUDDMONTE
INTERNATIONAL Classic winner Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) is targeting the G1
International S. at York in August, Racing Post reported on
Thursday. Successful in the 2019 G1 Prix du Jockey Club, the
White Birch Farm runner ran third in the G1 Prix de l=Arc de
Triomphe last fall, and returned with a fourth in the G2 Prix
d=Harcourt at ParisLongchamp on May 11. Stepped back up to
Group 1 level in the Prix Ganay, he secured another top flight
win in June. A late season target for Sottsass is the Arc.
Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget told Racing Post, ASottsass is in
very good form and he will go to York. I think that=s the race he
needs to be running in, he is a Group 1 horse. If he stayed home
at Deauville he would be giving a lot of weight away in a lesser
race [G3 Gontaut-Biron]. After York, if all goes well, he could
take in the G2 Prix Foy and then the Arc.@
Rouget also announced that G1 Prix Saint-Alary victress
Tawkeel (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) will make her next start in the
upcoming G1 Qatar Nassau S. on July 30.
ATawkeel goes to Goodwood and is in good form,@ he added.

GEOFF TURNBULL PASSES AT 74 Geoff Turnbull MBE, who with his wife Sandra raced horses of
the calibre of Group 1 winners Mondialiste (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
and Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper), has passed away after a short
illness, Elwick Stud announced in a statement via Twitter on
Thursday. The proprietor of Elwick Stud in County Durham was
74.
The statement read, AElwick Stud is deeply saddened by the
passing of our much loved CEO Geoff Turnbull MBE after a short
battle with illness. Black armbands will be worn during racing
today as a mark of respect for Mr. Turnbull, who was a great
ambassador for northern racing. We ask that the privacy of the
family is respected at this very difficult time.@
A lifelong horse lover, Turnbull purchased his first racehorse,
the seven-time winner La Sylphide (GB) (Primitive Gift {GB}), in
1998. Later on she became the first broodmare for his fledgling
Elwick Stud operation.
The best runner to carry the Turnbulls= colours was
Wertheimer & Frere-bred Mondialiste. A winner and third in the
2013 G1 Prix Jean Prat, he joined the yard of trainer David
O=Meara after being purchased for €190,000 out of the 2014
Arqana Deauville Summer Mixed Sale. The bay would go on to
win the 2015 GI Ricoh Woodbine Mile S. in Canada and take the
following year=s GI Arlington Million S. Stateside. He was also
runner-up in the 2015 GI Breeders= Cup Mile and is currently
standing his third season at Elwick Stud at a fee of £6,000. His
oldest foals are yearlings.
Also an international campaigner, the gelded Lord Glitters=s
best showing is a win in the 2019 G1 Queen Anne S., while he
was second the year prior and also third in both the 2019 G1
Dubai Turf and 2018 G1 Sussex S. The grey carries an entry to
the G2 York S. on Saturday.
NIJINSKY II AWARDED QIPCO DIAMONDS &
PEARLS AWARD British Triple Crown hero Nijinsky II (Northern Dancer) won
the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. 50 years ago this year,
and was awarded the QIPCO Diamonds & Pearls award, Ascot
Racecourse and QIPCO announced on Thursday. The award
celebrates the winner of a vintage renewal of the King George.
Owned by Charles W. Engelhard, Jr. and trained by Vincent
O=Brien, the bay delivered as the only 3-year-old in the field,
having already claimed victory in the 2000 Guineas, Epsom
Derby and Irish Derby. After his King George triumph, he would
add the St Leger and become the last British Triple Crown
winner to date. At stud, he sired 155 black-type winners,
including G1 Epsom Derby winner Shahrastani and GI Kentucky
Derby hero Ferdinand in the same year, 1986. Cont. p6

was a wonderful horse and was unbeaten at the time. There was
a lot of hype going into the King George--the opposition was
decent, they were good horses, every one of them had a
chance. You had all the best--obviously we thought he would
win. He came to the other horses in the straight so easily, it was
hard to believe really but he won in a canter. It was a wonderful
win and was probably the best performance of his career.@

winless in 13 subsequent starts before annexing Royal Ascot=s
June 17 Royal Hunt Cup H. and went postward for this return to
stakes company coming back off a short-head second in the July
5 Coral Challenge H. at Sandown. Fourth until easing into third at
halfway, he was angled out of a pocket along the rail passing the
furlong marker and quickened smartly under urging in the latter
stages to secure a second black-type success.
AHe=s not the easiest because he goes when he wants to go

Johnston. AIt was difficult for James [Doyle] and he would have

Starspangledbanner | Coolmore Stud
BANNER FLYING AHEAD OF AUSSIE RETURN
By Bren O'Brien
The stud career of Starspangledbanner has hit new heights
with two Irish group successes in four days, combined with a
career-best season from his progeny in Australia.
Fertility issues plagued the early part of the four-time Group 1
winner's stud career, but thanks to the careful management of
both Coolmore and Rosemont Stud, his current home in
Australia, he has been able to shuttle successfully between
hemispheres.
The 13-year-old son of Choisir has recently arrived back in
Australia and is serving out a period of quarantine before taking
up residence again at Rosemont Stud in Victoria for the 2020
season at a fee of $19,800 inc GST.
"He'll arrive at Rosemont in the first week of August and we=re
really looking forward to seeing him again. He's such a popular
stallion here in Victoria and statistically is as good a sire standing
in the state," Rosemont's General Manager, Bloodstock, Ryan
McEvoy, said. "He is tracking in the vicinity of 6.5% stakes
winners to runners and over 11% black type horses to runners
so his ability to get a higher class of horse is unquestionable."
A look at his black type statistics sees Starspangledbanner
striking at 6.3% stakes winners to runners globally, with four of
his 14 career stakes winners saluting in Australia. He heads into
his ninth Australian season with an incredible head of steam,
thanks to three Northern Hemisphere stakes winners in the past
10 days.
The Jessica Harrington-trained Dickiedooda (Ire) kicked things
off on July 13 with a win in the Listed Tipperary S. at Cork before
the Fozzy Stack-prepared Aloha Star (Ire) became his 14th
stakes winner overall with a win in the G2 Airlie Stud S. at The
Curragh on Sunday.
On Wednesday, Starspangledbanner's G1 Cheveley Park S.
winner, Millisle (Ire) returned to the winner's circle for
Harrington in the G3 Ballyogan S. at Naas. It was the 3-year-old
filly's third stakes success, making her just the second of
Starspangledbanner's progeny to secure three or more
black-type wins after Home Of The Brave (Ire), who has six.
"She=s back on track. She was very good there and Shane
[Foley--jockey] said she=s only really learning to sprint now,"
Harrington said of Millisle after the race.
"We=ll probably go to The Curragh now for the Phoenix Sprint,
another Group 3 and then we could go to France for the [G1 Prix
Maurice de Gheest at Deauville]. It=s just hard enough to find
races for her.
"There are very few fillies races, that=s the trouble, and she=s
probably not hardened enough to take on the older sprinters
yet. I think she will be in time, as I think she=s a proper sprinter.
I=d love to look at a Group 1 towards the end of the season. "
In a measure of the faith in the stallion, Harrington confirmed
Millisle's dam, Green Castle (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) had been
sent back to him this year at Coolmore Ireland.
"Her dam went back in foal this year to Starspangledbanner
aged 23. She had been retired, but they brought her back in out
of the field," she said.
Strong Numbers Support Stronger Fertility In a positive indication of his ongoing fertility,
Starspangledbanner served 148 mares at 80% strike rate in
Ireland this season.
"Between Coolmore and Rosemont, we have learned a lot
about how effective he is in the shed, the techniques to manage
him and maximise his fertility. We=ve analysed the data and put
that to good use," McEvoy said. "Certainly, the fertility concern
would appear a thing of the past and breeders should feel
increased confidence in sending their mares to
Starspangledbanner this season. Reproductively speaking, he=s
matured and from a practical management viewpoint we=ve
worked hard to best maximise his fertility going forward."

In terms of his Australian progeny on the track, it's been a
career-best season for Starspangledbanner. He has had 34
winners from 61 runners in 2019/20, with his progeny earning
close to $3 million, a considerable increase on his previous
record of $1.4 million last season. He also sits comfortably in the
top five Australian 2-year-old sires for this season.
His star performer has been the 2-year-old Prime Star, who
won the R. Listed Inglis Millennium at Warwick Farm in February
for Richard and Michael Freedman. The China Horse
Club-owned gelding has recovered from an injury which ended
his 2-year-old preparation and had a recent trial at Randwick,
finishing second.
Promising Signs from Rosemont Fillies Also set to return in the next few weeks is the smart
Rosemont-owned filly Brooklyn Hustle, who thrashed
subsequent The Everest winner Yes Yes Yes on debut and has
been very competitive in stakes company in her subsequent five
starts, including a third in the G3 Blue Sapphire S., last spring.
"She might be the forgotten filly who has been off the scene,
but certainly not from our point of view," McEvoy said. "We
have been waiting to get her back, and you only have to think
about her debut, where she made such an impression in a highly
rated race, of course she skipped past Yes Yes Yes and won that
race so convincingly. Clearly that form reference will be noted
when she does return to the races reminding people of what a
unique talent she is."
Starspangledbanner's next stakes winner could come as soon
as Saturday with the Rosemont-owned Knowles to contest the
Listed Lightning S. at Morphettville.
"She's really well-placed there for Jason Warren. She is a filly
that while she hasn't achieved it yet, we do think she is a stakes
horse. We think she is capable of measuring up in a race like
that for sure," McEvoy said.
Rosemont also have another Starspangledbanner filly, the
Tony Gollan-trained 2-year-old Starosa, which it has high hopes
for after a 6l win at Doomben in May.
McEvoy said the upcoming season, where Starspangledbanner
stands at $19,800 (inc GST), looms as another opportunity for
the stallion to build on his burgeoning record.
"He's been a phenomenal stallion for the team to be involved
in and whilst it may feel like he's been around for a while, he's
still a relatively young stallion. He covered a seriously good book
of mares last season and he is on target for that again this year,"
he said.
"We've recently finalised our matings, and again, he=ll be
backed up with another strong book of mares from the
Rosemont band."

MIKE CLINE TO RETIRE ASLANE=S END FARM MANAGER
Mike Cline, "the only farm manager Lane's End has ever
known," according to a press release from the farm announcing
the news, is retiring after a 40-year career at the storied
nursery. "It would be hard to overstate Mike's importance to
Lane's End and everything that has happened here since the
farm's inception," said Will Farish. "I hired Mike back in 1979
and he has overseen everything from the broodmares, to
stallions, to sales, to barn construction, to pasture
maintenance."
Many successful people in the industry came up under Cline's
tutelage, including Callan Strouss, the farm manager at Lane's
End's Oak Tree division; Chris Baker at Three Chimneys; Eddie
Kane at Calumet; Charles Campbell at Indian Creek Farm;
Cooper Sawyer at Mt. Brilliant; and Donna Vowles at Kiltinan
Castle Stud, among others.
"Will Farish provided me with the opportunity of a lifetime and
it has truly been an honor to work for him and with him over
these many years," said Cline. "Will's vision for Lane's End was
incredible and it has been a privilege to help him implement that
vision. I have had the opportunity to meet presidents, the
Queen and many fascinating people, not to mention manage
some of the greatest Thoroughbreds in history: A.P. Indy, Smart
Strike, Kingmambo, Zenyatta, Miesque, All Along, Weekend
Surprise and so many others."Cont. p3
HANDLE OFF TO STRONG START AT SPA
WITH HELP OF INCREASED TV EXPOSUREby Mike Kane
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - At the very bottom on the left-hand
side of the daily recap sheet you can find the answer to why the
New York Racing Association opted to run at Saratoga this
fan-free summer instead of staying downstate and operating at
Belmont Park: All Sources Handle.
Though they were acutely aware that New York State's
COVID-19 protocols prevented spectators from attending
professional sporting events, NYRA officials projected that
handle on Saratoga racing would be stronger than on 40 days at
Belmont. The early returns are showing they were correct. The
opening day handle was up 21% from the rainy Saratoga opener
in 2019. The first weekend, a total of four days, showed a 9.4%
increase. The trend continued on Wednesday, the first day of
the second week, with a jump of 38%. Cont. p4

Cline cont. from p1 The farm said that a new farm manager will not be hired;
rather, Todd Claunch will continue in his role and take on
additional responsibilities at the farm, while Cline will continue
to consult.
"I plan on continuing to stay involved with the farm and its
many clients in more of an advisory role," said Cline. "Lane's
End's continued success will always be important to me."
Chris McGrath profiled Cline for the TDN in 2018, and Cline
talked about the many opportunities and experiences his role at
Lane's End had provided him, such as the time he flew on Air
Force One to deliver a puppy to President George Bush. "For
some bumpkin like me, to do that kind of stuff? Working for the
Farish family has been an unbelievable experience," Cline told
McGrath. "I just think how lucky I was to run into this one guy
who's enabled me to do this for all this time. I don't think either
of us had an idea where it was going to go, back then. But I just
felt I was around the right sort of person. And he and his family
have been basically responsible for everything good that's ever
happened to me."
Cline arrived at Lane's End in 1979, when it was a 140-acre
cattle farm. "There was a beautiful old house, beautiful rolling
land," Cline recalled in 2018. "[Mr. Farish] lived in Houston, he
came to Kentucky all the time but never really had a home here.
And that was the cool part about it; so many people have farms
that aren't really homes--but this place started out as a home.
So we fixed up the house, and immediately started working on
plans to build the broodmare barns." Cline was in his 20s at the
time.
Cline attended the University of Kentucky on a football
scholarship, and got a job for trainer Mack Miller when he left
school. "Mack was a hay, oats and water guy, so the formative
years I had in the horse business were with someone who was
straight, honest and loved his horses," Cline told McGrath in
2018. He went on to work on the starting gate at NYRA, and
then as assistant to Bob Dunham. It was through a subsequent
job managing the old Big Sink Farm when he met Farish.
His gratitude for the opportunity has always been palpable, as
McGrath discovered when he sat down with him two years ago.
"There's lots of ways to get judged and I'm happy with being
judged the way I will be," he said at the time. "I just really am
grateful for the opportunity I got. There aren't many of those
kinds of jobs any more. For me to stay as long as I have is pretty
unheard of, in this day and age. Especially when you're doing
something that's your passion. I love what I do. Mostly because
where I get to do it, and who I get to do it with."

Horses race past an empty grandstand and apron on
opening day at Saratoga | Chelsea Durand
Saratoga Handle cont. from p1 Tony Allevato, the Chief Revenue Officer & President of NYRA
Bets, said officials spent a lot of time considering whether it
made sense to add the expense of opening Saratoga Race
Course for the 152nd season of Thoroughbred racing in the city.
"From a management standpoint we got together with the
horsemen and talked about it, looking at the Saratoga brand and
what it means to racing. It's the best in Thoroughbred racing,"
he said. "When you think of Saratoga, you think of premier
horse racing. I think it was
important to maintain that
season and have the racing
come up here, knowing that it
would be reflective in the
numbers, in our opinion. The
same race at Belmont would
generate more handle and more
money back to the industry if
that race was run at Saratoga
versus Belmont."
Allevato said confidence in the
power of Saratoga was borne
out by the handle numbers
during the first year of an
exclusive television deal with
Fox Sports and the MSG networks. Saratoga's opening four days
had a combined handle of $80.3 million, nearly double the final
four days of the Belmont meet, which generated a combined
handle of $41.4 million.
"I would not say we were surprised," Allevato said. "We were
reassured that we were doing the right thing, is the way to put
it."
However, noting that the stats have been solid, Allevato said it
is too early to celebrate.
"We are living in a time where you can plan a lot, but things
seem to change every two weeks," he said. "You are always
trying to be cautious and this move up here, just like the move
that we made on the television side, there is always some risk
involved with what we're doing."
Allevato, a California native, brought a deep resume of
experience in racing and television sports with him to NYRA in
2016. Since his arrival, he has overseen the development and
growth of the company's advance deposit wagering platform,
NYRA Bets, and its television programming. In 2016, the
inaugural season of Saratoga Live had 80 hours of national
broadcast time on the Fox Sports Network's FS2 channel. Last
year, the total grew to 190 hours. This year, the partnership
expanded again, as NYRA left the long-established racing
channel TVG for the commitment to Fox and MSG and 700
hours of live national TV exposure. The package includes
America's Day at the Races, as well as NYRA and Churchill
Downs racing. Fox's main sports channel, FS1 will carry 32 hours
of Saratoga Live and the G1
Runhappy Travers will be shown
live in a 90-minute program on
Fox on Aug. 8.
Allevato worked for TVG for
14 years earlier in his career and
said he had a strong relationship
with the channel
"Any time that you are going
to move away from a significant
partner like that there is always
going to be some kind of risk,"
he said. "For us, the reason that
we went exclusive this year with
Fox, it was about being able to
showcase New York Racing and
our content and our horses and our horsemen on a national
scale. It really came down to numbers in terms of programming.
If you look at our shows we show two races an hour from New
York. If Churchill is running we'll show four races an hour, which
is a race every 15 minutes.
"When we are on TVG we're sharing the spotlight with
sometimes five other race tracks. For us, it was important to try
and get as much time around our signal. We are the New York
Racing Association. We are very biased, but we think our racing
is the best racing in the country. And we feel that it deserves 60
minutes of every hour in terms of coverage and that's what we
have been able to provide by being on Fox.
Moreover, Allevato said that the Fox deal has the potential to
expand racing's audience.
"By being on a mainstream sports network we are giving the
sport an opportunity to reach out to new fans, something that
horse racing has been preaching for decades and decades that
needed to be done," he said. "NYRA has now taken that step.

Allevato cont.
"We will be coming out of all different types of sporting
events, whether it's soccer games, baseball, NASCAR, you name
it, we are capturing eyeballs that aren't traditionally watching
horse racing. With sports betting now growing across the
country it's a critical time for horse racing to get that crossover
fan. We feel like the shows give us the best opportunity to
expose those people to what we feel is the best racing in the
country. With all the technology we have all the cameras, we
are showing them a product that looks like a major league
sporting event. We don't see any scenario where that is bad for
horse racing."
Still, Allevato said there were questions about whether it was
the right move to leave TVG, the go-to racing channel in the U.S.
"There was some criticism when we made the decision by a
small number of people that there would be an inconvenience
for viewers who would have to find the network," he said.
"Sometimes we are on multiple Fox networks. One day we might
be on for two hours on FS2 and then the rest of the day on FS1.
For me, as a person who watches sports television, if I want to
watch an event I find it. I think the inconvenience, if it exists, is a
30-second inconvenience in terms of locating where it's at."
At the same time, every NYRA race is available every day in HD
on NYRA's YouTube channel, which is also shown on the TDN
homepage.
"There are multiple ways for people to see the show," Allevato
said. "We are exposing horse racing to more eyeballs than ever.
It's pretty significant. While there were some complaints, we
had a pretty long list of all the positives that came out of us
being on Fox. One thing that was missing is that people who
were criticizing us were working under the false assumption that
Fox would still be giving us all these hours if we were
non-exclusive. That was not the case."
Allevato said that NYRA was building it television department
before he arrived and that it has committed to investing in TV
and its ADW platform.
"Technology is always going to come. If you try to avoid it, it's
going to run you over," he said. "From a horse racing
standpoint, we have embraced technology. It started 20 years
ago with the advent of advanced deposit wagering. At the time,
people looked at it as a way to keep people away from the
races. Now, fast forward 20 years later, imagine where horse
racing would be today during in this pandemic if there was no
advanced deposit wagering. Literally, the sport would be dead.
Horse racing has put themselves in a position where they can at
least continue and operate during these difficult times."
The increasing television exposure has helped the NYRA Bets
business. Allevato said that new accounts are up 150% over last
year. With that fact in mind, the NYRA programming approach is
aimed at embracing new and seasoned fans. Cont. p6

NYRA cont.
"It's a very intimidating sport for people who are just tuning in
for the first time," he said. "That's what we really pride
ourselves on trying to do that and make it as accessible for the
average person. We do a lot of free-to-play things for people
who watch the shows. We do a lot of offers for new customers
that are low introductory offers to get them engaged. And we
really try to make it as user-friendly as possible.
"It's interesting with all the sign-ups and all the additional
people that are betting the average amount being bet per
customer is down, year over year, which is a really positive
thing, if that makes sense. So we have more people betting but
they don't bet as much per person. That's because we've got
that more casual fan that is playing now."
Once NYRA was given permission to re-open at Belmont in
early June, Allevato and the other executives came to the
conclusion that Saratoga, even without fans in the stands, was
better for business than continuing on at Belmont Park.
"Looking at the numbers that we've seen so far, that would
seem to solidify our beliefs," he said. "There is also the TV
element of this, as well. The entire industry has now become
television and internet viewing. There is something about
Saratoga from a historic standpoint--not taking anything away
from Belmont Park--but there is that certain appeal that it has
crosses over to that mainstream sports fan. That was the
opinion we had going in. Nothing we have seen so far, granted
we are one week into the meet, would suggest that we were
incorrect in that thinking."

MOMOS HAS IRONHORSE THINKING BIG--
AND THAT=S NO JOKE by Alan Carasso
In Greek mythology, Momos is Athe personification of satire
and mockery.@
In horse racing, Momos is a very talented and very fast son of
Distorted Humor and Inspeight of Us (Speightstown) who
delivered the first >wow= performance in the first 2-year-old
maiden of the Saratoga meet July 18 (video), earning >TDN
Rising Star= status.
AI think everybody that buys a horse that wants to win that
first maiden special at Saratoga realizes that you=re going to be
running against some of the best horses that have been
specifically targeted for those races,@ said Harlan Malter, the
managing partner of Ironhorse Racing Stable, which owns
Momos in partnership with Tami Bobo=s Secure Investments.
ANo matter how good your horse is training, it=s difficult to
expect to win,@ he continued. AThe reports I got were that the
horse is healthy and training great and, something you always
like to hear-->This is a fast horse.= We were concerned about a
possible speed duel or running into a monster, but I was
cautiously optimistic. We felt like he was going to run well, but I
don=t think anyone goes into those races thinking that you=re
going to win. But we were thrilled with the way he did it.@
Turns out Momos was the monster.
Momos was bred by Bobo and the Distorted Humor syndicate
and was purchased for $75,000 as a short yearling at the 2019
OBS Winter Mixed Sale. Entered for, but withdrawn from the
Fasig-Tipton July sale, the colt was rerouted for the breeze-up
sales, where De Meric Sales was tasked with the prep work
ahead of this year=s OBS March sale.
Malter has a soft spot for OBS, owing in no small part to the
fact that it was at the auction house=s June sale in 2014 that he
and his partners acquired a chestnut colt by Kantharos for
$43,000. An Indiana-bred, Bucchero took the Ironhorse
partnership on the ride of a lifetime, winning back-to-back
renewals of the GII Woodford S. at Keeneland leading to
consecutive appearances in the GI Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint.
The over-achieving near-millionaire also represented Ironhorse
at Royal Ascot in 2018, finishing a highly creditable fifth in the
G1 King=s Stand S.
While in England, Malter--an enormous fan of Cigar--made the
acquaintance of Riley Mott, the son of Cigar=s Hall of Fame
trainer Bill Mott, who was to be represented on the same
opening-day program by Yoshida (Jpn) (Heart=s Cry {Jpn}) in the
G1 Queen Anne S. The junior Mott recommended to Malter that
he consider bloodstock agent Phil Hager if he was looking for
advice on any future purchases. In July 2018, Hager, a one-time
employee of the Mott barn, left a position in bloodstock services
at Crestwood Farm to launch Taproot Bloodstock. A partnership
was struck. Cont. p8

Ultimately, there was a fair bit of synergy between Malter--
>the pedigree guy=--and Hager, who concentrates more on the
physical in front of him without regard to the page, where it
came to the Distorted Humor colt, who hammered for
$180,000, with Taproot signing as agent for IHR.
AWhat we=ll generally do is not put any horses in his mind,@
Malter said of the team=s approach. AHe=ll do his list and then
we=ll see if there=s overlap and go from there. What was great
about this one, which rarely happens, this was basically on the
top of our list going into the sale. The horse obviously worked
very, very well (:21 flat) and Phil was very happy with the work,
specifically--the way he did it, how professional and forward the
horse was. Once we had that overlap, it was basically the target
of our whole sale. Phil does a tremendous job. Tami Bobo
expressed an interest to stay in for part, and it=s been a pleasure
to have her as part of the team.@
He added, AWhen you have a horse that you kind of model
everything after--with Bucchero being in my mind=s eye--I like to
see very efficient movers and when we saw him in the work, he
just did everything the right way. He kind of just drove himself
into the ground, low, a very driving and efficient mover. There
was no wasted energy. He galloped out extremely well. We
were also really happy that he was coming out of the de Meric
consignment. We have a relationship with Tristan and Valery de
Meric, we know how well they prep them and we knew he=d
probably come out ready to go.@
Malter admitted that the colt was at the upper end of what
they wanted to spend, but that circumstances dictated that they
be aggressive.
AWe felt with what was going on in the world that (a)
potentially this was going to be the last time to buy for a little
bit; and (b) there also may be a little reluctance to spend as
much money at that sale. We did see it as a potential value play,
so we were ready to spend a little bit of money. As far as
Ironhorse, we try to offer a wide range, from $30,000 up to
$200,000, which is about as much as we want to spend. We=re
really looking for value. We were looking to try to get a
$300,000 horse for $150,000, and we weren=t too far off that.
We are going to have to do a little bit of zigging when other
people are zagging and this is a little bit of where I blend my
other business, being a financial planner, with looking at
horses.@
Ironhorse campaigns its horses with Tim Glyshaw--who called
the shots on Bucchero=s career--Mike Trombetta and Mott, but
Malter was keen on getting a horse to Christophe Clement.
AI met [Clement=s son] Miguel at last year's OBS sale and that
got the wheels in motion. I've really enjoyed working with
Christophe and Miguel, they make a very strong team,@ Malter
explained. AWhen we gave the horse to Christophe, we said,
>Maybe this is the horse that gets us back to the Breeders= Cup
Turf Sprint down the road,= but the feedback we got was, >This
horse can really run on dirt, let=s not worry about grass now.=
Initially the goal on this horse was turf sprinting and I don=t think
there are a lot of trainers better at training turf sprinters than
Christophe. But, obviously he showed what he could do right
now on the dirt.@
With that in mind, Momos is a candidate for the six-furlong
GII Saratoga Special S. Aug. 7 and/or the GI Runhappy Hopeful S.
over seven furlongs Sept. 7.
As for Bucchero, he has completed his second year covering
mares at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Florida. As hands-on as he
was during his racing career, Malter has taken an active role in
aggressively marketing his stallion to the breeding public.

tried to take the bull by the horns and do the best that I could by

Malter reports that Bucchero=s first crop numbers a healthy
76 foals.
AThere=s really only one thing I was hoping for with the babies
--that [Bucchero=s] mind would come through,@ he said. AThe
feedback I am getting from the breeders on a consistent basis is

Seven sophomore turf sprinters and one entered only in the
event the race comes off the main track are set to contest
Friday=s GIII Quick Call S. at Saratoga, but it looks all over a two-

Jack and Noah (Fr) (Bated Breath {GB}) is the even-money

year=s GII Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint runner-up Chimney
Rock (Artie Schiller) to a head in Churchill allowance company
May 17 before wiring the field in the June 19 Sir Cat S. at
Belmont, stopping the clock in a slick 1:07.05.
Turned Aside (American Pharoah), seventh in the
aforementioned Atlantic Beach S., bested Wednesday allowance
winner Maxfield Esquire (Discreet Cat) in a November allowance
at the Big A and did the chasing in the Sir Cat, going down by a
length.
Jack and Noah is joined in the Quick Call field by stablemate
Old Chestnut (Speightstown). The front-running winner of the
Ontario Racing S. at Woodbine last September, the Live Oak
homebred son of GISW Pool Land (Silver Deputy) snapped a
streak of four off-the-board finishes with a third-place effort in
the Sir Cat.

MOSCATO SCORES HARD-FOUGHT
SMITHWICK WIN by Don Clippinger
Even Saratoga Race Course bettors, usually a decisive lot,
could not come to a firm commitment in Thursday's GI A. P.
Smithwick Memorial Steeplechase H. Would it be Moscato (GB)
(Hernando {Fr}) or Optimus Prime (Fr) (Deportivo {GB})? They
were that close. Rosbrian Farm's highweighted Optimus Prime
was the betting favorite until a few flashes before post time,
when Bruton Street-US's Moscato benefited from some late
money to become the 1.70-to-1 favorite. Optimus Prime went
off at 1.95-to-1. They were together through the first
1 1/2 miles of the 2 1/16-mile race on Saratoga's inner turf
course, and they provided the Smithwick's drama through the
final furlong. In deep stretch, the Smithwick came down to the
two of them, with Optimus Prime beginning to tire in his first
start in more than 14 months and Moscato surging to a
hard-fought victory by three-quarters of a length. Possessing
excellent speed for hurdlers, the duo saved their assaults for the
end game as first Surprising Soul (Perfect Soul {Ire}) and then
Redicean (GB) (Medicean {GB}) laid down the preliminary pace.
Ridden by Michael Mitchell, Moscato did not begin to move
forward until the final run through Saratoga's backstretch, and

Darren Nagle did not flinch aboard Optimus Prime until the last
fence, located at the end of the backstretch. Thomas Garner,
aboard Redicean, tried a breakaway move on Saratoga's final
turn, but Optimus Prime was eating up ground with surprising
ease.
"I thought we were on trouble on the turn," said Moscato=s
trainer Jack Fisher.
Mitchell was making headway with Moscato, but he was
having to work for it. They weaved through tiring horses, but in
midstretch they were still two lengths behind Optimus Prime,
who had hit the front shortly before the furlong pole. Moscato,
responding to Mitchell's entreaties, gradually pared Optimus
Prime's advantage and took the lead inside the final 70 yards.
With Optimus Prime showing some signs of fatigue, Moscato
was beginning to pull away at the line.
"Coming out of the turn, he got trapped for a little bit of room,
but his stamina kicked in and he really went well to the line and
got his head in front at the right time," Mitchell said.
Winner of the GIII Temple Gwathmey H. at Virginia's
Middleburg Spring Races June 13, Moscato completed the
Smithwick distance in 3:47.51 on firm turf. Trained by Ricky
Hendriks, Optimus Prime finished 2 1/2 lengths ahead of
Riverdee Stable's Gibralfaro (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who also is
trained by Fisher. Redicean finished fourth in a field of eight.
The Smithwick completed a spring hurdle stakes sweep for
Bruton Street-US and Fisher. In addition to Moscato's two wins,
Snap Decision (Hard Spun) won the Virginia Gold Cup's David
Semmes Memorial June 27 and Saratoga's Jonathan Kiser Novice
S. Wednesday. Fisher said Moscato and Snap Decision would be
pointed toward Saratoga's GI New York Turf Writers Cup H.
Aug. 20.

In no hurry while saving ground in fifth beneath Irad Ortiz, Jr.,
she began to rev up midway on the far turn while about three or
four wide and kicked on nicely after a pair of taps on the
shoulder in the stretch to deliver a cozy victory.
Fresco ran well in defeat in all three of her previous starts on
the lawn, including a pair of open company attempts going two
turns at Gulfstream, finishing third Jan. 26 and fourth May 14.
She entered off a nose defeat after leading in the stretch going

"Irad did a great job,@ winning trainer Christophe Clement said.
AHe took her back and saved ground. You could see they did not
finish that fast, so he did the right thing, which was to save
something for the end. It's fun. She broke her maiden in the

DANCING DRAGON (g, 2, Old Forester--Town Dance, by Dance
Brightly) won a pace duel and went clear in the stretch before
getting overhauled late when runner-up debuting here June 28
and was made the 3-2 favorite to go one better as a new gelding
in this spot. Breaking sharply, the homebred dictated terms
through a :22.68 quarter and dug in through the stretch to
determinedly hold off Magic Spin (Twirling Candy) by a nose.
The winner is a full-brother to Seffeara, MSW, $360,387; and a
half to Zazinga (Head Chopper), SW, $157,654. His dam

another one in the win column for her white-hot trainer. The
5-2 second choice was settled in sixth as Stunning Princess
(Cairo Prince) cruised on the front end through fractions of
:24.51 and :49.25. Plum Ali began to roll with a four-wide blitz at
the five-sixteenths marker and came charging down the stretch
to graduate by a good-looking two lengths over the
aforementioned pacesetter. Fillies by Lemon Drop Kid and First
Samurai are in the pipeline for Skipping following the winner.

sharp speed from his rail draw and tired to fourth in a live
Saratoga maiden featuring a trio of additional next-out winners,
including MGSP Ajaaweed (Curlin), at the Spa last summer
Aug. 10. Working well for his return, the 7-2 chance tracked the
early leader from second, made his move as they hit the quarter
pole and powered home nicely to score by 4 1/4 expanding
lengths. Favored firster Instinctive Rhythm (Tapiture) was up for

the brilliant Miesque, Kingmambo, et al, cut out the early
fractions and tired to sixth as the 9-5 favorite in his debut going
a mile over the lawn at Aqueduct Nov. 16. Cutting back to a
sprint off the layoff here, the 7-5 favorite blasted out to the
front, sped through fractions of :21.34 and :44.09, and kept on
motoring down the stretch to graduate by an impresive 4 3/4

is the latest to the races from her dam, who powered her way to
a whopping 11-length victory in the 2009 GI Alabama S. and who
was sold for $1.95 million at Fasig-Tipton November in 2010.
Careless Jewel was subsequently purchased by this breeder for
$1.85 million in foal to Bodemeister at FTKNOV three years later
and Reframe repaid part of that investment when hammering
for $410K at Keeneland September last fall. American Pharoah
