Alumni Spotlight

The Richard Giangiulio Artist Development Scholarship provides support for a current GDYO ensemble member to attend a summer music camp or festival. Participation in summer enrichment is very rewarding for motivated musicians. This year's recipient is GDYO cellist Brian Zhao. Brian is currently an 11th grade student at Plano West Senior High School in Plano, Texas. Brian started his music studies with piano at the age of 7. Two years later, he started learning cello. Since then, he has been studying cello with Mrs. Jungshin Lewis, the principal cellist of the Richardson Symphony Orchestra. In just a few years, he has won grand prizes in various competitions including the Fort Worth Symphony’s Young Artist Competition, Dallas Symphonic Festival Senior String Concerto Competition, Collin County Young Artist Competition, Vernell Gregg Young Artist Competition, and the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. Brian was a finalist in the 11th Annual Lynn Harrell Concerto Competition in 2012 and Lennox International Young Artists Competition for Strings in 2014.

Rising Stars: Current GDYO Musicians

Greg Newton is a composer and a GDYO Wind Symphony alum. We were pleased to

present his piece Portraits of the Southern Sky in March and again in May of 2014.

Greg Newton has lived a majority of his young life in Carrollton, Texas, where he played saxophone in the Hebron High School Band program. Greg began playing saxophone in the beginning band in the sixth grade. By the time

he had graduated high school, his performance resume included selection to the 2011 TMEA 5A All-State Symphonic Band, the Region-24 All-Region Band four times, LISD “Outstanding Soloist” honors five times in seven years, and winner of the Hebron High School Concerto Competition. In addition to success as an individual performer, Greg was a member of the TMEA Texas 5A Honor Band which performed at the 2010 Midwest Clinic in Chicago and the 2011 TMEA Convention in San Antonio. Also, from 2010-11, he was a member of the GDYO Wind Symphony. Currently, Greg attends Baylor University and is in pursuit of an undergraduate degree in music composition. With saxophone as his secondary instrument to composing, he is a member of the Heterodyne Saxophone Quartet, Concert Jazz Ensemble, and Wind Ensembles.

Newton has written numerous works for wind ensemble and chamber ensembles. Aside from concerts by Baylor and their affiliates, Greg’s music is not performed frequently, however, opportunities for his exposure have been trending upward as of late. Notable venues include the 2013 Regional North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) Conference in Fort Worth, TX, the 2014 National NASA Conference in Champaign, IL, and the Hebron High School Wind Symphony Spring Concert in 2013.

Brian has participated in summer festivals such as the Montecito International Music Festival (as a Junior Fellowship Scholarship recipient) and the Indiana Jacobs School of Music Summer String Academy (as a merit scholarship recipient). In 2011 and 2012 Brian was invited by the Plano Symphony Orchestra to serve as a student ambassador for their Community Outreach Program and to give talks and perform to promote the fine arts at several middle schools and elementary schools in the Plano Independent School District. In 2013, Brian was invited by the Richardson Symphony Orchestra to perform for over 3000 Dallas area students. In addition to music, Brian loves to help around the community and serves as a young leader. He was the president of the Shepton High School KEY Club, a volunteering club, and served as the vice president of the Shepton High School Orchestra and president of the Renner Middle School Orchestra. He enjoys helping out in the community by picking up trash in his neighborhood, helping out at nursing homes, and even playing his cello at nursing

YOUR CONTRIBUTION WILL... Grant over $20,000 annually in student scholarship assistance.

Provide over 1,500 complimentary tickets to low-income students, senior citizens, families and teachers.

Grant scholarships to minority students, in an attempt to increase their representation in the classical music world.

Continue to fulfill our mission of providing music education and performance opportunities for youth with demonstrated musical ability.

Your Support is Key The Greater Dallas Youth Orchestras is recognized locally, nationally and internationally as an organization that offers high quality musical instruction and unique performance opportunities for area youth. As a non-profit organization, approximately 37% of our revenue is generated through tuition fees. We rely on contributions made by individuals, foundations, corporations and in-kind services to continue and grow our programs. Help us to give the gift of music to area youth! You can make a contribution online today at www.gdyo.org, mail a check, or call us to discuss a pledge or other plan.

YOU MAY NOT KNOW THAT... GDYO programs are the only venue for orchestral training for many private, home schools, and school districts without an orchestra program.

More than 800 young people auditioned for placement in the orchestras this year.

Any student that successfully auditions for programs is accepted regardless of ability to pay.

460 culturally diverse students come from 50 communities and 120 different schools.

Conductors and coaches come from the Dallas Symphony, Dallas Opera, Dallas Wind Symphony and university faculties.

100% of GDYO students go on to higher education each year.

The arts prepare students for school, work, and life. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has said, “To succeed today and in the future, America’s children will need to be inventive, resourceful, and imaginative. The best way to foster that creativity is through arts education.”

I believe strongly in youth orchestra programs because they provide

children with an experience that gives them a lifetime appreciation for music, either as musicians or audiences. In addition, their musical training helps them develop skills which almost insure their access to higher education. --Kevin Wiggins, Board Member and Alumni Parent

In my 60 plus years of attending classical music concerts I have never experienced a better concert than I heard at the Meyerson with the GDYO on Sunday. The music selection was perfect. The

musicians were excellent – those kids play with such passion and precision, it’s just amazing. It was beautiful. It ran the whole emotional gamut. I was uplifted, I cried, I was transported beyond myself…it was amazing. A great concert! --Patron who attended through the Share the Magic complimentary ticket opportunity

Thank you for giving my daughter the opportunity to

participate in GDYO. Through you, she has learned that loving music also requires hard work and dedication of everyone involved. I hope that she carries that spirit of dedication to wherever her life takes her. --Roger Hwang and Connie Kim, parents

After hearing the side by side concert of GDYO’s Wind Symphony and the Dallas Wind Symphony, one patron wrote, Thanks for the good work you are doing to promote the unique impact that band can have for children. It was inspiring to see all of those youngsters in the Meyerson hearing their peers (and the pros) perform. Who knows what the long term

impact will be? I can only imagine that there will be someone(s) who had their eyes opened to a world they never could have imagined before that experience. --Brian Britt, Director of Fine Arts Richardson Independent School District

The works that you perform on behalf of the music community and students is immensely important, and has been for generations. Our cultural enrichments are deeply encouraged by your thoughtful and committed efforts. Much success as you continue. --John Paul Batiste Chair, City of Dallas Cultural Affairs Commission

Each spring we ask our graduating seniors what their most memorable experience was while in the GDYO program. Here are some of their responses this year: My favorite experience was actually seeing many people from GDYO in other band events throughout the year.

Nelson Acosta, Tuba, Philharmonic Majoring in Music Education

Rehearsals — best part of my weekend!

Miller Susens, Cello, Philharmonic Majoring in Music Education

Seeing the Dallas City Performance Hall for the first time.

Matthew Piccolo, Tenor Trombone, Philharmonic Majoring in Biomedical Engineering

Accompanying Nathan Olson on the Prokofiev Violin Concerto No.2.

Katherine Magee, Violin, Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra Majoring in Environmental Science and French

Performing at the Meyerson Symphony Center and the Dallas City Performance Hall.

Amy Lai, Viola, Philharmonic Majoring in Biology

I'll never forget the experience of playing with so many amazing musicians my age for such an extended period of time! No honor band experience can beat this program…In this program, you make friends, you create better music, and it keeps you wanting more each time.

Ricky Roshell, Oboe, Wind Symphony Majoring in Music Education and Business Management

GDYO launches Jazz Institute Few youth orchestras in the country have established jazz programs as a part of their instrumental and orchestral programs. Fewer still have pursued combo-based programs rather than jazz orchestras or big bands. GDYO's Jazz Institute will provide young musicians in the Dallas Fort-Worth Metroplex the opportunity to learn what it means to be a jazz musician, the chance to build their skills on their instrument and the experience of working with other like-minded young people. Designed to serve 50+ high-school students, this program will offer techniques classes and combo rehearsals with professional jazz musicians and educators, jam sessions in area jazz venues, master classes, and schedule performance opportunities. The program will include instruction in instrumental techniques, improvisation, music theory, music history, composition, musician etiquette and how to function in the music business. The focus of the program is excellence in jazz music education and performance. GDYO is a tuition-based program. Scholarship assistance is available, so that no qualified musician will be turned away because of financial need. Tuition for the GDYO Jazz Institute is $500 per year. How is the program structured? There are three levels (Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced) with three combo groups in each level (nine combos total). A Jazz combo group includes a rhythm section (piano, drums, bass, guitar) with two-four "horns". Students will be involved in a one-hour techniques class specific to their instrument, followed by a one-hour combo rehearsal. Weekly classes take place at the First United Methodist Church in Denton, beginning in September and continuing through May. There will be three jazz concerts and one-two "jam sessions" in established jazz venues.

More information can be found online at www.gdyo.org/jazz

When are auditions? Interested musicians can apply immediately at www.gdyo.org/jazz; auditions will take place in August. There is a $35 non-refundable application fee. Upon completion of the application, musicians will receive detailed information about auditions, including important excerpts to prepare. Why jazz? Why now? For many years, GDYO has considered adding a jazz component to its highly regarded program of orchestra and wind symphony training. To research and prepare for this new program, GDYO called on its existing connections to the strong jazz community in and around Dallas, including the Sammons Center for the Arts (GDYO's "home"), the University of North Texas and other community members. In all these conversations, the level of excitement and support for the establishment of this program has been extremely high.

Our Financial Situation Our Financial Situation is Good Prudent fiscal planning keeps GDYO in a healthy financial position. The organization continues to grow in many ways:

The number of musicians applying to audition—this year there were more than 800 applicants for 460 spaces!

The amount of rehearsal space we need—we have rehearsals in three locations now to accommodate the growing program.

The number of concerts each season—each ensemble performs 3-4 concerts, and total, there are about 20 performances this coming season.

The number of individuals giving to the annual fund—over the past few years, we have increased them number of donors from 82 to 109.

The amount received in grants from foundations—the percentage income from foundations has grown from 20% in 2005 to 27% today.

But We Still Need Your Help. For our future, both immediate and long-term, the support of individual donors is more important than ever. Student tuition payments and ticket sales cover less than 50% of the GDYO operating expenses. The remainder is made up of contributions from corporations, foundations, and individuals. We thank you for your support and hope you will continue to help us keep the GDYO music playing!

Highlights from this spring and summer... ♫ GDYO welcomed Jesse Rosen, President and CEO of the League of American Orchestras, as the Honorary Chair of this year’s annual gala.

The GDYO Spring Gala & Season Finale took place on Sunday, May 18, 2014. We were extremely honored to have Mr. Jesse Rosen serve as our Gala Honorary Chair. Mr. Rosen has been on the front lines of orchestral matters in Minnesota, Detroit, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Philadelphia. The League of American Orchestras is an important institution in the life of an American symphony orchestra. It is the umbrella organization that provides support and resources for all symphony orchestras in the United States, including youth orchestras.

♫ On June 14, 2014, 44 members of the GDYO performed side-by-side with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

At the DSO’s final family concert of the season, GDYO musicians played all the solos on the Bernstein, Three Dance Episodes from On the Town. A review in Theater Jones was very positive, saying “For Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from On the Town, members of the DSO were joined by the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra. The young musicians were obviously well rehearsed as evidenced by a unified sound that on occasion made one squint the ears to be sure that it was not a professional ensemble on stage.”

♫ Then, on June 22, 2014 the GDYO Flute Choir performed in the Meyerson lobby for a reception of the National Conference of Mayors.

This conference brought hundreds of mayors and other officials from across the country here to Dallas.
