2016 Annual ScholarshipsMyrtle Denis Aissen Memorial Scholarship The Class of 1960 always looked up to their instructor, Myrtle Denis Aissen, who graduated from Bellin Memorial Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1929. “She was not only there to teach us nursing, but she was a friend to each of us. The impression she left on our class, as our sponsor and advisor at that time, is one we will never forget. This scholarship is named in memory of her so that her legacy will live on in the lives of others.

*Lois Anderson Memorial ScholarshipLois was a Registered Nurse with over 20 years of dedicated service to the healthcare profession and the community. Following her graduation from St. John’s School of Nursing (Springfield, IL) in 1948, she worked for five years as a surgical nurse in EENT. After taking time off to raise a family, she returned to her position for an additional 14 years. She was then promoted to Assistant Director/Supervisor of her department until her retirement in 1987. After her passing on March 7, 2016, her husband, Rich, and children; Mike, Tom, Larry, and Paul, wish to continue Lois’ legacy and give back by assisting a deserving student in their nursing education. The family wishes to extend their congratulations to all scholarship recipients and offer the best for continued success in their journey to become healthcare professionals.

Anonymous Donor Annual ScholarshipAnonymous donor scholarships come from many donors and are pooled so their gifts can provide maximum educational support for our students. While our anonymous donors have asked us not to acknowledge them by name, their gifts live on in the work of their graduates.

Bellin College Alumni ScholarshipThe Alumni Scholarship originated with a group of committed, active volunteers called the Alumni Council. The goal of the Alumni Council is to provide graduates of Bellin College the opportunities to connect with former classmates, and participate in networking opportunities and events. In addition, the Council coordinates ways of raising funds for the Alumni Scholarship.

The demand for skilled registered nurses and radiologic technicians has never been higher, nor has the cost of a quality healthcare education. The scholarship is awarded annually to financially support the needs of nursing and radiologic science students. This year’s scholarship was made possible by the funds raised at the annual Alumni Homecoming event, the Senior Breakfast Social, general gifts from Bellin Alumni, and the generous gifts made in memory or honor of the following alumni and/or friends of Bellin College:

Connie was provided many wonderful work experiences and opportunities, now which includes a 25 year history of working at the College in a variety of roles. Concerned Hearts Club-Northeastern Region of Wisconsin Scholarship The members of the Concerned Hearts Club - Northeastern Region of Wisconsin have had direct experience with nurses caring for people with cardiac (heart) conditions. With that kind of personal and direct experience, they established a scholarship in 2007 to support nursing students at Bellin College who have the desire to serve the communities of Northeastern Wisconsin as cardiac nurses. They understand personally, the value of excellence in nursing education and the nursing care that results from such education where the values of caring, community, integrity and excellence are the basis of the nursing program.

Dr. Bruce & Diane Fenster Scholarship Drs. Bruce and Diane Lind Fenster know the importance of quality healthcare. They recognize good care when they see it on a daily basis in their work at St. Mary’s Hospital in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, respectively. That is why they choose to support Bellin College. The doctors appreciate the excellent education Bellin College nurses reflect as they continue the tradition of quality health care in our community.

Dr. Andrew Fergus Memorial ScholarshipThe Dr. Andrew Fergus Memorial Scholarship was created by Dr. Peter Fergus, a Green Bay cardiologist, in recognition of the love of education and knowledge that was woven through the life of his father, Andrew Fergus, MD. It is also a tribute to Peter’s mother and Andrew’s wife, Rita, who is a former psychiatric nurse and also a strong believer in education.Throughout his years in Green Bay, Peter Fergus’ appreciation of the many skilled and competent Bellin nurses he has worked with grew. The creation of the Dr. Andrew Fergus Memorial Scholarship allows him to pay tribute to his father while helping Bellin College nursing students reach their educational goals.

First United Methodist Church ScholarshipThe First United Methodist Women’s Group has played an important role in Bellin College history. Numerous ceremonies had been held at First United Methodist Church over the years including cappings and graduations.

Gifts from United Methodist women’s groups and First United Methodist Churches throughout Wisconsin over the years have contributed greatly to the College’s many successes.

The generosity of the First United Methodist Women of Green Bay and the First United Methodist Church of Green Bay led to the creation of these scholarships to help students fulfill their professional goals through service to the community.

Robert & Beverly Nelson Annual ScholarshipBellin College is fortunate to have loyal, dedicated friends who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the goals and vision of our nursing education program. Robert and Beverly Nelson are such friends. Bob’s efforts on Bellin College’s behalf were recognized when he was named a trustee emeritus of Bellin College in 1988.

The philosophy that drives him is simple. One must constantly strive to effectively serve the marketplace but never lose sight of the value of fun. We share that conviction and incorporate it into the Bellin College community.

Bob is the founder and former president of Nelco, Inc. and is a retired attorney with the firm of Nelson and Schmeling. He has been involved with the National Railroad Museum for many years.

He also played the violin in the orchestra for the Pamiro Opera. Beverly shares his passion for music and is a violin teacher. Lillian Elizabeth Peterson Memorial ScholarshipThis scholarship is funded by Bellin College graduate, Karen Brukardt, and named in honor of her mother, Lillian Elizabeth Peterson (1909-1989). Lillian grew up in rural Sheboygan Falls, WI. From her childhood, she dreamed of becoming a nurse. However, her family situation and the economic condition of the United States in the late 1920s required she take a job after high school graduation. Consequently, her dream was passed along to Karen, her firstborn child. One can only imagine the emotions she must have felt the night of August 19, 1966, when she watched Karen graduate from Bellin College. Karen knows she was very proud of her and Karen has always been grateful to her mother for instilling in her a passion and high regard for the profession of nursing. There is no finer way to continue to honor her mother’s life than to help young men and women fulfill their dreams...and Lillian’s!

Radiology Chartered ScholarshipAs part of the Bellin Health System, the radiologists at Radiology Chartered understand the importance of a good education. During the holidays, the radiology departments at Bellin Health give the group of doctors a gift to use as they wish. The doctors have decided to take that gift and donate it to a BSRS student at Bellin College. It is through this generosity of a scholarship that they help ensure the best education possible for Bellin College students that, upon graduating, may also end up working side by side with these doctors.

Al & Ruth Rakow ScholarshipDaughter Carol Shield wrote: “My parent’s home was just a short block and a half from Bellin Hospital. This made it convenient for mother to get to her many volunteer activities for the Bellin Auxiliary. She logged many hours delivering mail, working in the gift shop, collecting menus, working at the front desk, and knitting many caps for newborns. Also, mother and dad often enjoyed meals at the Tree Top Cafeteria in their later years. The hospital was a big part of their lives, and with those memories, the family has given a memorial scholarship in their names.”Al Rakow was born June 19, 1912, and died April 19, 2005. Ruth was born June 9, 1913, and died October 14, 1994.

Charles P. & Kathleen T. Riley ScholarshipKathleen joined the Bellin College Board of Trustees in 1995. She served as chairperson of the Board from 2002 to 2005. Kathleen is a retired financial accountant and continues to serve on the Board. Charles is a retired commercial banker. Scholarship for healthcare’s future employees continues to be a desire for their generosity.

Abner & Jane Sapiro ScholarshipAbner and Jane Sapiro were friends of Bellin College for years, supporting many College endeavors. Their support for the 1995 Endowment Campaign helped secure the future of the College and their scholarship, now carried on by their family since their passing, making it possible for nursing students to complete their nursing education.

Elizabeth Schaub Annual ScholarshipMs. Schaub has contributed money to the College for many years. She had been a faculty member for the school for over 30 years, beginning from the time the first class was admitted. Ms. Schaub, with assistance, established the ‘Bellin Hospital School of Nursing’ in the early 1950’s.

Violet & Jacque Schmidt Memorial ScholarshipAs a tribute to Violet A. Schmidt, a memorial scholarship was created in her name by her husband, Jacque, in 1998. What a fitting tribute: to memorialize someone by donating to the education of student nurses. Violet would be pleased to know that, in her memory, nursing students are carrying out a legacy of commitment and compassion.

Dr. Charles C. Smith Annual ScholarshipThis scholarship is given in memory of Dr. Charles C. Smith’s late wife, Mary Z. Smith, who courageously fought cancer, which finally took her life.

Rochae Smits (DeMoulin) Annual ScholarshipAt times in all of our lives, someone comes along to leave an indelible mark. Rochae Smits has done just that as a mammography technician. Rochae’s many years of experience in breast imaging clearly demonstrates an undying quest for excellence and her ever-present goal for helping patients has inspired a medical colleague to fund this scholarship in her name. This is perhaps the highest tribute one can offer.

As a vital team member in breast imaging, Rochae portrays the very best that a radiology professional can offer and will inspire other future mammography technicians through this scholarship.

Dr. Stephen V. Somerville ScholarshipDr. Stephen Somerville’s support for Bellin College began years ago. The original impetus was to acknowledge the incredibly important role that nurses play in the professional life of a physician. Now retired, but during nearly 30 years of active neurological practice, the nursing profession has been at Dr. Somerville’s side and has had a hand in his decision making. Their role as patient guardian and advocate is well deserved. Dr. Somerville looks forward to supporting Bellin College in the coming years.

United Methodist Women of First United Methodist Church Green Bay ScholarshipThe purpose of United Methodist Women includes ministering to women and children through mission. This scholarship helps us achieve that purpose.

Jean Vaessen Memorial ScholarshipJean Vaessen was special to the Bellin community. As a graduate of its nursing education program, she dedicated her career to Bellin Hospital.

Jean’s caring nature will be long remembered by those who knew her. Family and friends established the endowed Jean Vaessen Scholarship at the Greater Green Bay Area Community Foundation. All memorial gifts were placed in this fund to provide optimal resources for the scholarship awards to Bellin College students. The following poem, written by Jean, reveals the essence of her loving and unselfish nature:

For those I love and for those who love me. When I am gone, release me, let me go.I have so many things to see and do,You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears,Be happy that we had so many years.

I gave you my love, you can only guess how much you gave me in happiness.I thank you for the love you each have shown, and all the support and kindness I have known.

So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must, then let your grief be comforted by trust. It’s only for a while that we must part, so bless the memories that live within your heart.

I won’t be far away, for life goes on,but if you need me, call and I will come...though you can’t see or touch me, I will be near.

And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear all of my love around you, soft and clear... and then...when you must come this way alone... I’ll greet you with a smile and ‘Welcome Home’.

Through Vaessen Scholars, Jean’s memory will live on. Her many contributions to nursing, her patients, family, and friends will fondly be recalled as scholarships are awarded in her name year after year.

Val Valesano Memorial ScholarshipThe creation of the Val Valesano Memorial Fund fulfills one of her wishes. Val, as a recipient of a scholarship, embarked into her nursing career in her hometown, Green Bay. One of her early jobs was as an industrial nurse in a paper mill.
