Last year I reflected on the key role that culture and live arts must play in our society today. As a force for good, in bringing people together, improving our sense of well-being, providing delight and excitement in a shared setting or simply creating a real sense of joy from a new piece of music or a live arts experience. Today I believe that has even more resonance.

At Cambridge Live, the leading independent arts charity in the city, our vision: All Cambridge lives enriched through creative experience, sets the framework for our current strategy and inspires our team and partners to reach for the future. All at Cambridge Live are very clear that delivering on our mission is the best way to play our part in making that contribution to society today: It’s Cambridge; it’s live; it’s a catalyst inspiring shared cultural experiences that everyone can be part of,

creates the thread that links everything we do. From the new; e-Luminate and its magical transformations, and City Roots, which brought together new venues and young musicians, to the well-established; the Friday night, open-air, free concert at the Big Weekend, and our education programme inspiring tomorrow’s artists.

As you read our annual review I hope you share some of that excitement and appreciate the impact that we have made in the last year. None of this would have been possible without the expert staff team, dedicated board, supportive partners and our enthusiastic audiences, who are at the heart of everything we do. Thank you to all of you.

Sara GarnhamChair of Cambridge Live

Our second year was characterised by continuing change and evolution. We worked to shape Cambridge Live into a robust and yet creative charitable business to ensure that we can thrive and grow. Alongside this inevitable organisational development, we have also taken significant steps towards the long term strategic priorities we identified in year one.

We welcomed the e-Luminate Cambridge Festival into Cambridge Live and delivered the festival for the first time in February 2017. We also launched a brand new festival, City Roots, which embraces the spirit of the Folk Festival and aims to strengthen the links between folk and roots music and the City of Cambridge. City Roots allowed us the opportunity to forge and develop new relationships across the city, which in turn has added to Cambridge’s cultural landscape in a way that could only be achieved through collaboration.

We have also had to ensure the development of our core activity, namely the Folk Festival, Corn Exchange and delivering the City Events programme. In 2016 the Cambridge Folk Festival had another sell out year where our line-up had music aficionados from across the country and beyond, flock to the Festival. In the Corn Exchange a particular highlight was the Syd Barrett celebration concert, this was an emotional evening where we also unveiled a public piece of art commemorating one of the city’s most celebrated sons. Running a company of the size and complexity of Cambridge Live is not always an easy task. As ever we rely on our commercial revenue streams and the support of partners and supporters to achieve our artistic vision and our commitment to participation and education. I would like to thank everyone who has supported us on our journey so far.

Cambridge Corn Exchange is the largest arts and entertainment venue in the eastern region and we have created a diverse programme that included rock and pop, comedy, classical music and theatre which has thrilled audiences in a year of amazing discovery.

Page 5: Annual Review 2016 17 - Cambridge Live

The incomparable folk legend Christy Moore returned to Cambridge for his only english festival appearance in 2016, with an electric set that amazed the crowds at Cherry Hinton Hall. Gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello brought Friday night to a wild and energetic close, finishing their set by crowd surfing over the audience using their bass drums as surfboards. Award-winning four piece Darlingside, performing for the first time outside of North America were the surprise hit of the festival. Fresh from a performance earlier in the day

on stage 2 they stepped into the breach when a mainstage slot needed to be filled at late notice and stole the hearts of the audience with their glorious vocal harmonies.

New favourites were discovered at the ever popular emerging talent stage The Den, whichhosted intimate sets from up-and-comingyoung artists like Mortal Tides, AmythystKiah and Wildwood Kin. The Festival plays an important role in the development of the folk artists of the future.

Cambridge Folk Festival is a critically acclaimed music festival, widely acknowledged as one of the world’s leading folk festivals.

new this year: cambridge in a new light

In its first year run by Cambridge Live, e-Luminate Cambridge Festival exhibited 24 stunning light installations which transformed the city of Cambridge during February 2017.

e-Luminate uses the historic city of Cambridge with its stunning architecture as the perfect canvas. An event at the forefront of art and technology, ephemeral light art installations played with the richness and diversity of the urban landscape.

Highlights of the 2017 festival included: Gloria Ronchi and Claudio Benghi’s Kaleidescope of glowing butterflies that came alive at night along the river bank by Magdalene College; the Cambridge Whale, created by Alice Turner and of course a spectacular light show that was projected onto Senate House based on the work of Robert Grosseteste created by Ross Ashton and Karen Monid.

You don't need wellies or sun cream to enjoy @CamFolkFest - February now brings #Cityroots to #Cambridge #livemusic@FelixCambridge

new this year: A city wide festival celebrating folk and roots music

February 2017 saw the launch of City Roots, a spin-off of the Cambridge Folk Festival, which brought together multiple venues across the city.

These included the Corn Exchange, Cambridge Junction, the Cambridge Union and the Portland Arms in a festival celebrating folk and roots music. Headline acts included Mary Chapin Carpenter and Transatlantic Sessions at the Corn Exchange and Jim Moray and Mad Dog McCrea at the Cambridge Junction.

The festival also featured the artist development stage, The Den, in a temporary home at the intimate CB2 Café. We also staged an industry day for young and developing musicians called Creative Roots at Anglia Ruskin University and brought Cambridge alive through a network of buskers performing through the city.

Highlights Farm City, Found Soundsclassical concert series (May & June 2016)We took students from Netherhall School in Cambridge to Wimpole Farm to participate in a series of inspiring workshops, led by our artist in residence Dame Evelyn Glennie, with the aim to explore sound and how it is created.

After the workshops the project culminated with the students joining the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on stage at the Corn Exchange to perform a 6-minute piece commissioned by Cambridge Live and RPO to celebrate Dame Evelyn's 50th birthday year.

Tindersticks Film Project cornex:discover(May 2016)On 6th May 2016 alternative rock band Tindersticks came to the Corn Exchange as part of our cornex:discover series to perform a special “cine-concert”. To accompany this unique performance we worked with four up-and-coming local film-makers in a project to create a short film inspired by Tindersticks album The Waiting Room.

This opportunity enabled these young film-makers develop their skills by creating their own short in a professional environment where they were supported by professional film-maker Ryd Cook. This project culminated with a screening of the shorts before the Tindersticks show to people from the Cambridge film scene, local press and Tindersticks themselves.

The Hub Folk FestivalThe Hub is committed to identifying, supporting and encouraging young andemerging talent. Workshops for childrenand young people took place every day and were led by musicians who performed at the Festival.

Throughout our work we provide professional development opportunities through both performance and residency to develop and nurture the artists of tomorrow.

Highlights Young Composer in Residence: Jay Richardson classical concert seriesContinuing our work with our young composer in residence we asked Jay Richardson to write a piece for Alison Balsom and young brass players from Cambridgeshire Music. The new piece called ‘Distraction’ was performed at Alison’s sold out Corn Exchange recital and featured a solo trumpet line played by Alison and 70 young musicians playing the full range of brass instruments used in brass bands and orchestras.

Creative Rootsfolk festivalWe are passionate about working with and creating development opportunities for young people within the music industry. City Roots has an aim to help, develop and give professional advice to some of the musicians and music professionals of the future.

As part of this we organised a free to attend music industry day at Anglia Ruskin University, which saw over 100 young and emerging musicians and young people interested in working within the music industry attend workshops and masterclasses specifically aimed at professional development in this area.

The Den folk festivalAs well as featuring up-and-coming artists in its line-up, The Den is committed to giving younger artists a platform to showcase their talent. We are extremely proud to be an industry leader in developing young folk talent, alumni of the stage includes Nick Mulvey and Jake Bugg and in 2016 featured Amythyst Kiah and Wildwood Kin. City Roots also mirrored The Den with an artist development stage that featured emerging talent such as Mortal Tides, Janet Devlin and SJ Mortimer.

Participation is at the heart of what we as a charity do. We aim to challenge and educate through accessible immersive experiences.

Cambridge Live delivered a programme of free and inclusive City Events, provided by Cambridge City Council, reaching a wide demographic of people from Cambridge and beyond.

We connect Cambridge’s diverse and evolving communities together through Cambridge City Council's Events programme to celebrate the city and each other. The Big Weekend & cambridge mela The Big Weekend brings approximately 30,000 people to Parker's Piece in the centre of Cambridge for three days of family fun, community activity, fireworks and fantastic music. In 2016 The Big Weekend featured Boney M, Desmond Dekker's Aces and the amazing celebration of Indian and Asian culture that is the Cambridge Mela.

Jazz & Brass in the parksSet in the idyllic parks of Cambridge, Jazz & Brass in the Parks is another Cambridge City Council event we deliver that brings music and dancing to the city residents throughout the summer.

Midsummer Fair & MarketContinuing the 800 year old tradition, the ancient fair and market has been visiting Cambridge for centuries. In 2016 the market was opened by the mayor of Cambridge who upheld the tradition of marking the opening with the traditional scattering of newly-minted pennies among the crowd.

Bars & Catering We run our own bars at the Corn Exchange and Guildhalls and this year we expanded our in-house bars and catering operation to include running the public bar at The Big Weekend.

Conferences & Private Hires We delivered large conferences on behalf of clients such as ARM, McKinsey and the Royal Society Of Chemistry and held over 100 private hire events in the Guildhalls including corporate, charity, and academic events as well as weddings, exhibitions, and balls.

Corporate Partnerships We worked with a range of corporate partners on sponsorship for our major events. Software company Real VNC supported our Bonfire Night campaign by securing 38 sponsors for that event. Boldfield Computing generously supported the Classical Concert Series as the main sponsor and introduced their clients to world class talent. We worked with a range of new pouring rights partners for the Folk Festival including Thatchers Cider, Otter, Bombay Sapphire as well as our long-term supporter, Guinness.

Cambridge Live Tickets Building on the success of the previous year Cambridge Live Tickets has continued to develop a diverse and growing client base. There was significant growth in this area of the business with clients such as Cambridge Literary Festival and The Park Theatre in North London choosing Cambridge Live Tickets as their ticketing partner.

Create programmeCreate is our flagship programme which introduces young people to classical music and develops classical artists and composers. Subscribers and attendees of our Classical Concert Series concerts generously provided donations towards the programme. The funding supported projects across the series and also attracted local music store, Millers, to come on board as a sponsor to the programme.

The 1965 Club In honour of the year that the Cambridge Folk Festival was founded, we launched a new membership scheme for supporters of the Folk Festival. Members join at one of three different levels and donate towards the

Festival’s participation and artist development work. Whilst enjoying benefits such as priority booking and exclusive news content, members know that they are helping to launch the careers of the folk artists of tomorrow.

Box Office Donations All ticket bookers are invited to make a donation to the charity when they purchase a ticket. Donations made via box office average of £2.40 per transaction and contribute to our wider charitable objectives.

Cambridge Live Trading is set up to maximise our commercial activity to support our artistic and charitable work.

We rely on the generous support of our donors and funders to enable our participation and artist development work to develop and flourish.

‘I can’t recommend Cambridge Live enough for small to medium sized theatres looking to increase their box office capacity and deliver a fantastic level of service’Dawn James, Park Theatre Marketing and Sales Manager

‘Working with Cambridge Live is great because it is hugely reassuring to have such a forward facing, professional presence at any festival event.’Anna Millward, Cambridge Literary Festival Manager
