To Celebrate Life awards $382,000 in 2019 to 22 Bay Area nonprofit organizations.In April 2019, To Celebrate Life Breast Cancer Foundation granted $382,000 to 22 Bay Area nonprofit organizations. These funds assisted underserved women and men with breast health issues by providing emergency and direct services, financial support, complementary holistic therapies and diagnostic services. Navigational services provided patient advocacy for benefits and treatment, and emotional support programs during and after treatment.

A message from our Board President

On June 5, 2019 To Celebrate Life Breast Cancer Foundation lost a dear friend, mentor and Board member.

After being diagnosed with early stage breast cancer in late 2006, and grateful for the exceptional medical support she’d received, Judy wanted to find a way to give back. She was introduced to the Foundation through Kristen Bennett, her friend and colleague at Williams Sonoma, Inc.

In 2007, Judy joined the TCL volunteer community and served on the Physician Escort, Model Luncheon and various other model teams for six years. In 2011, Judy joined the Board of Directors serving as Recording Secretary/Treasurer and was a member of the Executive Committee and board liaison to the Volunteer Committee.

Judy was retired from a long career in the retail industry, primarily in IT, managing multi-million dollar projects in support of business growth initiatives and technological expansion. Through that experience, she brought to the Foundation extraordinary leadership ability. Judy was a Marin resident until June 2009 before moving to Sonoma.

In 2018, Judy successfully completed treatment for a second breast cancer occurrence and had just received a third diagnosis shortly before her passing. Judy was passionate about the Foundation’s mission to support underserved breast cancer patients through our Breast Cancer Grants Program. In her memory, the Judy Hallman Legacy Fund has been established to benefit To Celebrate Life’s grants program, that was an important part of her life.

The TCL community is deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend. We will miss her genuine kindness, compassion and quick wit.

In loving memory

To Celebrate Life continues to successfully support breast cancer patients in our 9 Bay Area counties. But with that success also came the challenges of 2019, as we faced the tragic and unexpected loss of the Board’s longstanding, senior Treasurer, Judy Hallman. We immediately worked to stabilize our Board of Directors, fill the position, and promote healing both inside and outside the organization. Remarkably, during this same time, where many organizations might falter, the community gathered around us and donors requested that a memorial fund be established in Judy’s honor. Further, funds raised from Stepping Out increased 10% and new first-time donors increased by 60%, enabling the Foundation to grant out more funds in the upcoming year, increasing the reach to more underserved breast

cancer patients.

After 24 years, To Celebrate Life remains strong and dedicated to the support we provide to Bay Area organizations, supporting breast cancer patients. On March 26, 2019, we distributed our 2019-20 funding of $382,000 to 22 grantees. This last round of grant distribution put our total to date over $6 million! We are very proud of this accomplishment.

In 2020, we find ourselves facing a new challenge, the COVID-19 pandemic. The unknowns of this global pandemic are forcing us into new territory and ultimately new ways of fundraising. Stepping Out, our signature event and fundraiser, brings breast cancer patients together in a life affirming experience. Because the health and safety of our models and gala guests is paramount, this year will look different as we are forced into careful consideration of how or if we will be celebrating and Stepping Out. However, we know that with the support and dedication of our volunteers and donors, we will adapt.

It is through challenges we face that we learn and grow. Despite the setbacks, we believe in our hearts that No one should face breast cancer alone and we are dedicated to ensuring no one will.
