As it did 120 years ago, the historic Roycroft Campus continues to inspire visitors from across the nation and around the world to engage in the creativity and philosophy of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Today we work toward further preservation and restoration of this National Historic Landmark, and the creation of innovative ways for visitors to experience the Campus. Our intention is focused on expanding opportunities to interact with artisans, tour the unique architecture, and explore the historic impact of Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters.

With the leadership of the Roycroft Campus Board of Directors, the dedication of the staff, and of course the generous support of our donors, members, volunteers and community partners, we have been able to strengthen our national significance and take another step closer to realizing our dream of a re-unified Campus. In the coming year, we plan to center our energies and resources on new challenges, collaborating with individuals, institutions, and foundations whose interests and passions match our priorities so that we can ensure lasting change. As our vision transforms into reality, we encourage you to continue with us on this journey. Together we can make a significant effect on the Campus’ future.

The Roycroft Campus would truly not be where it is today without the help and dedication of others. Through the support of over 60 volunteers and docents we can accommodate thousands of guests who visit and participate in events, tours, and classes throughout the year.

One of the main areas which our volunteers help is with our larger events, especially the three Campus Art Shows and Annual Fundraisers. To make events of this size and length run smoothly takes many dedicated helpers giving of their time and talent. On a smaller scale, our volunteers also help with the six yearly gallery openings in the Neil and Barbara Chur Family Gallery, including two East Aurora Art Walks, as well as monthly Roycroft Film Society screenings and bi-monthly Roycroft Book Club discussions.

Additionally, our trained docents play an important role in telling the story of the Roycroft. Throughout our regularly scheduled tour season, May through October, roughly 275 tours are largely docent-led. These guides are true ambassadors for the Campus, sharing the history of the Roycroft and showcasing the importance of this National Historic Landmark to hundreds of visitors from around the world. They also assist with school and tour groups, create and give specialty tours, and lead private tours year-round.

Behind the scenes, volunteers stuff and stamp thousands of mailings, catalog books, magazines, photographs and artifacts in The Museum, and help with the inventory of the Copper Shop twice a year. Also, the creation of a volunteer-based Garden Committee in 2017 will help maintain and expand the gardens throughout the Campus and work to create a landscape plan for the future.

This dedicated group of individuals are an important part of the Roycroft community. Their positive attitudes, commitment, and enthusiasm demonstrate one of the core values of Elbert Hubbard – finding joy in one’s work. We cannot thank them enough for all that they do.

R O Y C R O F T F I L M S O C I E T YThe Roycroft Film Society (RFS) continues its mission to bring quality foreign, independent and documentary films to the Western New York area. The RFS reached a milestone in January of 2017 screening its 150th film. In August, they held their fourth annual outdoor film under the stars in front of the Power House. Coming in March of 2018, the group will celebrate its 20th anniversary of inception, with a schedule including films from Australia, France, Germany, England, Japan and the United States.

T H E R O Y C R O F T H I S T O R Y C O U R S EThe Roycroft History Course continues to be very popular. We ran two different programs in 2017; the Spring semester’s theme was “Elbert Hubbard’s Buffalo,” where we examined Hubbard’s early life, his time with the Larkin Soap Company, how Buffalo would have looked in the late 1800s, and the connection between Theodore Roosevelt and the Roycroft. The Fall semester was titled, “Creating and Collecting Roycroft,” and focused on some of the original artists who helped design and create Roycroft products, including Herb Buffum (furniture), Victor Toothaker and Karl Kipp (copper), and Dard Hunter (stained glass and graphic design). Also, in celebration of the grand opening of the Campus’ new museum, Historian and Collector, Robert Rust, presented on collecting and exhibiting Roycroft history.

T H E R O Y C R O F T B O O K C L U B“Pure literature and good books are meat and drink. They are the silos that feed the mind, nourishing and energizing it.” – Elbert Hubbard

The Roycroft Book Club continues to follow in the footsteps of Elbert Hubbard and become immersed in the love of literature. For the second year in a row the Club read and discussed six books, with attendance increasing almost 40%.

T H E M U S E U M O N T H E R O Y C R O F T C A M P U SStemming from the success of recent restoration and preservation projects, and the receipt of several large-scale donations of original Roycroft artifacts, the Campus was proud to open The Museum in September of 2017. Located in the historic Print Shop, The Museum is the new permanent home of the Campus’ historic collection of documents, books, furniture, and artwork; showcasing the Roycroft’s history and Elbert Hubbard’s legacy. This expansion of the guest experience provides visitors the opportunity to see rare, one-of-a-kind letters and artifacts, and learn more about the people, products and philosophy that made Hubbard and the Roycroft an important part of the Arts & Crafts Movement.

The Museum is open Wednesdays – Sundays, 10am to 5pm, and by appointment on Mondays and Tuesdays. General admission is $5; free for Campus members.

Jerry was born and raised in Western New York. He retired from Pratt & Lambert United Paint as CEO in 1996 after numerous years with the company. He generously dedicated his time and talents to supporting causes in and around Buffalo and was very involved with many organizations to include: serving as president of the Nichols School Board and The Buffalo Club, as well as chairman of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy and the Canisius College Board. He was very involved with the Catholic Church and served in many capacitities both at Christ the King Seminary and with Catholic Healthcare groups. His services to his community are too many to list.

In 2013, Jerry graciously accepted a Director’s position for the Roycroft Campus Corporation (RCC), Board of Directors. He served on the Governance and Finance Committees and gave key financial advice to advance the Corporation’s mission and goals. Jerry could be seen regularly on the Campus introducing new people and acquaintances to the history and vision of the RCC and attracting new funding sources to secure the success of its future plans. Jerry was a humble and kind man who

always took the time to listen and made you feel like you were a very important and special person. He was the beloved husband of Barbara and father to Dr. Gregory and Wendy, and loved spending time with his five grandchildren.

On September 19, 2017, Jerry passed away after a brief illness. He is greatly missed and will always be remembered.

Rita was born and raised in Buffalo, NY. She graduated top of her class from Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital, School of Nursing Program. She ran the Out-Patient Department, and while working there, met and later married Dr. Elbert (John) Hubbard III. The couple resided in East Aurora, NY, where John’s grandfather, Elbert Hubbard, founded The Roycroft. Rita was very interested and proud of the family’s historic legacy. She spent endless hours assisting her father-in-law, Elbert (Bert) Hubbard II, categorizing and documenting their family heritage. Also, Rita and John were active members of The Aurora Historical Society where Rita fulfilled a longstanding Board position. After many years, The Roycroft closed for restoration, and Rita along with the rest of the Roycroft Revitalization Corporation (RRC) Board of Directors, worked diligently to restore and re-open the Inn. Rita participated in all the fundraising efforts required for the completion of the restoration. Proudly, along with her fellow Board members, Rita and John attended the grand reopening of the

Roycroft Inn in 1995. Further, Rita was now a dedicated docent at the Inn; where people would seek her out for her clever wit and her real insight on the family history.

In 2003, the RRC voted to change the organization’s name to the Roycroft Campus Corporation, and Rita continued to serve on the Board as they undertook the task of restoring the rest of the Roycroft Campus. Rita, along with her husband John, their daughter Mary and her children, have shared the importance of the Roycroft Campus with people around the world.

On December 22, 2017, Rita at the age of 95 years old, passed away in her home with the love of her family. She was a Matriarch leaving a strong legacy which she has passed on to her daughter, 3 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Proving once again, the Hubbard Men were not afraid of a strong woman.

Dorothy grew up near Genesee and Bailey in Buffalo, NY. She knew about the Roycroft because her grandfather was a contractor who admired Arts and Crafts architecture. When she and her husband, Sidney, decided they needed a bigger home, they looked in East Aurora, which was more centrally located in Sid’s sales territory. They bought their home at 429 Oakwood Avenue around the corner from the Campus. In the late 1960s, The Roycroft Inn, which was in rough shape, was put on the market.

Through a dancing group Dorothy and Sid had come to know June and Ralph Turgeon, who withKitty and Frank Turgeon, had a number of restaurants in Buffalo. Dorothy connected the Turgeons with the seller of the Inn and that is how Kitty began her love of all things Roycroft. Dorothy and Sid docented for many years at the Inn, and Dorothy had a wonderful friendship with Kitty from then on.

Dorothy also felt blessed when the Wendt Foundation brought Martha Augat to serve as Inn Keeper.

Dorothy loved the Roycroft and hosting Elder Hostel (Road Scholar) events, sitting on the Peristyle for the Fourth of July parade, and all of the warmth so associated. On December 5, 2017, Dorothy passed away at the age of 94. Her presence and passion for the Roycroft will be greatly missed.

J O E W E B E RAuthor, printer, illuminist and book-binder, Joe Weber has been involved in graphic arts for many years. In 2003, he discovered the Roycroft Renaissance and soon took on the project of resurrecting the Roycroft printing efforts and the Roycroft Print Shop. He has written, printed, illumined and bound several copies of 18 different books, all but a few of which he has written himself. Joe is an active Companion of the Guild of St. George, an organization founded by John Ruskin in 1871 in England to promote Arts and Crafts ideals and philosophy. He is also a juried artisan with the Roycrofters-At-Large-Association.

N E C O L E W I T C H E RFrom curating to modeling to painting, Necole Witcher has been involved in the art business since 2007. She has a background in watercolor, art history and botany. Necole currently works at the Illumination Studio and Press Room in the Roycroft Print Shop, and continues to promote and educate people in this age-old art form. My passion for all things Roycroft began in the spring of 1989, when I first traveled to East Aurora. I toured the Roycroft Campus and saw the restoration and preservation efforts that were so desperately needed. I also had the pleasure of meeting Bruce Bland, who owned an extensive collection of Hubbard’s A Message to Garcia, as well as Charles Hamilton, who had worked closely with Elbert Hubbard II to produce As Bees in Honey Drown, and several other important books on the Roycrofters. These experiences inspired me to start supporting the early efforts of the Campus’ rebirth.

Back home I read all I could find about the Hubbard Family and the Roycrofters, and began collecting Roycroft books and copper desk-set pieces. I particularly admired the Roycroft’s focus on fine printing and book design, as well as their reproduction of works by progressive authors

like Emerson, Thoreau, Ingersoll and Ricker. Not to mention Elbert Hubbard’s inspirational writing and his wife Alice’s books and work in the women’s rights field. I also began practicing calligraphy, studied book arts and worked with book binding over the next several years.

For the past 30 years, my interest in Roycroft has grown into a passion for the preservation of the Campus and legacy of the Roycrofters. I continue to visit and I’m thrilled to see the progress during each trip. With so many dedicated individuals working to see the Campus succeed, the Roycroft spirit and heritage will certainly continue to flourish. I am thankful for the community of individuals who are dedicated to the Campus’ renaissance efforts and look forward to hearing your stories in the future.

The Roycroft Campus is pleased to announce our 4th Art Lottery which will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018. Upon arrival, attendees will receive one “lottery” ticket for a piece of art valued at or above the event ticket price, and a signed print from the event’s featured artist, Shawn Krueger. When the lottery begins, each ticket holder will be able to select a piece to take home with them; a variety of mediums will be available. There will also be a seperate wine raffle. This unique event will help us raise funds toward our efforts to preserve and restore the National Historic Landmark Campus.

As restoration work moves forward throughout the Campus, we continue to develop and expand the visitor experience and focus on areas where we can tell the history of the Roycrofters. In the past few years, six artist studios, the Press Room, illumining studio and Museum have all opened in the Print Shop. The next addition to this building will be a book making exhibit which will tell the process of how a Roycroft Book was made through text, historic photos and artifacts.

The exhibit is planned for the lower level of the Print Shop between the Artist Wing and the Press Room. It will create a nice transition from the art studios to the historic presses, and turn a rather dark, cold hallway into a more welcoming space. The display will begin with Hubbard’s initial inspiration, specifically the works of William Morris and his Kelmscott Press. Samples of Elbert’s handwritten notes will then be the basis for the printed work. Next we’ll show the procedures of typesetting, locking up a chase, printing a folio, illuminating pages, binding the signatures, and finally, tooling and covering the book. Seeing the whole process, including the amount of time, people and craftsmanship, creates a greater appreciation of what it took to make these handmade books.

This exhibit will enhance the growing visitor experience on the Campus and serve as an educational tool for groups, especially from local schools, to better understand the

historical significance of the Roycroft.

Contemporary Painter, Charles Clough, is an East Aurora native. In 1974, Clough, along with a small group of others, founded Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center which is located in the city of Buffalo. One of his newer endeavours is a public painting studio, located in the Artist Wing of the Print Shop.

Since Autumn 2015 over 400 participants ranging in age from 15 months to 92 years old, from around the world, have worked to create “Clufffalo: Seasons paintings.” Charlie Clough hosts up to six people per workshop each season in his Print Shop studio. The participants create a painting by adding layers of color to the piece. At the end of the season, Clough grinds through the layers of paint to complete the work and produces an art history book with photos of the participants and their individual layer of the painting. The sale of each Season’s painting supports the workshop.

Also, for more than 40 years Clough has gathered and tended to his archive. This includes paintings, drawings, photographic material and a 2,000-volume library. Currently this material is being installed on the third floor of Print Shop’s tower with the intention that it becomes publically available by Autumn 2018.

P R I N T S H O P & C O P P E R S H O P R E S T O R A T I O NAlthough much restoration has been completed on the Roycroft Campus over the past 20 years, our work is still not done. Currently, two major capital projects are in the planning stages.

First, the next phase of restoration for the Copper Shop is slated to begin January 2019 and be completed by late April 2019. This project will include replacement of all floors, like and kind, with plans to salvage as much of the historic wood flooring and reuse it throughout the Shop. Also, new energy efficient heating will be installed, and the interior will be reconfigured to restore the original open floor plan, with removal of the modern fireplace in the Finishing Room. Lastly, the addition of an ADA compliant public restroom will improve the shopping experience for our customers. The estimated cost of this project is around $400,000, and the Copper Shop will temporarily be relocated to the Assembly Room in the Power House while renovations are taking place.

The second capital project will focus on further restoration of the Print Shop, and has been deemed structurally essential within the next ten years. At an estimate cost of $2.5 million dollars, funding for this project is critical. Items to be addressed will include roof reconstruction, at approximately one million dollars, and mechanicals (electrical, heating, AC, etc.), which is estimated at $750,000. To date, we have already invested over $180,000

in emergency repairs, and re-allocated operating funds for the creation of The Museum, the Press Room, Artist Wing, Dard Hunter Hall, as well as interior/exterior painting.

These projects are mission critical, and once they are completed the Copper Shop and Print Shop will be stable for the next 100 years!

In recent years, the Roycroft Campus has truly experienced a rebirth. Many infrastructure projects have been completed to preserve the one-hundred-plus-year-old buildings, and the guest experience is thriving through art galleries, artist studios, historic tours, the Press Room and, of course, The Museum; a brand new attraction that exhibits the rich history of the Campus, and its founder, Elbert Hubbard.

Supporting the Campus through membership and the annual fund is a wonderful way of investing in future renovations and improvements. Restoration and preservation of the Campus’ infrastructure is an ongoing project, and preparations are now underway for long delayed repairs needed in the Copper Shop totaling $400,000, for new electrical, flooring, heating and enhanced guest accessibility. There is still much work to be done, so please consider your support to benefit the Roycroft Campus. A membership brochure, with an annual fund option, has been provided. These funds help ensure the Campus’ sustainability for generations to come.

The Guild of St. George is a charitable trust based in England, with a worldwide membership, that works to uphold the values and principles put into practice by its founder, John Ruskin (1819-1900). Members of the Guild are called Companions, and they wish to share their love of all things Ruskin by holding regular events. Ruskin and Hubbard shared similar values and principles, making the Roycroft Campus a perfect venue for their 2018 event, to be held on September 28TH & 29TH. The event will feature talks and other activities that celebrate the ideas of Ruskin, Hubbard and Morris. There will be speakers from both the Guild and from the Roycroft Campus. Through this conference the Guild hopes to gather more interest in the life and ideas of Ruskin, and to spread these ideas that are held in common with those who love Roycroft. They also aim to strengthen their partnership with the Roycroft, and their presence in North America.

Further, Rita was now a dedicated docent at the Inn; where people would seek her out for her clever wit

Dorothy loved the Roycroft and hosting Elder Hostel (Road Scholar) events, sitting on the Peristyle for the Fourth of July parade,
