Annual Report 2015 - 2016

Dearest Friends and Supporters,

We joyfully celebrate the 25th Birthday of the Merrimack Valley Food Bank!

Fiscal year 2016 brought another period of growth in the numbers of people served and pounds of

nutritious food donated and distributed to our neighbors in the region.

Over the course of the year, we distributed nearly 4 million pounds of nutritious food

to those who could not afford to purchase it, serving 80,324 of our neighbors at our

member food pantries and meal programs in June 2016 alone.*

Your gifts of food, funds and time continue to nourish children, seniors, veterans, college students

and working families.

On behalf of our board of directors, staff, and the hundreds of thousands who benefit from the

Merrimack Valley Food Bank’s hunger relief initiatives - THANK YOU for your commitment to our

organization and our mission. *Pounds Reported from July 2015 through June 2016

Food Distribution

MVFB’s primary program, Food Distribution, manages the safe storage,

transportation, and dispersal of food received from the federal The Emer-

gency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), Massachusetts Emergency Food

Assistance Program (MEFAP), donations from individuals, businesses, food

companies, retailers, distributors and manufacturers, and local farms, gar-

deners, and farmers markets.

MVFB serves 135

member agencies

(such as food

pantries or meals

programs) in 47

communities in

Massachusetts and

New Hampshire!

Mobile Pantry

The Mobile Pantry is a home grocery delivery service for homebound elderly

and disabled Greater Lowell residents. MVFB provides bags of groceries once

a month consisting of roughly 35 pounds of nutritious food items. Having the

same volunteer bring their groceries each month provides clients with a wel-

come social connection! In Fiscal Year 2016, the Mobile Pantry delivered gro-

ceries to 317 enrolled clients and made 73 one-time emergency deliveries.

Operation Nourish

Operation Nourish is a children’s feeding program in which MVFB partners

with thirteen Lowell Public Schools and Middlesex Community College to

address the needs of students who may struggle with hunger on weekends

and school vacations when they are not able to get free meals at school. At

some schools, selected students receive a bag of food to take home twice

each month. At other schools, a box of food is delivered monthly and made

available for students to take items as needed when they are hungry.

Community Market

The Community Market provides residents at

four Lowell housing complexes with fresh pro-

duce and food staples from July through Octo-

ber. This also provides an opportunity for resi-

dents to come together and enjoy one another’s

company.

“The students definitely

feel more connected to

the community and

cared for. “

- Operation Nourish

Food Rescue

Our team picks up donations of perishable

food from supermarkets three days a week

and distributes that food to many of our

member agencies. This makes food available

that would otherwise have been disposed of

by the supermarkets. Thanks to our partner-

ships with Stop & Shop and Hannaford in

Lowell and Chelmsford, 95,952 pounds of

food were rescued this year!

Summer Lunch

In the summer of 2015, MVFB’s Summer

Lunch program provided more than 13,000

lunches and snacks to children participat-

ing in summer activities in Lowell. We also

partnered with the participating sites to

help provide an outing to a Lowell Spinners

game for participating children!
