Annual Report July 1, 2010-June 30, 2011
“To enhance the independence, productivity and quality of life of children and adults who are blind or visually impaired”
ANNUAL MESSAGE
Carmen MillerPresident
Dr. Elly du Pré Executive Director
Dear Friends,This year, the Lighthouse has worked hard, even with a tighter budget than ever before, and we can all be proud that the people we serve are achieving success daily and so is the Lighthouse itself. Our faithful stewardship of our resources has been recognized by Charity Navigator with their prestigious highest award: Four Stars.
Still, we always strive to do better. The average new Lighthouse client has already been visually impaired for over a year, and usually many years, during which time one avenue after another led to disappointment. With your support—to refer someone, volunteer, and donate your precious resources—the Lighthouse will reach people sooner and spare them some of that heartache.
You can save someone’s life by connecting them to skills that prevent a fall, to people who restore confidence, to friends who lift spirits. The sooner your friend, family member or someone you know can get involved with our exceptional staff, meet peers who are also learning new skills, receive assistance with organizing in the home, and return to activities that have brought a lifetime of enjoyment, the better.
The Lighthouse is the only agency in Broward County providing the specific, accredited training programs that make it possible for blind or severely visually impaired individuals to regain independence and hope.
In the fiscal year just completed, Lighthouse of Broward served 28 percent more people than ever before, while holding the line on any spending increases. That means a lot more people who are blind or visually impaired are contributing as full partners in their families, school, work and community. Thank you, again, for being a part of our success.

2010-2011 YEAR IN REVIEW
Sensory Garden Becomes Popular Concert Venue
Thanks to the vision of Lighthouse Board Member John DeSouza, the Sensory Garden at the Lighthouse of Broward became the perfect backdrop for listening to beautiful jazz music, tasting wine, watching cigar rolling demonstrations and shopping among dozens of irresistible silent auction items. The first Jazz in the Garden concert featured Federico Britos-Ruiz, a Grammy-award-winning Jazz violinist with his quartet, while guests enjoyed a beautiful Spring evening. Artist Luzmaria Palacios created a beautiful commemorative poster that was available for sale at the event.
Community Foundation of BrowardGrant Helps Kids
A $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Broward will provide up to 40 school-age children, from infants to 12 years old, special low vision evaluations as well as any special equipment required, such as glasses or magnifiers.
Jim Moran Foundation Supports Seniors
Thanks to a $75,000 grant from The Jim Moran Foundation to the Vital Living Program, Broward County seniors who are blind or visually impaired no longer need to become shut-ins. The grant provides life skills training to adults, age 65 and older, allowing them to live independently and enjoy normal activities in their communities.

Dr. Elly du Pré, executive director of the Lighthouse of Broward, was named an honoree for the Dania Lions Club/Lions Clubs International Medal of Merit Awards.
