Year after year, the availability of a skilled workforce continues to be the primary reason for companies to expand, locate and relocate their businesses. Communities that understand the need for a better educated workforce are more likely to create success for their economy and will experience growth and prosperity. The goal seems obvious, but results can be difficult to achieve.

Historically, education and workforce development programs and initiatives have been supply-based systems that receive little input from employer customers. The result: people with skills that do not match the demands of employers. In other words, a skills shortage. In Kentucky, the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (KY FAME) strives to not only provide career opportunities for people but also change the way education is delivered.

KY FAME is an industry-led, public-private partnership consisting of manufacturers, education providers and government leaders whose goal is to create a pipeline of highly skilled workers for all levels of the employment spectrum. Imagine these stakeholders sitting together to discuss the present and future skill needs of manufacturing. Within K12 education, schools partner with employers to develop manufacturing pathways for students to achieve college and career readiness. Post-secondary educators developing academic programs to meet the demand, manufacturers employing students while they are in school, providing them with relevant job experience to match their education and then providing full-time career opportunities upon graduation. At the same time, government aligning workforce resources to ensure sustainability. This is KY FAME.

Creating this productive and collaborative atmosphere requires a few core elements. First, manufacturers provide leadership. They must sit down with other companies (sometimes competitors) and educators to discuss workforce planning and the specific skillsets of future need. Additionally, employers open their doors to the community. They provide relevant co-op style job opportunities, promote manufacturing to secondary education students and open their doors for facility tours and hiring events. Second, government must align resources. Workforce development is no longer only a social service. Workforce systems should co-invest with the private sector to connect resources and individuals to quality career opportunities. Third, education must change how they deliver programs and how they work with employers. Employers are a customer of education. Employer input is essential to developing and delivering curriculum. In KY FAME, all academic programing is designed around four key components:

• Technical Skills

• Personal Behaviors

• Manufacturing Core Exercises

• Job Experience

With KY FAME these are not imaginary concepts but reality. KY FAME provides an atmosphere where educators know what skillsets are needed, and gives employers confidence that people with the skills they need will be provided, while allowing individuals an opportunity for a career and education without mounds of student debt. This is the future of education and with KY FAME the future is now.

The History of KY FAME

In 2008, Toyota, the Kentucky Association of

Manufacturers (KAM) and Bluegrass Community

and Technical College (BCTC) began

discussing a new employer-driven Advanced

Manufacturing Technician (AMT) education

program. They envisioned an academic

program combining the technical skills of AMT

with the support of on-the-job training and

college courses. Through these conversations,

other employers with the same vision became

involved in early 2009 and formed a

group called the Bluegrass Manufacturing

Development Collaborative (B-MDC). Founding

members of this group included 3M, Florida Tile,

GR Spring and Stamping, I.B. Moore Company,

Link Belt, SealingLife Inc. and Toyota.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky sponsored the first AMT

class at Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) in

August of 2010. This class consisted of 22 students from across the

Commonwealth. When this class graduated in 2012, Central Motor

Wheel of America, 3M and GR Spring & Stamping joined Toyota in

sponsoring students. The program proved to be successful. These

graduates were unlike any other. They had an impressive array of

technical knowledge and skills, with leadership and professional skills

to boot. One hundred percent of this first group of graduates stayed

on with their sponsoring employer, and some pursued additional

education. As the B-MDC continued to grow, the name “KY FAME”,

or Federation of Advanced Manufacturing Education, was adopted

in 2013. “FAME” was easily recognized as a powerful name in the

Advanced Manufacturing Career Pathways effort.

In January of 2015, KY FAME was incorporated as a non-profit,

statewide organization. This was accompanied by the formation of

the Bluegrass, Greater Louisville, Lincoln Trail and Northern Kentucky

Chapters. Throughout 2015, chapters formed across the state, and by

year ’s end, the Cumberlands, Greater Owensboro, Southcentral and

West Kentucky chapters were established.

As of the 2015 fall semester, whether under the original piloted

program or what is now recognized as KY FAME, this partnership has

produced 48 graduates. There are eight chapters with over 125

member companies, 56 of whom sponsor 147 current AMT students

from across Kentucky.

KY FAME Pathway

Career AMT graduates are in a great position to leverage career options. With over 1,800 hours already accumulated in on-the-job training and work experience, and the Industrial Maintenance Technology degree in hand, one option for graduates is to continue working full time with their sponsoring employer. These are employers that students have developed strong relationships with and who students know are truly invested in them.

To date, nearly 100 percent of AMT graduates continue to work for their sponsoring employer, and there are reasons for that. Because the AMT program focuses on the development of the entire student, graduates are well rounded and ready to hit the ground running in a manufacturing career.

• This program produces a multi-skilled individual. In technical skills alone, the AMT curriculum allows the student to work in the areas of electricity, fluid power, motor controls, maintenance of industrial equipment, PLCs, welding, machining, drawings, robotics and system troubleshooting.

• Any employer will tell you that technical skills are not all that are needed to have a successful career. The AMT model puts an emphasis on personal behaviors like attendance, communication, diligence, interpersonal relations, initiative and teamwork.

• AMT also teaches students manufacturing culture through core exercises. Safety culture, workplace organization, lean manufacturing, machinery maintenance and reliability and problem solving are all built into the curriculum.

To assist in student preparation, each KCTCS location provides AMT coordinators to connect students, employers, and educators. Coordinators interact with all parties on a daily basis to ensure program standards are achieved and delivered at a high level.

“After graduation from high school, I thought that I wanted the typical college experience. As it turns out, I was just another face in the crowd. In this program I’m learning one-on-one, real-life applications and using the knowledge that I’ve acquired out in the field today. ” - Megan Gant, AMT Program graduate and a permanent Toyota skilled team member

KY FAME GIVES OPTIONS

FOR YOUR FUTURE.

Students participating in KY FAME choose a path providing multiple career options. It begins with the Industrial Maintenance Technology degree.* Upon completion of this Associate’s degree, students have further options. For those ready to continue developing their craft, they can continue full-time employment. For others wishing to continue their education, the AMT program can provide a transition into a Bachelor ’s program for business or engineering. As FAME grows throughout Kentucky, additional Bachelor ’s programs will be developed around the Commonwealth.

Business After receiving their Associate’s degree, many students choose to further their education and pursue a Bachelor ’s and Master ’s degree, either right away or after working a few years. One path to achieve this goal is the Advanced Manufacturing Business program (AMB), through Northwood University. AMB is a work-study program designed specifically for AMT graduates and features Project Management, Situational Leadership and Quality Control Qualification training. The 70 to 80 credit hours that were earned for the Associate’s degree are all transferrable toward this Bachelor ’s and Master ’s program. Northwood maintains an office in Georgetown and courses are available on-line.

AMB offers students a unique opportunity to complete a curriculum of business courses that actually include automotive and manufacturing learning opportunities. It enhances skills already learned and gives the student a new perspective on business and manufacturing management. Ten AMT graduates are currently enrolled in the AMB program.

“The thing about the program that makes a difference to me is the hands-on experience- being able to learn something in class and then being able to go to work the next day and have hands-on practice with what you learned.” - Christina Partin, KY FAME Graduate, the honor graduate of her class and a permanent Toyota skilled team member

Engineering Another exciting option for graduates is to work toward a Bachelor ’s degree in engineering with the University of Kentucky. Students graduating with an AMT before entering into UK’s Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME) program have a definite advantage. AMT students have a strong understanding of technical disciplines, and will have a broad knowledge as an engineer. AMT graduates also have experience working with their hands because of their job experience. AMTs have actually seen the ideas of an engineer come full circle by working and troubleshooting on a real production floor. The combination of the two programs is what creates potentially the most sought out, well-qualified and well-paid new engineers on the market. One AMT graduate, Jeramy Gillis, is currently enrolled in the UK AME program.

“I will graduate with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering, and I will have no debt. I go to school with students that, they’re in engineering school, and they’re getting just as good an education as me, but they do not have the opportunities that I have. None of this would be possible without KY FAME as far as the job experience. Debt free, but job experience is the thing that is going to be written down on a resume that you are going to hand to a company that others don’t have.” – Jeramy Gillis, KY FAME Graduate, University of Kentucky engineering student

* At KCTCS, the KY FAME AMT program is a track in the Industrial

Maintenance Technology (IMT) associate degree program.
