Board MembersYear after year, the availability of a skilled workforce continues to be the primary reason why companies expand and locate their businesses where they do. Communities that understand the needs for a better educated workforce are more likely to create success for their economy and will experience growth and prosperity. The goal seems obvious but results are difficult to achieve.

In 2008, Toyota, the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers (KAM) and Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) began collaboratively discussing solutions to these workforce concerns. This partnership started to develop a new employer driven Advance Manufacturing Technician (AMT) education program. They envisioned an academic program combining the technical skills of AMT with the support of on-the-job training and college courses.

Through these conversations, other employers with the same vision became involved in early 2009 and formed a group called the Bluegrass Manufacturing Development Collaborative (B-MDC). As the B-MDC continued to grow, the name of “KY FAME”, or Federation of Advanced Manufacturing Education, was adopted in 2013. KY FAME established itself as an industry-led public-private partnership consisting of manufacturers, education providers and government leaders whose goal is to create a pipeline of highly skilled

workers for all levels of the employment spectrum. From its inception “FAME” was recognized as a powerful name in the Advanced Manufacturing Career Pathways effort.

In January of 2015, KY FAME was incorporated as a non-profit, statewide organization. This was accompanied by the formation of the Bluegrass, Greater Louisville, Lincoln Trail and Northern Kentucky chapters. Throughout 2015, chapters formed across the state, and by years end, the Cumberlands, Greater Owensboro, Southcentral and West Kentucky chapters were established. As of the 2016 fall semester, this partnership has produced 87 graduates. To date, KY FAME’s nine regional chapters include 210 company members. Of those members, 103 are currently sponsoring 334 students who attend fourteen Kentucky postsecondary education institutions.

While Kentucky’s economy continues to grow, KY FAME continues to create solutions to ensure Kentucky’s current and future manufacturing workforce is ready for the jobs of the future.

May 5, 2005 Toyota proposes a new vision and process to the Kentucky Community & Technical College System for technical and workplace education that will produce higher outcomes and graduates who are more work ready, and proposes Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) as the pilot site.

2006Toyota and BCTC open the new “Advanced Manufacturing Center” campus, an open area emulation of a manufacturing operation. The campus is located at Toyota and the first campus director is a “loaned executive” from Toyota to assist with aligning the curriculum and activity as closely to customer need as possible. The first classes on the new campus begin.

2008 Toyota and the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers begin discussing the employer collaborative aspect of the new vision and convene the first meetings of interested companies and organizations.

2005-2008 2009-2013 2014-2015

History & Highlights• A part of a $220,000 partnership with Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow (LIFT), KY FAME will launch a

multi-chapter teacher externship program at all nine FAME chapters. Externships will provide business partners and teams of teachers an opportunity to learn how technical and academic course content is used in a real-world manufacturing environment.

• The 4th Annual National AMT Conference will be hosted by Northern KY FAME on May 16-17. The AMT conference brings together company, student, government and education AMT partners to share best practices and strategies on AMT implementation.

• The 2nd Annual KY FAME Summit will also be held in Northern Kentucky on May 15.

• Beginning in the Spring 2017 Semester students enrolled in AMT and other FAME endorsed programs are eligible for the Work Ready Scholarship. The Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship helps Kentuckians who have not yet earned an associate’s degree afford an industry-recognized certificate or credential. Scholarships are for students earning an industry-recognized certificate, credential, or diploma in one of Kentucky’s top five high-demand workforce sectors – health care, advanced manufacturing, transportation/logistics, business services/information technology, and construction/trades. More information is available by clicking here.

6

2016

Lightweight Innovation for Tomorrow (LIFT) named KY FAME a national Education and Workforce

“Game Changer” at its annual meeting in September.

In November, Fortune.com and Time.com referred to the AMT program as a national “Model for the

Future” in career and technical education.

The National Network of Business and Industry Associates identified AMT and KY FAME as a

21st Century Work-and-Learn Model in its 2016 Successful Strategies for Employers guidebook.

January In January, many companies in the Northern KY FAME chapter along with other company partners launched the Enhanced Operator Certificate at Gateway Community & Technical College. The Enhanced Operator trains up to 30 individuals in a one-semester entry-level manufacturing operator certificate.

March The Northeast Kentucky Chapter is formed.

Also, on March 22, KY FAME hosted the first annual KY FAME Summit. In sum, 100+ KY FAME partners met to share best practices on student recruitment, company engagement, new program development, student mentoring, and many other topics. Also

May In May, 39 AMT students graduated from Bluegrass Community & Technical College.

July At the NASCAR Xfinity ALSCO 300 at Kentucky Motor Speedway, KY FAME sponsored Xfinity driver Garrett Smithly’s “Number Zero” Chevrolet Camaro. Smithly and FAME partners also provided media interviews and participated in a meet-and-greet with fans during the race weekend.

Garrett continues to advocate for the KY FAME program with students.

Also in July, Governor Bevin announced the Work Ready Skills Initiative, which provided $100 million to improve Kentucky’s secondary and post-secondary STEM education infrastructure. The Initiative’s goal is to create and improve academic programs that match job market demands. Of the 24 projects approved, six directly relate to KY FAME chapters and total over $28 million in funding.

• Bluegrass/BCTC – Danville Campus: $2.7 million Advanced Manufacturing Center renovations

• Cumberlands/SCC: $3.8 million Advanced Manufacturing Center renovations

• Greater Louisville/JCTC: $15.2 million Advanced Manufacturing Center construction

• Greater Owensboro/OCTC: $2.8 million Advanced Manufacturing Center renovations

• West KY/WKCTC: $3.04 million Advanced Manufacturing Center renovations

• Southcentral KY/SKYCTC: $179,000 for AMT equipment upgrades

August In August, 103 companies from nine KY FAME chapters began sponsorships for 226 students.

Fall 2016 In the Fall 2016 semester the Greater Owensboro FAME chapter launched the Computerized Manufacturing and Machining (CMM) program. CMM is modeled after AMT and the first cohort consists of 9 sponsored students.

End of 2016 Bluegrass Community and Technical College completed construction at the new Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC) in Georgetown. The AMC design mirrors a manufacturing production facility. While containing classrooms, administrative offices, and computer labs, the bulk of the 78,000 square feet is a flexible high bay space. The design follows the principal that students should learn in an environment similar to one where they will apply their skills after graduation. Classes at the AMC began in January 2017 and it hosts the AMT program as well as many other manufacturing related programs.

7

FAME PathwaysThere is no doubt that students participating in KY FAME choose a path providing multiple career options. The Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) degree is only the beginning. Upon completion of this associate’s degree, students have options. For those ready to continue developing their craft, they can continue full-time employment. For others wishing to continue their education, the AMT program can provide a transition into a bachelor’s program for business or engineering. As FAME grows throughout Kentucky, additional bachelor’s programs will be developed around the Commonwealth.

AMT graduates are in a great position to leverage career options. With over 1,800 hours already accumulated in on-the-job training and work experience, and the Industrial Maintenance Technology degree in hand, one option for graduates is to continue working full time with their sponsoring employer. These are employers that students have developed strong relationships with and who students know are truly invested in them.

To date, nearly 100 percent of AMT graduates continue to work for their sponsoring employer, and there are reasons for that. Because the AMT program focuses on the development of the entire student, graduates are well rounded and ready to hit the ground running in a manufacturing career.

This program produces a multi-skilled individual. In technical skills alone, the AMT curriculum allows the student to work in the areas of electricity, fluid power, motor controls, maintenance of industrial equipment, PLCs, welding, machining, drawings, robotics and system troubleshooting.

Any employer will tell you that technical skills are not all that are needed to have a successful career. The AMT model puts an emphasis on personal behaviors like attendance,

communication, diligence, interpersonal relations, initiative and teamwork.

AMT also teaches students manufacturing culture through core exercises. Safety culture, workplace organization, lean manufacturing, machinery maintenance and reliability and problem solving are all built into the curriculum.

To assist in student preparation, each KCTCS location provides AMT coordinators to connect students, employers, and educators. Coordinators interact with all parties on a daily basis to ensure program standards are achieved and delivered at a high level.

In addition to AMT, KY FAME chapters are currently exploring new programs designed in the AMT model. The Greater Owensboro chapter currently pilots a Computerized Manufacturing and Machining (CMM) program. Many Northern KY chapter members helped design the enhanced operator certificate for entry-level production and discussions are underway for future programs including Tool and Die.

Career

8

After receiving their Associate’s degree, many students choose to further their education and pursue a Bachelor’s degree, either right away or after working a few years. One path to achieve this goal is the Advanced Manufacturing Business program (AMB), through Northwood University. AMB was designed specifically for AMT graduates and features Project Management, Situational Leadership and Quality Control Qualification training. The 70 to 80 credit hours that were earned for the Associate’s degree are all transferrable toward this Bachelor’s program. Northwood maintains an office in Georgetown and courses are available on-line.

AMB offers students a unique opportunity to complete a curriculum of business courses that actually include automotive and manufacturing learning opportunities. It enhances skills already learned and gives the student a new perspective on business and manufacturing management. Ten AMT graduates are currently enrolled in the AMB program.

“The thing about the program that makes a difference to me is the hands-on experience- being able to learn something in class and then being able to go to work the next day and have hands-on practice with what you learned.” - Christina Partin, KY FAME Graduate, the honor graduate of her class and a permanent Toyota skilled team member

Another exciting option for graduates is to work toward a Bachelor’s degree in engineering with the University of Kentucky. Students graduating with an AMT before entering into UK’s Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME) program have a definite advantage. AMT students have a strong understanding of technical disciplines, and will have a broad knowledge as an engineer. AMT graduates also have experience working with their hands because of their job experience. AMTs have actually seen the ideas of an engineer come full circle by working and troubleshooting on a real production floor. The combination of the two programs is what creates potentially the most sought out, well-qualified and well-paid new engineers on the market. One AMT graduate, Jeramy Gillis, is currently enrolled in the UK AME program.

“I will graduate with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering, and I will have no debt. I go to school with students that, they’re in engineering school, and they’re getting just as good an education as me, but they do not have the opportunities that I have. None of this would be possible without KY FAME as far as the job experience. Debt free, but job experience is the thing that is going to be written down on a resume that you are going to hand to a company that others don’t have.” – Jeramy Gillis, KY FAME Graduate, University of Kentucky engineering student
