Academic programs offered by AIPH
Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH)
Started in 2014 MSPH is a two year Master’s degree in Public Health completed in four
semesters. The program started in 2014 and has inducted 4 batches and enrolled 143 students.
Two batches have completed their course work. Students who have completed their course work
and thesis are working with national health programs and NGO’s. Few graduates have joined
AIPH as faculty.
Faculty of the program includes 3 PhD holders and 3 Fellows of College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Pakistan. In the last three years, AIPH has built partnerships with international
organizations and NGO’s including International Committee of Red Cross, JHPEIGO, HELP,
HANDS, PPHI and is collaborating with them in multiple projects. The faculty of the Institution
has won two major research grants from UNICEF and ICRC and the projects are undergoing.
The Faculty has published 15 articles in Pub med Indexed national and International Journals in
the last 3 years.
Certificate in Medical Education (CMEd)
CMEd is a one year certification in medical education completed in two semesters. The program
started in 2015 and has inducted 2 batches and enrolled around 50 students. The certificate
Course will be upgraded to a two year Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE) in 2018.
The program has the services of distinguished specialists in the field of medical education
including 3 PhD Holders and 4 faculty member having Masters in Health Profession Education.
The program has organized several workshops for faculty of different medical colleges in
Karachi to build their capacity in modern principles of medical education.
Certificate in Emergency Medical Technicians Program (EMT)
EMT is a one year certification in emergency medical care. The program started in 2015 and has
inducted 2 batches and enrolled around 180 students out of whom 27 have completed their
course work. The program aimed to fill the void of trained staff in essential emergency care
skills in health system and has built partnership with emergency care Institutions like AMAN
Foundation, PPHI, EDHI Foundation and JPMC for the training of the candidates. The Program
has the services of distinguished faculty of JSMU and its partners. Certificate holders of the
program have been employed in reputable institutions like Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto
trauma center, Civil Hospital Karachi and Emergency department of Pakistan Navy Hospital.
New Proposal for Training (PFT) to Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Youth Development Program
(BBSYDP) for EMT Batch – III (2018-2019) has already been drafted.
Residency Program for FCPS Training
Residency Program for Community Medicine was approved in June 2017 by the College of
Physician and Surgeon Pakistan (CPSP). Five trainees will be hired during 2018.
Research Courses offered by AIPH
Research Module for second year MBBS
The ongoing mandatory Research Module course is being conducted for 2nd
year MBBS students
by AIPH with the support of Research Department, JSMU. The course, which started in January
2017, is of 4 credit hours and comprises of 3 semesters. First semester has already been
conducted with students making their synopsis in groups. Students will be able to get the
certificate at the successful completion of their 4th
year.
Research elective for JSMU students
A Research Elective course was offered to all students of JSMU and other medical schools
between 3rd
and 15th
July and 16th
to 30th
October 2017. A total of 25 students were enrolled in
each batch. The course aimed to improve the research skills and competence amongst medical
students by strengthening their theoretical knowledge. It provided a great opportunity for hands-
on training on data entry and basic analysis using SPSS. The major learning outcomes of this
course were assessed through end of course exam and final presentation of research protocol was
developed by each course participant.
Foundation Research Course for Basic Medical Science Institute (BMSI) JPMC students
AIPH collaborated with BMSI, JPMC in 2016-17 to offer a foundation research course to their
M.Phil students. It was taught to 2 batches and in total 54 candidates were enrolled in the course.
The students were awarded certificate upon successful completion of the course.
MSPH Admissions 2017
For the academic session 2017-2018, new admissions were announced in July and entrance test
and interviews were conducted in August 2017. The program curriculum was modified as per
HEC guidelines. Out of 100 applicants, a total of 48 students were inducted in the program via
entrance test.
Orientation Session MSPH Batch IV 2017
The Orientation session for the fourth batch of MSPH 2017 of APPNA Institute of Public Health
(JSMU) was held on August 22nd
2017. The session was hosted by Dr. Shiraz Shaikh and was
attended by a total of 30 students. Prof. Dr. Lubna Baig gave a welcome speech to the students
where she congratulated them on being a part of AIPH by successfully completing the
comprehensive assessment process and committed that AIPH will facilitate them in accessing
resources that can help them achieve academic excellence and professional success. Introduction
of faculty was then given by Dr. Nighat.
Registrar JSMU Dr. Irfan Ashraf discussed the importance of examination in the development
and functioning of the institutes. Introduction about MSPH Program was then given by Dr.
Shiraz Shaikh and Ms. Naushaba Khatoon shared code of conduct and facilities available at
AIPH. The two graduates of first batch of MSPH who are now working as lectures at AIPH
shared their experience as students and talked about the conducive learning environment
provided in the University.
Principal JSMU Dr. Sarwar Qureshi congratulated the students and offered the institute’s support
to help in the academic growth of the students. Facility visit was conducted by Mr. Salman Zaidi
which was followed by serving refreshments to the students and respected guests.

Outdoor academic activities, MSPH program
Field Visit Report- PPHI District Office Thatta
A field visit was arranged as an assignment for MSPH batch II semester IV students under the
course of Health Management and Leadership on Thursday 27th
April 2017. Three organizations
DoH, PPHI Sindh and MERF in district Thatta were assigned to students in 3 groups. As per
assignment, Group 2 visited PPHI District Office Thatta and met Dr. Hassan Memon, District
Manager PPHI.
The students learned about the BHU Plus Services provided by PPHI which included 24/7
Labour Room, Ultrasound, 24/7 Availability of Female Medical Staff, Labs, Ambulance, Free
Medicine, Newborn Care and Postpartum Family Planning. They also became aware of the
communication and monitoring strategies of PPHI.
According to District Manager PPHI Thatta, PPHI Sindh is covering almost 60% of health
facilities, majority of which are BHUs and dispensaries. At present PPHI Sindh manages 1139
primary healthcare facilities through funding provided by Government of Sindh. PPHI works
towards improving health care in the area of maternal, newborn and child health. Apart from
MNCH, organization also provide services in the area of general OPD, eye clinic, dental clinic,
emergency services, vaccines against snake and dog bite etc.
Field Visit Report – Aman Foundation
On November 25, 2017, a field assignment was arranged for the students of MSPH batch 3. The
visit was arranged in 4 different facilities of Aman Foundation. They visited youth friendly
spaces, community projects, Aman Health Clinic and MNCH/Family Planning facilities of the
Aman Health. Students learned about impacts of different program, integration with existing
program, the public private partnerships and their basis.
Certificate distribution ceremony of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) Course:
The convocation of the first batch of EMT took place in March 2017. The program was started to
serve the noble cause of saving lives in periods of disasters and emergencies. Prof. Dr. Tariq Rafi
was the chief guest of the ceremony. Dr. Zeb Dahar from Peoples Primary Healthcare Initiative
(PPHI), Mr. Khaqan Sikander from Aman Foundation and Dr. Noor Muhammad Shujra from
Sindh Medical Faculty (SMF) also attended the ceremony. BBSYDP collaborated with AIPH for
the noble cause by sponsoring the EMT batch. The university’s tuition fee, administrative fees
and the stipend for students were covered by BBSYDP. Some financial support was also
provided by Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRC).

Training Achievements
AIPH conducted 74 training workshops during last three years in Baby breath, First Aids,
Gynecology and Obstetrics and Qualitative Research. Since May 2016, AIPH organized 14
trainings in collaboration with different partners like Jhpiego (Sukh and MCHIP), HANDS and
UNFPA.
De-escalation of Violence training:
A session was conducted regarding the Media campaign ‘give way to the ambulance’ at IBA
City campus to share the observation done on Ambulance and causes of violence, with the
students of IBA.
Team Health Care in Danger (HCID) started training on De escalation of violence on health care
providers and its safer access. The HCID team trained 4 groups of EMTs and EVOs at Aman and
also conducted training at Patel Hospital in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
Dr Ibrahim Hashmi and Dr Sana Tanzil conducted workshop in UMDC on 3rd
March on De
escalation of violence on health care Providers. In the workshop, Dr Nelson Olim was invited as
a guest. He is a Senior Surgeon, Assistance Division Health Unit at ICRC - Geneva with field
experience in wound ballistics, war surgery, mass casualty management, the quality of surgical
care in austere environments, technology and health care in armed conflicts. He shared his
presentation on facing challenges on war surgeries. The conference was attended by Dr
Bonaventure (senior surgeon ICRC), Mr. Mir Waiz (HCID, ICRC-Peshawar) and Mr. Maciej
Polkwoski (Head of HCID project, Islamabad).

AIPH in collaboration with UNFPA conducted two trainings on PCPNC in the year 2017. These
trainings were funded by UNFPA whereas AIPH was responsible for the overall planning,
organization and implementation. The participants of the training were skilled birth attendants
from FATA including Doctors, LHVs and Nurses. Dr. Nighat Shah was the lead trainer in both
trainings. Clinical Training was conducted at JPMC gynea ward 9 and was attended by a total of
22 participants.
The aim of the 6 days PCPNC training was to provide evidence-based recommendations to the
participants in the management of women during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and post
abortion. In addition to the quality class room and clinical teaching they were also provided with
the hard copy of manuals and other reference material. The training was a rich learning
experience for the participants.

Helping Baby Breath (HBB) Training Workshop
A training workshop on Helping Baby Breath (HBB) was organized at APPNA Institute of
Public Health by MBS (fourth year) students. The training was conducted on July 29th 2017 by
Dr. Marial Shoab (MD) and assisted by Syed Uzair Mahmood, Ms. Aisha Jamal and Syed Ahsan
Uddin. More than 35 MBBS (2nd and 3rd students) were trained during the session.
Conferences/Seminars
Association for Excellence in Medical Education (AEME) Conference:
International Conference of association for Excellence in Medical Education (AEME) was held
from 3rd
to 5th
March 2017 in collaboration of JSMU and Aga Khan University (AKU). AIPH
actively participated and its faculty members played a major role in all the committees including
scientific, workshop, abstract review, hospitality, publicity and security committees. AIPH
hosted pre-conference workshops with a large number of attendees. Dr. Lubna Baig shared her
expertise as a speaker and moderated the sessions during this conference. Dr. Nighat Shah, Dr.
Shiraz Sheikh, Dr. Sana Tanzil and Dr. Ibrahim conducted the pre-conference workshops. Also,
Dr. Nighat Shah, Dr. Shiraz Sheikh and Dr. Mariam gave oral presentations during the
conference. A ceremony was held after the conference where certificate distribution took place
and the entire AIPH faculty was appreciated for their enthusiastic participation in the conference.
Ramdhan Conference
Second International Ramdhan Health Conference was held on 8-10 September 2017 at JSMU.
Ms. Naushaba Khatoon, Dr. Sobia Memon, Mr. Salman Zaidi and Mr. Zeeshan Ahmed Butto
from AIPH were part of the organization committee.
Regional Symposium in Manila
Regional Symposium to explore the convergence between International Humanitarian Law,
Humanitarian Principles, Religious Norms and Customary Practices in association of South East
Asian Nations (ASEAN) to address Humanitarian and Protection Challenges in South East Asia
was held in Manila, Philippines on 2-3 October 2017.
Prof. Lubna Baig was a key note speaker at that conference and talked about: Preventing
Violence against Health Care: Operationalization of Research Based Strategies by AIPH, Jinnah
Sindh medical University in Karachi. The session was appreciated and attracted a lot of attention.
Fourth Global form for Human Resources for Health by World Health Organization
November 13-17 2017.
Prof. Lubna Baig was invited to the forum on health care in danger and presented a paper on:
Preventing Violence against Health Care: Evidence based Strategies that worked in Karachi. She
discussed the role of universities in developing awareness regarding health care in danger.
AEME Regional Conference 2017, “Curricular innovations for better health care” Shaheed
Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University, December 4-5, 2017, Larkana- Pakistan
The conference was jointly organized by JSMU, SMBBU and AEME in Larkana.
Prof. Lubna Baig, Dr. Nighat Shah, Dr. Syed Moyn Ali and Prof. Nusrat Shah were the key note
speakers from JSMU. Dr. Rahat Naz conducted a workshop and presented papers at the AEME
Regional Conference held at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University on 3-4
December, 2017. Prof. Janet Grant from UK, Dr. Syeda Kauser Ali and Prof. Umar Ali Khan
were other key note speakers from Pakistan.
Awareness Sessions
Awareness and management of Hepatitis B and C Project:
During 2017, AIPH held few awareness raising seminars such as seminar on "World
Contraceptive Day", ”Pink Ribbon day" and "Population explosion".
The APPNA Institute of Public Health (AIPH) in collaboration with The Health Foundation
(THF) is conducting multiple activities to combat the menace of hepatitis B and C illness in its
various stages.
Total of four awareness seminars and behavior change sessions were conducted for the pharmacy
students and staff of JSMU. These sessions were conducted as part of community empowerment
strategies so that the student’s perception towards this very preventable disease may change and
they can not only adopt measures to protect themselves from acquiring this disease, but also are
empowered to safe others.
In the future stages, vaccination against hepatitis B is planned. A total of three doses in the
specified time regime will be provided to both the students and staff. This will be a free of cost
activity, subject to availability of requisite logistics which will be arranged by THF.
The Annual World Contraception Day – September 2017
The Annual World Contraception Day was celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm on 26th
September at JSMU. A half day Seminar was organized by JSMU and Society of Gynecologists
and Obstetricians of Pakistan (SOGP) on ‘Building Partnerships for improving Family Planning
in Pakistan’, which saw many clinicians, public health specialists, midwives, nurses,
undergraduate students and postgraduate students and residents in attendance. It was also
attended by numerous other stakeholders from Population Welfare Department (PWD), Family
Planning Association of Pakistan (FPAP), Marie Stopes Society (MSS), Peoples Primary Health
Initiative (PPHI), World Health Organization (WHO), Midwifery Association of Pakistan
(MAP), and Costed Implementation Plan (CIP) Sindh. Jhpiego and Save the children were the
main sponsors for the event. The program was moderated by Dr. Nighat Shah, Assistant
Professor from AIPH, JSMU.
Honorable Minister, Mir Mumtaz Hussain Jakhrani, from PWD graced the occasion and stressed
the need for Family Planning amongst masses. He pledged an oath from everyone in attendance
on promoting good health of a woman and imparting knowledge of Family planning in their
domain as much as possible. Keynote Speaker, Dr. Azra Fazal Peechu, MNA and Chairperson,
Oversight Committee, FP2020 also voiced her opinion on the importance on Mother’s health and
Family Planning services in Pakistan. Various other well-renowned speakers, from related fields,
also expressed their valuable opinion on the occasion. The eminent speakers included Madam
Mehtab Rashdi from FPAP, Dr. Nusrat Shah from JSMU, Dr. Riaz Memon from PPHI, Dr. Farid
Midhet from Jhpiego, Dr. Xahar Gul from Marie Stopes society, Prof Razia Korejo from SOGP,
Dr. Badar Munir from WHO, Dr. Aisha Fatima from Save the Children, Madam Mussarat Rani
from Midwivery Association of Pakistan, Dr. Azmat Waseem from PWD and Dr. Talib Lashari
from CIP.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Tariq Rafi, Vice Chancellor, JSMU on this important occasion applauded
the efforts of the team members who took part in organizing such an important seminar and
endorsed the views expressed by all the well acclaimed speakers. He further stressed the need of
such awareness seminars on all levels. This was followed by Shield and Ajrak Distribution
Ceremony, where all the speakers, organizers and dignitaries present at the event were awarded
for their valuable contribution for spreading the important message of Improving Family
Planning services.
Breast Cancer Awareness Program – October 2017
To raise awareness regarding breast cancer by social progress, educated and empowered patients
a breast cancer awareness program was organized at JSMU on 20th
October 2017. Pink balloons,
pink flags, pink ribbons, 3 fold pictorial pamphlets, panaflexes, multimedia and display of a
healthy diet plate was used to create awareness regarding breast cancer and its preventive
measurements.
Additionally, an activity of body mass index (BMI) charting was arranged and free clinical
examination by expert doctors was provided to the participants. In addition to the visual and
written information regarding breast cancer awareness, counseling was also done for better
understanding of the behavior changes to prevent breast cancer. To create awareness regarding
the prevention and cure of breast cancer, media was approached and celebrities were involved to
start different initiatives. A helpline service was also initiated to create awareness and knowledge
of breast cancer and remove any possible misconception regarding it and also to empower people
to help them make informed choices regarding their health.
Achievements of MSPH graduates
Two MSPH students, Dr. Zaeema Ahmer and Mehjabeen Musharraf who were also
working as lecturers at AIPH, successfully completed their dissertation.
One of those students, Dr. Zaeema Ahmer received a gold medal for being the best
student in her batch.
Conferences, Seminars and Workshops attended by AIPH Faculty
Dr. Lubna Baig was the key note speaker at the 5th International Conference on Health
Professions Education and Research at Khyber Medical University on 7-9 April, 2017.
Dr. Lubna Baig was the key note speaker at the International Medical Education
Conference on “Health Professions Education Institutions and their Social
Responsibilities” at University of Health Sciences Lahore on 26 - 28 October, 2017.
Dr. Sana presented a scientific paper titled "Exploring Opportunities to Strengthen
Supportive Supervision of EPI services in Sindh" at the 8th Annual Public Health
Conference in Health Services Academy, Islamabad.
Dr. Shiraz presented the findings of HCID Project in the Annual Public Health
Conference of 2017. The oral presentation on Security assessment of a public and private
tertiary care hospital in Karachi won the second best prize.
Dr. Shiraz also presented the findings of HCID Project in the Annual International
Meeting of HCID Project in Geneva.
Dr. Meha was invited as speaker and chair of the mini symposium at 6th
Mediterranean
Neuroscience conference in June, 2017.
Dr. Nighat was invited as speaker at AEME – First International Regional Conference
2017, Larkana in December 2017. She also presented her paper at the conference.
Dr. Nighat facilitated trainings on Pregnancy child birth post-partum and newborn care
(PCPNC) of FATA skilled birth attendants at AIPH skills lab.
Dr. Greesh attended E-learning sessions on student teacher communication.
Faculty Achievements
Dr. Shiraz developed an evaluation plan for assessing the effectiveness of a national
media campaign on ‘give way to the ambulance’ in 5 large cities of Pakistan. Data
collectors for the evaluation were trained in Peshawar, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad
and Karachi.
Dr. Shiraz developed a research proposal to conduct a survey in 3 provinces of Pakistan
on Violence against Healthcare Workers and secured funding for the project in 2018 by
HCDP of ICRC.
Dr. Sana submitted a research proposal to Health Services Academy and UNICEF titled
as "Implementation of Research to Address Priority Immunization Issues."
Dr. Meha Fatima, a lecturer at APPNA Institute of Public Health was awarded her Ph.D.
Degree this year. Her thesis was endorsed and signed by Mohsin-e-Pakistan, Dr. Abdul
Qadeer Khan to whom she has dedicated her thesis. Moreover, this year Dr. Meha got her
work published with a total impact factor of 12. Her research was one of the most
downloaded researchers in Journal of Chemical Neuroanatomy.
Dr. Meha also introduced mental health as a credit hour course for the first time in
Pakistan. It will be part of MSPH program and also serve as a stand-alone course for
those participating from other institutions. AIPH has signed MoU with ICP to conduct
this course and promote mental health in Pakistan.
Ms. Naushaba Khatoon submitted a proposal on "Integrating Gender in Higher
Education" to Association of Common Wealth Universities (ACU). Proposal application
was selected and grant for training workshop was approved.

Annual picnic
Annual summer picnic for faculty, MSPH batch 2 and 3 was organized on May 24th
2017 at
Dream world, Gulshan-e-Maymar. Final year MBBS students also joined the event.
Last day of MSPH Batch 2 after final exam
Batch -2 celebrated their last day at AIPH after final exam on in May 2017.
Farewells – Saying Goodbye!
Farewell to Maciej Polkowski, Project director ICRC was given in October 2017.
AIPH organized a farewell party for a faculty member Dr. Marium Somroo on 13 Sep 2017.
Farewell was given by MSPH batch 3 students and faculty to batch 2 upon completion of the
course work. It was organized on 3rd November 2017. Students and faculty were given titles
which were followed by an auspicious dinner.
The ‘Gold Medal’ Treat
Dr. Zaeema was awarded MSPH best student Gold Medal award. She celebrated it by
treating her AIPH colleagues on 19th Sep 2017.
