I am grateful to Lotus Petal for helping me reach

where I am today. It is a dream come true for me and

my mother. It seemed so difficult and far away but

today I have a job and a life that I had never imagined.

Words fall short to share how I feel and what my

school has done for me and for many children who

come from the same background as me.

Now I am pursuing my higher education while

working and I am also determined to support Lotus

Petal in every possible way.

Our teachers and administrative staff gave us hope

and courage- I am thankful to them and to all the

donors and corporates who provide for our

education through regular contributions. Would

request more support to Lotus Petal so we may

expand our school and more children can get what I

received and that too from a much younger age.

Page 5: ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18 - Lotus Petal Foundation

2017 has been another year of progress for your foundation as the enrollment of students crossed 400.

Our first batch of students who had started in a single room school 5 years ago completed their fast track

program and entered mainstream society with jobs, college admissions and most importantly skills to

navigate their own life.

During the year we have expanded our infrastructure with 12 more classrooms and a modern kitchen;

hiring staff members and strengthening system solutions for cost efficiency and sustainability. There has

been significant time invested by the leadership in connecting the work of every employee in your

foundation to the vision of transforming through education. The year had amazing stories of change not

only for the students but also for employees and donors.

Friends of Lotus Petal had its beginning in the US, UK and Australia with many of you taking initiatives to

spread the word, raise funds and shared your skills to support the work of your foundation. It is important

to appreciate how valuable each of this has been in creating a brighter future of the underprivileged

children in your foundation.

The humble beginning of Lotus Petal to where we are today would not have been

possible without your help. Lotus Petal extends a sincere “thank you “ to all its

staff members, corporate donors, friends, individual donors, volunteers and

implementation partners who make all of this happen. You truly are making a

difference. In the local community your foundation has given hope to the

dreams of many underprivileged parents for their children to have a better life.

Many more wish to be part of this which was seen in the over 1000 applications

received for admissions in the new academic session. Only 140 students secured

admissions due to resource limitations yet all of them deserved a chance. The

existing campus will reach its maximum capacity of 600 in the next session and

thereafter will remain at that level.

We have experienced over the years, the goodness that exists in the world. In our global environment,

there are so many people who are eager to help support the education of children less privileged. This was

once again reinforced when we received a land grant of 5 acres from one our donors. This has given us the

inspiration to build a new campus which can provide access to quality education, healthcare and skilling

to more than 2000 children.

Lotus Petal Foundation will strive to bring people together by providing opportunities to people around

the school and across the globe to extend their support so that this new campus is built, and more

children can transform their lives through education. Education is the most powerful tool to transform the

world. Being part of our journey in any capacity is your contribution towards in making it possible.

Inspired to serve. One world. One Community.

With the support of Fidelity India`s , Project Udaan, the Pratisthan Learning Center was able to take students

through a robust academic year, inter woven with skilling programs and communication classes. We had a batch

successfully appear for their Government board exams of Grade 10 that gave us an astounding 100% result. All our

students of 10+ 2 are undergoing rigorous skilling programs besides their classroom academics. The students

from the first batch of Lotus Petal completed 10+2 and entered mainstream society with jobs, college admissions

and most importantly skills to navigate on their own for a better life.

The sustenance provided by Project Udaan enabled us to enrol more students in the year 2017-18 taking the total

strength of Pratishthan Learning Center to 196. The student teacher ratio is 1:9 and 21 teachers take care of all the

children in Pratishthan,

Fidelity`s support extended beyond sponsoring education, to make room for the growing capacity of Lotus Petal

we were also provided with the support to construct three new classrooms for our children along with a power

back up for uninterrupted studies especially in the science and computer labs.

At Fidelity International, we seek to support charitable causes with the aim of

improving the lives of others and building better futures for those in our immediate

communities. Lotus Petal's commitment to provide education and vocational

training to children from under-served communities so they can lead a life of dignity

is the very commitment to society that we look to uphold. Through Project Udaan,

Fidelity International is proud to be associated with Lotus Petal, and together, we are

providing many children a chance to a better future.

Umki is leaving no stone unturned to reach closer to her

dream each day. She represented the school in the

Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and confidently worked her

way up on the stage to pick up the award under the

Youth Care Category. Her participation in the weekly

communication classes and various theater activities

gave Umki the flamboyance that her victory deserved.

It is not easy to get time and space for your studies,

when you are living in a rented room with limited power

supply, along with your four siblings and parents. After

school, Umki baby sits her niece until 08:30 pm so her

older sister can earn a living as a house-maid. But this

does not tire her any more since her spirit is high. Each

day brings her closer to the life that she is crafting for

herself. The day is spent immersed in learning around

people who value her. Books and sports. The walk back

home is filled with thoughts of hope that envisage a life

of dignity ahead.

UMKI DAS

Umki Das is a determined and disciplined 14-year old girl from Silokhra village in Gurgaon. Umki did her primary

level schooling from various NGO schools, and then was admitted in a secondary school where every supply was

charged for. Umki is the third girl child out of four and there was no way her family could spend money for her

education. On the verge of drop out, her landlord suggested the Pratishthan Program of Lotus Petal Foundation

to Umki`s parents.

Umki joined Lotus Petal Foundation in 2016 and felt liberated with the opportunities and possibilities that lay

ahead. Her education and meals were free. But the high point for her was when she discovered the focus of her

school in fitness and nutrition. Umki always wanted to pursue a career in sports and aspires to be a boxer.

Pratishthan kindled hope for her. “Earlier, my health and diet was very poor due to poverty, but now, my health

is better because of the tips given by my fitness teacher and the healthy and delicious food provided by the

school. Now, I feel like I can easily knock down two-three boys at a time.”

Umki feels appreciated and valued in her school. The recognition to her sporting talent has further invoked the

eagerness to be more involved in her academics. The counsellors have worked with her to clean scars of growing

up in a gloomy environment. Her mind is rested, body fit and nourishment is adequate. Umki casually puts it,

“Now, I feel progress in my reading and learning skills. It has now become possible for me to understand,

what words express, and it is all because of my teachers' creative approach towards learning. I don`t feel

discouraged with how things are at home. The support I receive from my teachers gives me strength.”

Page 12: ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18 - Lotus Petal Foundation

The unflinching support of IFCI Foundation and the generosity of

various individual donors helped us to enhance the classroom

experience for all the children of Vidyananda School. This was the

first year that all the children received text books, note books,

stationery, uniform and all school supplies from the first day of their

academic session. The school strength has gone from 136 to 229.

The student teacher ratio remains at a healthy 1:15 - 16 teachers take

care of our little children in Vidyananda School.

The constant support and generosity of ASED & Cargill fulfilled our

dream to begin the schooling of Vidyanada students from Nursery.

We proudly announce that this is the first year where Vidyananda

School started both a new nursery and a new section in

kindergarten.

The benevolence of ASED and Cargill was extended in helping us

construct 12 new classrooms, all equipped with dual desks, black

boards, display boards and furniture for the teacher. The students

have been elated with the new, well ventilated learning

environment.

10

ASED aims to provide underprivileged children and adolescents throughout the world access to quality education and skill training. Our goal is to contribute

to the improvement of their lives and provide them with the opportunity of becoming actors of

the harmonious and sustainable development of their society.

We are proud to partner with the Lotus Petal Foundation. Their professionalism, their holistic

and integrated approach, their unwavering commitment towards the children of the slums of

Gurugram are changing the lives of the communities they work with. Good luck and best

wishes for Lotus Petal's further growth.

The opportunity to join hands with Lotus Petal has enabled us to achieve that.

Our association is based on mutual trust and commitment to the underprivileged children

who have entrusted the most important years of their lives to us.

We are very pleased with the efforts by the entire team of Lotus Petal to execute the

academics, extra curricular and beyond in an exemplary way for the child.

All of 11, Shakila Shaikh of Grade IV joined Lotus Petal at the age of 4 in Kindergarten. She had

never been to a school before. Daughter of a gardener and a house maid, Shakila has three other

siblings besides her. Going to school everyday was an unheard activity in her family.

Initially Shakila struggled with the academics, primarily with adjusting in an environment very

different from the slums. Her academic performance deteriorated, and she had to repeat a class.

With the support of her teachers and the guided by the counsellors, Shakila took this set back

positively. This incident motivated her to put in extra hours to her studies. Her parents sought for

counselling and worked diligently with their child. The teachers explained how repeating a class

would benefit her and the support that she received only strengthened her foundation.

Shakila believes in hard work. “Coming to school every day is exciting for me” says the shy

girl. She knows that away from the streets and a life of neglect, her school is the only welcoming

place where she can showcase her talent confidently. Over the years Shakila has become good in

art and craft, sketching and loves to spend time in the school library. Her grade in English, Science

and Computers aggregate to over 80%.

A very diligent and sincere girl, Shakila loves everything around her to be neat and tidy. She

started as a shy little girl but has blossomed into a confident young lady who loves to

communicate in English. Her eager participation in various extra-curricular activities, theater and

school assembly gives her ample opportunity to gain confidence.

Full of gratitude for the experience she is receiving through her school, Shakila wishes to be a

doctor to make her parents proud and her school famous. She revels in the joy of assisting her

teachers while they work and her most joyous moments are the one`s that bring a smile on her

parents face when she scores well in her school exams.

A beautiful, talented girl who is focused on

overcoming her hardships to reach towards the

life of abundance and opportunity.

AARYOGYA WELLNESSAarogya wellness is the healthcare program of Lotus Petal Foundation. Under

Aarogya, children are served freshly cooked breakfast & lunch daily. The school has a

weekly OPD where the students benefit by the presence of an in-house doctor. The

health and nutrition is further more supported by a fitness program and access to

counsellors for mental health well-being.

With the support of IFBN we were able to serve 1,12,200 meals in the

year 2017-18 to all our children. The meal planning was further

deepened after studying the blood test results of the children in

August 2017. The focus was on improving the BMI, haemoglobin

besides the height and weight. The trend of medical challenges being

addressed in the weekly OPD was an indicator of the kind of food our

children should be served.

A carefully crafted menu was executed through out the year using the

seasons best vegetables, grains, beans, pulses and limited spices.

Weekly paneer and soya protein were added to give children the

added benefits of nutrition. Organic milk was fortified with protein

and DHA supplements. Our systems were enhanced to measure the

daily kcal and protein intake of a child. The judicious monitoring of all

the above gave hearty results. Over 76% of our children showed

improved BMI and 61% improved Haemoglobin.

“It is heartening to see smaller lines in the weekly OPD. Fewer children are falling

sick, not many complain of indigestion or weakness as opposed to earlier times.

The health index of the students has also improved considerably. This is only

possible if you get fresh food at regular intervals. It`s helping our children build

immunity and strong health and a good foundation for their future. We can

creatively and scientifically add more focused nutrition to the children now that is

most promising”

geeta devi & nandiniGeeta Devi, age 34, is an assistant cook at Lotus Petal Foundation.

Geeta hails from a small village Mahisur in Bihar where sending a

girl to school was a taboo. Her childhood memories are only those

of learning how to cook, clean and manage the cow shed. She was

married at the age of 14 and had her first child even before she

turned 17. Her husband works odd jobs as a carpenter in the slums.

Geeta uses her thumb impression to sign for herself. She cannot

read nor write, and the thought of economic independence was far

from reach. Mother of three children, all of who study in Lotus Petal

Foundation, Geeta would frequent the school for parent teacher

meetings. A job opening in the kitchen at the school intrigued her

and after few rounds of interviews and back ground check, she was

offered the job of an assistant cook. “Never in my life had I

imagined that I will be able to earn some money. Because of my

job I have my own bank account and get medical benefits for

myself and my family” beams Geeta.

Lotus Petal has been an over arching umbrella for her and her

family. Now with two members of the family earning, they can rent

a better room with a toilet and bath. The schooling for the children

is also free.

Geeta Devi is supported by three other ladies in the kitchen to cook

for everyone in the school. Their children are also a part of the

schools run by Lotus Petal.

The fresh food cooked everyday by these ladies with love and

care also has a big impact on the growth of the school children.

One such example of improvement is that of Geeta`s daughter

Nandini, who is in grade IV of Vidyananda School.

In the last one year Nandini has grown 5 cm (from 139 cm to 144

cm), her weight has gradually increased by 7.6kg (from 31.5 kg

to 39.6 kg) Now she`s a healthy girl, exhibiting a BMI of 19.09, a

sharp rise from 16.32 in the previous year.

“We take great care to add adequate proteins and nutrients in

the everyday meals so that the growing child can benefit. This

kind of nutrition also builds immunity and helps the child be

regular in the class”says Dr. Nandita Chakraborty.

Nandini, enjoys the paneer, rajma and chole with rice in school.

She loves the chocolate and vanilla milk in the morning. A

vivacious teenager, Nandini is always eager to participate in

sports and fitness activities in the school and performs on stage.

Most importantly, Nandini loves her school and strives hard to

never miss a day of class.

The breakfast & lunch is cooked in a state of the art, modern, industrial style

kitchen in Lotus Petal. The all brick, tile and stainless kitchen is safe and more

hygienic. The FSSAI certification supports the licensing of the work done.

AARYOGYA WELLNESS

Committed to serving the best to our children yet keeping the cost of operations down, Lotus Petal

geared up for the approaching new session of 2018. There was going to be a 50% rise in school

strength. With the support of gracious corporate and individual donors, we were able to gather

courage to design a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen. The construction of the kitchen

expansion was supported entirely by ASED. The use of brick, tiles and steel made for the safest

cooking environment.

The spacious kitchen was equipped by brat pans, stoves, burners and racks by Mr. Ashwinder Raj

Singh in the memory of his parents. The additional requirement of the kitchen equipment was

plentifully taken by United Way of Delhi. The ordeals of the ladies rolling over 1500 roti`s in a day

was ended by Mr. Nishith Gupta`s donation of the roti maker. Now roti`s of 30 kilo atta (flour) are

made in just 45 minutes. The machine to knead 10kg dough in 7 minutes was donated by Fidelity

India. All these changes have enabled the children to eat together and enjoy recess time and has

also made lunch hour shorter, making room for two extra learning periods each day.

We are thankful to United Way Delhi, IFBN, Cargill, ASED, Mehru,

Ashwinder Raj Singh, Nishith Gupta & Fidelity India to set the nutritional foundation of

Lotus Petal. You have sown the seeds of good health for years to come. “ “Saloni Bhardwaj

IFBN with the support of its corporate partners like Times Foundation and Alvean Sugar has been providing the

daily meals to over 400 children at Lotus Petal Foundation for the last two years 2016-17 and 2017-18. The

program is taking care of “classroom hunger” and has improved overall health and nutrition status of the children.

It also has an impact on aspects like punctuality, attendance and concentration of the children as well as

community cooperation. Lotus Petal Foundation has further enhanced the efficacy of the program by upgrading

the school kitchen with commercial kitchen appliances which ensure better quality and safety in the preparation

of school meals.

IFBN under its second operating model of channeling surplus packaged food also connected tasty and nutritious

drinks MILO and TANG to the Lotus Petal Foundation School which was also served to the children

On behalf of the India Food Banking Network, I would like to acknowledge the excellent work being done by Lotus

Our partnership with United Way helped us weave together several things within our

programs that helped us strengthen systems, take security measures to protect the child,

build storage and infrastructure within the school campus, establish an independent

counselling wing, equipped with all patented learning tests & career counselling units.

United Way went beyond tangible investments and assisted in certain teacher salaries too.

Such act of faith is very valuable in building a young organization like Lotus Petal.

Thank you NTT Data, for most thoughtful gifts to our children, active

participation in events and also for 'sponsoring students' in Vidyananda School.

There are thousands of organizations in the space of imparting

education across India. However amongst this sea of catalysts,

Lotus Petal Foundation stands out clearly as a “center of

excellence”. Two factors are instantly visible when you visit Lotus

Petal schools and other initiatives: firstly, the vision and passion

of the founders (Saloni and Kushal) is infectious and their drive

towards quality is clear. Secondly, the ability of the founders to

drive and institutionalize joyful learning for children of under-

served communities can be seen across all initiatives. United

Way is happy to partner with Lotus Petal Foundation in their

pursuit of enabling quality education for thousands of children.

May the Tribe Increase!

“NTT DATA Services has partnered with Lotus Petal Foundation

since 2016 to support the annual primary education of 60 children.

NTT DATA Services’volunteers regularly visit the Foundation’s

school and engage in different activities including serving meals,

interacting with students and teachers and watching

performances. In 2017, as part of our annual Global Volunteer

Week program, we also partnered with the Foundation to arrange

a gift for each child. It’s great to see first-hand the positive impact

the Foundation is making on these children’s lives through

education, nutrition, healthcare and skill development. NTT DATA

donations to Lotus Petal is

deeply appreciated.

Ever grateful for the long withstanding 'sponsor a child' commitment of

Concentrix over the years to Lotus Petal. We truly appreciate the most

consistent weekend volunteering by the Voice & Accent trainers from

Concentrix to take up communication classes for the students of

Pratishthan besides the organizations financial support.

Concentrix is proudly associated with Lotus Petal Foundation since

2015. Their programs around education & wellness, strong governance,

compliance and integrity is their USP. They are an extremely committed

and passionate group of people who work relentlessly and tirelessly in

making a difference in the lives of the vulnerable sections of the society. It

is not only how professionally they do what they do, but also the

compassion and dedication they bring to the table is commendable.

Concentrix is extremely glad to be partnered with the organization in all its

activities and wish them great in future endeavours.

We thank all the donors, each individual & every organization for entrusting us with your kind and generous

donations, without these Lotus Petal would just be a dream, few words and some scribbles in a journal. You are

playing a very significant part in holding all the ground work together. You are nourishing each person that

eventually takes care of the child.

Grateful for all the volunteers who take work off our hands and who infuse the children with freshness and give

them a peek to the outside world. Your presence adds another dimension to education in Lotus Petal and builds

confidence amongst our children.

Thank you to all the teachers- your patient and tireless efforts in being with the child and their parents; while

coaching and mentoring, in setting standards and in fanning that curiosity, in teaching how to wash hands, flush

toilets and comb hair- Your work and dedication fascinates us and many who humbly watch you do this

effortlessly. We are most blessed to have the most unique administrative wing. Your commitment towards

working way beyond your work hours, uncomplainingly answering parent queries, filling admission forms for the

ones who use a thumb, accompanying students for admissions & interviews and most meticulously managing

donations & inventories to keep the cost of operations low, for keeping the campus clean and most importantly

for being there so attentively that the child can have the best day at school. Thank you!

We would like to acknowledge and thank all the parents of our children, you may not be able to read this, but it is

our collective desire that your child may read this to you. We all thank you for entrusting the future of your child

with us. We cannot thank you enough for the faith that you have in our work and cooperation you shoulder with

us- in our demands of sending your child to school every day, our expectations of their presentable turn out, clean

uniforms and our constant requirements of wanting to see you during PTMS. We know that this hard for you, but

we know that you are learning too. We wish that you are drawn to Lotus Petal not because of poverty or lack but

because of hope and courage. On behalf of all the staff & donors of Lotus Petal we honour your commitment.

We promise to keep our focus on the child and continue honest work with precision in keeping what we have

today flourishing. Thank you for Being Lotus Petal.
