Chairman’sReportTheSocietyhashadachallengingyear2016/17andtheNationalManagementCommitteewasrequiredtospendconsiderabletimeexaminingcarefullythemanagementandstructureofourbusinessoperationaswellasconsideringatitsAnnualPlanningDayhowweshoulduseour40thanniversaryin2020.Theannualconferencewasahighpoint.ItsCanberra-centricthemeTheScientistintheGardenwashighlyengagingandagreatsuccess.Theprogramofspeakersandthegardenvisitsservedtoremindusoftheentwinednatureofscienceandgardening,especiallyinthedevelopmentofournationalcapitalsinceitsestablishmentlastcentury.Theconferencealsoreflectedtheneedforustobevigilantinsustainingourculturallandscapestodaythroughadvocacy.ThereweremanyhighpointsintheconferencebutthedinnerspeechdeliveredbyMarionHalliganprovedaninspiredchoiceforherevocationofsuburbangardeninganditsbountifulrewardsinCanberracirca1960.InthesecondhalfoftheyearourNationalExecutiveOfficerresigned.PhoebeLaGerche-WijsmanhadservedtheSocietyforfiveyearsandbroughttheorganisationmorefullyintothedigitalera.Herefficientandeffectivemanagementofthenationalofficewasgreatlyappreciated,aswasherworkondevelopingpartnershipswithempatheticorganisationsthatservedtoincreasetheSociety’sreputationandinfluence.WhenItookuptheroleofChairmantwoyearsagoitwaswiththeassuranceofPhoebe’scapabilitiesasanadministratorandherastuteawarenessofthemembership’ssensitivities.Oursearchforasuitablereplacementandtheinterregnumsinceherdeparturehasrevealedourgoodfortuneinhavinghadthebenefitofherservice.

Itwasunfortunatethatourplansforthe2017conferencetotakeplaceinHamilton,NewZealand,hadtobepostponedwithtrans-Tasmanplanre-scheduledfor2019.However;theVictorianBranchsteppedintothebreachandagreedtohostthe2017conferencebasedinMelbourne,forwhichwearemostgrateful.GOVERNANCE:FINANCEANDMANAGEMENTFinanceandInvestmentsOurfinancialpositioncontinuestobesound,butmembershiprecruitmentandretentionarestillimportant,andsotheNationalManagementCommittee(NMC)isencouragingbranchestoembracetheactionsoutlinedintheMarketingStrategytocontinuetoincreaseourmembershipnumbers.TheNMChasestablishedanEndowmentFundtosecurethefutureoftheSocietyandduringtheyeartheFinanceSub-Committeetenderedadviceonhowthismoneyshouldbeinvestedtoimprovereturnsatanacceptablelevelofrisk.TheSocietyisgratefultotheCommittee,includingJohnDwyer,AlanReadandTomHogg,fortheirsupport.InsuranceandRiskManagementTheNMCisresponsibleforensuringthereareadequatepoliciesinrelationtooverseeingandmanagingriskandprovidingadequatepublicliabilityandvoluntaryworkersinsurance.Therewerenoalterationstothesepoliciesthisyear.NationalManagementCommittee(NMC)TheNMCmetface-to-faceonthreeoccasions,inCanberra,MelbourneandSydney,andheldthreetelephonemeetings.InadditiontoitsregularmeetingstheNMCheldaPlanningDayinMelbourneinlateFebruary2017.SubCommitteesandWorkingGroupsAsthenewlyelectedmembersoftheNationalManagementCommittee,BronwynBlakeandStuartReadjoinedanumberofsubcommittees.AdvocacySubcommitteeMegProbyn(Convener),StuartReadandCarmelO’HalloranEditorialAdvisoryCommitteeRoslynBurge(Convener),RuthMorgan,ColleenMorris,JulieCollins,PatsyVizents,FelicityWatsonandRayChoateEngagementWorkingGroupJessicaHood(Convener),BronwynBlake,RuthMorgan,RichardAitken,ChristinaDyson,GeorginaPoncedeLeonandNationalExecutiveOfficer(NEO)FinanceAdvisoryCommitteeElizabethTeed,JohnDwyer,TomHoggandAlanReidKindredSpiritsFundCommitteeRayChoate,ElizabethTeed,JohnDwyerandColleenMorrisOralHistoryandArchivesWorkingGroupRoslynBurge(Convener),JohnMaurerRecordingGardensWorkingGroup

1708 1772 1837Thenumberofmembershasdroppedoverthelasttwelvemonths.Althoughwehavegainedmanynewmembers,manyofourexistingmembershipareageingandresigningfromtheSociety.WebsiteTheSociety’swebsitewasrelaunchedwitharedevelopedsitedesignedtobefareasiertousethanthepreviousversions.TheSociety’ssocialmediapresence,underthemanagementoftheNationalExecutiveOfficerandtheMembershipandMarketingassistanthasexcelled,withpeopleacrossthecountryandtheglobe‘following’and‘liking’us.Iencourageyoualltoengagewiththesesites,aswellasthewebsitetokeepabreastofoureventsandnewsitems.VolunteerLachlanGarlandhascontinuedinassistingtheNationalExecutiveOfficerinmaintainingthewebsite.WeareverygratefultoLachlanforhisexpertiseandcommitmenttotheimprovementandmaintenanceofthewebsite.

PROJECTS:Gardens+Environment,OralHistory,RecordingGardens,PublishingAndGrantsPUBLISHINGANDGRANTSPlantingDreams:ShapingAustralianGardensDuetothelargegrantasPrincipalSponsor(of$25,000)totheStateLibraryofNSWinJune2015,nootherprojectsweresupportedin2016-17.Gardens+EnvironmentEditorDrRuthMorganhasworkedsteadilyoverthelast12monthsseekingco-publishingsupportfromavarietyoforganisations.FundsfromtheNinaCroneFundhavebeensetasidetoassistinthefuturepublication.KindredSpiritsFundThisfundwasestablishedin1999withtheproceedsfromthegenerousbequestofthelateJoanLaw-SmithofherbookKindredSpiritsandhasbeengenerouslysupportedbyanumberofourmembers.MoneyintheKindredSpiritsFundisinvestedwiththeMyerFamilyCompanyandatermdeposit.OnlytheincomeoftheFundisspent,therebypreservingthecapital.In2015/16thefollowingpublicationswerefunded

ORALHISTORYTheNorthernNewSouthWalessub-BranchranaverysuccessfulOralHistoryWorkshopinArmidalein2017.TheenthusiasticsubcommitteeofRoslynBurgeandJohnMaurerhasseenStagetwooftheAGHSOralHistoryprojectbeembracedbytheBranches.Branches/ConferencesBranchesTheworkofthebranchesiscentrallyimportanttoensuringgardensandculturallandscapesacrossAustraliaarestudied,conservedandprotected.Detailsofbranchfunctions,advocacyandprojectsfollowthisreportandareatestamenttothebreadthofactivitiesthattheAGHSparticipatesinacrossAustralia.Thisyearhasseenanincreaseinthequalityandassuch,theattendanceofBranchevents.ManyBrancheshaveembracednewideasforBrancheventsandarestartingtoseetheirBranchesreinvigoratedbytheenergyandenthusiasmfromnewmemberstotheSociety.Branchnewslettersareanimportantcomponentinmaintainingmemberinterestinlocalissuesandactivitiesatabranchlevel.Branchesaretobecommendedonthehighstandardofthesenewsletters,whichareavailableviathewebsite.OnceagaintheBrancheshaveexcelledthemselvesinthelastyearwitharichandvariedprogramofevents;fromself-drivetourstoworkingbees,monthlylectureprogramstoanacademicsymposiumandaNationalConference.

PROJECTSPlantingMemories–ANZACCentenaryLocalGrantOurBranchwassuccessfulinobtaininganANZACCentenaryLocalGrantin2015.OnThursday16October2016,ontheeveoftheAGHSNationalConference,threestainlesssteelpanelsdesignedbyMarianaRollgejserandplacedoppositetheEnglishGardenclosetotheYarralumlaNursery,wereunveiledbyGaiBrodtmannMP.GeoffPage’spoemTheForester,whichhonourstheyoungmenfromtheCanberraregionwhofoughtinWorldWar1,isinscribedononeofthepanels.ThankstoNancyClarke,AnnaHoweandMarieWoodfornegotiatingthemanyavenuestoseetheprojectrealised.CHAIR'SREPORTThepasttwelvemonthshavebeenmostmemorableandextremelybusy.TheannualAGHSConferenceheldinCanberraexceededallexpectationswithamoststimulatingspeakers’programandoutstandinggardenvisits.TheConferenceCommitteeconvenedbyMargieBourkeistobecongratulatedforthediligenceandexpertiseappliedtomakingtheConferenceasuccess.MythanksgotoacreativeanddedicatedBranchCommitteeforagainprovidingourmembershipwithadiverseprogramofeventsandtalks.Theplanning,organisingandreportingoffunctionsismuchappreciated.IwouldliketoaddsincerethankstothethreememberswhoretiredfromtheCommitteeduringtheyear.MargieBourke,AnnaHoweandLainieLawsonbroughtspecialskillsandenthusiasticenergynotonlytotheConferencebutalsotoourBranchprojects.Theircontributionistrulyvalued.Atthe2017BranchAGMHelenElliot,ourextremelyprofessionaltreasurer,completedhernine-yeartermofofficeontheCommittee(fiveofthemastreasurer).OurBranchhasbeenmostfortunatetohavehadaccesstoHelen’sknowledgeanddiligencenotonlyforBranchactivitiesbutparticularlyfortheintricateaccountingproceduresfortheConference.TheCommitteeandBranchmembershipsincerelythankHelenforhercommitmenttotheSociety.

PROJECTSGardenRestoration–aGardenRestorationGrantof$4000($2000fromtheSABranch+$2000fromtheNationalOffice)hasbeenapprovedtoassistlong-termAGHSmembersDrIanandMrsJanieSmyliewiththerestorationofthecirca1880sgazebolocatedintheirgardenat‘Wensleydale’,Stirling.TheeditoroftheAGHSjournalhasalreadyrequestedajournalarticleontherestoration,whichisbeingresearchedandwrittenbymemberSandraKearney.GardenRecording–TheSAbranchhasundertakentorecordthegardenat‘TheCedars’,thefamilyhomeofartistSirHansHeysen.‘TheCedars’isnowownedandmanagedbytheHansHeysenFoundationandtheSAAGHScommitteehavenegotiatedourinvolvementwiththisiconicSAandnationaltreasure.Theinitialstageoftherecording,asurveyofthegardenboundaries,thebuildingsandhardlandscapingfeaturesisnearingcompletion.ThesurveyisbeingdonebytheStirlingsurveyingcompanyOldenandvanSenden,whoaresupportingtheAGHSinitiativebyasignificantfeereduction.AGHSOralHistoryProject–InSAwehaveawealthofgardeningknowledge,experience,historyandstoriesthathaveyettoberecorded.RevivalofthisprojectinSAhasbeenflaggedforactioninthenearfuture.SACHAIRPERSON’SREPORTIwishtothankSAbranchcommitteefortheirassistanceandsupportduringmyfirstyearasChairpersonandthestatemembershipfortheirparticipationinBranchactivities.TheSAbranchmembershipremainssteadyinnumber(with90–100members).ThebranchhascontinuedtofunctionbroadlyinsupportofthemissionoftheAustralianGardenHistorySociety–topromoteawarenessandconservationofsignificantgardensandculturallandscapesthroughengagement,research,advocacyandactivities.Thethemeforthisyearwas'GardeningintheDriestState',withsomeofourvisitsandpresentationsrelatedinsomewaytohowgardeners/gardenspast,presentandfuturehavecoped/willcopewithSA’stoughclimate.Thebranchhascirculatedfivenewslettersin2016–17,withRayChoateaseditorassistedbyElizabethGanguly.ThecurrenteditorialteamisPamelaMayer,ElizabethDobsonandPamelaTonkinanda‘cuttingedge’newlooknewslettercalledPOLLenandDiRTiscurrentlyinproduction.AndrewPlumerournewtreasurerhasbeenextremelybusyrevisingthebranchaccountsandbringingallourbankingonline.Thishasmadeitaloteasiertopayaccounts–nomorechasingaroundgettingtwosignaturesonchequesorhavingtomakeatriptothebanktodepositcheques.TheSAbranchisnowusingonlinebookingviaTryBookingforanyeventsthatinvolveafinancialoutlay.Thiswillmeanthatmembersandguestsarerequiredtomakeapaymentatthetimeofbookingaticketfortheevent.TheuseofonlineeventbookingbringsSAinlinewithotherstatebranchesandbyprovidingmemberswithacommitteephonecontactanyproblemsareeasilysolved.CongratulationstoDrJulieTolleyonthepublicationofherarticle‘AnnJacob’sBarossagarden’intheOctober2016issueoftheAustralianGardenHistoryjournal.

PeninsulaandJindivick.WewereverypleasedtowelcomeseventravellersfromotherAGHSbranches.ADVOCACYAletterwaswrittentoWingecarribeeShireCouncilexpressingconcernoverthefutureofanavenueofQuercuspalustrisandarowofheritagecamellias,whicharethreatenedwithremovalduetotheplannedupgradeofStationStreet,Bowral.ThepinoaksformtheentryintoBowral,andthecamelliasformauniquecollectionthatrepresentsanimportantpartofthegardenhistoryoftheSouthernHighlands.AplanhasjustbeenreceivedbyWingecarribeeShireCouncilandcommunityconsultationshouldsoontakeplace.Submissionsmadeto:

WingecarribeeShireCouncilobjectingtotheproposedsitingofadditionalvillasbeingbuiltonanadjoiningpropertytoMiltonParkEstate.ThesewouldhaveinterferedwiththevisualconnectionbetweeniconicpartsoftheMiltonParkgardenanditsruralvistas,whichareadistinctcharacteristicoftheEstate.Councilrejectedthevillasinquestion.WingecarribeeShireCouncilobjectingtoatouristdevelopmentinSuttonForest,duetotheformandappearancebeingunsympatheticto,andintrusivein,theSuttonForestculturallandscape.Theproposalwaswithdrawn.NSWDepartmentofPlanningandEnvironmentretheHumeCoalProjectEIS,requestingtheprojectberefusedduetounacceptablerisktothegroundwatertableandthelandscapeofSuttonForest.

thestudiosofartistsTomRobertsandFredMcCubbin(andsawfirsthandthedamagewroughtbysambardeerinthehills.)Franhasalsocontinuedtocheerfullyorganiseourworkingbees,assistingownersandmarshallingthevolunteersforthismostimportantroleoftheAGHS.Itisalwayswonderfultohearhersayinherreport:‘Allthetaskswesaidwewoulddoweredone.’OurChristmasfunctionatBlackburnwasasplendidaffairlookingatlandscape,historyandarchitectureandthenfurthercomplementedbyamemberopeningherprivateRobinBoyddesignedhouseandgardenforourpicnic.Ournewslettercontinuestobethemainwaywecommunicatewithmembers,andIthankLindyNeylanforherprofessionalapproachtothistask.Wehaveprovidedastrongvoiceforadvocacyacrossanumberofissues.OnepositiveoutcomeisthereturntotheBallaratBotanicalGardensoftheNorthGardensLodge;however,otherissuesareongoing.WealsohaveavoiceontheNationalTrustLandscapeReferenceGroup.Ourlectureserieshavegivenusmuchfoodforthought,andrangedfromthehistoryofColonialandFederationgardenstocollectorstogardendesigners.ThegardensofWombatParkandMountBoninyongbothfeaturedinthelecturesandareveryfamiliartoourworkingbeeattendees.WelearnedofRobertFortuneandhispartinintroducingcanolaintowesterncultivationaswellashisintroductionfromChinaofsomanyofthetreesandshrubsfeaturingatWombatParkandMountBoninyong.InFebruarytheCommitteetookthefirsttentativestepstocreateaninformalnetworkofsimilarorganisations,invitingrepresentativesfromtheRoyalHistoricalSocietyofVictoria,NationalTrust,DryStoneWallersamongstotherstojoinusforaconversation.TheninMarch,theVictorianBranchCommitteealsoacceptedatveryshortnoticethechallengeofhostingthe38thAnnualConference,andtheplanningfor‘MarvellousMelbourneinConstantChange’undertheleadershipofLisaTuck,iswellunderway.TheCommitteedeserveseveryaccoladeastheyrisetothischallenge.AGHSVictoriaisfortunatetohaveadedicatedandtalentedgroup,bothontheCommitteeandacrossthemembership,whoarewillingtomakesurethisisasuccess.Iamquitehumbledbytheircommitment.Thisyear,twoCommitteemembersareretiring:AnnaLong(Treasurer)andLisaTuck(ImmediatePastPresident).Theircontributionshavebeenalmostimmeasurable.AswellastheroleofTreasurer,AnnahasbeeninvolvedinourNewsletter,isacheerypresenceatthedeskforlecturesandhasplayedherpartinorganisingourtrips.Lisahasbeenasourceofassistanceinallareas,particularlyaswedevelopedtheoutlineofthe2017Conference.Herabilitytoknowexactlywhatneedsdoing,thengettingonwithitisinspirational.

• ‘ADayintheHills’wasthethirdfunctiononSaturday8OctoberinthehillsidelocalityofDarlington.ItwasjointlyorganisedbytheWABranch,HeritageRosesandtheDarlingtonHistoricalSociety.The24peoplewhobravedtheinclementweathervisitedtwoprivategardensandattheconclusionheardtalksonthreenurserymanassociatedwithrosesintheareaattheDarlingtonHall.

• Thefirstfunctionfor2017thattooktheformofatalkandawalkatKingsParkonSunday9Aprilwasnotwellattended.ThememberswhowerepresentheardJohnViskadeliveraninformativetalkintheboardroomofthefriendsofKingsPark.ThesubjectwastheuseofAustralianplantsingardenhistoryandfollowingitawalkintheimmediateareagavetheopportunitytoviewtheolderhistoricplantingsofthepark.

• OnSunday7May2017thesecondeventwasheldinKalamundawheremembersmetatStirk’shistoricCottageaftervisitingDenise’sGardeninCarmel.FollowingtheirinspectionmemberswalkedthroughStirkParktoseethegardenaroundHeadinglyHall,anotherpropertyassociatedwiththepioneeringfamily.ViewedalongthewayfromthefencelinewasthegardenofthelateMaryHargreaves,anoriginalbranchmember,theforlornstatestimulatingmuchdiscussiononthemaintenanceofmatureplantings.

ADVOCACYThechairmanandCarolineGrant,theformerchaircontactedtheNationalTrust(WA)toraiseconcernsthatthehighlysignificantorchardofthetrust’spropertyatTheOldFarmStrawberryHillAlbanywasbeingconsideredasaneventsarea.PROJECTSAnapplicationwasreceivedfromtheKalamundaShireapplyingforagranttohelpwiththerestorationofamarbleplaqueonahistoricseatinthetowncentre.BranchmembershaveparticipatedinworkingbeesheldbytheNationalTrustatWoodbridgeandSamsonHouse.OnSundayMarch262017CarmelO’Halloran,RozStewart,TrishEdwardsandSueMongerassistedwiththesociety’sinformationstallattheannualGuildfordHeritageFestival.Theydistributedthesociety’spublicationsandrecordedthenamesofpeopleinterestedinjoiningthesocietyandreceivingournewsletter.Muchcommentandinterestwasgeneratedbythedisplayofoldgardeningtools,terracottapotsandwateringcans.WABRANCHCHAIR’SREPORTDuringtheyearIhavebeeninvitedtoaddresssixcommunitygroupsonaspectsofWA’sgardenhistoryandthishasprovidedanopportunitytosellthebranch’sGuidetoConservingandInterpretingGardensinWesternAustraliaaswellashandoutmembershipbrochures.ThankstoretiringcommitteemembersAllisonVarneyandTomCrossenespeciallyforhisassistanceastreasurerforthe2014NationalConference.

Treasurer’sReport ThisyeartheaccountsoftheSocietyshowafavourablesurplusof$54,354.Significantincomeaccountshavebeensubscriptions$93,000,theCanberraConference$82,400,andInterestof$16,300.TheconferenceinCanberrawasenjoyableandafinancialsuccessandourthanksgotoMargieBourke,SueByrne,HelenElliot,KayJohnston,GregJohnson,NancyClarke,JudyPearce,SueTuisk,MarieWoodforalltheirhardworkandresultingsurplus.TrishaDixonorganisedpre-andpost-conferencetoursthatdelightedmemberswhotravelledwithher.Althoughthisyear’sincomewassmall,theSocietyappreciatestheeffortsTrishamakesonitsbehalf.Indeed,theNationalManagementCommitteevaluestheworkdonebyallthevolunteerswhomanagetheconferenceandtours.

TheoperationalcostsoftheSocietyare$204,000annually.Subscriptionscontributelessthanhalfthisamount.Thejournalwasproducedfor$71,000.$6000expenseswereincurredontheNewZealandconferencebeforeitwasdecideditwasnotviabletoproceedin2017.TheredesignofthewebsitenowshowstheNationalbodyrepresentedbyavisuallystimulatinganduser-friendlysite,costingapproximately$7000.$5000wasallocatedtothedevelopmentofarevisedandelectronicversionofaCourseGuideonRecordingYourGardenbywriterEliotCooper.TheWesternAustralianBranchwasassistedbymatchingtheircontributionof$5000forrestorationworkinQueen’sPark,Albany.$9000allowedtheSocietytobecomeprincipal sponsor of The Planthunter’s HERITAGE issue in May 2017. Four stories relevant to AGHS were featured.Thispromotiongavethesocietyexposuretonewandwideraudiencesandlinkswithsocialmedia. Branchesundertookotherprojectsforapproximately$46,000.DetailsofthesearegivenintheBranchReports.TheKindredSpiritsFundhasabalanceof$206,000.Thefundhassupportedthefollowingpublications:
