Commitment

In our society, the increasing levels of inequality start at birth in socially disadvantaged groups.

Once again, this year Tomillo Foundation has worked at creating new opportunities to offer a better life in a fairer and more equal society for children and young people.

The extent to which these children can make use of the educational opportunities offered to them is essentially conditioned by the economic and cultural status of their families.

Hence, bringing the same opportunities to all children and concluding that “if they don’t make the most out of it, that’s their responsibility” is not enough. In order to guarantee that they can actually make the most out of these opportunities -and this report shows many examples of opportunities for young people-, support and supplementary measures to reduce inequality are needed.

Being enrolled in school is not enough if your social environment doesn’t encourage you to complete compulsory secondary education, nor to pursue further education. Being given the opportunity to do an internship or a volunteer program abroad is not enough; you need a good educator conducting you and helping you understand how that opportunity can, indeed, change your life.

During 2016, Tomillo Foundation created new opportunities in order to train skills that will be highly demanded in the future: technological skills, entrepreneurial skills, teamwork, sustainability awareness, active citizenship, self-expression and listening, foreign languages, self-knowledge, emotional management… Thousands of boys, girls and young people have benefited from this opportunity, being now fully conscious of the positive impact that it can have in their future lives.

To all of you who walk this path with us, and let us walk with you thank you.

“Vertical inequality” is the formal term used to describe inequality among children and young people within a given country, or a given

citylike Madrid. Combatting this inequality is one of the objectives included by the United Nations in its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and building of inclusive societies.

Commitment

If I had to pick a single moment to exemplify our work in 2016, I would choose the handing over of diplomas, titles and awards to the students of our programs for school support, professional training and employment. Their nervousness, their happy faces, their excitement -occasionally, even their tears-, and their regained self-confidence, were a big reward to our day-to-day efforts...

We couldn’t have achieved these results without the support of our members, volunteers, donors and private and public funders. These results have a significant social impact thanks to the commitment and dedication of a team of more than 200 professionals who seek a better world, fairer and with real equality of opportunities. We believe in the development of people and communities, and in the transformations that support, mentoring and education can bring.

We are satisfied with the challenges tackled this year and with the progresses we made in improving the lives of the children and young people we work with. Even so, since we know that the social reality is certainly complex, we have adopted innovative approaches towards the new social challenges we are facing, with the aim of conducting more effective actions.

Our main goal, as usual, is to help children and young people to have a better and more dignified life, to ensure that they can have dreams.

And you can join us on our journey. You can become a member of Tomillo, and join this movement for social change and improvement. Join us by becoming a member, a volunteer, a donor, a mentor… Become a “tomillero”!

And for those of you who are already “tomilleros”, thank you for being there! The world is a better place thanks to people like you.

All children have the right to experience success and personal recognition, to be reckoned according to their potential, not to their disadvantages. We seek the common good, paying particular attention to those in need since they have a different way of learning, they don’t fully understand the struggles faced by their parents and they have to make an extra effort to achieve the same results as other children.

Becoming a successful society depends on our capacity to create environments for the protection and development of children. We assist minors and their families so they can achieve their full potential and give shape to their own personal future projects.

In 2016 we carried out several projects focused on the attention to children and their relations with their families, peers, environment, school and themselves, taking into consideration their personalities and their particular circumstances, in order to provide a comprehensive response to their needs.

We keep strengthening the communal tissue of disadvantaged areas (due to social, economic and cultural conditions, etc.). We firmly believe in collaborative solutions put together by different actors: administrations, social entities, business companies, schools and the specific community itself.

We keep walking this path, since we are convinced that all children are capable of learning; it is our challenge to help them create their own future.

One of Tomillo Foundation’s main priorities is to safeguard the rights of vulnerable children. For this reason, in 2016 we actively participated as members in the Community of Madrid Council of Attention to Children and Adolescents and as board members in their Child Abuse working table.

Together with Save the Children, Secretariado Gitano Foundation and Plena Inclusión Foundation, we launched a Manifesto for an education system for everyone, intended to contribute to the Education Agreement with a third sector’s (voluntary sector) view about the need for a fair, fully funded, inclusive and high-quality system that ensures the right to equality in education.

PREVENTION FROM EARLYCHILDHOOD

During the 2016/2017 school year, we abandoned the management of the El Caserío Nursery School. On the other hand, we included the Early Childhood Care Program targeted at young mothers of children under 3 years of age. We provided them with a space for free play and connection in which children can explore and relate and mothers can share and strengthen the experience of raising a child and watching them grow up and develop.

SUPPORT ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Through the Villaverde Integrated Attention Service, we have expanded our work, meeting the educational and social needs of 111 children and adolescents inone of the districts of Madrid with the highest indicators of social exclusion.

1,619CHILDREN RECEIVEDSCHOOL SUPPORT:

of the students improvedtheir personal skills

of the adolescents at socialrisk have continued theirstudies or are working

With the aim of improving the school environments and preventing truancy and early school dropout, we have continued with our integrated interventions with children and adolescents from districts like Usera, Villaverde, San Blas, Carabanchel, Latina and Puente de Vallecas.

Thanks to the CaixaProinfancia Program from Obra Social “La Caixa”, we launched a project combining school support, psychological care, leisure and training in positive parenthood, and 677 children, adolescents and their families have benefited from this initiative. This program helped us find additional sources of support for children nutrition, hygiene, school material, glasses and hearing aid devices for the children and families we work with. This comprehensive support has had a notable impact in the family systems.

PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN ANDADOLESCENT AT HIGH SOCIAL RISK

GROWING UP safely during childhood and adolescence is vital for ensuring a balanced and stable adulthood. In 2016, we assisted 173 children and young people in high risk of social exclusion who lived in deeply fragile environments in which insecurity is the norm. Their emotional state gets affected by these chaotic and highly deficient, unstable and stressful environments. From our High Social Risk Programs, we intend to offer a “space of fresh air” for both parents and children, comprehensively covering the affective, social and cognitive levels in order to help them build a happy, normal life.

ACTIVE CIVIC PARTICIPATION AND SOCIALINVIGORATION

During 2016, a total of 450 young people and adolescents from seven southern districts of Madrid have participated in the social, cultural, artistic and entertainment life of their neighborhood numerous activities of educational leisure (art, creativity, music, technologies, sport, nature and adventure activities, camps and festivals). Through these activities, we encourage the creation of positive relations, cohesion, cooperation, autonomy and a feeling of belonging to their neighborhood; essentially, positive socialization through exciting and innovative experiences. We would like to highlight the camps and nature activities organized in collaboration with the Tomillo Tiétar Foundation (www.tomillotietar.org) and the pilot project Camino de Santiago 2016 (pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela) named “Take the path, design your life”, an activity aimed at helping young people between 16 and 21 years old get their lives in order. In Colonia de Los Olivos, an area of the Latina district in high social and educational need, we have

worked with a multicultural group of 98 neighbors of different ages. Thanks to the support of the Municipal Council and the collaboration of the Iberdrola Foundation and Pricewaterhouse Coopers, and within the framework of the Territorial Rebalance Plan of the City Council, we launched two new projects of Sociocultural Animation and Early School Dropout Prevention and we improved the social conditions of this area.

With the intention of helping young people develop leadership and compromise with their backgrounds as factors of inclusion and active civic participation, in 2016 we launched several initiatives like “Pradolongo moves” in Usera, “Live Together and Provide Company” in San Blas, “Spring festival” in Villaverde, “Childhood day” in Vallecas, among others.

IMPROVING COMMUNICATIONAL, PROFESSIONAL AND ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS

Over 2016, we have continued to work on professional skills through the Reading and Scene Program, using theatre and acting techniques to help young people experience situations and struggles that they will have to face in their real-life work careers. This project was designed in partnership with Bank of America Merrill Lynch, whose volunteers participated in a workshop on improving employability conducting job interview simulations.

This year again young people from this program participated in the III Reading Tournament Juan Ramón Jiménez and were finalists in the individual category.

From the Training and Employment Area, in 2016 we would like to highlight the dreams that we have helped to make come true, those projects that seemed unworkable and have succeeded thanks to a combination of effort, patience and commitment.

We have boosted a shared training model in collaboration with companies, and we expanded it to incorporate other jobcreating sectors. We have also continued to develop training programs based on vocation, and we have made progresses regarding our learning methodology based on practical projects (“Learn Through Practice”).

These projects shared a common ground and they haven’t been a Tomillo Foundation’s single achievement; they’ve been dreamed and planned from an initial idea to which different entities, organizations and companies contributed, providing their knowledge and interest and expanding the reach. Within an environment of complex problems, we need diverse approaches to boost collaborative solutions.

The recently created Spanish Association of Second Chance Schools (E2O), of which Tomillo was one of the founding entities, is a clear example of this. Its purpose is to build a network of Spanish Second Chance Schools and other relevant actors from different sectors - business, academic, social and the very young people-, and it is based on a collaboration and alliance model in which every party provides their knowledge, experience and model of success to benefit young people.

We enjoy walking this path with all the people that share our mission, because just like León Felipe once said: “It is not important to reach our destination alone and soon, but to do it together and on time”.

To make your dreams come true, first you must have dreams

SHARED TRAINING PROGRAMS WITH COMPANIES FROM THE MOST IN-DEMAND JOB SECTORS

One of the keys of our work is to help companies identify specific opportunities for employment, which let us adapt the training we provide to the demands of the labor market. We have continued to reinforce shared training programs along with the company, where we jointly design the training contents and in which the company and its workers often participate through teaching and offering intern ships in order to ensure the perfect suitability to the demands of the current labor market.

We stand up for professionalism in the Hospitality sector, working together with big companies to train young people. Ween hanced our collaboration in the training program shared with Grupo VIPS and the joint project “We Create Opportunities in Hospitality” with Mahou-San Miguel Foundation, and we participated in the“Learning for Life” Program with Diageo and the Chamber of Commerce of Madrid.

On the other hand, within the Energy, Technology and Computing Sectors, several training programs were developed in collaboration with Telefónica Foundation and its partner companies in order to provide training regarding fiber optic installation; with SAP, to boost training on management tools; with Iberdrola, to train electricity-related skills, and with Grupo Norte, to promote care of dependent elderly.

VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE

We make use of educational motivation and employability improvement tools to work on Vocation and Talent, reinforcing personal skills that will be key for the future careers of young people.

During 2016 we have worked with 980 young people thanks to the support of many partner companies that are committed with the employment of young people in difficulty.

With the aim of sharing our collaboratively created and reality-based action principles and criteria, as much as the successful practices calibrated in our different programs and in other environments and entities, we will explain in detail this formerly mentioned intervention model in the Vocational Guidance Guidebook to be published in 2017.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

After many years collaborating with the European E2O network, in 2016 we actively participated in the creation of the Spanish Association of Second Chance Schools (www.e2oespana.org).

The training we provide stands out for its contemporary and innovative methodologic and pedagogic approach. The learning model we work with is based on practical projects, combining, when possible, learning and active service to society.

LEARNING AND HAVING FUN We encourage an approach towards learning in which enjoyment, cooperative work and social compromise help the development of technical and personal skills of young people.

With our project Access, supported by the USA Embassy, we have worked on teaching English, since we consider it to be a basic tool for the professional development of young people. Equally, we reinforced digital skills, the entrepreneurial spirit and soft skills like autonomy, self-knowledge and social compromise.

In partnership with Alicia Foundation and with the support of Daniel y Nina Carasso Foundation and Ebro Foods, in 2016 we launched the project Feed your future to promote a greater understanding of the importance of a healthy and sustainable nutrition, targeted at both students and teachers from Tomillo.

We ensured the labor integration of 222 people at risk of social exclusion through our Incorpora Program. In addition, we achieved 80% of employability through our Reincorpora Program, that supports the social and labor integration of prison inmates.

EMANCIPATION PROGRAM FORYOUNG ADULTS: SUPERVISED ANDTRANSITIONED INTO INDEPENDENCE

During 2016, we have assisted 90 adolescens and young people from ages 15 to 25, with complex life experiences lacking in adults to refer to. This host program provides training and social and labor guidance aimed at developing a successful transition towards emancipation and personal independence.

On top of that, this year we included volunteermentors that accompanied formerly mentored and/or homeless young people, and who shared their experience and knowledge with them. We worked together with RAIS Foundation, making the most out of this joint experience with socially vulnerable groups. Javi, Vocational Training’s student

FROM TOMILLO’S SCHOOL TO ANINTERNSHIP AT HOTEL RITZ

In high school I didn’t have motivation, I was bored and used to get bad grades, and soon I realized I wasn’t going to pass 3rd year and neither did I have a chance to continue my education. I felt as if I wasn’t going to be able to continue my studies, even though my dream had always been to be come chef. A friend told me about Tomillo Foundation, and I found a new opportunity. I decided I had to change and make an effort to pursue my dreams. I did it and soon I realized Tomillo welcomed me warmly, offering me a great opportunity. Although I did my bit, it was thanks to my teachers and schoolmates that I progressed more than I could have ever imagined.

During my first year in the vocational training course in Hospitality, when the time came to decide where would I do my internship, the yassigned me to Hotel Ritz (Madrid). That was the best thing that could have happened to meand it also made my friends and family happy.

Tomillo’s Integral Entrepreneurship Program is aimed at promoting entrepreneurship in all its activities and projects, facilitating the creation and consolidation of entrepreneurial enterprises and self-employment.

ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS

Our support ranges from the preliminary stage off ostering entrepreneurship to its implementation and subsequent assistance. Our performance also aims to obtain a “guarantee of confidence” that facilitates the access to funding sources.

During 2016 we strengthened the Lean Start Up methodology within our training itinerary with the aim of testing products and services before they go to market to ensure their viability.

In our view, supporting personal developmenthelps facilitate business development.

On this basis, our Training Itinerary Ítaca includes both professional and personal skills such as initiative, abilities related to searching for opportunities, calculated risk taking, determination, discipline and proficiency, quality and meeting of compromises, communication and self-knowledge.

Entrepreneurship and Integration, aimed at entrepreneurs from a migrant background, and Employment and Prison, aimed at improving the employability and social integration of inmates in third grade imprisonment.

From the Villaverde Business Incubator, part of the City Council, we offered counseling, training, setting up plans and networking. We abandoned the management of this project in 2017. As a preview of what is coming, from March 2017 we became Attention Point for Entrepreneurs (“PAE” in Spanish) of the Ministryof Economy, Industry and Competitiveness.

The goal is to facilitate the creation of new companies and the effective start and development of business activities through means such as information services, document processing, counseling, training and support for business funding.

GRANTS AND AWARDS TO FOSTERENTREPENEURSHIP

During the year, 10 grants were delivered aimed at the creation of prototypes and samples, attendance to fairs, design of brand images, communication and creation of landing pages to test products. A total of 27 projects from the YBS network participated in the first edition of the CVC Young Innovator Awards, which offered prizes from €5,000 to €10,000.

INCORPORA SELF-EMPLOYMENT POINT

In 2016 we launched Point PAI (Spanish acronym for “Incorpora Self-employment Point”), an initiative funded by Obra Social “La Caixa”and intended to support people that want to become self-employed.

Thanks to this new service, we assisted 127 people at risk of exclusion and 22 companies were set up.

We are passionate about resolving the great social challenges

Social innovation is a core element for the EU’s economic recovery after its worst crisis. Many actions are being promoted in which the voluntary sector (third sector) takes part, and undoubtedly the integration of vulnerable communities and of the gender perspective must be a transversal and inherent component in them. Neighborhood must be present in Europe.

We encourage the deep understanding and connection of the different levels of reality, from the European to the local, by means of social research and analysis. Our departmen carries out the think tank-do tank tasks at Tomillo Foundation, doing research on social challenges and contributing to the common growth. Our support is aimed at helping different public and social sector entities get a better understanding of their scopes of action. We also contribute with the evaluation and measurement of the impact of their programs and we assist them in their innovation processes.

Our job is indubitably exciting. Finding new ways to address big social challenges, empowering citizens, providing a better future for young people and developing new models of cooperation are significant and stimulating tasks. But we are certain that we don’t want to do it alone. For this reason, we advocate for planning joint efforts through collaborative projects, sharing a common agenda for all participants.

We are making progress on the development of shared measuring cells to evaluate development, sharing efforts among all the involved agents, the constant improvement of our communication channels and the building of a central axis to coordinate all the efforts. We look forward to your cooperation.

• Research about youth unemployment, for the purpose of identifying opportunities for intervention for a potential action program targeted at highly vulnerable youth.

• Collaborating with Codespa Foundation, weproduced the report “The path towards youth employment. What can the company do” within the framework of the Business Observatory against Poverty, that aims at showing an in-depth study of the youth unemployment problem and suggests patterns of action for companies that want to address this challenge effectively.

• Commissioned by the Directorate-General for Women of the Community of Madrid and cofunded by the European Social Fund, we developed the project Lead University, Equality and Professional Leadership. With the aim of stimulating motivation and encouraging women’s leadership, we carried out training and awareness-rising sessions for last-year undergraduate and graduate students of the universities in Madrid.

• For the previously mentioned Directorate-General for Women we also carried out the measurement of the pay gap and discrimination in the Community of Madrid, evaluating the progress between 2010 - 2014.

MEASURING THE IMPACT

During this year we draw to an end some works on measuring the impact of social and employment

16 PROJECTS FOR 12 ENTITIES ANDINSTITUTIONS

Since we are committed with the analysis and the search for solutions regarding complex social problems (reducing poverty, strengthening employability, improving education, improving training for employment), we design effective actions and carry out evaluation programs and measurement of the social impact of policies and projects.

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL RESEARCH

The main topics of analysis throughout 2016 have been related to social policies, particularly gender, employment and the impact of the crisis on poverty and social exclusion.

Among the projects carried out during 2016 in this area, we would like to highlight the following:

projects, such as the evaluation of the training programs for employment carriedout between 2012 and 2014 by the Tripartita Foundation, the measurement of the social impact of the Caja Burgos Foundation’s leisure, health and welfare programs, and the economic evaluation of the RAIS Foundation’s Housing Firstprogram for homeless people.

We have also made progress on the design of a tool for measuring the social impact of programs for the improvement of the employability of organizations that participate in the network “Together for the Employment of Vulnerable People”, in collaboration with Nittua and Accenture Foundation.

Other projects carried out:

• Final evaluation of the Third Plan of Action for Disabled People (2012-2015) of the Community of Madrid, in order to understand the impact of this policy on the disabled population of this region.

• Evaluation of the impact of Tomillo’s Program Leap towards Secondary School, whose objective is the prevention of school expulsion and truancy, facilitating the transition from primary to secondary education of students at risk and/or facing social difficulties.

SOCIAL INNOVATION

During 2016, Connected to Employment was launched, a collaborative project between Tomillo Foundation, Exit Foundation and Young North Assossiation, backed by the economic support of the JPMorgan Chase Foundation as part of its global initiative “New Skills at Work”, which seeks to reduce the existing imbalance between the training of vulnerable groups and the labor market.

Connected to Employment is based on the experience Sustainable Neighborhoods, a social innovation project in which, from 2015, young people trained in Energetic Science provided a free service aimed at enchancing the efficiency and sustainability of homes on the Usera district.

ONE OF OUR PRIORITIES IS THE GENERAL IMPROVEMENT INEDUCATION, PAYING PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THOSESCHOOL CONTEXTS THAT NEEDS IT THE MOSTWe work on the identification, design and transfer of good practices that promote school transformation and ensure the academic success of students from socially disadvantaged environments.

In our 30 years of experience, we’ve acquired vastknowledge and shared it with the educational community. In this time, we’ve been able to observe the pedagogical and social impact of our programs. Consequently, we believe that we can contribute to bring the change that education is demanding. We want to be active agents in the education transformation by providing effective tools and methodologies in order to foster good-quality training and help avoid academic failure. We want to be part of the solution.

We invest our efforts and energy in stimulating the flow of knowledge, talent and innovation in the educational environment, both in and out of the organization. Along with the officers of each program, we design materials and methodologies, we investigate and develop reproducible educational programs and we engage in the transference of new methodologies to the educational community.

We consider educators as the fundamental links in the chain of efforts of the whole community, and for this reason we address them in order to

Miguel HoweHead of Pedagogy and Educational Innovation

stimulate their development of their skills and to help them implement innovative and efficient tools and methodologies in their classes with the aim of reducing risk and academic failure indicators.

We believe it is essential to reclaim the professional vocation of teachers and educators to ensure they experience their career coherently and comprehensively. We believe that educators must feel fulfilled about their job in order to perform at their best. We support and assist them individually and/or as a group, helping them design and implement improvements in their programs.

Moreover, Tomillo Foundation serves as a meeting point and platform for sharing experiences and good educational practices, since we bring committed educators and pioneering ideas and methodologies in to contact. We must grow with the creation of a collaborative network. At the moment our database includes more than 400 professionals trained by us, who participate in work and discussion groups.

We are also a center for university internship, so students from different degrees have the chance to train their skills with us in an active environment.

We share more than 30 years of experience with the educational community

Un factor clave del cambio en la ciudad es trabajar con el ciudadano.

Juan KindelanHeath of Alliance and Project Strategy

A sustainable, intelligent and inclusive city covers issues like natural environment, energetic efficiency, employment, inclusion of vulnerable population and participative citizenship. We have connected these challenges, developing an innovative training model in which students become agents of change in their communities.

We are directing our efforts towards the creation of a project of collective impact in which 7 companies, 3 universities, 4 school centers, 2 high school centers in Usera and a larger group that includes social organizations and neighboring platforms are already collaborating together with the City Council of Madrid and various networks that share our goals and with which we can find multiple opportunities for progress.

Electricity, gardening and management students receive training in future professions related to energetic science and the roof gardens of buildings, and they put into practice their knowledge in their quarters. The group “Pradolongo Moves” is a space for collaboration for social agents and 14 neighboring associations that promote a change in the social usage of the Pradolongo Park. In partnership with the University Rey Juan Carlos and the University Pontificia de Comillas, and on the basis of the Solidarity Service Learning methodology, a number of awareness-raising sessions about Energetic Efficiency and Cleaning the Park were carried out. At the end of 2016, the project “Connected to Employment” brings a

new momentum to Sustainable Neighborhoods. In collaboration with Norte Joven Association and Exit Foundation, this project aims at increasing the intervention in other areas of Madrid and at a better understanding of the fast-growing market of the Energetic Sciences, identifying professional profiles in high demand in this sector.
