Dear Members,

Over the past two years, having assumed the presidency, I have had the pleasure of watching our active board transform itself into an effective, policy driven and member focused steward of our Alliance.

I, personally have been a member of Northalsted, since 1998, however, it was only after I was able to have the energy and time required to be a purposeful board member, that I joined the board four years ago.

My goal from the outset, was to be able to create a transformational impact on the organization. As such, the board has made this change, by recruiting excellent staff, developing strategic goals for the next few years, and holding ourselves accountable for achieving these goals. The goals are based on four strategic initiatives: Thought Leadership; Member Resources; Organizational Vitality and Market Identity.

I am extremely passionate about what we do at the Alliance as I live here and run my business here, so I have a vested interest to ensure our success.

Finally, I would like to thank our extremely competent board of directors and excellent staff, who all work tirelessly and passionately for all our members.

Best regards,Ramesh AriyanayakamPresident, Northalsted Business Alliance

WELCOME

Thought Leadership kicks off this initiative by the the newly formed partnership with the Legacy Project, to ensure that this neighborhood maintains it's diversity and vibrancy, by honoring our history and emboldening our future.

Member Resources have enabled us to, recruit new membership, provide useful resources for members, marketing our members, ensure security and increase member visibility and participation in our events.

Organizational Vitality ensures that we run profitable neighborhood events. In 2015 we had extremely successful events such as Frost Fest, Pride Fest, Market Days, the Halloween Parade. These events and others, that have yet to be named for 2016 and 2017, allow us the ability to hire excellent staff and ensure that we can give back as much as possible to our members.

Market Identity, ensures that we will have the 'look and feel' of our street that we can all be proud of, with increased screetscaping and identifying and enticing the best types of businesses for our neighborhood.

Dear Members,

As we reflect on the past year, we do so with great pride and with the understanding that there is considerable work yet to be done. In this Annual Report, we celebrate each of you, members of the Northalsted Business Alliance, who in ways small and large help to make Boystown and our neighborhood a vibrant place to live.

As you peruse this report, we hope that you will look back on this past year as a member and be Proud. Indeed, our goal remains quite clear --- to build upon the legacy of our Street, to help all of our members be successful and to create a neighborhood that is inviting to residents, tourists and the broader LGBTQ community throughout the region and the nation.

One of the brightest moments in this year happened recently, as we signed an historic agreement with The Legacy Project. This collaboration allows both organizations to further the aims of their individual missions, while joining together to further our shared commitment to the neighborhood. We anticipate that this collaboration will involve many of our members. Already we’ve had several tour groups come to visit the Legacy Walk and in doing so enjoy lunch at a member restaurant, shop at one of our distinctive retailers and partake in some delicious libations at a member bar.

As we look ahead to the goals of this collaboration, we have a clear path that is both informed and guided by the boards of both organizations and by you, our members. We’ve heard resoundingly about your desire to have more foot traffic on the street, to increase daytime activity, for their to be more options for lunch and finally for the neighborhood to have more diversification in our offerings. We believe that this is a first step in that process. Moreover, we believe that working together will help us to achieve all of those aims and many, many more.

A plan is only as successful as it is conceived and implemented. For the former, I thank the committed volunteers who serve on the NBA’s Board and their forward-thinking and forward-looking approach to this work. On the latter, I give my appreciation to the exemplary professionals on the NBA staff who work throughout the year to ensure that every member’s voice is heard equally.

Finally, to each of you, I hope that you’ve seen increased value in your membership over this past year. I trust that each of you has been contacted in some manner by Dustin, Chad, Eric or myself be it a simple check-in, an opportunity to partner, or simply to get resources that impact your business. At the end of the day, we remain ready and delighted to help each of you to be IN & PROUD.

Christopher Barrett PolitanExecutive Director, Northalsted Business Alliance

In March 2016 a formal collaboration between the Northalsted Business Alliance (NBA) and the Legacy Project (TLP) was put in place that establishes a framework to pursue creative solutions centered on boosting tourism – an area of mutual interest to both organizations. The Legacy Project – a Chicago-based 501(c)3 cultural/educational non-profit – manages the Legacy Walk, the only outdoor LGBT Historic museum walk in the world. This collaboration has placed TLP Founder and Executive Director Victor Salvo in the new role of NBA Programming Director tasked with finding ways to tie the LGBT community’s cultural past to the future of Northalsted.

Since its inaugural dedication in October 2012, Victor and his Legacy team have steadfastly guided the growth of the Legacy Walk and its bronze biographical memorials attached to the “Rainbow Pylons” that define the Northalsted Streetscape. These beautiful markers, which celebrate the contributions LGBT people have made to world history and culture, were recognized by the American Historical Association for outstanding LGBT Community History Exhibit in 2014 – the same year that Northalsted was named the Best LGBT Neighborhood in the World by OUTTraveler Magazine.

The Legacy Walk has attracted students, teachers, parents – and a growing number of traditional Boystown tourists – who all travel to Northalsted for guided tours through the lives of LGBT icons like Jane Adams, Walt Whitman, Sally Ride, and James Baldwin – highlighting an aspect of history they never knew was missing. While here they dine in our restaurants and shop in our stores, bringing activity to the streetscape hours before our famous night life even begins. The collaboration between the NBA and TLP means new resources are now available to market this unique attraction to a far broader audience than ever before – assuring a growing influx of tourism dollars to Northalsted.

Aggressive plans are currently being laid to creatively integrate LGBT cultural history into the very fabric of the Northalsted experience. These will include specialized walking tours, dining and entertainment tie-ins, musical performances, and unique gallery exhibits – all designed to drive patrons to Northalsted businesses. These dramatic changes are only possible because of the synergy between the NBA and TLP – an unprecedented collaboration that is already looking forward to the creation of a Visitors Center, a Northalsted Concierge Service, and an eventual Museum and Cultural Pavilion that will permanently establish Boystown in the pantheon of worldwide LGBT travel destinations.

In its 2015 membership season, the Northalsted Business Alliance has grown to over 100 members, many of which, are new not only to the Alliance, but to the community as well.

Located in the first floor space of Town Hall Apartments, Boystown’s first LGBT Senior Center, CrossTown Fitness has embraced the community and The Alliance since their arrival in 2015. Originally located in the West Loop, CrossTown has now expanded into Boystown, offering group fitness classes and personal training (they also provided a free class for fellow members earlier this year).“we will be lifelong members!”

The Northalsted Business Alliance strives to ensure the success of our member businesses, and asked Charles Graff, owner of CrossTown, how his experience with the Alliance has been after his first year of membership.

Q. How has being part of the NBA helped your business?A. The Northalsted Business Alliance has been a great resource for us and instantly made us feel welcome to the neighborhood. They are an information hub for new businesses, ongoing events and networking! They are a great bridge to the community, residents, and fellow business owners.

Q. How would you rate/describe the level of communication from NBA?A. Five stars, great from the start!

Q. Did/does the NBA make you feel welcome in the neighborhood? A. Yes, 100%. From our visit to the ribbon cutting! They stop in weekly to our club to see how we are doing.

Q. Do you consider the NBA to be a valuable resource for you and your business? A. Yes, and not just immeasurable value. They have actually brought us members and new clients. Thank you!

Q. Is there a specific highlight of your membership so far?A. Yes, the ribbon cutting event. We had a great turnout. It’s always fun to celebrate all the hard work to get to that point.

Q. Will you consider renewing your membership for the 2016 year?A. Yes, we will be life long members! Look forward to many years of working together.

CrossTown Fitness provides a great example of benefits a business can receive being part of the Northalsted Business Alliance. It is vital for every business, established or new, to have marketing and network support in their communities to sustain and grow their customer base. The Alliance is proud to have CrossTown Fitness as a member, and is confident that 2016 will be an even better year!
