Annual Report 2015-2016

Neighborhood Bike Works provides educational, recreational, and career-building opportunities for youth in under-served neighborhoods in greater Philadelphia through bicycling; it also promotes cycling as a healthy, affordable, environmentally form of transportation.

NBW has been a force for positive change in the lives of young Philadelphians since 1996. Our programs use bicycles to instill confi dence, inspire a spirit of adventure, and build skills for future success.

Celebrating 20 Years!

Neighborhood Bike Works is turning 20 years old this year, and we’ve built a continuing legacy of engaging Philly youth through bicycling and bike mechanics. Having joined NBW this spring, I’m impressed and inspired by the communities who have made this possible: our staff (with a shout-out to Erin DeCou for her huge impact at NBW), our Board of Directors, our supporters, and most of all the youth and families who are the reason for the work we’re doing together. We also have huge gratitude for our organization’s founders and past board and staff – because of their vision and efforts, we’re a stable, effective, innovative organization today.

I’m most inspired by how we’re doing that work. The core of NBW’s youth development programming has always been deep engagement of youth using bicycle riding and bike mechanics. We’re building confidence, resilience, and problem solving skills in the youth we serve – traits they’ll need as they become leaders in our community. As an organization committed to social justice and youth empowerment, we’re constantly learning from our youth leaders. Our Youth Council has been in existence for more than two years, and they’ve played a pivotal role in big organizational decisions during that time.

About a year ago, NBW relocated to a single location on Lancaster Avenue. From this new site within the West Philly neighborhood to which we’ve had the deepest connection over our history, we’re able to offer all of our programming. As a community of staff, volunteers, and youth and families, we now feel more connected.

As we look to the next 12 months and to the next 20 years, that connection will sustain us. In planning for our future, NBW is deeply conscious of the injustices faced within Philadelphia’s communities of color. Because of the stability NBW has achieved through the hard work of its staff, board, and supporters, NBW is ready to listen and nimble enough to respond to the needs of youth in our community.

In our 2015-2016 program-year, NBW’s Youth Bike Education & Empowerment Program (YBEEP) served 529 youth. Of those youth, 196 participated in NBW classes and on-site programs, 60 participated in our Freedom to Ride program, and 373 took part in community events including Bicycle Safety Checks, Safety Rodeos, and community bike rides. Across all of our classes, an average of 94.4% of youth completed their program. Cumulatively NBW distributed 128 bikes to youth participants, who rode 5,242 miles.

Building Confi denceYouth Programs

Our youth self-identified as 63% African American, 19% Caucasian, 11% bi/multi-racial, 5% Asian, and 3% Hispanic. Of our youth participants, 21% were in elementary school, 42% in middle school, and 38% in high school. Fifty-five percent of the families we served identified themselves as low-income.

Bike Church is your chance to repair your own bike in an environment that is welcoming and safe for learning. Led by volunteers and run on donations from participants, Bike Church offer participants use of repair stands, professional-quality bike tools, and fun.

Our Adult Bike Repair Class is your chance to learn or brush up on basic bike mechanic skills. Learn to repair flat tires, adjust brakes and shifting, and adjust bearing systems.

During the 2015-2016 program year we served 85 adults through eight sessions of the class. These classes provided a job training opportunity for eight of our youth, each of whom co-taught a session of the class with a staff instructor.

Mel’s Community Bike Shop is NBW’s earned-revenue project and is the place to go in Philly for affordable, refurbished used bikes. All sales

We sell refurbished used bikes for adults and kids, and new and used bike parts and accessories. In addition to being a community resource and an income source for NBW, Mel’s Community Bike Shop is a job skills training site for youth.
