Sphinx Observatory
About Sphinx Observatory• opened in 1912, it became the highest railway stop in all of
Europe• headquarters for researchers in fields such as glaciology,
medicine, cosmic ray physics, and astronomy• also provides visitors with vertigo-inducing, panoramic views
of the snowy Alps, green valleys, and the Great Aletsch Glacier
• Perched at 3,571 meters in the Swiss Alps the Sphinx Observatory is located on top of a small, separate mountain on Jungfraujoch.
Inside…• The scientific part of the Sphinx observatory includes two
large laboratories, a weather observation station, a workshop, two terraces for scientific experiments, an astronomical as well as a meteorological cupola.
Rundetårn Observatory
Where is it?• the observatory is part of the Trinitatis Complex (which also
provided the scholars of the time with a university chapel, the Trinitatis Church)
• People have been looking at the stars in Rundetaarn since 1642
• It is used as an attraction to the area, like a museum.
• oldest astronomical observatories in Europe• constructed during the reign of King Christian 4, Denmark’s
most famous historical monarch,• Construction began in 1637 and finished in 1642.
The text on the front of Rundetaarn is a rebus
by the king who built it, King Chriatian IV, and says: "Lead God, the right teaching and
justice into the heart of the crowned King Christian IV, 1642"
• spiral walkway is 209 meters long and winds around inside Rundetaaarn seven and a half times from the front door past the different levels and up to the platform
