The foundation stone for Hashim Welfare Hospital (HWH) was laid on 9 April 1999 in Pindi Hashim, a rural village in Pakistan between Islamabad and Lahore and the first patient was seen on 1 June 2003. The founding charity, Hashim Welfare Hospital Appeal (HWHA), is based in the UK and the Hashim Welfare Association (HWA) is running the hospital in Pakistan.

Clinical work at HWH is a continuing source of comfort for patients and relatives in a country where good quality, accessible health care is difficult to find. In 2013, the Government of Pakistan spent only 2.8% of gross domestic product (GDP) as compared to India which spend 4%, Afghanistan 8.1% and Americans 17.1%, on health care (Health expenditure 2010-14, total % of GDP, The World Bank website).

FUTURE PLANS

Our success in clinical work over the past 11 years has led to the organic development of four distinct departments; research and diagnostics, maternity, surgery and general medicine, eye health. We now have a pressing need to maintain our existing facilities as well as expand in order to care for an increasing number of patients.

The Hashim Welfare Hospital in Village Pindi Hashim, Pakistan is a combined project of two charities, in the UK and Pakistan, founded by Dr Mohammad Idrees Awan who was born and raised there.

Introduction

Hashim Welfare Hospital Appeal Annual Report 2013/14 3

maintain our existing facilities as well as expand in order to

care for an increasing number of patients.

Chairman’s report

No matter how much planning we do we never know what each year is going to bring until we can look back. It gives us great pleasure to report that more than 448,978 deserving patients have been treated successfully since we started clinical services in June 2003. For a small charity like ours these figures are always humbling.

2015 is the year of action for continuation of phase 2 construction plans. A small cafeteria is being built at the front of the Hospital and will soon be fully functional for the benefit of patients and relatives. Land at the back of the Hospital has been levelled, ready to begin foundation work for the maternity and general wards. We will increase the fundraising drive for this major project throughout the year.

As for our clinical work, the eye department has become number one in whole of district Gujrat in terms of performance. The eye outpatient and eye surgery times and days are fixed for the convenience of patients, many of whom come from far-flung areas. Last year, 11,049 eye patients where treated and 1,121 patients had cataract operations, restoring their eye-sight. (See page 8). The maternity department has completed four years of service and last year 1,510 procedures were successfully performed including 477 normal deliveries and 1,029 caesarean sections (see page 8). After the outpatients department, the diagnostic department is still the busiest part of the hospital. The supportive role of diagnostics is obvious from our clinical data.

One of ours doctors recently left, leaving a gap in our services for nearly six months. Staffing problems are well known in rural areas but I am glad to say we have now appointed Dr Amina Fareed, a consultant gynaecologist. This has greatly increased positive surgical outcomes, thus reducing the need to refer patients to specialist, tertiary care. As a matter of principle being a small hospital in a rural area, we always refer our patients to state hospitals if required and we are trying to establish the routines and guidelines for these referrals for the ease of patients.

In the year to December 2014, HWH spent more than £228,000, approximately 34,300,000 Rupees, to run HWH (see page 11). These costs were met by donations as well as charges to well-off patients, amounting to approximately to 25% from the UK and 75% from Pakistan. Regular standing orders are almost £3,000 per month from the UK and are the key stabilising factor in the current financial situation of the charity (see page 10).

I thank Almighty God for His continued blessings. Your help support and well wishes is what keeps us going personally and as a charity created for the service of the poor and needy. None of this could have been achieved without you; donors, friends, colleagues, charity members, hospital staff at HWH, Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and of course our families.

The annual report gives us great encouragement as we reflect upon another year of improved quality of care at Hashim Welfare Hospital.

HWA, Pakistan

The Hashim Welfare Association (HWA) is encouraging local donors to get involved in the relief activities of the charity including the push for blood donors. This is being run by Mr Aziz ur Rehman Mojahid. The HWA has a growing a list of donors willing to give blood for patients if needed.

AGM, OCTOBER 2014

Our chief guests for the AGM were Haji Malik Mohammed Nawaz, patron of our charity and Ijaz Ahmed, a local business man. Dr Awan expressed his gratitude to the efforts of the team who helped victims of flooding in the Punjab in September 2014. He also informed all members and donors about the great work done by doctors and staff who treated more than seventy seven thousand patients last year.

ANNUAL BUDGET MEETING, 29 MARCH 2015

The meeting was very successful with the venue filled to capacity despite the heavy rain. Shaykh Tariq from Lalla Musa, District Gujarat, was our chief guest and generously donated 100,000 Rupees, with a commitment to do more in the future. Dr Awan discussed the progress of the hospital as well as spending on patients and staff. The great news was that 75% of the expenses were met from Pakistan, through donations and charges for well-off patents, with the rest of the funds coming from the UK. It was agreed that as we grew, the hospital budget will increase every year and the HWA would need to raise funds accordingly.

The great news was that 75% of the expenses were met from Pakistan, through donations and charges for well-off patents.

The Hashim Welfare Association has been very successful in mobilizing local donors and raised 450,000 Rupees during the annual budget meeting in March 2015.

Future plans

We have spent a lot of time in discussions about the current and future needs of the hospital and it is now time for action.

The phase 2 extension plans have been divided into four stages in order to ease the burden funding and allow for steady but sure growth. A small cafeteria in the front lawn of the hospital is near completion, work on the two-storey inpatients wards in the allocated land at the back of hospital should have started by the end of July. As part of preparation for the extension, land behind the current hospital building has been levelled, ready for the foundations.

The next two stages include a second-storey of the investigation and theatre blocks and the second storey of the out-patients block including an auditorium. Each stage of the phase 2 will be multi-use until the work is complete.

Support from Professionals

We are delighted to report that the following doctors have started generous standing orders and have offered pro bono advisory services in their respective specialities; Dr Tariq Zaman, orthopaedic consultant, Dr Asif Raza, consultant urologist, Dr Adnan Aali consultant microbiology and Dr Sohail Sharik consultant gastroenterologist . Newly qualified doctor, Hussain Khaki, who dreams of becoming a consultant surgeon, said he would like to offer time on the ground at HWH in the future. He has also started a standing order and has encouraged members of his family to do the same.

UK ALUMNI

Many doctors from the Allama Iqbal Medical College, Pakistan, who are working in the UK, have got together and are in the process forming an alumni association. We hope AIMC Alumni UK, as a medical association will be very helpful for Hashim Welfare Hospital in the future.

Dr Awan had recently started work at Ealing Hospital in Middlesex and has introduced the charity among senior consultants who have shown a real interest in our work.

Visitors to HWH

We encourage donors and well-wishers to visit the hospital to see for themselves the great work being done by doctors and staff on the ground.

A large majority of Pakistani migrants in the UK hail from the Punjab region of Pakistan. They come from villages and towns from Lahore all the way up to Peshawar and the north-west Frontier province. These places are all linked by the famous Grand Trunk (GT) road, an ancient highway which runs from Bangladesh to Afghanistan. Pindi Hashim is small village within Kharian, an important district which sits between the country’s capital, Islamabad, and Lahore.

Many supporters or their families originally come from villages and towns between Lahore and Islamabad. They often bring friends or relatives for consultation or treatment which helps to spread the word and also encourages us to maintain the highest possible quality of care.
