There is little government contribution to healthcare in Pakistan, especially for infrastructure and oversight, so poor and low income families are at the mercy of a largely unregulated private health sector.
In 2012 Pakistanis spent 2.8% of gross domestic product (GDP) on healthcare, with the government contributing only 36.9% to the total. In comparison, the French spent 10.4% of GDP, with the government contributing 77.4% to the total (World Health Statistics 2015, World Health Organisation).
THE HOSPITAL
The HWHA was founded in 1999 by Dr Idrees Awan, a urological surgeon from the UK, who wanted to give something back to the area in Pakistan where he grew up.
This hope became a reality when, after years of planning, and with the support of a small group of friends and donors, the Hashim Welfare Hospital (HWH) finally opened its doors to the first patients on 1 June 2003. Since then, HWH has treated over 520,000 patients.
PHASE 2
Over the years, as the hospital has grown, distinct departments have naturally developed, including eye care, maternity, surgery, and a well equipped laboratory. To continue providing quality care the hospital must improve facilities, including new wards and accommodation. This year the charity is aiming to raise at least £125,000 to continue phase 2 of the development plan and ensure we continue to provide the best care for those in need.
The core objective Hashim Welfare Hospital Appeal (HWHA)
is to provide high quality, accessible healthcare, with a focus
on the poor and needy.
Introduction
Hashim Welfare Hospital Appeal Annual Report 2015/16 3
Thanks to your support, since 2003 HWH has treated over
520,000 patients
Chairman’s report
The usual stresses caused by the increased challenges, which have come with the growth of Hashim Welfare Hospital (HWH), have been offset by the trust our patients and families have shown us over the years.
During my visit to the European Urology Conference 2016 in Germany, I showed our annual report to friends and colleagues who were greatly impressed. They advised that the continued success of the hospital would naturally lead to increased pressure on management. With this in mind, I began a process of auditing the departments at HWH, including non-medical and maintenance, and ensuring we have a good structure to maintain standards.
CORE OBJECTIVE
The core objective in all our planning must be the patients. Our supporters will be pleased to hear that more than 520,000 patients have been treated in HWH since 1 June 2003. The eye and maternity departments have proved to be a great success; we are probably the best performing charity in the districtof Gujarat.
Dr Ajmal Nisar, consultant eye surgeon, has started laser treatment for post-operative cataract patients. This has further improved the performance of the department. We will be acquiring new equipment once money is available. Morethan 83,400 eye patients have been treated while over 6,800 patients have had cataracts removed, restoring their eyesight (see page 8).
The maternity department has gone from strength to strength in five years. We have performed 5,813 maternity procedures, including normal deliveries and C-sections, and seen almost 42,000 patients in hospital (see page 8). Dr Amina Farid, a consultant gynaecologist who joined us last year, has become very popular among patients due to her polite nature and professionalism. Dr Maryam Raana, a consultant gynaecologist, has recently joined us, taking our total to two consultants. The anaesthetic department has helped to improve the overall performance of the surgical department, since consultant anaesthetist Dr Naveed Choudary also joined the HWH team.
The diagnostic department is still the busiest part of the hospital after the outpatients. The supportive role of diagnostics is obvious by our clinical data. Diagnostics include serum, and other types of blood tests, ultrasound scans during pregnancy and ECG tests for heart disease. In all, more than 225,800 tests have been performed (see page 8).
PHASE 2 CONSTRUCTION
I am pleased to announce that, by the grace of God, on 3 April 2016 we began the next part of phase 2. Initially two further wards will be built on the ground floor with the final part of phase 2 to include a second storey. To complete phase 2, through all its stages, we need to raise at least £500,000.I am humbled to report that six donors have alreadypledged £70,000.
In the last financial year, spending on the hospital was over £273,000; nearly 42 million Rupees (see page 11). These costs were offset by donations from the UK and Pakistan as well as the fees charged to those patients who can afford to pay. In keeping with our goal of financial sustainability, it is pleasing to note that currently 76% of costs are being met in Pakistan with 24% coming from the UK. A significant amount of UK donations are from standing orders which total more than £3,000 per month (see page 10).
As always, I thank Almighty God for His continued blessings. None of this could have been achieved without your support; our families, donors, friends, colleagues, charity members, Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and our team on the ground at HWH.
The continuing trust from donors and supporters
has increased our confidence in running this
organisation.

ANNUAL BUDGET MEETING, APRIL 2016
Mr Akhtar is a local supporter who currently lives in the
UK and was one of our chief guests. He donated 800,000
Rupees as part of his 1.5 million Rupees pledge. As is
customary, we were joined by the patron of the charity
Haji Malik Nawaz.
Dr Awan expressed his gratitude to the team for
improvements in treatment standards and hygiene
and general cleanliness of the hospital. He informed
all members and donors about the great work done by
doctors who have treated more than 75 thousand patients
in HWH in one year.
THE AGM, OCTOBER 2015
Dr Awan discussed progress at the hospital including
spending on patients and staff for the financial year
ending June 2015. Last year, spending on the HWH was
over £273,000 or nearly 42 million Rupees. 76% of costs
those costs were met in Pakistan with 24% coming from
the UK. The main discussion points during this meeting
focused on phase 2 construction and ways to raise funds
for this essential project.
This year we were honoured to
have two of our main donors from
the UK, Malik Zahid Akhtar and
Raja Arshad Mahmood join us at
our budget meeting.

In the last financial year, spending on the HWH was over £273,000, nearly 42 million Rupees.
Phase 2 plansTo continue providing quality healthcare we must improve facilities
and infrastructure, including new wards and accommodation.
Phase 2 has been divided into four stages to ensure funding is available
for each stage. The first storey, an inpatients ward, will start after Ramadan
time 2016. As part of preparations, land behind the current hospital
building has been levelled for the foundations.
The next three stages include the second story of the investigation
and theatre blocks and the second story of the outpatients block and
auditorium. In order to maximise the use of the space, each stage of the
extension will be multi-purpose use until the building is complete.
This year the charity is aiming to raise at least £125,000 to continue phase
2 of the development plan and ensure we continue to provide the best care
for those in need well into the future.

PRAYERS FROM A GRATEFUL PATIENT
I saw an elderly lady lying on a couch waiting for the nurse. A
young, veiled woman was gently massaging her legs for comfort.
It was a very nice for me to see our local culture where younger
people help and comfort their elders. The elderly woman was
Mrs Anayat Bibi. She was there with her daughter-in-law and
her grandson for a follow-up cataract consultation.
The family had travelled from a village in district Gujrat, about
15 miles from HWH. Mrs Bibi had eye surgery done the previous
day and was very happy to see bright light in her eyes after such
a long time. It was the first time she had used HWH and was
very happy with the care she received.
Mrs Bibi told me that she had heard about HWH from her
extended family. She said, ‘my relatives told me HWH is very
good and popular hospital, and I found it to be the best and I will
pray for this hospital and tell my friends and relatives about
it also’.
Dr Awan visits the hospital at least
twice a year and as a practising
surgeon he can’t help but get
involved in caring for the patients.

A beautiful baby girlOn one of my routine ward rounds I saw new mother
Mrs Salam Waqas with a beautiful newborn baby girl. I
introduced myself and I asked about how she came to be
at HWH.
Mrs Waqas said she started feeling labour pains at
around 6pm the previous night but was unable to travel
immediately. Early the next morning the family began a 50
mile journey from their village, Kot Jamal in Azad Kashmir,
to get to HWH. She was admitted at 7am and the baby was
born at 11:30am, by normal delivery.
I asked Mrs Waqas why she decided to use HWH. She told
me that her sister-in-law had a baby by c-section two and
half years ago at HWH and that she would only use HWH
when it was her time. She was scared that if a c-section was
needed it would be too costly in other hospitals.
Mrs Nabila Wajid, Mrs Waqas’s sister-in-law, who was
present with her mother-in-law, told me that they would
be using the hospital for elective c-section when her new
baby was due.
