Message from the Chair

I’ve been involved with Youthdale and the Youthdale Foundation since 1971, and I continue to be inspired by the stories I hear and the people I meet, whetherit’s Youthdale children and their families, or the dedicated Youthdale employeesand Youthdale Foundation volunteers.

I’m pleased to report that Youthdale Foundation has had another successful year. We have made a great deal of progress in funding the The Wolf Family Chair in Neurodevelopmental Psychiatry, and have a plan to make this importantinitiative sustainable.

We continue to work to generate support for the many great programs you’ll read about in the pages that follow. Many of these are only possible because of the outstanding efforts of our volunteer board, and the generosity of our corporate and individual donors.

This year’s report includes the story of a Youthdale and Camp Magnetawan participant, which inspires all of us to make a difference in the lives of childrenand youth. This is an important cause, and one which both challenges and givesus great satisfaction.

Youthdale Treatment Centres continues its efforts to open a new acute care in-patient and out-patient service for youth 16-18, and we will strive to assistYouthdale in raising funds for this essential enhancement of its services.

We are pleased to announce that Base Consulting and Management has been contracted to help expand our fundraising capabilities. Base will be working with the Foundation board to ensure we fully capitalize on all fundraising opportunities.

My heartfelt thanks to our board, volunteers, and personal and corporate donors. Together we’re helping Youthdale do even more for the well-being of Ontario children and their families.

Sincerely

Paul Nightingale, B. Arch. MRAIC MOAA (Ret.)Chair, Youthdale Treatment Centres Foundation

The Wolf Family Chair in Neurodevelopmental Psychiatry

Youthdale and the University Health Network raised $1 million toward an endowmentfor a Chair in Neurodevelopmental Psychiatry, and the Wolf Family matched thosefunds with an additional $1million endowment to create The Wolf Family Chair inNeurodevelopmental Psychiatry.

We have a plan to raise another $1 million with the help of the UHN, to help make this initiative sustainable for the foreseeable future. The Wolf Family Chair will advance the understanding and treatment of Tourette’s Syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), autism spectrum condition, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Drama and arts at Camp Magnetawan

This year’s musical, “Grease,” involved over twenty children in the cast and productionteam. The production was bigger than ever, with much more attention paid to props, sets, costumes, and makeup.

The performance received rave reviews. This was a significant endeavour, with a great deal of memorization of parts and choreography. The prep included breathing exercises, choreography training, voice work, singing, acting,prop-making, and costume design.

The arts program was also very popular, and the children produced some truly beautiful artwork, in charcoal, watercolors, pastels, and paint on canvas. Photography was a hit as always, with many outstanding photos shot of camplife and the natural beauty that surrounds it.

Once again, script writing, filming, and editing videos were hugely popular at camp. We introduced green screens, special effects and lighting, and this year the children were fully involved in all aspects of movie making.

It’s amazing to see how these programs impact the children’s overall behaviour, participation, and attitude. The relationships and new skills they develop also have a long lasting positive effect on participants’ outlook and confidence. Our thanks to the W.C. Kitchen Family Foundation for its generosity in supporting this program.

Youthdale drama workshop continues

Acting Out number four was outstanding. The children performed a selection of scenes from “Scratch” by CharlotteCorbeil-Coleman, “Waiting for the Parade” by John Murrell, “The Dishwashers” by Morris Panych, “That Summer”by David French, “Filthy Rich” by George F. Walker, and “Strawberries in January” by Evelyne de la Cheneliere.

The show received rave reviews and standing ovations both nights, and the group displayed confidence, stage presence, and great comedic timing. With the support of their families and the Friends of Youthdale, these children, many of whom would never have agreed to be on-stage in the past, thoroughly enjoyed this significant accomplishment. The drama workshop is made possible by the generous donation of Margaret Nightingale.

The Kinder Foundation’s Youthdale benefit

The Kinder Foundation supports children’s charities, and teamed up with some localbanks at “Downtown Jam” to create another amazing night of music. A significant donation from this event went directly to support the Youthdale Foundation.

Youthdale’s Speaker’s Series

Dr. Sylvia Kemenoff continued to increase adolescent mental health awareness among parents and teachers, presenting “Signs and Symptoms of Adolescent Anxiety and Depression: When to Worry? What to Do?” at schoolboard and Youthdale events. In the past year, Sylvia delivered this talk to parents at one Toronto Catholic DistrictSchool Board and two Toronto District School Board meetings.

Sylvia was also invited to speak to teachers during a Professional Development Day, and spoke at a KPMG MentalHealth Awareness Week event.

Fundraising for the Youthdale riding program

The Foundation’s support helped the stable include participants from four Youthdale residences and offer two fullscholarships of private lessons to Youthdale riders. Many people involved with horses understand the benefit of thehorse/human bond, so private donors have also been generous. We’re pleased to hear that a former riding programparticipant is now in a university equine studies program in Alberta!

Bahrs Saddlery donated the proceeds of the barbecue at their giant sale to the riding program, and Winsong Farminvited eight Youthdale residents to watch their annual show, and donated the proceeds of the show to our program.Winsong is a private farm that teaches horses to do unusual things, such a fetching and even painting, so the showwas entertaining as well!

Once again, Youthdale home residents were given tickets to attend The Royal Winter Fair. This has become an annual gift through our ‘horse connections.’ Tickets are expensive, and we get 50 each year!

Our eight volunteers and two committed coaches have been with us for many years, and we consider ourselves veryfortunate that they dedicate their time and energy to this work.

Creating great food habits

In October 2012, Youthdale participated in The Kids Culinary Community for a second year. This is a not-for-profitorganization founded by chef and restaurateur Julia Hanna, to educate children on the benefits of healthy eating byproviding experiential learning programs.

Ten of our kids participated in this hands-on program. They attended three Saturday sessions at Longo’s specialkitchen, and were taught by Julia and dedicated volunteers. Julia inspires with her energy and charisma and, throughher creative cooking, teaches that it’s possible to enjoy food that is nutritious and delicious. Participants also learnvaluable lessons about the environment and the local economy. A big thank you to Julia Hannah and Longo’s.

TD Bank Group’s support of Youthdale’s South Asian Community Outreach continues

Thanks to the funding commitment from TD Bank Group, now in its fourth year, Youthdale is able to continue its support of the Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office, to deliver mental health education for local youth and families, and a path to care for those requiring mental health services.

TD funding also contributed significantly to the development of Cultural Aspects of Psychiatry, aground-breaking booklet for clinicians, educators, and parents, developed with four leading mental health professionals worldwide. Its goal is to increase understanding of culture as an essential element in mental healthtreatment, and it will be widely distributed to schools and social and health organizations.

Youthdale Child and Adolescent Sleep Centre

The clinic treats more than 80 children and youth per month, many of whom are referrals from Youthdale. The clinic’s research includes a study into sleep difficulties ofchildren with fetal alcohol syndrome, an international first, the relationship betweenchildhood obesity and sleepiness, and sleep problems and suicidal behavior.

This last year the clinic focused on a large study on the biologic correlates of depressionin children. It also published its first paper on sleep changes in in-patients at Youthdale, and have acquired equipment to open a two-bed unit on the in-patient ward.

Corporate donors continue to make a real difference in children’s mental health

Multiple year corporate donors provide greater funding stability and predictability, and the Foundation would liketo once again acknowledge the support of BLG Borden Ladner Gervais, Toshiba, EquiGenesis, Telus, Lexus on thePark, Bristol-Meyer Squibb Canada, and Sychem. Each has returned to help the Foundation support Youthdale’s important work.

“I arrived at ‘592 House’ (a Youthdale residence) justafter I turned 12. I had been in a foster home for a fewmonths, after being removed from my family home. I had avoided going to school for most of that year, and really didn’t know where I was going or what I was going to do.

“The Youthdale staff took the time to get to know meand understand my challenges. It was here that I was diagnosed with dyslexia. I was 12, and couldn’t read orwrite. Also, as a new resident, I had to earn my privilegeswith my behaviour. This was completely new to me. My brothers and sister are much older than me and, when I was growing up, our household had absolutelyno rules or structure.

Youthdale residential supervisor Anna Quattrocchi recalls her experience with Naomi quite vividly. “Naomiwas articulate, inquisitive, and charming. We helpedNaomi discover and capitalize on her personal strengthsand, with a supportive team at home and at school, sheblossomed into a strong and resilient young woman.”

Naomi has fond memories of some of the recreationalactivities that helped her during her time at Youthdale.“I count the horseback riding opportunity as one of the highlights of my life, and something that I’ll neverforget. It was amazing, and unlike anything I’d ever done before.

“The summer camp was a completely new experiencefor me too. Oh my god – I loved it! I’d never been tocamp before, or even been outside the city, really. Ilearned to swim at Camp Magnetawan, canoed andkayaked for the first time, and I loved the drama program.

“My camp experience didn’t start on the right foot, though. I got chicken pox just as I arrived at the camp,so I was isolated from everyone. Here I was in a completely new place that’s supposed to be about havingfun, and I’m stuck in a cabin for a week! The camp staffwas great and, looking back, my two seasons at camphelped me decide that I wanted to be a Child and YouthWorker, a designation that I continue to pursue.

“Anna at Youthdale was one of the first people I everopened up to about my issues, and she made me feel like I had someone in my corner who understood what I was going through. That support, and the structureand routine really helped me get on the path that I’m on today. Youthdale helped me learn to read, and Camp Magnetawan helped me feel like a normal kid. Of course I still have my challenges, but I also have tools to help me deal with them, and I’m optimisticabout my future.”

“The Youthdale routine and support reallyhelped me, and I was tutored by a teacher atthe Jerome D. Diamond adolescent centre. I was reading independently within a year, and received an achievement award for theprogress I had made.

“It took a lot more work for me to finish highschool, but the Youthdale experience reallychanged my path. I don’t know where I’d bewithout it. Thanks to all the support and somedetermination, I graduated high school as anOntario Scholar – not bad for a kid who was illiterate at 12.

Youthdale Treatment Centres2012 Highlights

Camp Magnetawan programjust keeps getting better

For over 40 years, Youthdale’s Camp Magnetawan has enabled children in treatment to experience, learn, andgrow in a therapeutic summer camp environment. We’re building on that tradition with new and improvedfacilities and programs, and by offering camp spaces tochildren outside of Youthdale’s other programs.

In summer 2012, an educational program focusing onEnglish was introduced at Camp Magnetawan. This year,Science and Physical Education are being added. Some of these courses will give participants additional creditstoward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma, and allwill help build confidence and academic foundations forthe future.

Continued progress on a new acute care unit for young adults

The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care has been receptive to the development of an additional ten psychiatric beds, and Youthdale’s in the final stages of securing additional space and funding to accommodatethe program.

Expanding our reach with tele-medicine

The tele-medicine program is growing, and Youthdale is negotiating a partnership with SickKids to enlarge themodel of treatment in this province and beyond.

Sharing Youthdale expertise around the world

Youthdale’s most recent international visitors were from Qatar. Youthdale is renowned worldwide for itsachievements, and its willingness to share insights and best practices with other children’s mental healthprofessionals.

Serving complex needs across Canada

Youthdale Treatment Centres is recognized for its leadership in treating children with complex needs, and more out-of-province organizations are coming to Youthdale for support services each year.

Youthdale is proud of its standing in the child psychiatric community in Canada and internationally.

Advancing treatment within and beyond Youthdale

As part of Youthdale’s goal to help children becomemore confident and self-sufficient, additional effort is being directed to improve the integration of Youthdale children in their schools and families. Effective integration is complex, and requires a different type of orientation for staff, and the parentsand children they serve.
