September 2012

Dear Friends,

We write with pleasure as we reflect on this special 80th anniversary year, knowing that you share our deep gratitude and love for Friends education and Quaker schools. The 2011-12 year gave us many opportunities to join together through the 80th anniversary regional receptions, peer networks, professional conferences and workshops. These gatherings lifted up the beautiful thread that runs through all of Friends education, a connection woven by devoted teachers, administrators, trustees, and families that are the strength of Quaker school communities. It is clear that you appreciate Friends Council’s work for those communities by your generous support of our mission. You are a vital member of the extended web that is the Friends Council community, and we could not accomplish our work without you. Here’s what you made possible this year:

Programs: Our workshops and peer network gatherings were well attended and enthusiastically received. We served 522 participants this year from 65 member schools including six global affiliate schools. The Quaker-Based Decision-Making workshop and Mindfulness for Educators course flourished, and registration for the Educators New to Quakerism workshops saw an increase of nearly 30 percent! In Fall 2011, two new groups of participants entered our two-year leadership development programs: SPARC and the Institute for Engaging Leadership in Friends Schools. Members are exploring ways to grow leadership potential and strengthen the Quaker dimension across the Council’s network of Friends schools. Participants in all programs consistently report deep satisfaction with their experiences.

Governance: Augmenting numerous on-site, electronic and telephone consultations on governance, Friends Council and the Association of Delaware Valley Independent Schools (ADVIS) partnered to develop a collaborative program addressing the critical issue of school governance and financial sustainability. We will launch our first online courses, podcasts and a blog this fall under the name Trustee U. The program is a first-ever collaboration across two associations of independent schools and provides our organiza-tions with a new model for 21st century program delivery with all material to be permanently archived and publicly available.

Friends Education Outreach: In September 2011 we co-sponsored, with Friends Fiduciary Corporation, the Quaker Fund-raisers conference. In this two-day gathering, participants from Friends schools and a wide variety of Quaker organizations learned from fundraising experts and from their peers, gaining practical information to implement in their own settings. In March 2012, we co-sponsored, planned and presented the Mindfulness in Education Network’s annual conference, which was held at Bryn Mawr College.

Diversity: As part of the strategic initiative to support diversity work at our schools, we attended the NAIS People of Color Conference in December and organized Friends schools to co-sponsor a screening of the documentary film, “Brother Outsider,” on the life and work of Bayard Rustin. In March, the Diversity peer network sponsored a day-long conference at Friends Center, drawing more than 30 enthusiastic participants from 17 schools.

Scholarship Support: This year we began administering the Friends Education Fund (FEF), donor-restricted for financial assistance for Quaker families with children at Friends schools in the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting region. In addition to aid from this fund, FCE provided tuition aid grants to small schools and provided financial assistance for participants to attend Friends Council programs.

This has been a vibrant anniversary year, celebrating eight decades of renewal and enrichment throughout the Quaker education network. We are grateful for your heartfelt and unwavering passion for Friends education, which makes all of our work possible. Thank You.

Sincerely,

David Tomlin, Clerk Irene McHenry, Executive Director

EVERGREEN CIRCLEOF FRIENDS

Mimsey Potts on Planned GivingThe Backbone of SupportYou’ve been an Annual Fund donor for quite a while. What motivated you to make a planned gift at this point?Ever since I was a parent and faculty member back in the days of Howard Bartram at Abington Friends School, I have been involved with several Quaker schools -- from the tiny, emerging ones to the old, established ones. I was also on the Education Committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting when we used to visit many, many schools to spend the day and confer with the head of each school. As a consequence, I have a full understanding of the constant need for funds to meet immediate obligations as well as to fulfill plans for the future.

What is so special about Friends schools that they deserve our financial support? After a few of these visits, I realized there was something similar about all Quaker schools: an intentionally inclusive community. Friends involve everyone – faculty, staff, trustees, students, and parents – in the life of the school and its academic program, and in the decision-making process. That kind of integrated approach is key to the way these schools achieve the goal of instilling Quaker values -- the essence of Friends education.

Friends Council has the authority and experience to help a school be who it wants to be. It can be a challenge to get across to people that they are joining a community when they enroll their child or take a teaching position, and Friends Council is set up to hold that commu-nity and help it grow. It seems to me that FCE has taken the bull by the horns and is an important resource for our schools. They have an interest in the Quaker faith, and to have a whole council to carry out the job of helping schools give children the chance to develop fully, that is what I call the backbone of support. With 80 years experience they should know how to give solid advice on creating Friends schools!

There are several ways to create a legacy gift to Friends Council and become a member of the Evergreen Circle. One way is to set up a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA), which provides a fixed lifetime income payment for the donor. Upon death, the remainder of the gift goes to Friends Council as the designated charitable beneficiary. A CGA is an investment that supports the donor in life while also providing future support for Friends Council. We sat down with Mimsey Potts to find out why she was moved to join the Evergreen Circle by setting up a CGA on our behalf.

There are several ways to make a planned gift. Why did you decide to create a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA)?First, because Friends schools will always need support. Second, because it’s a darn good investment! Realistically, you have to see where you are in life, determine what will get you a good return, and so on. I consider this [planned gift] as part of a whole array of investments at this time in my life. I give to many good causes, but I wanted to emphasize Friends Council because I know what it takes to keep our schools going, to keep the Quaker values in place. I like the CGA because I get a nice little income from the money that I have given away. It’s a return on my investment in Friends Council, which I can enjoy now, while still leaving a long term gift to the organization I value so much.

Please consider joining Mimsey as a member of the Evergreen Circle of Friends.CGAs are one of the many ways that planned gifts can be made, including bequests, trusts, securities transfers, retirement plans, and life insurance assets. To discuss giving options, contact Friends Council, 215-241-7245. We look forward to talking with you about sustaining the vital work of Friends Council on Education.
