Helping Kids Start Healthy, Stay Healthy and Succeed in School

MATERNAL AND CH ILD HEALTH CONSORT IUM OF CHESTER COUNTY

Dear Friends,

The past year was both challenging and rewarding, as our staff worked to

meet the growing needs of low-income families in Chester County, and our

organization enjoyed some special milestones and recognitions.

• We celebrated the 15th anniversary of our Healthy Start program at our

Annual Luncheon. Our featured speaker was Polly Seitz, Director of the

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Local Funding Partnerships program, one

of our original funders. Polly noted, “MCHC is one of our success stories in

community health partnerships.”

• MCHC was awarded the GlaxoSmithKline IMPACT Award – the only

organization in the award’s history to win it three times. “All of the

GlaxoSmithKline IMPACT Award winners are leaders in the nonprofit world

and in their communities,” said Mary Linda Andrews, GlaxoSmithKline

Director of Community Partnerships.

• Our 5th Annual Mother’s Day Tea was our most successful to date, with

more than 150 women and girls attending.

• Of 366 Healthy Start infants born, 96.5% were born at a healthy weight.

We remain grateful for the support provided to MCHC from individuals,

businesses, foundations, faith groups, and other organizations across Chester

County and the region. From collecting infant care supplies, to providing

funding support for our programs, to making our Mother’s Day Tea a success,

you are all part of the impact MCHC has on families in Chester County.

Our Promise

Our ProgramsMCHC is a countywide non-profit organization working

to increase access to health, social and educational

services for low-income families. MCHC’s staff help

reduce the roadblocks to these services faced by a

growing number of Chester County families, including

language barriers, lack of health coverage, limited

access to early education, and limited public

transportation. For the past sixteen years, MCHC

has integrated emerging research and trends in

maternal and child health to ensure that all of our

county’s children have the opportunity to start healthy,

stay healthy and succeed in school.

Healthy StartHealthy Start is part of a national effort in 104

communities to improve the health and well-being

of women, infants and children. Through our

countywide program, Family Health Advocates provide

home visiting to more than 1,300 pregnant and

parenting women each year. Advocates work in the

communities where they live, developing one-on-one

relationships with enrolled women to help them have

healthy pregnancies and safe deliveries. Independent

research has found that our Healthy Start infants

are born healthier than infants from the same

communities whose mothers are not enrolled in

the program.

Healthy Start, located in Coatesville, Kennett Square,

Oxford, Phoenixville and West Chester, serves women

while they are pregnant and until their child is two

years old. Advocates provide home visits, maternal

depression screening and support, information on safe

sleeping for infants, education about prenatal nutrition

(including folic acid supplements), assistance with

accessing health insurance and health care, parenting

and prenatal health education classes (offered in

Spanish and English), and linkages to important social

services (food stamps,

WIC, domestic violence

assistance, and substance

abuse counseling). This

intensive program of support

helps each woman

overcome the barriers she

faces to obtaining care,

and helps to ensure

safe deliveries and

healthy babies.

Kennett Square Family CenterMCHC’s bilingual Parent Educators use the

evidence-based Parents as Teachers Born to

Learn™ curriculum to teach early learning

skills to children through age five. Services

provided include child developmental screenings,

home visiting, group parent-child educational

activities, parenting classes, and kindergarten

enrollment assistance.

4 Our Family Center served 102 families(many of whom had more than one child).

4 All children were screened fordevelopmental or learning delays using the Ages and Stages screening tool, and25% were found to have delays. ParentEducators connected these families toChester County Early Intervention.

4 Our Kindergarten Transition Program (KTP)graduated 19 children. KTP is an intensive, five-week summer program designed to help the Center’s 5-year-old children prepare to enroll and succeed in kindergarten.

4 Our staff teaches and assesses a list ofskills children need to have to beginschool adequately prepared, includingletter, number and shape recognition,mastery of simple tasks such as hand-washing, and understanding of size,position, and direction.

4 A grant from The Pew/OMG Center forCollaborative Learning enabled MCHC tocollaborate with a child developmentresearch team at St. Joseph’s University to create an improved evaluation toolkit to better demonstrate the Family Center’simpact on participating children.

Building the Capacity of Health Care ProvidersMCHC continued to provide Medical Interpreter

training, helping staff of area health and human

services providers improve service delivery to

Chester County’s diverse population. Our

experienced bilingual staff trained 24 local

professionals to become Spanish Language

Medical Interpreters and provide professional

interpreting services to improve client/provider

communication.

Our staff is highly knowledgeable about subsidized health

insurance programs such as Medicaid and CHIP. We

work with eligible but uninsured families to help them find

health coverage, and assist them with completing

applications (in English or Spanish). MCHC also partners

with several other community-based organizations in the

county, providing the training and support they need to

secure health insurance for their own uninsured clients.

In 2010, MCHC added the capacity to enroll hungry

families into SNAP (food stamps). MCHC now supports

13 locations countywide where families can get help

enrolling into needed benefits.

FACT: Immigrant growth in Chester County is growing faster than anywhere else in

the Delaware Valley. 2010 Census Data show that Chester County’s population grew 15%

since 2000, and the county’s Hispanic population doubled during that time and now

represents 6.5% of the county’s population.

FACT: Babies born too small or too early face lifelong health risks, including much

higher rates of heart disease, learning and developmental delays, depression, and diabetes.

FACT: More than 21,000 individuals in Chester County are enrolled into SNAP (food

stamps). This number has grown faster in recent years than any other county in the region.

FACT: African American women in Chester County are nearly twice as likely as white

women to deliver a low birth weight baby, and more than four times as likely to have their

infant die before his or her first birthday.
