The mission of My New Red Shoes is to help homeless children look and feel confident as they start the school year while raising awareness about homeless families. To achieve this goal, My New Red Shoes provides home-less children with brand new clothing and shoes. It also rallies youth and adults around this effort through volunteer and educational opportunities for individuals, families, schools, corporations and community groups.

Page 3: Annual Report 2010

Why? Children who feel good about how they look do better in school. Social science confirms that a student’s ability to dress like his or her peers directly correlates with his or her success in school. Students who feel “second-rate” based on their appearance are more likely to avoid school and perform poorly than other children. Homeless children are twice as likely to repeat a grade as other children and are at much higher risk of not attending school, ultimately increasing their chances of repeating the cycle of homelessness in the future. The lack of appropriate clothing keeps homeless children out of school. Homelessness organizations have repeatedly identified a lack of school clothing as one of the barriers to education for homeless youth. Homeless shelters don’t have the budgets to provide school clothing and shoes to their clients. By filling this need, My New Red Shoes allows part-ner agencies to focus resources on providing housing and other support services. My New Red Shoes effectively harnesses the philanthropic power of the community. Our family-friendly, customized programs and activities edu-cate individuals, families, schools, corporations and community groups about homelessness and rally them around helping homeless children start school on the right foot.

Dear My New Red Shoes,

Thank you so much for giving me shoes that I can wear to continue my dream. I value my education but also value shoes because I understand that good school shoes can bring me a long way to success.

A Simple Gift

Dear Friends, More Bay Area children experienced homelessness this past year than ever before. With your help, My New Red Shoes rose to the challenge and distributed an all-time high of 2,952 back-to-school gift bags to family shelters around the Bay Area. They were simple gifts — brand new shoes, clothing gift cards, a little “something special” like a calculator or gel pens, handwritten notes and hand-sewn gift bags — but they yielded remarkable results. Once again, we were humbled by the power of new clothing and shoes to transform discouraged, withdrawn children into confident, energetic students ready to tackle a new school year de-spite extenuating circumstances. One of the keys to My New Red Shoes’ success has always been its dedicated, energetic sup-port system. As we look to the next year, we continue to be delighted by the strength and potential of My New Red Shoes’ Board, staff and volunteer team. Coupled with an extensive and devoted network of partner agencies (in addition to the schools, corporations and com-munity groups drawn in through My New Red Shoes’ unique Community Outreach Pro-grams), our organization is poised to reach new heights in the coming year. Since our clients’ stories are the most compelling evidence of My New Red Shoes’ impact, we would like to share with you several “love letters,” photos and success stories from the homeless youth My New Red Shoes served in 2010, which you will find throughout the An-nual Report. We’re sure they will warm your heart, as they did ours. Thank you for helping empower local homeless children to arrive at school proud and ready to learn.

All our best,

Heather M. Hopkins Timi B. Most Founder and Board Co-Chair Founding Board Member and Board Co-Chair

Clothing for

Confidence

The Clothing for Confidence Program provides homeless, school-aged children with brand new shoes, a $50 clothing gift card, a little “something special“ (such as a cloth-ing accessory or school supply) and a handmade card from a local child — all in a hand-sewn gift bag. The gift bags are distributed to children in the late summer at My New Red Shoes’ hosted back-to-school parties. These gifts enable My New Red Shoes’ cli-ents to start the school year adequately dressed, confident and ready to learn. In 2009-2010, My New Red Shoes’ Clothing for Confidence Program

Served 2,952 Bay Area children, 92% of whom were homeless and 8% of whom

were from very low-income families.

Supported 68 shelters and agencies serving homeless and low-income youth in the

4 Bay Area counties of Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara.

Funneled over $221,400 of clothing and shoes into the Bay Area community.

Dear My New Red Shoes, Thank you for a pair of new shoes and the gift card. I will use it happily and I promise I will do good in school. Thank you. —Rong Dear people who gave me new shoes, Thank you for the new Converse high tops. I really needed them. My shoes were ripped and the laces were snapping and all that so anyways, thanks for donating shoes to me. — Victoria

Success Stories

Juan* is six years old and lives in a transitional housing shelter in Menlo Park. Juan and his family recently moved from Colombia and are struggling to get by as his mother finishes nursing school. Juan loved his back-to-school gift from My New Red Shoes so much that he wanted to sleep with his shoes on the night before kindergarten! The children we serve are from poor families whose second-hand clothes make their social status obvious to their peers at school. My New Red Shoes helps remove this visual stigma of poverty. —Shelter Professional

This summer, Rashelle went with her family and several others who live at a shelter in San Leandro to Old Navy to go back-to-school shopping with the clothing gift cards they re-ceived from My New Red Shoes. Once inside the store, the children erupted in joyful pande-monium. Like Rashelle, most of the children were used to sorting through second-hand clothing and had never gone to a nice store to choose brand-new school outfits. The experi-ence was special for the parents, too, whose homelessness made it very difficult to provide for their children. When Rashelle and a few of the other children spent slightly over their allotment by a dollar or two, their parents were proud to make up the difference. The delight the kids expressed in receiving their gift bags and wearing their new shoes, plus the extra treat of getting to go shop and choose something for themselves is hard to ex-press. Our kids are disconnected or displaced from their families and find it difficult to be-lieve that strangers would care enough to think of them and give them gifts – just be-cause. —Shelter Professional

12-year-old Natalie is living at a Santa Clara shelter for teens. Raised by her grandparents due to the incarceration of her mother and father, Natalie has a long record of arrests for petty theft and drug use. Since Natalie has been at the shelter, she’s been drug and alcohol free, but her case manager has noticed that Natalie’s adult-sized problems made it difficult for Natalie to feel and act like the child she is. Natalie’s behavior has changed dramatically since she went back-to-school shopping with My New Red Shoes’ clothing gift card. As her case manager watched Natalie choose and try on clothing that day, he was amazed to ob-serve age-appropriate behavior from Natalie for the first time. This simple gift has helped Natalie to be a twelve-year-old girl again as she started school this fall.

Community

Outreach

The Community Outreach Program rallies individuals, families, schools, corporations and community groups around My New Red Shoes’ mission through volunteer and educational opportunities. Its trademark Kids Helping Kids Youth Leadership Program combines service, education and philanthropy to empower students to create change for their homeless peers. In 2009-2010, My New Red Shoes

Engaged 3,200 youth through its Kids Helping Kids Youth Leadership Programs,

including 59 teens from 15 high schools participating in 4 regional Teen Advocacy

Councils, 1,539 students through the School Partnership Program, and 1,602

students through Community Engagement partnerships with groups like the Girl

Scouts.

Rallied over 1,000 volunteers for 4,600 hours in support of its mission.

Partnered with 56 community groups including corporations, social service clubs,

schools and faith-based organizations.

Raised awareness about family homelessness and gathered community support at

2 successful events: the fourth annual Walk in Their Shoes Community Parade and

Festival and the second annual Clothing for Confidence Fashion Show and Silent

Auction.

The 2010 Teen Advocacy Council brought me a greater understanding of homeless-ness that I have shared with my friends and family...I always thought you had to go somewhere far like Mexico to make a difference but now I realize how many home-less people there are in my own neighborhood and how much they could use my help. —Teen Advocacy Council Participant

Community Outreach

Success Stories

Albany High School Teen Advocacy Council participant, Kayla Nachtsheim, was so inspired by her involvement with My New Red Shoes that she organized a group of her neighbors to make holiday luminarias (paper bag lanterns) with the residents of Harrison House, their local Berkeley shelter. At the end of the day, the outdoor pathways of Harrison House and Kayla’s street were both lit with holiday cheer. This exchange allowed the shelter residents and Kayla’s neighbors to realize how much they had in common. How often does a person get the chance to help the homeless? I mean REALLY help? Well today for just a couple of hours, I worked side by side with family members and complete strangers who all had this goal in common. We all wanted to help our communities AND get a sense of the feeling that one person CAN make a difference. As a school teacher in Santa Cruz, I know how important it is for kids to feel like they fit in and are similar to their peers. Providing clothes and shoes for the homeless feels great! — Pack for Pride Volunteer

As part of their service-learning program, Menlo School’s eighth grade class arrived at My New Red Shoes’ Santa Clara NVIDIA warehouse in October with 298 pairs of donated shoes. During this full day of activities, the students learned about local fam-ily homelessness, organized the shoe inventory, sewed 73 back-to-school gift bags and made hundreds of personalized greeting cards wishing My New Red Shoes’ homeless clients a happy first day of school. My New Red Shoes’ Community Engagement Program provided a very age-appropriate presentation to the six and seven year olds in our Daisy Girl Scouts Troop. The girls lis-tened and had interesting questions throughout the meeting, which I know means they learned something that they will remember for a long time. [My New Red Shoes] was able to make the connection to homelessness for the girls in a very thoughtful manner. — Daisy Group Leader

Volunteering and being a part of the Teen Advocacy Program has been a truly empower-ing experience. I now see homelessness in a completely different light because of who I have met and the stories I have heard. I will definitely be a member of TAC again next year and I would also recommend this type of service to other students my age who want to gain and spread homelessness awareness. — Peninsula TAC Participant

Notes to the Statements

1. Organization and Operations MY NEW RED SHOES is a nonprofit public benefit corporation incorporated in March 2006. In 2006, the purpose of the organization was stated as: providing homeless and low-income chil-dren in the Bay Area with brand new clothing and shoes for the first day of school so they may greet the school year with pride, and to create a kids-helping-kids community by engaging lo-cal students in service activities and educating them about the issues of homelessness and

poverty.

2. Significant Accounting Policies Basis of presentation: The financial statements are presented in accordance with Statement of Financial Accounting Standards (SFAS) No. 117, Financial Statements of Not-For-Profit Or-ganizations. Under SFAS No. 117, MY NEW RED SHOES reports information regarding its finan-cial position and activities according to three classes of net assets: unrestricted, temporarily restricted, and permanently restricted. Fiscal year: Due to a change in the fiscal year, MY NEW RED SHOES’ 2009-2010 fiscal year was 11 months, beginning on October 1, 2009 and ending on August 31, 2010. In the future, the fiscal year will begin on September 1 and end on August 31. Revenue recognition: Contributions are recognized in full when received or unconditionally promised in accordance with SFAS No. 116, Accounting for Contributions Received and Contri-butions Made. All contributions are considered available for unrestricted use unless specifi-cally restricted by donors for future periods or specific purposes. Donor-restricted amounts are reported as increases in temporarily or permanently restricted net assets. Temporarily restricted net assets become unrestricted, and are reported in the statement of activities as release of restrictions, when the time restrictions expire or the contributions are used for the restricted purposes. Special event revenue is recognized when the related event occurs. Contributed services, materials and equipment that do not meet the criteria for recognition under SFAS No. 116 are not reflected in the financial statements. Cash and equivalents: For financial statement purposes, MY NEW RED SHOES considers all investments with a maturity at purchase of three months or less to be cash equivalents. As of August 31, 2010, MY NEW RED SHOES had $12,190.35 in short-term money market funds. Property and equipment: is recorded at initial cost and depreciated using the straight-line

My New Red Shoes Annual Report 38

Page 39: Annual Report 2010

method over estimated useful lives of 3 to 39 years. MY NEW RED SHOES’ policy is to capital-ize such items with a cost of $1,500 or more. Income taxes: MY NEW RED SHOES is publicly supported and exempt from income taxes un-der Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Inventory Valuation: Inventories consist of shoes, gift cards, shoelaces, accessories and fabric for back-to-school gift bags. Inventory is valued at the lower of cost or market. MY NEW RED SHOES determines cost using the Specific Identification Inventory Method.

3. Donated Materials and Services MY NEW RED SHOES receives support from various individuals and organizations consisting of the free use of facilities, equipment, goods and services. These in-kind goods and services par-tially defray the costs that MY NEW RED SHOES would otherwise incur for program services, fundraising, and management and general expenditures. A partial list of in-kind donated goods and services received is noted:

Shoe donations (Nike/Converse) $87,780 Volunteer services (which would otherwise have been purchased) $72,991 Gift cards $30,000 (600 $50 gift cards were donated) Fabric (P&B Textiles) $10,852 Gel Pens (Sakura Corp.) $8,979 Warehouse space (NVIDIA Corporation) $5,700 Office space (Forbes.com) $2,838 Supplies $664
