President’s Report Well done to the Kensington Baseball Club in winning back-to-back Division 1 premierships, defeang Glenelg in a highly compeve series of games. Although they were not the winners on the diamond, Glenelg are to be highly praised for their professional presentaon of the grounds and facilies.

The venue for the Capps Medal dinner and presentaon was changed a&er a number of years to the funcon room at the Morphe'ville racecourse, and was generally seen to be a successful move. Once again, Dr Roger Capps, accompanied by his wife Helene, was in a'endance to present the award to the runaway winner Todd Langman, who is to be congratulated for his win.

As we all know, death is inevitable, but this year it seems that the baseball community has seen a larger than usual loss of a number of “icons” and respected supporters of our game. Without wishing to offend the friends and relaves of those whom I miss, I menon Ron Morgan, Noel Gully, “Bere” Haynes and Don Rice in parcular, and ask that those reading this report pause and reflect on the contribuon they made to baseball. South Australians connue to be recognised naonally for their involvement in baseball both currently and in the past, and this year the following were well deserved recipients of Baseball Australia Diamond Awards. Firstly, Lorraine Dunn was acknowledged as Official of the Year, and then Tony Harris was in a 3-way e for Coach of the Year. Subsequently, our old stalwart, Norm “Chalky” White was inducted into the ABF Hall of Fame, receiving a standing ovaon from those present at the funcon. Congratulaons to these three.

Again naonally, the Adelaide Bite had great success in the inaugural season of the new Naonal League, falling at the last hurdle to the Perth Heat in the grand final. To all involved in this team’s success, players, coaches, administrators, volunteers, supporters and the local clubs a big thank you. This all helps to keep up the profile of baseball in this State, and it is pleasing to see that we connue to set benchmarks, parcularly in a'endance and sponsorship for the other States to aim at.

The weather proved to be a significant factor in the Naonal Youth Championships, causing delays and lost days. Not withstanding, our Junior State teams performed very creditably, with the Under 23’s being declared Naonal Champions. The Southern All-Stars Li'le League team then won back-to-back Naonal Championships and are now training for a trip to Guam, where a win should see them on their way to the Championships in America. An excellent effort by all teams. This, of course, brings us to the ma'er of a baseball facility in Adelaide. Whilst there are ongoing discussions about several opons, there is nothing concrete to report.

I would like to acknowledge the work of the Directors on the Board of Baseball SA who connue to work hard in their assigned roles and at the same me work together for the good of baseball in South Australia. In parcular, the new Directors have taken to their roles with an enthusiasm and objecvity which has been pleasing to see, and I thank them. Once again, the Tribunal had cause to meet on several occasions and I would like to thank them for their me and paence in handling o&en contenous ma'ers. As I write this report, it is likely that it will be my last as President of Baseball SA, as, a&er eight years, I have decided that perhaps a new face and approach is necessary, and so I do not intend to stand again. To my successor, I wish all the best and hope that he can get the same sasfacon and support from the posion as I have. It has been an honour and a privilege for me to be allowed to occupy this posion and I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge a few people who have helped me in the role, starng with my wife, Sue. Clearly, I could not have done the job without her support. Thanks also to the staff at Baseball SA who, over the years, have dealt with my requests, the three General Managers I have worked with and, finally, my predecessor, who has connued to be a sounding board and source of support.

It is with pleasure that I prepare my first annual report as General Manager.

It is an excing me for baseball in this state and naonally. Baseball connues to compete admirably with other sports in terms of increasing our parcipaon numbers both naonally and locally.

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC), based on the outcomes of the “Crawford Report”, has meant addional investment into parcipaon programs. This investment is based not only on the importance of developing a feed-er group for high performance programs, but also on the indisputable and diverse array of benefits which flow from Australians being involved in sport.

Through the hard work of the Australian Baseball Federaon, the sport of baseball has received monies to put to-wards a naonal program – with “Aussie T-Ball” to become our vehicle to increase the parcipaon numbers at the entry level of our sport. The “trick” will be to ensure we compliment this program with a transional program to increase the numbers of children into Li'le League Baseball.

This becomes crical to the growth of our clubs and the future funding for baseball in this country.

Facility Development

Baseball SA and the Board connue to work relessly to achieve a home for Baseball in this state.

Our inial applicaon for a three diamond facility to be located at States Sports Park, Gepps Cross, was not pro-ceeded with in our State Government’s 2008 budget.

Baseball SA was requested to resubmit an applicaon for a one state of the art baseball diamond, car parking, two change rooms, high tech scoring and media facilies, and an entertainment room capable of entertaining up to 120 people.

While this applicaon was not proceeded with in our State Government’s 2010 budget, we remain commi'ed to this project.

Baseball SA and So&ball SA have increased discussions with Adelaide Shores regarding a joint proposal, to upgrade So&ball SA’s exisng two diamond facility.

One diamond each for so&ball and baseball with the ability of each sport to be able to use both diamonds when hosng a championship. Both of the diamonds to be lit to television standards. Talks between the two organisaons are connuing.

Australian Baseball League – Adelaide ETSA Bite

A&er years of planning the Australian Baseball League (ABL) held their inaugural season during 2010/11 with our Team – THE ADELAIDE ETSA BITE - going all the way to the Championship Round.

Proudly supported by ETSA Ulies, our Team headed up by General Manager Pat Kelly, Assistant General Manag-er Nathan Davison and Howard Norman as Chairman of the Adelaide ETSA Bite advisory Board did our State proud on and off the Diamond.

Our crowds at Coopers Stadium were the largest in the Country and we thank you all for your support.

The Adelaide ETSA Bite Franchise was the most successful in year one of the ABL and they are not siGng sll with a tremendous lot of work sll to be done.

Congratulaons to the On Field Manager Tony Harris, his assistants and of course the players who performed magnificently over the season.

We also need make menon of the kind sponsorship of the Adelaide ETSA Bite to our Youth State teams – whichenabled us to provide playing Tops and Hats to our Players. Our teams compeng in the Youth Championships are known as the SA ETSA Bite, building on a Pathway for our Youth to aspire.

General Manager’s Report - cont’d

In excing News the Office of Baseball SA and the Office of the Adelaide ETSA Bite have moved into premises together at 3 Orange Lane Norwood.

The Board of Baseball SA sees this as a crical step in the connued growth of our game in South Australia.

High Performance

We connue to make progress with the development of our youth.

♦ Jackson Lodge and Wilson Lee signed Professional contracts with the Pi'sburgh Pirates and Joe Atkins signed a Professional contract with the Kansas City Royals.

♦ Jackson Lodge and Greg Mosel were selected for the AAA U19 Australian Team to compete at the World

Championships in Canada and alongside Head Coach Tony Harris they took home the Silver Medal.

♦ Jarryd Klemm and Nathan van der Linden were selected in the Secondary School Sport Australian Team.

♦ James Snelgrove, Ma' Scharenberg and Nico van der Linden were selected in the AA U17 Australian Team who travelled to NZ where Australia qualified for the AA U17 World Championships to be held later this year in Mexico.

♦ Dylan Ridding, from Mount Gambier, has been chosen to represent Australia at the 2011 Cal Ripken World Series.

♦ Joe Atkins, Jarryd Klemm, Nathan van der linden, Dakota Mitchell and Shaun Wright have been selected to a'end the Major League Baseball Australian Academy Program.

Our SA Bite Under 14 team won the final 6 games to finish in 3rd posion at the Naonal Championships held in Perth, while the SA Bite Under 16 and Under 18 teams had to deal with the disappointment of the Lismore Tournament being re-scheduled to April and then further disappointment of the Tournament being affected by rain – finished in 6th and equal 3rd posions respecvely.

Our Southern Adelaide Li'le League All-Stars, a&er returning from a successful trip to New Zealand, reward for winning the 2010 Australian Li'le League Championships, returned to the 2011 Australian Li'le League Championships and won it all again.

At the me of wring this report the Southern Adelaide Li'le League All-Stars are represenng Australia at the Asia Pacific Li'le League Championships – Congratulaons to all associated with the Southern Adelaide All-Stars.

During the Easter Break our Under 23 State Team returned from the Naonal Championships with the Gold Medal. To all our Execuve Officers, Coaches and Families associated with our various teams I thank you all for the me you all spend to the be'erment of our sport.

Baseball Opera*ons

Our tough decision to go with a 10 team compeon format for Senior Divisions 3 to 8 delivered many posi-ves including an improved ground allocaon and home and away format for each team and club. While we sll have a number of items to work through we are commi'ed to stay with this format for future seasons.

Our staff has had further training with the my club database and compeon management systems and this has resulted in improvements in efficiency and producvity within the office. Congratulaons to the Kensington Baseball Club on winning Back to Back Division 1 Championships.

General Manager’s Report - cont’d

Finance

It is o&en thought that Baseball SA is flush with funds due to the performance of the League over recent mes. This percepon could not be further from the truth. In fact, Baseball SA is fighng to keep its head above water in an extremely compeve environment.

Sponsorship is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain – Baseball SA would like to acknowledge the following for their support during the past season;

Coopers Brewery; COPE Sensive Transport; SIA Sports Images; Coca Cola Amal; Emmsee Sportswear; Brighton Trophy Centre; Australian Baseball Federaon; Australian Sports Commission; Major League Baseball and The Government Of South Australia.

While achieving a profit of $30,000.00 can be seen as a fine result, the ever evolving climate of increasing costs in all areas and the changing landscape of the sport means we need to find alternave income streams to relieve the financial impact on our clubs.

Staffing

Many thanks for the hard work and the support I received from the staff during my first year as General Manag-er.

Ron Harvey joined our team during the past season in the posion of Development & Coaching. Trish Hollands (Administraon Officer), Lorraine Dunn (Operaons Coordinator) and Derek Slater (Umpire Manager & Stascs) all connued in their roles from the past season.

Highlights

South Australia has a rich sporng History and in 2010 the South Australian Sporng Hall of Fame was launched.

The Baseball Community of South Australia was honoured with the news that the Late and Great Ron Sharpe from the Goodwood Baseball Club was inducted to the South Australian Sport Hall Of Fame as one of the inaugu-ral 20 inductees.

At the Baseball Australia Diamond Awards Lorraine Dunn was named Official of the Year, Tony Harris was named as a joint winner of Coach of the Year and Norm “Chalky” White was inducted to the Australian Baseball Hall Of Fame.

Finally the thank you’s

To the previous Chief Execuve Officer Paul Begg many thanks for your support during my me as the Develop-ment Manager and during my transion into the role of General Manager.

To the SABL President Kevin Jennings and the Board thanks for the confidence shown in me and your total sup-port.

To all the Club Commi'ee Members, Players, Volunteers, Umpires, Scorers and Supporters, my thanks for the many hours of reless support you give to the game of baseball.

Paul Chandler

General Manager

Footnote – Since the wring of this report Kevin Jennings announced he was stepping down a&er 8 years as the President of the SABL. The sport of Baseball in SA thanks you Kevin for your leadership and the sport of Baseball in SA is certainly in a be'er posion for it.

I would like to thank Lorraine Dunn for her reless work. Lorraine had to not only deal with the usual addions and withdrawal of teams once the compeon had started but also work within the requests of the Adelaide Bite season. I would like to thank all of those hard working club members who have given of their me to a'end the Opera-on’s meengs where we reviewed playing condions and other playing items. These are the people who have the toughest job in baseball and provide the ideas, inspiraon and suggesons to make our game progress. This season meengs were quite different to recent years, and I was determined to be the line of communica-on to the Board. I believe that this was successful and well received by the clubs and should be connued in the future. Inially there was a great deal of frustraon but at the end we achieved a posive model that will lead to some changes being implemented.

A connual agenda item and a source of frustraon was the topic of the number of games played in a season. I agree totally that the more games that we play the be'er product and standard we can offer. Realiscally this is a no win situaon. We cannot extend the season to create more games because of ground sharing arrangement that dictate to our clubs. This leads to double headers and twilight fixtures that are not always popular and place huge demands on club personnel. The answer of course is our own ground and the ability to run midweek fixtures that will increase games that will increase game numbers for all age groups Umpiring connues to be a major focus because of dwindling numbers. This problem was outlined to the clubs and a soluon explained. I would hope that all clubs embraced this scheme and support Baseball SA and BUASA’s plan. The plan has a great deal of merit but will not succeed without full club support and the request-ed idenficaon of club members to undergo the umpire training. The new transfer system was a success in that it allowed for player movement. Some minor adjustments will be put in place by next season to allow for compensaon to those clubs who lose players. Baseball SA is keen to ensure the success of the Adelaide Bite in the naonal league as it will provide a baseball profile and promoon of our game and provide a pathway for our aspiring players and coaches. In saying this I wish also to congratulate the home grown talent that despite an arduous season never wavered in their desire to represent their club to ensure the strength of our local compeon. FINANCE REPORT

The finances of Baseball SA connue to be managed well internally with a keen eye on the outstanding debtors with regular payments received on their due date or close to this. We are connuing to monitor outgoing payments under the check and balance system set up by the CEO and myself. Payments over the prescribed amount are cross checked and approved for periodic payment.

PROFIT:

As the set of accounts reflect, this year Baseball SA has produced a net profit for the second year in a row and is a pleasing result considering a loss reported two years ago of some $40,000.

EXPENDITURE:

Whilst exceeding budget, this year’s expenditure is in line with previous year’s results and will connue under scruny by CEO and Financial Director.

DEBTORS:

It is pleasing to note that our outstanding debtors list has been worked upon with a view to securing the amounts owed ,with parcular a'enon to those with schemes of arrangement. A review process is currently under way to minimise long term outstandings.

OVERVIEW:

Baseball SA is in a good financial posion , the year saw the rebirth of the naonal compeon which drew good crowds through the gate. The state government’s decision to restructure the SASI program will see a new direcon for the sport in this state, with funding yet to be finalised.

Coaching & Development Manager’s Report

Development of the sport at a junior level connues to remain priority of not only Baseball SA but the Australian Baseball Federaon. This development plan provides a framework to Increase the quanty of baseball players in South Australia through the implementaon of the following strategic iniaves:

♦ Aussie T-Ball to schools and clubs.

♦ Coach development.

♦ Volunteer development.

♦ Further development and delivery of programs for women’s baseball.

♦ Provide development officers with training, strategic planning development seminars and daily support as re-quired.

Baseball SA has been striving to ensure that the product we are promong to potenal parcipants is a'racve, well-structured and administered. This was connually achieved across many areas throughout the past season. The goals for the development team remain high, and this has led to a number of highlights throughout the season.

♦ The introducon of an Aussie T-Ball group has given South Australia a strong plaRorm on which to not only build Aussie T- Ball in clubs and schools but to provide a sound pathway and link from T- Ball to clubs. This will connue to grow with the news that the Department of Sport and Recreaon has approved a $40,000 grant for T -Ball development.

♦ School Clinics - a range of formats for metropolitan and regional schools to select that best suit their needs, whilst sll maximizing promoon and the potenal for recruitment.

♦ The connued success of our Li'le League teams to compete at a naonal level and the ever decreasing gap between our Li'le League Regions.

♦ The Colts development programs that will this year link with Bob Williams and the Goodwill team to host a touring development team that will parcipate in an internaonal tournament in California.

♦ Our Youth State Teams have met with success with our under 23 team naonal champions and our underage teams winning two bronze medals. We are connually providing a structure that will allow the most talented coaches to work with the most talented players in an environment that is conducive to success.

♦ Training with the Pros was a resounding success again this year to such a degree that Adelaide will need to program this event over two days cope with the number of children wishing to parcipate spiraling

♦ Upwards.

Page 17: ANNUAL REPORT 2010 - 11 · 2010/11 Coopers Division 1 Grand Final 24 2010/11 Capps Medal Evening ... Capps, accompanied by his wife Helene, was in a'endance to present the award to

17

This year’s Junior Medal Presentaon, Baseball SA's evening to recognize the most talented players in the com-peon was a huge success. The event was well supported, with all clubs having at least one representave in the Top Ten of a division. Congratulaons to all award winners on the night. Season 2011-12 is looming as one that offers many opportunies in the area of development. Clubs in a partner-ship with Baseball SA must support the parents who invest me and money in their children to ensure we pro-vide the very best teaching standards. This can only be achieved by all baseball people embracing the “Spirit of Australia” document and that all coaches seek to improve their baseball knowledge by pursuing the appropriate coaching accreditaon that is linked to coaching age groups. The new accreditaon scheme is certainly more user friendly and less inmi-dang. I would like to express my sincere appreciaon to the staff and Board of Directors at Baseball SA for their sup-port of me and my role. I would like to thank all of the volunteer coaches who have made a significant impact upon the area of development, parcularly through the Schools Program, Acve A&er School Program and T-Ball in South Austral-ia. The efforts of our casual coaching staff go generally unseen, however they must be acknowledged. Congratu-laons must also go to the heart and soul of the sport. Without the intense and passionate commitment made by the thousands of volunteers in the baseball community across the state, all of what we strive to achieve would be in vain. The past 12 months have certainly been a busy me for the Development Department at Baseball SA but I can assure you that the next twelve months will be even more hecc. Our School Clinic program will take on a new look as we take on the Aussie T -Ball program with the number of students visited over the year increasing sig-nificantly. In addion to our metropolitan clinics, Baseball SA has also been to many regional areas. We were pleased to parcipate in, and connue to support, the Australian Sports Commission's Acve A&er Schools Communies Program. This iniave creates strong relaonships between local primary schools and Clubs, whilst also exposing many new children to the game of T-Ball and Baseball. With the funding received by Baseball SA to develop and pro-mote the game of T-Ball, my porRolio at Baseball SA now includes Aussie T -Ball and Aussie All Stars Development, whereby my main objecve for the next 12 months is to obtain registraon details of all parcipants, thus enabling Baseball SA to track players over future years, to create and implement a unified set of playing rules, whilst also assisng clubs and associaons with their needs. This needs to be done as funding in the future will be linked to numbers. It is therefore imperave that all clubs support this by updang and ensuring all data on “My Club” is up to date and accurate.

Youth Operations Report

Another season of Youth baseball has ended and with some Great success at the Naonal level this past season. Hard work and effort have paid off with great rewards.

The SA Li'le League team (Adelaide Southern All Stars) did a repeat! They won this year’s Naonal Champion-ships at the Surfer’s Paradise Baseball Club -as well as last year! Congratulaons to Burke Weber and whole team. Well Done and Good Luck this year in Guam for the Asia Pacific Championships – and, then, Williamsport!

We had another success on the Naonal stage with our Under 23 team being crowned Naonal Champions a&er a rain disrupted Easter Championship in Sydney. Well Done to all!

Many thanks to General Manager, Paul Chandler, Development Manager, Ron Harvey, and all Coaching staff for their input, support and implementaon of Youth Programmes at all age levels this past year. Our Development Manager again issued feedback surveys to State players, conducted reviews with the coaching teams and gained valuable feedback for next season.

The SASI Baseball programme, under Warwick Marks, again, underpinned the development of the Elite Youth in this state. Unfortunately the programme will conclude in June 2012 due to funding issues with the SA Govern-ment.

Baseball SA, the ABF and SASI Management are working hard to ensure smooth transion of an Elite Youth Pro-gram managed by the ABF and Baseball SA. Details will be released in the near future on how the new program will operate.

Off Season Programmes and Winter Baseball lead to-wards player tryouts and selecon of the various age-based State teams and the commencement of the local compeon in October. Early selecon and finalizaon of the teams is sll the emphasis so players, parents and all pares knew what their commitment is. This sll remains a priority.

State teams, once selected, competed against our visitors from the USA at the Woodville Baseball Club. The Annual Goodwill Series in December connues to be a great success and an important warm up Series before the Naonal Championships the following month.

Teams parcipated and through the generosity of our baseball families, all USA players were billeted and welcomed into their homes. The Series sll provides valuable informaon for our coach’s and great experi-ence for the players prior to the Naonals. Thank you to all families, volunteers, scorer’s, umpires and officials who gave up their valuable me to ensure the series went well again. Thanks again to all at the Woodville Baseball Club. Well done! The U14 State team headed off to Perth for their Championship games in January. The U14 team had some success and just missed out on playing off for the championship by a narrow margin. Well done to the Coaches and Players.

The U16 and U18 State teams were combined again to play at the same venue this year. They were to play in Lismore in January, but unfortunately, Lismore kept its reputaon up for rainfall. As a result, the games were postponed before the teams le& for NSW due to the rain and flooding and re-scheduled unl later in the year.

The revamped U16 and U18 State teams eventually trav-elled to Lismore in April, 2011 with the U18 State team finishing Third and the U16 State team a li'le down the list. It was a great effort considering the disrupted pro-gram. Congratulaons to all Players, Coaches, Execuve Officers, Scorers, Umpires and parents for their support and commitment under some very trying circumstances this past year. This delay has caused some further disrupon for our prepa-raons for this coming summer which has since been addressed.

The revamped U16 and U18 State teams eventually travelled to Lismore in April, 2011 with the U18 State team finishing Third and the U16 State team a li'le down the list. It was a great effort considering the disrupted program. Congratulaons to all Players, Coaches, Execuve Officers, Scorers, Umpires and parents for their support and commitment under some very trying circumstances this past year. This delay has caused some further disrupon for our preparaons for this coming summer which has since been addressed.

The Youth Season had its usual summer break while the State series were played and recommenced at the end of January heading to the finals in March. No Twilight games were held these past seasons which again limited the rounds. Feedback already received indicates that 16 games are not enough and not value for money. Twenty games appear to be the minimum Youth fixtures to program when and where possible.

Once again, due to the late team nominaons, the programming in each Youth age group and Division connue to hold us back with efficient, early program release. Our website has been helpful in advising of team changes and, consequently, game mes and venues.

Baseball SA Youth Club Delegates meengs provided a valuable resource for the League and the Club Delegates. The Development Manager was able to present seminars and informaon from various agencies to assist baseball in the development and understanding of programmes that support our clubs and the game.

Interacon between Club Youth Delegates and Club Operaons Delegates is sll extremely important. Please connue to communicate. Thank you to all Youth Club Delegates for giving up their me and making the effort to support and develop youth baseball as your input and work at your Club is extremely valuable.

In addion to our Youth State teams, we would also acknowledge our Li'le League programme and our representave teams. Well done and thanks to all for your support.

We also want to acknowledge our Schoolboys team who played in Cairns on the Naonal stage represenng South Australia. Two of our players were nominated to the Secondary School Australian All Star Team. Thank You for the effort and support to these teams.

Congratulaons to all the winners of our SA Youth Championship teams in all age groups together with

the various Youth Medal winners. All were presented at the extremely successful Junior Medal Night held again at the Woodville Town Hall. The Baseball SA staff did another fantasc job puGng on this event again. Well done. Thank you also to all the presenters who made me to a'end the event and present their Medals in the various leagues.

Thank you to all the Baseball SA staff, President Kevin Jennings, General Manager Paul Chandler and the Board for the support, interacon and direcon during the season, especially with the recent move to share facilies with the Adelaide ‘BITE’ management.

Thank you, also, to our Affiliated Associaons, Scorers, Umpires and SA Country Baseball for their support this past season. Your contribuons are well appreciated as always. The new ABL got underway in November 2010 a&er a fantasc effort last season from our Claxton Shield team. It was all we expected and more. Our team, the BITE, took us to the Championship game in Perth inning the first game, but unfortunately fell short two games to the one.

Congratulaons to PK, Nathan, Tony and the Team for a great first season. We had the best crowd a'endances and the best venue in the country. Good work, Fellas!

Is your Club geared up for the influx of juniors that will want to play the game once exposed to the ABL and the new Aussie T-Ball programme?

More excing mes are ahead. Are you excited? We are.

Reflecng back on season 2010/11 there are a number of posives from U23 Gold medal to BITE playoffs in Perth to the Li'le League winning Australian Champs. With MLB signings, College scholarships and new players to our sport, the 2011/12 looks poised to take a step further into posive territory. I would like to congratulate Kensington BC for their Div. 1 premiership and Todd Langman for his Capps Medal win. I would also like to congratulate all Clubs, volunteers, supporters and parents for contribung to the sport in SA striving forward. And of course Scorers and Umpires for their thankless contribuon. The responsibilies of the porRolio were Memorabilia – this without doubt a integral part of the tradion, history and where our game was born from and probably sits with a heritage commi'ee to ensure that it is protected and promoted correctly. Masters Baseball – The 13 AMG to be held at 3 grounds this year, West Torrens, Glenelg and Woodville has a'racted many players from all around the country, some intent on playing for the social aspect and catching up with old mates and foes. Others on the other hand are just into rerement and will no doubt bring their compeveness to the ballpark. There will be copious liniment, strapping and support used to face up day a&er day over the tournament. In the end the winner will be the sport. Baseball Hall of Fame - SA Baseball Hall of Fame inducted Ronald “Maxy” Sharpe. Baseball Australia Hall of Fame inducted Norm “Chalky” White. Both join a presgious and elite range of players, the Board once again congratulates their inducons. The last 2 roles of this porRolio unfortunately don’t exist any longer (Max Pucket All Star and Legends Game, and Adelaide Bank All Star Team). I have been able to offer assistance to other areas of SABL, in planning, finance, strategic and development and must say I am looking forward to an excing 2011/12 season. In closing I would like to wish our out going President all the very best, it has been a pleasure to work with you albeit for only one year. I am sure Kevin will remain very acve within our sport.

Baseball Program

The 2010/11-scholarship year has been extremely successful with 7 athletes offered scholarships to the Australian Academy in 2010 and another 5 to the 2011 Academy. Three athletes to College and seven selected to represent their country and three Pro signing. A lot of thanks must go to the support staff at SASI especially the strength and condioning staff who instructed, tested and pushed the athletes throughout the year geGng the best out of each individual. I would also like to recognise the tremendous input from my assistant coaches Lawrie Moore, Mark Haylock, Jusn Clark, Ken Kobayashi and returning graduates.

2010/2011

2011/2012

Core Values/Principles

“Commitment to excellence, to time, to Baseball”.

Objectives

To provide the necessary program for SASI athletes to reach their maximum poten*al in the physical, psychologi-

cal, personal and technical.

To provide SASI athletes and coaches with the maximum possible support in terms of sports science and research. To provide the necessary support systems to maximise SASI athletes’ ability to perform at their highest level in com-

petition and training. Once again our main focus was to increase speed, arm strength, fundamentals and overall conditioning. Education in, drugs in sport, time management, driver education, nutrition and sports psychology. The athletes worked three days a week indoor (hitting and pens), outdoor (fielding and defensive work), plus in the gym under the supervision of the Head Coach, gym staff and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Todd Cece. SASI also offers its facilities and back up support to the professionals and college players when they are back in Aus-tralia. This helps them to prepare for any National representation and their next professional season and college sea-son. LITTLE LEAGUE REPORT

The Adelaide Southern All Stars Li'le League Baseball team won the right to represent South Australia at the Naonal Li'le League Championships on the Gold Coast by defeang the Adelaide Northern All Stars 2-1 in a three game series held at Glassey Park in Berri on Saturday 16 (Double Header) and Sunday 17 April, 2011. Trainings this year were held at Seaton High School only for a limited me due to prior bookings, Glenelg Baseball Club on Monday evenings unl dark and then again on Saturdays. We would like to thank the Glenelg Baseball Club for allowing us to use their great facilies. When the weather did not allow us to train we ventured to Woodlands Indoor Cricket Centre on Cross Roads. With trainings completed we gathered at the Adelaide Airport on Wednesday May 25 2011 for our trip to the Gold Coast. Upon our arrival at Coolanga'a Airport, we had to borrow one of the Illawarra’s vans as one of our vans had been cancelled. We had a quick bite to eat and then ventured to the Surfer’s Paradise Baseball Club for a familiarisaon visit and a stretch and throw. A&er training we headed back to Tallebudgerra our home for the next four days for the inducon to our accommodaon. The boys were buzzing with excitement as our first game was 8.00am the next morning. The early start was due to us having to play double headers for the next three days. Thursday 26 May: Game Day arrived and the Adelaide Southern All Stars started well with a win against Alice Springs 16-1. In the a&ernoon we played Brisbane South and suffered our first defeat going down 5-6. Friday 27 May: Now having to win all games and a later start to the day our first game was against Perth Metro North and they were the team to beat. A&er a wake up call yesterday the boys performed well and defeated Perth Metro North 5-1. Our second game was against Illawarra and we were victorious 15-4. Saturday 28 May: Another early start and sll having to win our last game to make the finals we came up against Ringwood last years runners up. À tough game was ahead for us and came out victorious 10-6 and a top spot of our pool and a semi final berth against Cronulla North. With a grand final berth in sight we returned to Tallebudg-erra and a warm down in the river in preparaon for the game against Cronulla North in the a&ernoon. The boys played a faultless game and defeated Cronulla North in 4 innings 11-1. Sunday 29 May: With the grand final in the a&ernoon against Perth Metro North we had a relaxing morning with a late breakfast and a game of Pu'-Pu'. The start to our game was delayed due to the game before us going into extra innings. The boys were relaxed and ready to go. The game was a dual of pitching with both pitchers pitching nearly all of the game. Going into the bo'om of the sixth innings ed at 1-1 we had loaded bases with one out Coach Weber decided to bunt one of our big hi'ers. The bunt went foul by twelve inches. With the opposion sll back Coach Weber puts the bunt signal on again and this me it was put into play and the winning run was scored and victory was ours 2-1. Back to back championships and look out Guam here we come for the Asia Pa-cific Championships in July.

In game 1 we faced off against a very strong NSW side, in what turned out to be a run fest. At mes during this game we trailed by 7 runs, led by 5 runs and then needed 3 outs in the bo'om of the 7th to win the game. Unfortunately we could not hold NSW out and they scored the winning runs – final score 17-16. Mason Pickard led the way with 4 hits and Josh Loechel-Baker with 6 RBI.

Game 2 we came up against a red hot WA and lost 20-1. They came out swinging and scored 4 in the first and conn-ued on from there. Tournament Baseball is full of unusual score lines so we learnt from this game and kept a posive aGtude going into game 3.

Game 3 vs. Country NSW and ran out convincing winners 12-4. This me we scored 4 runs in the first inning and kept the pressure on them for the enre game. An outstanding performance from our pitchers – Ma' Hutchings, Jack Parngton and Ryuji Hamano who only allowed 1 BB between them. Mason Pickard and Josh Loechel-Baker again led the hiGng with 3 hits a piece.

Game 4 vs. Vic White. Won 8-4. An excellent start by Mitch Duval on the hill kept us in the game in the early innings. Our bats came alive in the la'er innings and we ran out winners in a ght ball game. Ma' Taylor led the way with 3 hits including a HR.

Game 5 vs. QLD. Won 12-10. A ght ball game which in the end came down to the strength of our bull pen. Sam

McGarry and Charlie Goldsworthy threw 4 innings of relief only allowing 1 earned run between them. Ma' Taylor and

Troy Nicholson led the way collecng 3 hits each

Game 6 vs. Vic Blue. Won 4-0. This was always going to be a tough ball game as the Vics had beaten WA the day be-

fore. In what turned out to be a ght affair, we came out and scored 3 runs in the first. From there our pitchers were

nothing short of outstanding – Ma' Hutchings 4ip 0bb 0er, Marcus Rose 2ip 0bb 0er, Declan Richter 1ip 0bb 0er. These

figures speak for themselves. Ma' Taylor was again our best hi'er with 2 hits.

Game 7 vs. Territory. Won 9-4. The last minor round game which we had to win to give ourselves an opportunity to play off for medals. Tyson Hancock started for us and had a great oung – 3.1ip 1bb 0er. A solid performance with most of hi'ers producing – Ma' Taylor and Ryuji Hamano each had 3 hits and Troy Nicholson picked up 2.

Playoff game vs. Qld. Won 7-6. We had finished the minor round in 3rd spot but needed to win this game to win the Bronze medal. In what was a duel of the best 2 U14 pitchers in the country – Declan Richter from SA and Louis Baker from QLD the game was a beauty. Ma' Taylor hit a massive bomb in the first inning to kick start our offence and from there the game see-sawed right to the end. QLD had a 2 run lead going into the last inning and needed 3 outs to beat us. Troy Nicholson hit a lead off double to start the inning, Mason Pickard and Charlie Goldsworthy both had RBI singles and then we scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Declan Richter showed in this game why he is arguably the best U14 pitcher in Australia – 5ip 0bb 2er. Charlie Goldsworthy came on in relief and threw 2 innings for 1er. Ma' Taylor, Charlie Goldsworthy and Josh Loechel-Baker each had 2 hits.

We missed out on playing off for the Gold Medal by that 1 run loss in game 1 vs. NSW. An outstanding tournament by our players and watch out for this group over the next few years – we have some outstanding talent coming through. Our MVP for the tournament was Ma' Taylor. He led our hiGng with a .571 baGng average, 16 hits, 13 rbi. Thanks to my assistant coaches – Damian Hutchinson and James Henty, our EO Mark McGarry and our scorer Enza Henty.

Darren Bromley – Coach.

UNDER 16 STATE TEAM REPORT

Well it took three extra months, but we finally got to Lismore for the 2011 Naonals. As no doubt the greater majority of the baseball community know, the original me-slot in January was cancelled two days before we were due to depart due to the flood warnings in far northern New South Wales area.

It all started way back in September last year, as 3 tryouts were to be held (including trial games on the final weekend). The first week was washed out and that put us back a week, and due to the weather, we had to play the trial games on the AFL Grand Final day. All players/parents and guardians were informed that a squad of 25 (from a list of 47) was to be picked a&er the final trial games to be trained for a further 3 weeks, before the final team of 18 with 2 emergencies was selected.

There are obviously athletes that are disappointed that don’t progress further at this stage and I say to them and their par-ents/guardians in every other year like this one, that we can’t pick everyone, and due to team balances, some athletes are unlucky to miss out. In my opinion speaking from experience, it only makes the athlete want to work harder to achieve this goal of represenng your state, and to achieve any goal at anything in life they wish to pursue.

The final selected team trained 2 days a week during Nov/Dec in the lead -up, and I must say once the original tournament was cancelled, although the team was all round disappointed that we were not going, they kept their focus for another 3 months unl we got on that plane and finally arrived in Lismore.

Once we arrived we went straight to the grounds to have a look, and I must say it didn’t look good as 3 of the 4 ouRields had sca'ered pools of water everywhere, but once the ground crews were able to access and work on them, we were up and running and with a clear day of nothing but sunshine on the opening day, the tournament finally got underway.

We lost to NSW in the opener, then faced a VIC blue team that bombarded us and showed they meant business by hiGng the long ball, in a game quite frankly, I sll somemes shake my head about (for those who were there watching you know what I mean). This followed with a tough win against eventual runners-up WA, a mercy rule win in 75mins against Territo-ries and a come from behind win against NSW country. A ght loss to VIC White followed which meant a final round robin game against QLD with the winner having an advantage by finishing in the top four , and the loser finishing in the bo'om half.

Although the tournament was finally restructured to allow any to sll win the championship a&er the round robin stage, we were over-run by the eventual champions QLD, and finished in the bo'om group to start the second round. Then the heavens opened up a&er a week of great weather. We beat NSW Country in a game in my opinion we should have never started, tried to complete the next day’s game against Territories in which we had eventually called off when scores where level and the next scheduled day against VIC White was a washout even before we had breakfast. This meant our tournament was officially over, due to the back log of games and days le& that made it impossible for games to be made up. We beat NSW Country again for the 3rd me in probably the most entertaining and ght contest that we played on the final day to end the tournament.

In closing I would like to thank the following people for all the assistance that I was being given in this opportunity: Assistant Coaches: Travis Curyer, Stuart Millar and Michael Sharp. Michael unfortunately had to withdraw before the tour-nament due to work commitments.

Execuve Officer: Mark Snelgrove. Mark’s overall planning and professionalism leading up to and when we were away was

outstanding, and I made recognion of his efforts at our team dinner the parents/guardians while we were away.

Ron Harvey, Paul Chandler, Lorraine Dunn and Trish Hollands from the SABL office. Peter Gee: for the usage of Seaton High School’s facility. West Torrens, Port Adelaide and GGCD for the usage of their grounds for tryouts/games and training.

Congratulaons to: Ma'hew Scharenberg & Nathan Meinck for being named joint MVP’s of the team. Ma'hew Scharenberg for selecon in the tournament’s All-Star team. Ma'hew Scharenberg and Shaun Wright for being offered ABF/MLB Academy scholarships. Ma'hew Scharenberg, James Snelgrove and Nico Van derLinden on being selected to the Australian AA Oceania team to New Zealand (pre-tournament). Finally to the team and their parents/guardians for an extended journey that was most enjoyable. See you on the diamond,

Mark Chandler

UNDER 18 STATE REPORT Well we all told you so it rained and rained again in Lismore, what a shambles the tournament was as we lost five days play at the end of the tournament and keeping 18 under age youths happy on each rain out day was no mean task. We le& on the 9th April with a party of 18 players for a 12 day championship which was going to be hard with the new restricons placed on player parcipaon and one less player available from last years tournament (19). We assembled at the Adelaide Airport in good spirits which lasted for several days as we could play baseball. At the closing of the seventh day we were four a&er the first round and where ready to play the next round of games which would have lead to the finals. But this was not to happen as it Rained and Rained again. The tournament was even shi&ed one day to the Gold Coast which was an hour and a half away by bus and a&er geGng all the team up at 5-30 am for a 9 o’clock game we where advised at 6-30 am that both grounds on the Gold Coast and also at Lismore were rained out and no play was able to be conducted for the day. A&er all efforts to play again without success we were fourth and awarded a joint bronze medal whilst the top two teams played off for the Gold and Silver Medals. Congratulaons to Joe Atkins and Jarryd Klemm who were named in the All Star Team.

UNDER 23 STATE REPORT

This year the under 23 Tournament was held in Sydney for the second year in a row with Brian Cakebread as coach and Ron Harvey as assistant coach. We travelled with a party of 18 players and invited 4 Pitchers from New South Wales to join the Team to bolster the Pitching Staff and bring the number of players up to 22. These four players undertook their roles very well and helped the team when required in their pitching roles. The team was short of South Australian Players and many did not wish to try out for the tournament which is in some way very disappoinng and it is a stepping stone to higher teams and club “A” grade compeon. We le& on Good Friday and then played the next three days and played five games. The team won 4 and lost one and on the fourth and fi&h day the rain interrupted play and the tournament was abandoned at that stage and the South Australians were awarded the Gold Medal from Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales. For the first me this year New Zealand fielded a team and were very compeve and I understand New Zealand will be a'ending next year’s tournament here somewhere in Australia. The team stayed at the Travel Lodge Blacktown which was only 8 minutes from the Blacktown Olympic Park ground which was handy for travel to and from the venue. A special menon must be made to the players from South Australia who were picked in the All Star Team. Joe Atkins as Catcher, Sonny Beaumont as OuRield, and James Young as the Designated Hi'er . BUASA President’s Report Prior to the start of the season we lost one of our favourite members in Michael Peacock. He was very well known and respected not only in South Australia, but also all around the country. His streak of consecuve naonal tournament appearances will be hard to beat. Also this season we lost another long term member of BUASA in Bert Haynes.

The season started with our umpiring numbers slightly down on last season and with the return of the ABL, it would be another commitment that would take our umpires away from the local league. During those ABL weekends, many umpires were given the opportunity to test their skills by umpiring higher divisions.

Whilst on the ABL, the four umpires in Andrew Bell, Neil Poulton, Mark Wilson and I did a great job in han-dling the addional pressures of a naonal league. Congratulaons to Neil Poulton for being selected to umpire the Grand Final series in Perth, in which Adelaide narrowly missed the tle again.

Unfortunately the weather postponed the Under 18 and Under 16 tournaments in Lismore in January. When they were eventually held in April, Mark Wilson represented us admirably, narrowly missing out on selecon for the plate in the Gold Medal game. Unfortunately, whilst Daniel Cotar was inially selected to represent us at Lismore, he was unavailable, so Paul Haynes stepped up and performed well at his first jun-ior naonal tournament. John Tretola also a'ended his first junior naonal tournament, making the long trip to Perth for the Under 14s.

At the conclusion of the SABL season, Fred Halligan represented us at the Provincial Championships in Syd-ney which were held concurrently with the Under 23s tournament, which Peter Ditrich a'ended.

Recently, Payne Sowter was exposed to the tournament experience by a'ending the Li'le League Champi-onships held on the Gold Coast. Reports back indicate that he could have a long and fruiRul umpiring career ahead of him. There were a number of major milestones reached by our members this season. Most notable was the reaching of his 1000th SABL game by Fred Halligan. Paul Haynes connues to rack up the games, as he um-pired the most SABL games again this season.

A big thank you and congratulaons goes to Kym Smith as the worthy recipient of the Claude Pearce Memo-rial Award for his outstanding and dedicated contribuon to the Associaon by ensuring everyone was kept up to date with the latest happenings in the umpiring world.

Congratulaons also to Neil Poulton and Fred Halligan for being selected as the umpires in the Baseball SA All-Star Team. It was a pleasant surprise for me to be awarded the Paul Begg Umpire of the Year Award.

It was decided that our Umpire’s Umpire award, which was previously nameless, was to be named in the memory of Michael Peacock as he embodied all that this award stands for. The first recipient of the Michael Peacock Umpires Choice Award was Mark Wilson.

Unfortunately this season was marred with some incidents, most involving abuse of our umpiring fraternity. It makes our job extremely hard to a'ract and retain our umpires when people in the baseball community believe that it is their right to abuse an umpire for simply doing their job. I hope that what appears to be a decline in respect shown to umpires will reverse. Baseball in South Australia can only be as strong as its weakest link and I believe that we all need to work together to achieve connuing success in this state.

BUASA President’s Report cont’d Unfortunately this season was marred with some incidents, most involving abuse of our umpiring fraternity. I hope that what appears to be a decline in respect shown to umpires will reverse. Baseball in South Australia can only be as strong as its weakest link and I believe that we all need to work together to achieve connuing success in this state.

I am grateful of the relaonship we have with Baseball SA, as we’re working together during the off-season to ensure there are necessary policies in place to protect all people involved in the game and to help improve the sport here in South Australia.

Given the trend of declining umpire numbers, it occurred more and more last season that our members were requested to work by themselves for Division 1 and 2 games. Doing these games by yourself at that level is extremely difficult. However, in another iniave in partnership with Baseball SA, we intend to train a couple of members within each club to a sufficient standard that they can assist our members in umpiring Division 1 and 2 games.

I would like to thank the remainder of the Commi'ee for their hard work this season. They are a great bunch of guys and I believe we have built up a great momentum that I would like to see connue.

I look forward to the coming season, not just to as a parcipant with some of my mates, but also to the enjoyment of having the best seat in the house for the greatest game in the world. Blake Halligan

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN BASEBALL

SCORERS ASSOCIATION

President’s Report 2010/2011

The 2010/2011 season saw the inclusion of the Under 23 tournament as an ABF sanconed tournament and another opportunity for our scorers to parcipate at a Naonal level. The Under 14 compeon was held in WA in January & Enza Henty had the opportunity at her first naonal tournament as an Official. The Under 16 & 18 compeon scheduled for January in Lismore, NSW was postponed due to inclement weather and re-scheduled for April and Pauline Sharp & myself officiated at this tournament. Lorraine Dunn parcipated at Blacktown, NSW for the Under 23 tournament which was run inially with the Australian Provincials.

2010/2011 Naonal Tournament with the Australian Baseball League commenced with the launch of the Official Naonal teams which now include ACT & the newly named SA team; Adelaide Bite. This involved a larger commitment for our volunteer officials from previous years with approx. 20 home games; schedules included Wednesday evenings, Thursday morning & Sunday evenings as well as the usual double header on Saturdays and addional make up games that had been postponed due to inclement weather. Steve Eads was a constant as the delegated IT official conversing with someone from the MLB in New York via predetermined ‘shorthand’ record of the game; thank you Steve. The SABSA agreed to use the opportunies to expose as many scorers as possible by having a panel of 3 which included the IT role. This was shared between Lorraine, Jo, Pauline, Linda F, Pam, Sue, Deirdre & myself; thank you.

Lorraine Dunn was the SABSA Scorer organising the official scorers for the series and sincere thanks for coordinang the panel of 3 for each game.

Ben Foster, was our contact with the ABL and we were in contact via emails & telephone depending on the informaon or concern that arose.

Woodville again hosted the Goodwill Series and thank you to Enza Henty, for her organisaon of the scorers for these games. It is a wonderful opportunity for scorers, parcularly those who have completed level 1 & level 2 accreditaon to gain some valuable experience.

The aim of the associaon is to connue the encouragement of parcipaon in the game of baseball by way of scoring; scoring to a Naonally recognised standard set by CABS. 2010/2011 was no different with club delegates conducng Level 0/Beginner clinics and Associaon members conducng clinics at Levels 1, 2 and 3 at Baseball SA. Those parcipang in the Level 1 & 2 clinics completed a theory and praccal exam to gain a CABS accredita-on, a total of 15 interested scorers, giving their me over several weeks. We can confirm we have an addional 9 Level 1, 5 Level 2 & 1 Level 3 scorer within our Associaon; and at the finals 2 Level 2IT scorers completed this accreditaon. As the requirement by CABS is to have a further 12 months praccal experience once passing level 1, each is able to parcipate and sit the theory & exam for Level 2 accreditaon next season. Level 2 accredita-on allows scorers to score at Division 1 & 2 level. Our aim is to encourage many more to further extend their skills & knowledge to a'ain Level 3 which will allow them to score at a naonal level and with the expansion of the Naonal Tournament and the inclusion of scorers as a part of the team it gives members opportunies to do this. A huge thank you to Steve & Lorraine for coordinang & supervising these clinics & exams.

Lorraine Dunn, as a CABS Technical Commissioner and Steve Eads & myself a'ended the CABS/Australian Baseball Federaon Train the Trainer Workshops over a weekend in July – this is an intense training/informaon session for all scorers where 2 from each state are invited to a'end. It is unclear whether this will remain in the same format or if the ABF may look at other opons. There was concern expressed by the ABF that it was always the same 2 from each state; as a state we ask 2 members to a'end and ask they do so for 2 years; some states have been sending the same 2 delegates for many years.

This season we had a few more members able to input data for the Division 1 and this helped to ‘spread the load’; thank you to Pauline, Steve, Lorraine & Jo. Thank you to Steve, Lorraine & Pauline for inpuGng informaon to the TASBS program over the Div 1 final s eries, in parcular the Grand Final enabling supporters to view the play by play acon via the internet.

SCORERS ASSOCIATION (cont’d)

As a result of the data input it was found there were some discrepancies in the data supplied and so as we did in 2010 we have arranged for a night of review/clarificaon of scoring situaons found in Div 1 data and of the recent exams held. We will again combine this evening with the AGM and offer members a light supper. It was extremely heartening at our last AGM to have such a wonderful response; thank you and congratulate your-selves for supporng your associaon.

These stascs are vital for Division 1 and culminate in the CAPPS Medal Presentaon; a celebraon of our game and the achievements of individual players. Congratulaons to Baseball SA on a successful evening, this year held at SAJC Morphe'ville. This year the SABSA sponsored the medal winner for Division 8; this is a great opportunity for this Associaon to be involved in the recognion of individual players. We shall have to have some conversaon with Baseball SA about an opon of including a Scorer with the officials in the State All Star team. It would be wonderful to give recognion for what the scorers do in their role; the decisions & stascs enable all involved to ‘see’ how the game progressed with an official result!

During the season there were opportunies for scorers to meet with umpires at less formal occasions. Our SABSA Christmas dinner meeng at the Hackney Hotel was also well supported, and enjoyed by all who a'ended.

Thank you to Baseball SA for their support and in parcular, Paul Chandler for his support of SABSA throughout the season.

The Baseball SA Director whose role it was to collaborate with the affiliated associaons was Peter Fischer. Thank you Lorraine for ensuring Peter was kept informed.

Congratulaons to Lorraine Dunn; recipient of the “Official of the Year” award at the Baseball Australia Diamond Awards held in Queensland in April! Well deserved & congratulaons.

Thank you to our commi'ee; Steve Eads, Vice President, Carol Burns, Secretary, Jo Thomson, Treasurer & Lor-raine Dunn our CABS Technical Commissioner.

I sincerely hope the 2011/2012 season connues to develop links between the interested parcipants involved with this great spectator game. Reminder to all scorers & interested people that the meengs for SABSA are bi-monthly and further details & rule interpretaons (Rule 10) can be found on the web site.
