Dear Friends of Salvadori,

I now find myself writing my final annual report letter to you. First of all, I want to thank you for the privilege of leading Salvadori these past seven years. I think we can all be proud of what we have accomplished in growing the organization so that it can enrich the learning process for more and more children.

We have a fine and truly dedicated staff. We have a devoted and committed Board of Directors, and we have a mission that is stronger than ever. We also have a strong balance sheet and balanced budget that we have been able to grow by increasing fundraising, obtaining more grants, and providing more fee-for-service programs.

Our focus has also shifted over these past few years. From a concentration of working directly with children, we have moved towards training more and more teachers in our practices. In this manner, we can truly leverage our small staff to reach a multiple of the children we can reach ourselves.

We are fortunate to have Greg Kelly taking the reins as Chairman. He has been a steady and dedicated Board Member, and has clearly demonstrated the same commitment to Salvadori that I hope I have shown. It is my intent to remain an active member of the Board.

Lastly, let me say that these years as Chairman have been a truly rewarding experience for me personally, and I am extremely grateful for having had this unique opportunity. There is no adequate way to express my appreciation for the support all of you have shown to the organization in the past, and which I know will continue into the future.

Sincerely,

Robert Selsam, Chairman

Dear Friends,

What a difference a year makes! Once again, the Salvadori Center has kept its forward momentum, even at a time when many not-for-profits have struggled. This is thanks, in no small part, to our committed and creative staff and our insightful and industrious board.

Using data from the ongoing evaluation of our programs, we have refined and improved our offerings to better meet the needs of all learners: students and teachers alike. We are now viewed as a “go-to” provider for NYC schools looking for high-quality STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) programming. We continue to focus on the professional development of teachers by creating interactive and interdisciplinary learning communities to ensure sustainability of Salvadori practice. Our hope is to create a legion of educators – both in and out of schools – who will pass along Mario’s vision of meaningful math and science education to a diverse array of students.

This year, we initiated some new partnerships to help us extend our reach in the future. Our efforts at coalition building will position us to disseminate Salvadori to more and more communities. We also successfully revamped our curricula as we gear up for the creation of a Salvadori product line. Stay tuned for more information on both these efforts!

Thank you for your continuing support of the Salvadori Center. Please continue to stay involved. Share your wisdom with children. Help a teacher build a bridge. Fund an after-school project. Help make a real difference in the life of a child.

Avanti!

Dr. Leonisa Ardizzone, President

• THE GLOBE PROGRAM - Guided Learning through Our Built Environment, is an innovative 3-year residency in selected New York City public schools. It integrates Salvadori's interdisciplinary project-based pedagogy through on-site lesson modeling, curriculum development, and teacher mentoring by Salvadori educators.

• THE LEAD PROGRAM - With LEAD [Learning through Engineering, Architecture and Design], the Center offers shorter-term opportunities for public and private schools in the New York area: 8-session units on bridges, skyscrapers, my community, green design, and many other topics.

• PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR EDUCATORS - Teacher education initiatives, from three-day Institutes to targeted workshops to focused preparation through our "Practical PD" program, help educators develop project-based lesson plans specific to their curriculum.

• THE B.R.I.D.G.E.S. PROGRAM - [Build Research Invent Design Grow & Explore through Science] ― Real-world projects give 8-12 year olds enrolled in New York City Housing Authority after-school programs fun and engaging experiences with science, engineering, mathematics, design, and technology. Funded by the National Science Foundation.

• CHARRETTE - In June, as a culminating activity for Salvadori schools, 100 students participate in an all-day design challenge. Working with architects and engineers from leading firms, students conceive, design, build, and present models to their peers. Challenges range from creating an eco-village of tree houses to redesigning Times Square.

OUR MISSION The Salvadori Center prepares teachers to unlock the math and science embedded in the structures that surround us. We inspire students and

their teachers to use the wonder, beauty, and logic of our built world as a foundation for learning.
