ELDERS REPORT FOR 2019They say a picture can tell a story and words are not required.

I took this image in South Sudan at a Christian school supported by Global Mission Partners (an arm of Churches of Christ) which shows school children dancing, giving thanks and praising God. To me it is a powerful picture of joy, a celebration and thanks to Our Father and of hope and peace.

The reality for each one of these children is, to be accepted into this Christian school they have to meet one criteria. They needed to have lost their parents in the civil war that has been going on throughout South Sudan over the last few years. They are being taught that in all things, even in the heart- breaking loss of their parents they can overcome all obstacles in life by having a relationship with our Father. That doesn’t mean their lives do not have challenges though, most live in poverty, the threat of civil war, lack of food and sanitation issues. However, their joy and enthusiasm transcends my comprehension of their reality.

Paul shares with us these words from his writing to the Philippians:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

How do we reconcile these words from Paul with the challenges these South Sudanese people face each day?

How do we here in WA, and especially in our community of True North, reconcile the words of Paul? This past year will be remembered for one worldwide event – the COVID 19 Pandemic and the impact it has had on so many lives. It has been a rollercoaster ride for many people and we have all reacted with different emotions and feelings. I read the above words from Paul, and it brings me reassurance knowing whatever we face as a child of God I have a saviour who cares. The other thing that strikes me about Paul’s words is that we need to be constantly having CONVERSATIONS with OUR FATHER. No matter the circumstances, whether challenging or encouraging Paul teaches “in all situations” constantly have conversations with our Father.

As an Eldership team we have pursued these words of Paul throughout this year. We at all times and in all situations have sought the wisdom of our Father and have tried to listen to his leading.

ELDERS REPORT FOR 2019It has been a challenging time through COVID-19, and more than ever we approached this time with the words of Paul very much in mind. Zoom has been our friend as we as an Eldership have been praying constantly for our people, community, state and nation.

The impact that True North church continues to have in our community is in no small way a testament to the many volunteers who give of their time and energy in helping us to reach people for Christ. Your many tireless hours and passion to pursue the presence of God in your lives and for others does not go unnoticed as an Eldership and we want to give you our heartfelt thanks.

The Vision and Leadership of Dean, our Senior Pastor, through this past year has been enormous and we thank you for your desire to always seek our Father’s leading, to allow time to have conversations with our Father and then to lead with wisdom and passion, this has been amazing. We are blessed to have you, and your servant nature in your leadership is a wonderful testament to your personal walk with our Father. To Lisa in your role as wife, mother and staff member, thank you for your continued support of Dean and also for your own ministry here at True North. Your partnership together is a gift we give thanks for.

To our wonderful and amazing staff, the passion and desire of each of you to lead and support is invaluable in continuing to expand the Kingdom of God in our community. You have shone in the light of new challenges, adapted your roles because of our changing world and circumstances thrown at us, and each of you has risen to this with enthusiasm and a God given desire and passion.

Each year I say we see new challenges; this year has proven to have been one of the most challenging times we have experienced as a world together, but also as a church community. Yet no challenge is greater than anything that our Father can see us through. This truly has been a road filled with opportunities that none of us could have foreseen BUT our Father is greater than all challenges.

I started with the words of Paul in Philippians 4:6 let me close with the words in the following verse.

7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:7 (NIV) Let’s continue to walk confidently into the future because we have a Saviour who truly does care for each one of us.

CHURCH BY THE NUMBERSEvery number has a name and every name has a story! And every story matters to God. As we continue to focus on reaching new people we see God building His Church!

GIVING

In 2019, we saw the outcomes of the 2017-2018 Momentum initiative coming to even greater fruition. The three key goals of Momentum were:

1) Solidifying our financial foundation for the future, 2) Resourcing rapid growth through staffing, and 3) Taking the next step at Mullaloo in our re-development plans.

Our giving for 2019 continued to be strong and healthy as God’s people honoured Him with their tithes and offerings. Alongside this, the additional income streams at our Merriwa campus continued to grow (“Merriwa Property Income” in the financial report).

of Christ Financial Services (CCFS), which became official in early 2020. In addition to the benefits of aligning our finances with the movement of which we are part (Churches of Christ), we were able to secure a significantly lower interest rate and completed the process of shifting the loan in early 2020. Next year’s report will reflect the change in the interest expense going down significantly, even as the Merriwa property income continues to grow. Just three years into the operation of the new location, the financial foundation is solid for the future (Momentum Goal #1).

Mullaloo Re-DevelopmentWith all of these factors in place, we were also able to take the next step in the design of our Mullaloo campus re-development (Momentum goal #3). Towards the end of 2019 we began organising for our partners at Plain Joe Studios (who designed our Merriwa location) to come and begin work on the next steps of designing Phase One at Mullaloo. The Plain Joe team came in early 2020 and we are continuing to progress work on the designs.

Going SolarIn 2019, we also began operating for our first year with solar power at both of our campuses. Over time, as the panels are paid off, not only will we be doing our part for a more sustainable world and taking care of God’s creation, we will also reap the benefits of less cost financially to our church for electricity.

2019 was another year of seeing God’s faithful provision for His church and growing our capacity to carry out His mission in this world!

NEXT STEPS

We believe everyone is on a journey, however no matter where we are there is always a STEP we can take toward God. Whether seeing people begin to attend services, join a team, get baptised or begin leading, many people took a step forward in following Jesus in 2019.

EVENTS OUTREACHThis year our carols events saw over 20,000 people in attendance across four nights and three locations! In addition to the Heathridge Carols and the Carols on the Green in Merriwa, we expanded to a brand new location in Yanchep.

An incredible team from both of our campuses came together to put on the very first Carols in the Park in Yanchep, connecting with over 2,500 people from the local area. The feedback from the local community has been fantastic and we believe it is just the beginning of what God will call us to do in the greater Yanchep area!

At the start of 2019 we felt God calling us in a new direction for our camp to take “New Ground”. New time of year + new location = New Levels! We moved camp to Baramba estate, a location with greater potential for students to be apart of what God is doing through TNY. We saw lives changed as they encountered Him.

What a great year 2019 was in True North Kids! We saw more baptisms, faith decisions and a growing hunger for worshipping God in our kids. We’re so grateful to all of our leaders for their continued investment and passion for the next generation!

IMAGINE CONFERENCE

Imagine was a 2-day gathering where 300+ people set aside time to seek God’s presence and “imagine” what He could do in and through the lives of His people. We were blessed to have keynote speaker Hank Fortner from Los Angeles, along with many other speakers from around Perth. It was an incredible weekend of being inspired and equipped to live bigger lives for God!

IMAGINE KIDS

In August 2019 we ran our first ever Imagine Kids Conference! The weekend was based on the Verse from Ephesians 3:20; Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. The theme for the weekend was all about Space, God’s creation of the planets and stars in our universe. Over the weekend 74 children aged from 0 years to Year 6 attended the Imagine Kids Conference.

Friday started off with a Glow party and children enjoyed dancing, games and praise and worship. Saturday the children learnt that God has made them all special and unique. Time was spent in small groups with discussion and prayer time for one another. Saturday night we ended with a pyjama party movie night and worshipped God for all that He had done! What an amazing opportunity to build into young children whilst their parents enjoyed Imagine. We had 55 leaders serving over the weekend.

MEN & WOMEN

True North WomenIn 2019 we introduced a variety of gatherings that created space where women could connect with God, each other and make a difference. We had neighbourhood House Parties, Posh Swap, Inspire nights and our Annual Conference.

True North MenWe ran four key events for men throughout the year including the men’s camp, fatherhood breakfast, BBQ night and Steak night. Each event was designed to create spaces for connection, fellowship and engage them in a process of discipleship.

MOPS

In 2019 we welcomed 56 unique mums, 18 not connected in another church community & cared for 48 children in our creche. MOPS provides women with a chance to make friends, grow in their motherhood journey and enjoy a short break from the hands-on requirements of motherhood. Our goal remains the same - to create a safe environment for community mums to discover the loving environment of a church family, and through this, the love of Jesus.

SUPER TUESDAY

Our aim has always been to build a place where people feel they belong and are cared for and this has been achieved once again this past year. The year of 2019 was our biggest year since we commenced 11 years ago.

Our year commenced in January with 111 enjoying a Pizza and Picnic in the Park at Joondalup. From there, it was full steam ahead with interesting weekly meetings including a variety of speakers on topics of general interest, outings, workshops on singing for fun, craft activities and more. Every year we have a fund raising campaign raising awareness and support for a particular cause and this year was the “Just Brass” Program run by the Balga Salvation Army where they set up Music in schools in the area. The need was for brass instruments and Super Tuesday worked to enable this to happen, raising $6,677!

In addition to this we continued to support our 3 sponsor children, the Cancer council, Grand Parents raising Grandchildren, Fire Relief and other causes as they arose. Our two Chaplains Joy Ingham and Dulcie Ladyman have worked tirelessly keeping in touch with those in need.

Super Fit commenced in March with exercises on a Monday morning, catering for not only members of Super Tuesday but for the general community. This has proven to be very successful and much needed with a weekly average attendance of 60.

Super Tuesday has continued to be a place where the love of Christ has been evident and without the committee and volunteers we could not have operated. Sincere thanks goes to all those involved.

TRUE NORTH BLOCK

In 2019 individual and corporate bookings increased by 40% and the same local schools returned. Concerts and performance bookings increased by 100% and birthday parties by 83%. Room hire revenue increased by 35% from 2017 to 2018 with a 12% increase by the end of 2019.

The Block’s vision has always been to create an uplifting place that brings people together and impacts the local community in a very positive way. In order to achieve this in the most effective way, we offer a range of unique products. Through collaboration with a number of organisations we were able to host uplifting, fun, family-friendly events at very little or no cost at all to the local community:

NgalaIn 2019 True North The Block was successful in applying for the Parenting Connection Team’s ‘Parenting Capacity Funding’. This created a fantastic opportunity to build into our local community by starting fortnightly free ‘Toddler Tuesday’ sessions – attended by hundreds.

MercyCareThrough great relationships with the Community Development and Family Community Services Team at the Merriwa Community Hub, MercyCare funded some of The Block’s school holiday events – attended by approximately 300 people.

UnitingCare WestIn partnership with UnitingCare West we hosted an Outer North NAIDOC Celebration event in July 2019 – attended by more than 500 people.

Anglicare WAThe Block co-hosted a Mental Health Awareness Expo and Family Fun Day in October 2019.This event was enjoyed by approx. 700 people.

In 2019, our partners are:

COMPASSION seek to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name. They believe Jesus is the ultimate source of hope: both for the immediate and the eternal, and each Compassion project is run entirely through the local church. We support Compassion’s Mums and Babies survival project in Bareng, Indonesia which provides regular home visits and mothers groups for a babies first year; these visits have a significant effect on supporting families, and work to prevent premature death, secure good health and enable positive development in the youngest, most vulnerable children.

INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE MISSION is a global organisation that protect the poor from violence in the developing world. IJM partners with local authorities to rescue victims of violence, bring criminals to justice, restore survivors, and strengthen justice systems. We support the Cebu, Philippines field office as they fight cybersex trafficking and in partnership with local law enforcement, IJM have rescued more than 300 children from cybersex trafficking.

CBM is a Christian development organisation devoted to improving the lives of people with disabilities in the poorest places on earth. As many as 80% of people with disability live in poverty, further perpetuating a cycle of inequality, isolation and exclusion. We specifically support CBM’s Miracles Day which provides sight-saving operations for those with cataract blindness. This year your generosity has provided for 151 people to have this simple, yet life-changing surgery!

OPPORTUNITY INTERNATIONAL gives families in developing countries the tools they need to work their way out of poverty, and create a new future for generations to come. Their micro-finance project provides small business loans throughout multiple locations in Asia. These loans have a 98% repayment rate, and once someone repays their loan, it’s re-lent to someone else. As their businesses grow, families have enough to live safe, healthy lives and send their children to school. Many even go on to employ others in their community!

SAFE WATER SEPTEMBER is an annual campaign to provide communities with safe, accessible water in Zimbabwe and Vanuatu. Waterborne disease is one of the leading causes of death for young children and as many as 1 in 9 people worldwide don’t have clean water close to home; it’s often children that travel great distances to collect water for their family. With close access to safe water, kids are back in school, child and maternal deaths are dropping and communities are being transformed! In 2019 we provided for 250 people to have access to life changing, safe water.

At the heart of our global impact giving is the desire to see tangible needs met, injustices eradicated AND people come to know Christ and life that is found in Him. As we explore what it looks like to advance God’s Kingdom in a global space, we know that there is no kingdom without a king, and ultimately we want all peoples to know this King, Jesus, but we also recognise that God’s heart for the poor, vulnerable and oppressed remains irrespective of their acknowledgement of Him. And so, we hold both approaches to pursing ‘kingdom work’, mercy & justice and discipleship & evangelism, together as we partner with God in bringing renewal in our world.

At True North all of our giving goes into one fund, with 5% going towards our Global Impact partners annually.

We’ve made the shift to ethical purchasing on the everyday essentials we use at True North; we love WHO GIVES A CRAP and THANKYOU. products. Both companies have transparent sourcing and support grassroots health and sanitation projects around the world, providing access to toilets and clean water.

OPEN DOORS work to strengthen and prepare Christians living in persecution so that they, as the local church, are able to transform their nation for Jesus. They have local partners in 70 countries, often working covertly to provide bibles, biblical literature, leadership training and discipleship. They also meet the practical needs such as jobs, health care, safe houses, and emergency food and water. Our giving goes to whichever place and project is most in need at the time.

GLOBAL MISSION PARTNERS support local leaders to impact their communities through life-changing projects. They have seen amazing transformation through this approach to global mission, because local leaders understand the heartbeat of their communities, and the unique challenges and opportunities that exist. Our funds go towards GMP’s Zimbabwe Church Partnership which helps build the capacity of the local church by supporting key leaders and developing leadership skills, equipping them to serve their community despite the hardships in Zimbabwe.

VOICE OF HOPE provides a voice for the voiceless and supports a number of grassroots projects throughout Africa, primarily in Uganda. These include child sponsorship programs, school scholarships, wheelchair provision and support and counselling to women fleeing domestic abuse, and young girls during pregnancy. By mentoring pastors and equipping them with the resources they need to serve the numerous villages under their care, VOH are able to reach many living in extreme poverty and hopelessness, providing for both their practical and spiritual needs.

Lyn & Peter Mackay have been actively involved in global SPORTS MINISTRY, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, for over 15 years. Their mission is to make disciples in all nations for Christ in the world of sport and play. By serving and partnering with local teams and leaders in the sports and fitness industry, they proclaim the gospel and are seeing disciples in every city and community involved. Lyn & Peter are currently advisors to the Pacific Islands, having been asked to be advisors to providing mentoring to their teams

As a surplus from our global impact giving in 2018, we were able to help contribute to the cost of travel for JOSH BLACKWELL and RILEY TURNER. Josh is currently serving and undertaking training in America with Youth With a Mission and Riley is completing a year internship at Hackney Church in Hackney, London with his wife Taylah, and daughter Evie.

SOUTH SUDAN

We continued in 2019 to provide support to South Sudan with school supplies for boys from Patuet at school in a refugee camp and support for the local Sudanese Church here in the northern suburbs.

GLOBAL IMPACT PARTNERS

In 2019, we also began partnering to support some of our own crew here at True North in making a difference for world missions around the world:

RILEY, TAYLAH & EVIE TURNER We were sent to be a part of the team at a church in East London called Hackney Church. Hackney Church is apart of the HTB network which is the most influential movement in England. London is one of the most influential cities in the world and much of that cultural influence comes out of East London, making Hackney Church a great place for Taylah and I to do ministry into today’s mission field (cities). Hackney Church is fast growing and highly creative. Taylah and I worked with the senior leadership team to help build the church’s effectiveness for reaching and discipling people. We built the team structure for serving in the church, assisted the senior leadership in their discipleship and leadership strategy and helped run various ministry areas that influence the local community, from baby and toddler programs to feeding the homeless and running community outreach events.

JOSH BLACKWELLIn mid-2019 I was blessed with the opportunity to become a Global Impact Partner and head to the U.S to join staff with the missions organisation Youth With a Mission (YWAM).As I had already spent six months as a student with YWAM in the U.S, Malaysia & India, I was thrilled to go back and join as a staff member with the generous support of True North. Upon returning in June 2019, I spent six months at a YWAM base located in Washington State, in a town called Lynden, where I took on various roles in helping to disciple and train students who would be sent out in teams for outreaches throughout South-East and Central Asia. I was also involved in local outreach programs, connecting with migrants and international students, partnering with local churches for worship and prayer, as well as for reaching rural youth. I was also part of a team involved in pioneering a new ministry called Tentmakers, creating original music, video content and events with a focus on mental health. On a personal level, it was a time of learning that God is truly in control! He is always working for good, and that the best thing we can do is to trust Him.

LYN & PETER MACKAY Lyn & Peter Mackay have been involved in global SPORTS MINISTRY, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, for over 15 years. Their mission is to make disciples in all nations for Christ in the world of sport and play. By serving and partnering with local teams and leaders in the sports and fitness industry, they proclaim the gospel and are seeing disciples in every city and community involved.

LOCAL IMPACT

ALPHA

We launched Alpha with 68 people attending an Alpha Launch Party! This night was a great way of allowing those who are new to faith or church to come to an environment where people were at ease and enjoyed a great atmosphere of live music, great food and awesome conversations.

We went on to host Alpha across 8 weeks with 36 people continuing to explore faith and seeing many take next steps in following Jesus.

NAPPY NOVEMBER

Across November we initiated the appeal to buy nappies that will support and help refugees to provide nappies for their children. We donated 120 packs of nappies to One Single Act of Compassion.

CARE

2019 was another wonderful year caring for our community. Thank you to the many volunteers who faithfully served in the Community Lounge and Threads Op Shop.

TRUE NORTH CHURCH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - MINUTES

SUNDAY 26 MAY 2019 1. Meeting opened in prayer 12:33pm. Brian shared some thoughts:

a. Ephesians 4 b. We are working as a ‘body moving’ c. Part of the reason the NZ All Blacks are so successful is their culture of “Not

expecting someone else to do your job for you”. d. Everybody has a vital part to play. e. We are striving to “passionately pursue our Father’s presence in all things”.

2. Thoughts from Dean a. Reflection on the increasing growth and impact to more people in the

community – so many different ages, needs, programs, events etc. b. Taking a strategic look at how to renovate/improve Mullaloo to build bridges

to the community. c. Residents of the local community are recognising the good that the church is

doing in the area. d. Renewal is happening through so many churches around the world.
