WELCOME

I am delighted to welcome you all to this event and we all look forward to meeting as many as you as possible through the course of the day. Events such as this provide invaluable opportunities for professional networking with educationalists across the full range of the health professions working in the NHS within the east of England. The theme for the morning will be Human Factors and Ergonomics in Healthcare, and I am very pleased to be able to welcome our keynote speaker Professor Sue Hignett from Loughborough University, a recognised International expert in this important and fascinating area. Following Sue’s main presentation, there will be an opportunity for some further exploration of the subject with small group workshops. Once again we are looking forward to celebrating the extraordinary commitment and enthusiasm of our healthcare educational community through our annual awards. This year there were 268 nominations, spread over the 10 award categories - a record number. The quality and depth of the submissions was truly humbling, and this year we have decided to “showcase” the finalists in each category through poster exhibitions running throughout the

day and workshops in the early part of the afternoon. Finalists from all of the categories will also be celebrated at the NHS Leadership Recognition Awards in November.

Once again we will be able to celebrate the extraordinary commitment and enthusiasm of our healthcare educational community through our annual awards. This year there were 268 nominations, spread over the 10 award categories - a record number. The quality and depth of the submissions was truly humbling, and this year we have decided to “showcase” the finalists in each category through poster exhibitions running throughout the day and workshops in the early part of the afternoon.

Across the region my colleagues at HEEoE and colleagues within partner organisations have been working hard to develop a Faculty of Educators across all professions in the NHS. Following some key recent appointments, I anticipate that this will become a body of increasing profile and importance. It is my hope that as key members of this group you will leave us both educationally “refreshed” and keen to disseminate some of the excellent and innovative educational practice showcased at the conference.

Professor Sue Hignett will present a session titled ‘Human Factors & Ergonomics reaching out into all areas of Clinical Practice’

Sue Hignett is Professor of Healthcare Ergonomics & Patient Safety at Loughborough University (UK). Over the last 30 years she has experienced the healthcare industry as a clinician, ergonomist, researcher and patient.

Her research looks at a wide range of human factors and ergonomics issues including hospital and ambulance design, medical device evaluation, staff wellbeing and an innovative approach to patient falls.

Prof. Hignett is the Chair of the Education & Training panel at the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, and Editor for ‘Ergonomics’. She is currently working with Health Education England and colleagues from the Chartered Institute on a series of workshops to raise awareness of Human Factors and Ergonomics in healthcare.

Objectives of the Session:

1. To explore how Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) principles can be applied in healthcare education.

2. To outline HFE principles and practices with respect to safety, wellbeing and performance for patients, staff and other people in the system.

3. To discuss the relationship between HFE and Quality Improvement (QI).

Award finalists from the Quality in Education and Training Awards 2015 will be running workshops between 13:50 -15:35. Delegates will have the opportunity to watch two sets of presentations during this session, a short break to switch rooms will take place between 14:40-14:45.

The workshops will give each finalist an opportunity to share their work with conference delegates, to disseminate good practice, inspire others and encourage innovation back to their teams and organisations. Each workshop will focus on a specific award, with the three finalists from that award presenting.

Sam Behjati

ST5 Paediatrics, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust

Genome sequencing of normal cells reveals developmental lineages and mutational processes.

In this paper Sam devised and employed a novel method to reconstruct embryology and to study mutational process in normal cells, using whole genome sequences of single cell clones. The paper was awarded the Donald Paterson Prize of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, a prize awarded for the best scientific articles written by a pre-Consultant paediatrician.

Alexander Durst

ST4 Trauma and Orthopaedics, West Suffolk Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

An evaluation of multimodal spinal cord monitoring in scoliosis surgery: a single centre experience of 354 operations.

The paper’s aims were to show that multimodal neuromonitoring can effectively prevent neurological complications in spinal deformity surgery, for which there were loose national guidelines but no current consensus opinion. This research shows high sensitivity and specificity for its use, and that it should be the gold standard in deformity surgery. This is reliant on an experienced and dedicated team structure.

Meng Wang

ST3 Haematology, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA) after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: Analysis of 533 Adult Patients Who Underwent Transplantation at King’s College Hospital.

AIHA is a poorly characterised post-transplant complication, with no consensus on optimal treatment. Limited case series and small retrospective studies indicate that post-transplant AIHA can be very aggressive and resistant to treatment.

To better understand the risk factors, prognosis and management of post-transplant AIHA, Meng carried out a retrospective analysis of 533 adult patients that underwent bone marrow transplants at King’s College Hospital.

Organisational learning and In-situ simulation: A theory put into practice.

The project was developed to promote the culture of organisational learning in the Intensive care unit (ITU). It involves creating a safe learning environment at work. This was possible only by engaging all the individuals in the ITU and bringing them together in improving education, team working and the environment. In-situ simulation was a theoretically ideal tool but has not been used previously for this purpose.

Talitha Mirja de Vries

CT2 Anaesthetics, Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Use of the National Hip Fracture Database for Quality Improvement in Anaesthesia for Hip Fracture Patients.

The aim of this quality improvement project was to implement the recommendations of the Anaesthetic Sprint Audit of Practice 2013 in order to give hip fracture patients the best care possible. The project showed very good results - quickly reaching its target rate for spinal anaesthetics, showing that interventions do not need to consume many resources to be effective.

Emma Stevens

FY2 Doctor, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust

Standardised storage of venepuncture and cannulation equipment: Can it deliver efficiency savings and improve patient care?

This project is based on a problem identified by junior doctors working in a surgical department. It has demonstrated that the use of a standardised storage of equipment needed for basic, commonly performed ward-based tasks improves efficiency and patient care. Through collaborative working with departmental clinicians and managers, the outcome of the project has resulted in changes in the targeted wards.

Aisha is a very keen and enthusiastic student nurse who goes out of her way to assist students both in practice and in the university. She has a very kind, caring and compassionate manner and treats people with respect and dignity, as seen in the university and from feedbacks from practice. This dedication has seen Aisha voted in by unanimous vote for each year of her course as a course representative by all her colleagues and as a faculty representative by students within the FHSCE in her final year.

Daniela Petrova

FY2, Cambridge Academic Foundation Programme

Nominated by Group Captain Andrew Timperley, Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff, Centre of Aviation Medicine, RAF Henlow

Daniela has shown excellence in leadership both nationally and internationally throughout 2014-2015. She single-handedly organised and chaired the Human Spaceflight Panel at the Royal Aeronautical Society President’s Conference. Daniela brought a maturity and innovative thinking far beyond that expected for her years or level of training and there are very few that could have performed to such a high standard in the rapidly evolving specialty of Aerospace Medicine.

Kirsty Thomas

Kirsty has held the post of Chair of the Occupational Therapy society for the past year. Kirsty has demonstrated outstanding team working skills in co-ordinating the OT society and continually promotes the profession through events such as the special senses day at Colchester zoo and OT week at the university. Kirsty also initiated a training afternoon focussed on leadership.

Chrishan is a most dedicated teacher with a deep interest in medical education; he takes a unique approach to teaching and prioritises enhancing student confidence and improving clinical skills. Chrishan’s students give universally positive feedback, and both quantitative and qualitative analyses performed on these courses actually demonstrated a significant improvement in pass rate and student confidence.

Veronica Melchionda

Nominated by George Zachariah, Royal College Tutor Veronica has been actively involved in various teaching initiatives organised by the postgraduate faculty. Some of them were initiated by her and it is a proof to her organisational skill that she managed to run the ‘Falls Series’ - teaching for junior Doctors to reflections around the challenges faced in opening a new ward with suggestions for process and engagement for the future. Veronica sees every challenge as an opportunity and also puts it to paper.
