re to the westThe idea of the telegraph was used in

a primitive fashion hundredsof years be-

fore it became the many-wired, highly-

developed system that it is today. Afri-

can tribes sent messages via drumbeat

over long stretches of jungle. The Amer-

ican Indian found that smoke signals

were an effective means of sending mes-

sages. The navies of the world used col-

ored flags for ship-to-ship communication.

Then, in the first part of the 19th cen-

tury, Samuel Morse discovered that mes-

sages could be sent by electricity, and the

telegraph came into its own.

Getting lines across the country, much

of which was wild and unknown, was a

tough job. The huge granite formations

and the freezing temperature of the high

Sierras presented a formidable obstacle,

and the wire-stringers simply had to do

the best they Gould with what they could

handle. Under the supervision of the in-

domitable Frank Bee, telegraph lines were

strung from pine tree to pine tree across

the mountain ranges of the country. Joke-

sters laughingly, though respectfully, re-

ferred to this arrangement as ''Bee's

Grapevine Line".

To the casual observer, Alkali was like

all other towns on the Santa Fe trail. Lining

its single dusty street were the conven-

tional unpainted buildings, hitchracks, and

sagging board sidewalks. Yet something

existed in Alkali that set it apart from its

sister trail towns. This "something" was a

mystery which, for weeks, had plagued the-

town's good citizens as well as those indi-

viduals who could not be so classified.

The mystery was why, every evening

soon after sundown, the Englishman, Gareth

Latham, entered his little two-room house,

locked the doors, drew heavy curtains across

the windows, and did not reappear—at least

publicly—until the following morning.

Except for this peculiar way of spending

his evenings, Gareth had tried earnestly to

conform to the rugged pioneer life almost

from the moment he had stepped out of the

westbound stage two months earlier. It could

not have been easy for the younger son of

a duke—for such Gareth proved to be—to

buckle down in levis and heavy work shoes

and earn his living as swamper for mule-

skinner Joe Carney and his jerk-line string.

But as Gareth put it, "There are few, if

any, opportunities for younger sons in Eng-

land. There are many here—for everyone."

In a larger town, Gareth's nightly self-

imposed seclusion would have attracted lit-

tle, or no, attention. But in Alkali, it was a

matter of communal concern—and curiosity.

"It sure buffaloes me," Joe Carney said

one night in the general store, where a dozen

of Alkali's leading male citizens were dis-

cussing the matter.

"We ought to come right out and ask him

what he does," declared Fred Turner.

r

"I did," Joe said. "He smiled kinda funny-

like an" didn't answer."

Fred's eyes narrowed suspiciously. "Then

it must be something crooked!" When most ofthe group nodded agreement, he reached for

his hat. "Cm on! Let's go over to Latham's

and settle this mystery once and for all!"

A couple of the men demurred, but the

majority overruled them. And a few minutes

later, Fred Turner was pounding on the door

of Gareth's locked and curtained house.

"Who's there?" came Gareth's voice.

"Some o' your fellow citizens," replied

Fred. "We want to see you—nowl""But that is impossible. If you -will return

in an hour—

"I said NOW!" interrupted Fred. "Andif you don't open the door before I count

five, I'm shootin' off the lock! One—two

three—

" He stopped counting as a key turned

on the other side of the door.

As the door opened, the men outside

gasped in unison. For the Gareth Latham

facing them was an elegant stranger in

swallow-tail suit and white dress shirt 'com-

plete with stiff wing collar and white bow tie.

"Good evening, gentlemen," smiled Gareth,

stepping aside with a gesture of invitation,

"Will you come in""

Incredulously, the men stared into the

room beyond, where two flickering candles

lighted a small supper table set with white

linen and gleaming silver.

Finally, Joe Carney found his voice, "I

don't savvy, Latham."

"I was afraid no one would," said Gareth.

"That's why I locked the door and drew the

curtains."

Fred Turner gulped. "You mean this dudin'

up is ALL you've been doin' in here at night ?"

Gareth nodded.

"But why?" frowned Joe. ,

Gareth's smile widened. "Because, as an

ancient Roman poet wrote, 'Nothing is

stronger than custom.' And since for twenty

years, I've always dressed for dinner . .."

Gareth did not finish. His audience, shame-

faced and sheepish, was melting away into

the night shadows.
