Chet Dane had sensed trouble when he was

still a mile away from Mesa City, He rode

slowly down the dusty street with his right

hand hooked stiffly into his gunbelt next

to the holster, and wondered if he should

not have ridden in the other direction to

Silverton.

But it was too late to turn back. Gauging

the low morning sun, Chet figured that the

man he had come to see would, not yet be at

his office. The predawn ride had left him

with a gnawing hunger; so he pulled up at

the hitch rail in front of the Chuck Wagon

Cafe. Fumbling the reins with his left hand,

he tied' his roan and went inside.

Chet had no more than placed his order

when Sheriff Mike Carson hurried in.

"Heard that you'd ridden in." the sheriff

said. "Reckon I should warn you to ride out

again and quick!"

"Ride out?" Chet questioned. "Why?"

"Jud Grogan heard that you're here. He's

at the Bullwhip Saloon, waiting for you. I

reckon you know why."

Chet fingered the glass salt and pepper

shakers with his left hand. His right thumb

was still hooked stiffly in his gunbelt near

his single holster."Yeah. I know." Chet replied.

Jud Grogan had sworn revenge more than

a month ago, after Chet had caught Jud's

brother rustling Diamond-C cattle and had

ou'drawn him in a fair gun fight,

"You won't stand chance with Jud," the

sheriff continued. "You'd better ride out. I'll

sea that he doesn't follow you."

Chet thought it over. He was not afraid

of Jud, although" the big man was as gun-

swift as they come; but today he had a

good excuse not to face Jud in a gun fight.

Still, an excuse would only delay their in-

evitable showdown.

"What do you figure to do?" Sheriff Carson

asked with concern.

Chet jiggled the salt and pepper shakers

thoughtfully in his left hand, as he pon-

dered the situation more thoroughly. Hegot up without waiting for his breakfast,

dropped the payment on the tableandmoved toward the door. His left hand was

knotted in a tight grip; his right hand re-

mained in his gunbelt.

"I'll give Jud Grogan his satisfaction,"

Chel said simply, as he moved away.

Later, as Chet strode into the Bullwhip

Saloon, Grogan turned quickly from the bar.

A leering thin smile crossed his bearded,

swarthy face.

"So it's you," snarled Jud. "Draw your

gun, Dane, and get killed!"

Chet's right thumb remained hooked near

his holster. Jud Grogan watched it closely

as Chet kept striding toward him.

"Make your move!" Grogan bellowed, his

hand flashing down toward the butt Of his

six-shooter.

Scarcely four feet separated them when

Chet Dane leaped forward, flinging his

opened left hand toward the outlaw's face.

A shot roared out! A bullet sped pastChet's head as he ducked.

Then Jud Grogan began rubbing his eyes,

desperately trying to stop the searing sting

of the salt and pepper that Chet had flung

in his face.

"You had a right to gun him, Chet," said

Sheriff Carson a few minutes later. "But I

guess you stopped him anyway, and you

didn't even draw!"

Chet smiled, "I couldn't draw, Sheriff! You

see, I came to town io see the doctor. Mybronc fell on me yesterday, and I'm not sure,

but I think my right arm's busted. Least

wise, I can't use it!"

ACOLD

NIGHT'SSLEEP

During' 1878, the steady arrival of miners in the camp of

Leadville, Colorado, created a demand for lodging. Oneman threw up a cheap hotel but did not have enough blan-

kets for the beds ! He solved the problem in a 'novel way . .

After registering a newcomer, the owner

would direct him to a room. Upon the dis-

covery of no bedding, the guest would

return, demanding blankets for his bed.

What the owner actually did was find a

room occupied by a sound sleeper. He then

stole the blanket from that room and re-

turned, presenting it to the new guest.

The proprietor would apologize, explain-

ing that he kept blankets locked in a roomto keep them from thieves. While the guest

waited, the owner went for the coverings.

This occurred nightly until one miner got

wise. He tied his blanket to the bedpost

and waited for the proprietor to steal it.

That, put an end to the blanket stealing!
