From the Seminarian August 15, 2021

This weekend we celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Mary. In light of this, I want to share with you one of my favorite, and seemingly unconnected, Gospel passages, Mark 4: 35-41 “The Calming of the Storm”. In the

midst of chaos - waves throwing the Apostles back and forth as water begins to fill the boat to fear of sinking and horror grips the faces of the Apostles as death stares them down - Scripture tells us Jesus was in the stern of the boat sleeping peacefully and comfortably on a cushion. What juxtaposition! Complete peace and sheer terror. We know the end of the story of course, Christ rebukes the wind, calms the sea and then turns to His Apostles and chastises their lack of faith. The confidence and trust of Christ in our Father is so perfect no worldly storm (literal, spiritual, physical, emotional, etc.) could take Him from resting in His Father. In other words, He knows and trusts the will of the Father so deeply, as unnerving as this storm may seem He knows there is absolutely nothing to fear. He says as much to the Apostles. “Do you not yet have faith?” In other words, the Father has sent me for a purpose and I have called you after me for a purpose, do you truly think the Father will allow anything to keep His will from being done? In this passage, Jesus poses a question to us all, namely, how far are we willing to trust? Amidst the storms of life will we panic and “abandon ship” so to speak, or will we stay the course and be given the peace of Christ to endure it all? Now, as beautiful as that is, what does it have to do with Mary and her Assumption? Mary is another channel of comfort for us, a guide

to that same disposition of Christ in the boat. Mary says, “Do whatever He tells you”. She is constantly showing us how to be more and more like her Son. Through consecration and various other devotions to her, she is not only an example but makes a gift of herself. St. Louise DeMontfort contends she gives her very heart to us analogous to when Christ gives His very self in the Eucharist. Just as Christ had absolute trust in the Father, Mary has absolute trust in her Son and that very heart full of love and trust is given to us to confidently endure all things in the name of Christ. Lastly, as Mary is human and our mother, we too can go the way of Mary. If we follow her to Christ, we follow her to Heaven. So, the Assumption of Mary is a strengthening of heart for us just as the Transfiguration of Christ was a strengthening for the Apostles before the Passion. The Assumption is a foreshadowing of what will happen to all the faithfully departed at the resurrection, body and soul perfectly united to the Father for eternity.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP IN DISCIPLESHIP? We accept the sacrament of Baptism. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states “Incorporated into Christ by Baptism, the person baptized is configured to Christ. Baptism seals the Christian with the indelible spiritual mark of his belonging to Christ. No sin can erase this mark, even if sin prevents Baptism from bearing the fruits of salvation.” (CCC, no. 1272). If you were baptized as an infant, learn more about what promises your parents made on your behalf to grow in the faith. What are the effect of Baptism on disciples? (CCC1976)

Baptism is the door to life and to the Kingdom of God. ...that we may have eternal life ...that men and women, enlightened by the Spirit's grace, respond to the Gospel Baptism moves us to answer Christ's call to holiness In Baptism we are asked to walk by the light of Christ and to trust in his wisdom the baptized are called to transform the world with the light and power of the Gospel. WHAT ARE THE RESPONSEBILITIES OF THE BAPTIZED? The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults adds “Living out one's Baptism is a lifelong responsibility. Growing in holiness and discipleship involves a willingness to continue to learn throughout one's whole life about the faith and how to live it. It also involves a willingness to support and encourage others who share the faith.” page 196 REFLECT: Do I continue to learn about the Catholic faith and how to live it? Do I believe that my baptism is a lifelong responsibility to grow in holiness? How can I take my Baptismal promises more seriously? ACT: begin reading the Bible daily (a good Catholic edition is best) if you don't already attend a parish or online bible study research local agencies, organizations and ministries that help the poor, the needy, the marginalized and join or donate financially pray daily and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance in deepening your faith and your response to faith John 13:15 “ What I just did was to give you an example: as I have done, so you must do.”

"¿Aún no tienes fe?"

Peter Guthrie
