Our Leadership

1

Members of the Class of 2015 are filled with mixed emotions on graduation night.

2

In our fourth year we completed and began to implement our strategic plan in the areas ofCatholic identity, academic excellence, finance, enrollment, development and facilities. We spent a great deal of time working toward the launch of our Excellence Faith Future Capital Campaign in response to our surging enrollment growth to ensure human formationand academic success of our Saints long into the future. Our goal for the campaign is 9 milliondollars, and to date we have 5 million dollars pledged and received. Over the next three years, the campaign requires each of us to look into our heart, as those who have gone before us, torealize that, to a great extent, it is through Berks Catholic High School that our Saint’s faithblossoms and grows, our Church gains strength, it ensures future leaders and solidifies the future of Catholic education. The proposed three story Learning Center will consist of a cafeteria expansion on the lower level, two classrooms and a Learning Commons on the first floor and six classrooms on the second floor. In addition a balcony is proposed for the auditorium to allow for over 1000 seats, and the main stadium will get a new track and artificial turf. The Excellence Faith Future Campaign will position Berks Catholic for growthand success long into the future

The class of 2015 contained students discerning the priesthood and religious life; 97% of themhave continued their education in college and collectively were offered over 10 million dollarsin academic scholarships. Some of the Class of 2015 have entered the military, technicalschools, and are exploring gap years involving service.

Our students have grown spiritually by attending Mass as a community, performed thousandsof hours of service, attended retreats and are discerning what vocation the Lord is calling themtoward.

We appreciate your patience in the publication of the 2014-15 Annual Report. O’Connelland Company recently completed our first full audit covering the 2014-2015 school year, andas a result we received an unqualified favorable opinion.

I am convinced that your investment in Berks Catholic High School produces young menand women who will be catalysts for good wherever they live. I thank you for being a believerand a partner in our mission. Your prayers, financial support and encouragement make thesuccess of our mission a reality. God Bless you and your family and Go Saints!

Sincerely,

Tony BalistrerePrincipal

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,2015 was a special year for Berks Catholic and for our legacy schools, Holy Nameand Central Catholic. The Holy Name and Central Catholic Classes of 1965 celebrated their 50th Class Reunions. All 50th Class Reunions are significant, butthese two were particularly noteworthy because of their impact on the history ofCatholic Education in Berks County. In 1965 Holy Name was built, and studentsfrom Central Catholic were divided geographically between the two schools. Students from Reading Catholic continued their education at the new HolyName. Fifty years later, as Holy Name and Central celebrated their class reunions, the Berks Catholic Class of 2015 became the first class to attend all four years atBerks Catholic. Catholic Education was growing and thriving in 1965, and fiftyyears later is growing and thriving again. As we record the successes of anotherschool year, I am both humbled and grateful for the support of our alumni, parentsand friends of Berks Catholic that continue to make our growth in enrollment andcontributions possible.

With the 2016/2017 school year on the horizon, we will have well over 800 Saintswalking the halls of Berks Catholic. And thanks to your continued support, we aresuccessfully forwarding our mission and continuing to meet goals in fundraising anddevelopment.

As we strive to meet the needs of our surging enrollment, we have developed aStrategic Plan, which can be found on our website. As part of the Strategic Plan,we have embarked on the Excellence Faith Future Capital Campaign, throughwhich we have received pledges and gifts totaling $5 Million. As we work towardour goal of $9 Million, I thank you in advance for your prayerful consideration tosupport this important campaign, which will create more space for our growing stu-dent body.

And, as always, thank you for your continued support, your prayers, contributions of time, talent and treasure, and for all that you do to help continue the traditionsof Catholic secondary education in Berks County. Together we are making adifference in the lives of many Saints.

With much gratitude,

Betsy Gibney WoytovichDirector of Development

For starters, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is MarinaMorales, and I am a senior at Berks Catholic High School. I amexcited to say that after many meetings with the very helpful Mr.Ditsky, our College Counselor, I have decided that I will be at-tending Penn State University Park in the fall. As I am nearingthe very end of my high school career, I have come to realize justhow great these past four years have been, and I would like totake the time to thank those who have helped me get to thispoint.

From my freshman year up until now, I have continued to growas a person through the help of my teachers and fellow class-mates. The small, close-knit feel of our school has provided mewith a sense of family. I can honestly say that I leave my family athome in the morning, only to be connected with my secondfamily here at school. The relationships I have established hereare ones that I know will continue for many years to come.

Attending Berks Catholic has opened up a whole new world ofopportunities for me. I have been able to expand my horizons byparticipating in many different clubs and activities, which haveultimately led me to meet a variety of people within our school. Ihave enjoyed not only the social portion of my time here atBerks Catholic, but also the academic curriculum that is pro-vided to the students. The work that is given to us is challengingand strenuous, which requires us to be determined and focused atall times; however, if a student finds that he or she is having ahard time, the teachers are always willing to go the extra mile tohelp us. They, along with Berks Catholic as a whole, want us tosucceed and will do anything to make sure that we will. For me,it is this extra push that has fully prepared me for the next levelin college.

It is because of all of these things that I can genuinely say that Ilove my school. I have always taken pride in the fact that I amSaint, and I always will be. I would not have wanted to spend thepast four years anywhere else. To all the donors who have madeit possible for me to receive the best education possible here atBerks Catholic, I thank you from the very bottom of my heart.

Marina Morales, Class of 2016

Michael Kolakowski (CC 1980)1. What are you doing now? What is your current position/title?

I am the owner of Kolakowski Quality Painting.

2. How do you feel that your CC education helped to get you where you are today?Do you credit any teachers/peers/classes?

My Catholic education taught me to ap-preciate family and the small things inlife. It has made me the person I amtoday, enriched by the life lessons andmoral teachings that I learned while at-tending Catholic school.

3. What advice would you give to currentstudents at Berks Catholic?

Have fun, work hard, learn, discover, ex-plore and accomplish your goals. And,though many things will change over theyears, I believe these things will remainconstant.

4. Why is it important to you to give back toBerks Catholic?

I give back to Berks Catholic because Ibelieve that Catholic education allowsthe students to grow up in a community

that supports each other.

5. Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you like to do outside of work.

I have been married to my lovely wife, Kim, for 28 years. We have a beautifuldaughter, Morgan, who is attending Temple University studying BroadcastJournalism and was a graduate of Berks Catholic. When I am not working Ienjoy spending time with my family and attending sporting events.

Kathleen Banco-Cosden (HN 1976)1. What are you doing now? What is your cur-rent position/title?

For over 25 years I have been working forComcast in various capacities. Currently, Iwork on the Outsource Vendor PerformanceManagement team which includes travel to

Call Center sites located in the US, Philippines, South America, and Mex-ico. I enjoy meeting all of the beautiful people in these countries and themulti-cultural experience. The work allows me to visit places I wouldn’thave voluntarily chosen. Primarily in the Philippines, I have toured manyWWII spots like Corregidor Island and the US/Filipino Military Cemetery inMetro Manila. The weekend pleasure trip stopovers in Tokyo and HongKong are also a bonus!

2. How do you feel that your HN education helped to get you where you are today?Do you credit any teachers/peers/classes?

In addition to my family, I have always credited the friends I made through-out grade school, high school and college for providing me with a solid andsensible foundation that I have relied upon over the last 40 years. Although Imay not have always followed a sensible path, it is strong and was alwaysthere to fall back on. The relationship building that began at Holy Name hashelped me tremendously over the course of my career and continues to thisday. It enables me to maintain a very strong personal and professional net-work.

3. What advice would you give to current students at Berks Catholic?

The students of Berks Catholic are very lucky to be a part of this exciting newphase since the merger. There are more resources available now than everbefore with more improvements on the horizon as a result of the 2016 Capi-tal Campaign. My advice to the students is to covet these days in highschool and in college, as they are very special. Take advantage of as many op-portunities that are available to you and treasure the friendships you are mak-ing. I would not have known this 40 years ago, but as the class of 1976embarks on their 40th Class Reunion this year, we have come together onFacebook and are getting a second chance to re-connect and bond with ourclassmates. It has been so much fun for all of us!

4. Why is it important to you to give back to Berks Catholic?

I never had the pleasure of putting children through school at Holy Nameand want to give back to the place that provided me with a wealth of differ-ent experiences, good and bad, and the place that taught me how to dealwith every one of those experiences.

5. Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you like to do outside ofwork.

My husband Michael and I enjoy spending time with many ofour friends and family which includes 6 beautiful nieces from mybrothers, Bob (HN’73) and Steve (HN ’84). We are a veryproud aunt and uncle. We especially love being down at theshore in Sea Isle City, NJ.
