ANFACO is a not-for-profit business association whose history goes back over a century (its origins date back to the Union ofCanned Fish and Seafood Manufacturers founded in 1904). In its vocation to serve, represent, safeguard and promote theeconomic, social and professional interests of its members, it acts as a multi-sector association, providing them with modernfacilities and qualified staff, and representing the various industries involved in the processing of fish and aquaculture derivedproducts.

Analytical ServicesOur laboratories are accredited by ENAC (National Accreditation Body) and comply with the UNE-EN-ISO/IEC 17025 standardin order to conduct physical-chemical, microbiological, toxicological and bio-molecular analysis of agri-foodstuffs, packagingtesting, as well as physical-chemical and microbiological analysis of drinking water, waste water, inland and sea water:

Food: microbiological analysis for toxins, nutrition, contaminants and allergens, and bio-molecular identification of species,GMOs, additives, oils, vinegars, etc.Fish flours and feeds: microbiological and nutritional analysis, and analysis for contaminants, meat remains, drug residues, etc.Water: microbiological and physical-chemical testing of drinking water, water supply, well water, sea water and waste water.Packaging: quality, abnormalities, seepage, etc.Equipment calibration: chambers, probes, thermometers, heaters, scales, etc.

These analytical tests are conducted and managed quickly and efficiently by highly qualified staff with sound experiencein the agri-foodstuffs industry. As a complementary service we provide our clients with specialised technical advice andassistance as well as comprehensive management of the samples from collection through to the issue of the reports onthe results.

Technological ConsultancyTechnology of Innovative and Safe Products and Processes: plant design, advice in developing functional and nutritional food, in

the application of the latest technology, in the development of new methods of food presentation, in the design of packaging for

actively controlling microorganisms, toxicological studies of contaminants, etc.

Advice on the implementation of quality assurance management and food safety: standards, norms, specifications, technical

recommendations, sensory analysis according to ISO norms, consultancy concerning food safety certification (HACCP, BRC, ISO

9000: ISO 22000; ISO 22005) development of new inspection protocols, etc.

Training and information for partners: training modules adapted to professional profiles, external cooperation through training, high-

level technical workshops, Post-graduate Masters on the Science and Technology of Fish Products Processing, provision of training

support to businesses/overseas government organisations, etc.

Technical and regulatory support with regard to environmental sustainability standards: assistance with the implementation of

environmental management systems (ISO 14001and EMAS Regulation), auditing and monitoring of the business to ensure compliance

1. The association comprises more than 220 companies operating in the fish and aquaculture products processing industry (conserves,semi-conserves, fish and sea-food salting, frozen and refrigerated products, processed fish and sea-food products, smoked fish, fishoils and fish meal, cod and salt-fish, raw materials, canning and packaging, machinery, distributors of sea food products, organisationsand associations, ancillary services and tinned produce) which brings together companies representing a major multi-sector clusterof businesses as vital for the Galician and Spanish economy as the fish and seafood processing and canning sector is. Nevertheless, itis worth noting the international aspect of ANFACO, since some of its members are companies from various European and LatinAmerican countries, although most of the members are based in Galicia and the rest of Spain.

It has set up an “ANFACO chair” specifically for teaching, training and research as well as to establish specific cooperation agreementsbetween ANFACO and the University of Vigo (Framework Agreement for Cooperation signed by both institutions on 15 March 1999).ambas entidades el 15 de marzo de 1999).

ANFACO-CECOPESCA channels the provision of technological services and R&D+I to the business network through theNational Technical Centre for Fish Products Processing (CECOPESCA). Its aim is to promote quality, research, technologicaldevelopment and innovation in the fish and aquaculture derived products canning process and to transfer the researchoutcomes to the business sector.

CECOPESCA has over 3,000 m2 of infrastructure devoted to scientific-technological activities organised into 6 differenttechnological areas through which it provides the business community with its scientific-technological services.
