What is

Android is an OS (Operating System) Like Windows 8 and Windows RT (Microsoft) and iOS (Apple)

An OS is the software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals.

The OS (plus hardware) determines what software (apps) will run E.g., Android runs Android Apps, Windows run Windows software, iPad runs iOS apps, etc.

© JB Burke 2014

What are the Android devices Smart phones

Android “owns” the market 52.5% share of Smartphone Sales US

Phablets Phablet is a smartphone form factor describing devices with a screen between 5 to 6.9 inches in size, designed to combine or straddle the functionalities of a smartphone and tablet, eliminating the need for two devices

 Tablets 7” to 12” Screens

 42.7% vs. 53.8% for iPad

Who are the Competitors Apple iPad

iOS7 is the current Operating System Frequently rated the best Always more expensive

Microsoft Surface and Surface 2 Windows 8.1 RT is the current OS

Microsoft Surface Pro Windows 8.1 is the current OS

There are a few others … Not relevant to our discussion Trust me!

Tablets vs. PC’s (Desktop & Laptop)

PC’s are now considered to be for Content Creation Documents Spreadsheets Data files Movie editing Photo post processing Tasks using more compute power & more electricity

Tablets are primarily aimed at Content Consumption Web browsing Reading news feeds Magazines Reading Books Watching TV and Movies Listening to music

What is Computer Architecture?

 Do I care?

You want to be smart(er), don’t you?

We are talking Intel x86 vs ARM CPU’s (Central Processing Unit)

This is the chip that executes instructions to make the computer do stuff

PC’s run on Intel (or AMD) chips These are CISC (Complex Instructions Set Computers)

 http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-cisc.htm#

Intel i7 processor has 731 million transistors

That’s the chip on this HP Laptop

© JB Burke 2014

What is Computer Architecture?

Tablets run on ARM chips RISC Chip (Reduced Instruction Set Computer)

Fewer transistors = lower power, longer battery life http://www-cs-

faculty.stanford.edu/~eroberts/courses/soco/projects/risc/whatis/index.html

The ARM 7 chip has 58,000 transistors My tablet has a 5-core chip = 5 ARM processors

 5x58,000=290,000Transistors (vs. 731 million?)

 Lots less power required

One main characteristic of a quality tablet … Long battery life

 8 hours and up

© JB Burke 2014

Characteristics of a Tablet

 Touch friendly Keyboard optional

Keyboard adds to weight and bulk

 Portable Light weight, travel friendly

My wife carries her 7” Nexus in her purse

Good battery life 8 hours and up – preferably more!

You’re not always near a power source

Tablet OS/Architecture Apple iOS unveiled Jan. 2007 with iPhone

 iPad delivered in 2010

Google plus other manufacturers formed the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) in 2007 About the same time as iPhone appeared

First Android version delivered in 2008 Gained quickly on Apple because of free OS More robust, customizable and unique than iOS but …

A bit more complicated and steeper learning curve. http://www.android.com/about/ http://developer.android.com/about/index.html

Windows RT Launched alongside Windows 8 on October 26, 2012 Kinda late & hasn’t gone very far (yet)

Versions of Android …

A bit about Google If you have a Gmail account (email with

[email protected]) you will have useful capabilities. You can synchronize:

 Contacts (Address list) Your Calendar

Across all your devices:o SmartPhoneo Android Tableto Laptopo Desktop

This is very convenient to keep track of life in general

© JB Burke 2014

Also email … Google email is built-in to Android tablets

You must setup your account of course

You can also add your other email account(s) You’ll need basic account setup info for this

Mail can be viewed and answered from multiple devices: SmartPhone Tablet Laptop Desktop

I set mine up so my Q.com email can only be deleted from the server via my desktop computer – so I can save what I want to keep in mail folders.

Some Android stuff to know …

There are multiple Android Tablet hardware manufacturers Unlike the iPad – Apple only

The manufacturers integrate the free Android OS with their hardware

This makes them cheaper than iPad They generally run all the Android Apps The interface (what the screen looks like out of the box) varies

from manufacturer to manufacturer. Each has a unique:

 Launcher Home screen interface

Let’s look at mine (ASUS TF300T Jellybean 4.2.1)

© JB Burke 2014

System Updates Occasionally the Android OS needs to update itself

Just like Windows updates You should do this when it’s offered

It will get to you in any case – it is PUSHED to you

Can be a longish download – just let it run Don’t let it run out of battery – plug it in!

Puts an Android icon on the screen as it runs Will add useful features, such as bug fixes, performance

improvements and security updates Recently I had an update to mine (Jelly Bean – 4.2.1) that gave

me the option of updating my home screen I like the new one better

More darn detailsMore darn detailsMore darn detailsMore darn details

Microsoft, Apple & Google are both manufacturers and developers Microsoft charges 3rd parties a fee for their Operating System

(Windows) Google doesn’t charge for Android license Apple doesn’t license iOS at all

HP, ASUS, Amazon and Samsung are tablet manufacturers Google provides Android, mfrs. tailor it to their specs

Most mfrs. Add software to their tablets to differentiate themselves from others (They want to add value)

Whereas all iPads look alike (within models)

There are now many Windows 8 tablets

 Some with keyboards, some without

Prices vary from $399 to $2399

Other devices that are out there

There are Convertible Tablets They run Windows 8.1

 With or without keyboard

 More expensive

Shorter battery life (Intel CPU – CISC)

E-readers Such as the original Kindle & Nook

 For reading books only

Not really a tablet – but a great reader Can’t run apps

 Is this what you want/need?

 Holds 1000+ books

© JB Burke 2014

Components of a Tablet An ARM CPU

These vary quite a lot Single core (like one chip) Dual or quad core (like 2 or 4 CPU’s on one chip) Higher end tablets get more complex and faster CPU’s

1 or 2GB (gigabytes) (typically) of RAM Random Access Memory This is where your apps run As always, the more the merrier (and the more expensive)

Bluetooth connectivity Short range wireless connectivity For keyboard, headphones, etc.

© JB Burke 2014

Components of a Tablet

Graphics (GPU) Graphics Processing Unit Just another darn computer chip

Puts text and pictures on the screen

Faster GPU (in more expensive tablets) makes for smoother screen experience (esp. games, movies)

 Screen Size 7”, 8”, 8.9”, 10”, 12+”

 Is bigger really better?

 Smaller is more portable

Screen resolution How many dots on the screen
