JANUARY MARCHThe animals gather on the southern Serengeti plains, dropping their calves. The plains are a short drive from&Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge and &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas.

APRIL - MAYThe herds move north, towards the central Serengeti plains and the Seronera area. The &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas camps follow.

JUNEThe herds move northwest, towards &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp. The luxury tented camps of &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas reposition themselves.

JULY - OCTOBERThe herds start heading northeast, followed by the &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas camps. The wildebeest must cross the Mara River before they reach Kenyas Masai Mara, to the west of &Beyond Kleins Camp. As the animals continue to move backwards and forwards across the river, the excitement can also be viewed from &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp and &Beyond Bateleur Camp.

NOVEMBER - DECEMBERCrossing back into the Serengeti, the Migration moves south, passing &Beyonds Kleins Camp and Serengeti Under Canvas.

The annual movement of wildebeest and other herbivores across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem consists of more than 1.5 million wildebeest, 500 000 zebra, 18 000 eland and 200 000 Thompsons gazelle. The Migration is rarely the same in terms of precise timing and direction.

    ABOUT &BEYOND

  • Sustainability initiatives at existing lodges

Environmental initiatives have been introduced at the companys

existing lodges and camps. For example, the use of LED lights has

been rolled out at &Beyond Phinda Mountain Lodge, allowing the lodge to save more than 80% on the electricity that is consumed

for lighting by the guest areas and suites.

The installation of a water bottling plant at the same lodge has

also greatly reduced the entire reserves carbon. By bottling water

on site and recycling the glass bottles, the Phinda team saves

643 kg of CO per month (7 716 kg per year), the saving on the

carbon footprint of the delivery truck that previously transported

    the water.

    Strict land management policies

&Beyond subscribes to strict land management techniques to ensure that the wildlife areas that we influence remain sustainable.

A few of our most significant areas of focus include research

and monitoring, veld management, the removal of invasive alien

plants species, the conservation of threatened plants and the

    implementation of soil conservation policies

Great Antarctic Ice Challenge&Beyond has extended its core ethos of Care of the Land to our planets oceans by sponsoring marine advocate and pioneering

swimmer Lewis Pugh in his Great Antarctic Ice Challenge, a series

of five record-breaking swims in the freezing Antarctic Ocean

to help save the Ross Sea from irreversible damage. A deep bay

situated in Antarcticas Southern Ocean, the Ross Sea is one of the

worlds most pristine marine ecosystems and is home to an array

of species found nowhere else on earth.

Pughs initiative is designed to focus the worlds attention on the

conservation of this body of water as a marine protected area

(MPA). The proposed Ross Sea MPA would cover an area of 1.35

million km (over half a million square miles) and is set to become

the largest protected area in the world, on land or on sea.

With two of &Beyonds lodges situated on tropical islands, the company is committed to marine conservation and this is just

the latest of &Beyonds efforts to protect the worlds oceans. These include the companys involvement in the formation of the

Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area off Zanzibar, as well

the conservation and study of rare green turtles and coconut

crabs at &Beyond Mnemba Island. At &Beyond Benguerra Island off Mozambique, the company supports the Dugong Emergency

Protection Project, which is aimed at ensuring the security of the

endangered dugong herds in the Bazaruto Archipelago.

    CARE OF THE LAND

    53

Care of the Land embraces &Beyonds efficiency strategy, which aims to minimise the companys physical footprint and the impact

that its operations have on the environment.

&Beyonds lodge business comprises less than 800 beds, yet it has a positive impact on more than 9 million acres of wildlife land

and sustains the conversion of more than 500 000 acres from

livestock farming and hunting to photographic wildlife safaris.

&Beyond subscribes to strict land management techniques to

ensure that the wildlife areas it influences remain sustainable.

Returning Land to Conservation Use&Beyonds first venture and the birthplace of the companys conservation model, &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve was created in 1990 with the purchase of 13 000 hectares of degraded

farmland near the coast of South Africas KwaZulu-Natal province.

Named Phinda after the Zulu word for the return, today this

protected area has grown to 23 000 hectares and is &Beyonds flagship game reserve, with vast numbers of wildlife returned to

    their natural habitat.

    Understanding our impact

&Beyonds lodges are annually subjected to an intensive sustainability audit to determine their environmental impact in

terms of water usage, electricity consumption, diesel and petrol

consumption, gas, paraffin and oil usage, firewood and charcoal

consumption and waste production and management. This allows

the company to determine lodge-specific strategies to reduce that

impact. Some examples of such initiatives are given below.

    Environmentally conscious new designs

&Beyond believes in the concept of sustainable luxury and the refurbishment and redesign of the companys lodges employs the

latest technology to ensure that our impact on the environment is

reduced as far as possible. When &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp in Kenya was extensively rebuilt in 2014, 183 square metres

(1 970 square feet) of solar panelling was installed, capable of

producing up to 9 400 litres (2 400 gallons) of hot water daily,

saving 40 000 litres (10 560 gallons) of diesel per annum, which

translates into a saving of 106 tons of CO.

A similar process was followed during the rebuilding of

&Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge in Botswana. The lodges combined solar electricity and solar hot water systems produce in

excess of 200 000 Kwh of energy per year. This will save the lodge

67 000 litres of diesel per year, which translates into a carbon

footprint saving of 180 tons of CO, an amount that the lodge

would have had to plant 4 615 tree saplings to offset

  • CONSERVATION WINS

Beginning with the companys groundbreaking conservation

achievements during the restocking of Phinda Private Game

Reserve, &Beyond has continued to take part in a number of conservation successes. The company has embarked on a variety

of pioneering conservation initiatives, both in Africa and beyond.

Some of its most comprehensive conservation victories are

    described below.

Gaur translocation in India &Beyond was at the forefront of the ground-breaking mass

translocation of 19 gaur (Indian bison) at Bandhavgarh National

Park in India, the first successful reversal of a local extinction by

means of the mass translocation of wild animals in the country.

A decade of leopard research The MunYaWana Leopard Project, a collaboration between

&Beyond and Panthera, a USA-based philanthropic association focused on the conservation of the worlds 37 species of wild

cats was conducted at &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, resulting in regulations for sustainable leopard trophy hunting

and a stricter system of permits for the control of problem

    animals.

Aders duiker and suni Breeding projects for the rare Aders duiker and endangered

suni are being run at &Beyond Mnemba Island, with the population of Aders duiker tripling in eight years and more than

250 suni relocated off the island.

    RHINOS WITHOUT BORDERS

Increasing at an alarming rate, poaching is at an all-time high in

Africa. The illegal trade in rhino horn has seen the number of these

magnificent creatures poached throughout Africa rise significantly

in recent years. In 2014, 1215 rhino were poached in South Africa

    alone, up from 1 004 in 2013, 668 in 2012 and 448 in 2011. With

a rhino killed every seven hours, more of these African icons are

now being lost to poachers every year than are being born.

&Beyond believes that translocations are fundamental to securing the ongoing survival of this endangered species. In 2013 the

company carried out the first ever private game reserve donation

of rhino to another country when it translocated six white rhino

from &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa to Botswanas Okavango Delta, which has been proven as a safe and

    successful rhino translocation habitat.

Following the success of this project, &Beyond has partnered with Great Plains Conservation to translocate up to a further hundred

rhino from South Africa to Botswana in an initiative designed to

help counter the scourge of poaching and preserve this African

icon for future generations. Recently, enough funds were raised,

and the first batch of rhino were successfully translocated to a

safe haven in Botswana. Preparations are now being finalised for

the next batch to be moved and fundraising is ongoing for future

    rhino translocations.

Funds towards this project can be donated on www.trevolta.com,

which allows donations of any amount from as little as USD 1.

    CARE OF THE WILDLIFE

    55

  • CARE OF THE PEOPLE

    AFRICA FOUNDATION

&Beyond works closely with the communities surrounding the wildlife areas where we operate, whether by interacting with

them as landlords or through community development initiatives

with its preferred social development partner, Africa Foundation.

Africa Foundation is a registered non-profit organisation with its

own board of trustees. It receives support and funding from Africa

Foundation (USA) and Africa Foundation (UK), as well as &Beyond, &Beyonds guests and independent donors. By working with local communities and not for them and by making wildlife truly benefit

the people of the land, long and trusting relationships have been

built up over the years between Africa Foundation, &Beyond and the communities surrounding its reserves.

Africa Foundation ProjectsAfrica Foundation has been working with communities adjacent

to conservation areas for over 20 years and has completed

numerous initiatives in six African countries, which are handed
