California  has  adopted  the  general  requirements  of  the  changes  to  the  ADA  2010  changes  to  comply  with  the  IBC    .  .  .

       “In  each  assembly  area  where  audible  communicaBons  is  

   integral  to  the  use  of  the  space,  an  assisBve  listening  system      shall  be  provided.”          ADA  216.10

California Building Code (CBC)      •  What  is  the  definiBon  of  an  “assembly  area?”    

   

“In  the  ADA  SecBon  106.5  it  defines  an  “Assembly  Area”  as:    Assembly  Area.    A  building  or  facility,  or  porBon  thereof,  used  for  the  purpose  of  

entertainment,  educaBonal  or  civic  gatherings,  or  similar  purposes.    For  the  purposes  of  these  requirements,  assembly  areas  include,  but  are  not  limited  to:    

Classrooms,  lecture  halls,  courtrooms,  public  meeBng  rooms,  public  hearing  rooms,    

legislaBve  chambers,  moBon  picture  houses,  auditoria,  theatres,  playhouses,  dinner  theatres,  

concert  halls,  centers  for  the  performing  arts,  amphitheaters,  arenas,  stadiums,  grandstands,  or  convenBon  centers.                                    ADA  SecBon  106.5

The  CBC  Requirements  in  comparison  •  The  minimum  number  of  receivers      

             Unlike  the  ADA  with  the  graduated  scale  of  the  number  of                receivers  that  decline  as  your  seaBng  capacity  go  upward.      

                                     The  CBC  has  held  onto  the  4%  Requirement  of  the                    total  SeaBng  Capacity  of  the  venue,  along  with  the                  25%  neck  loop  requirement  in  SecBon  11B-­‐706.3

The  CBC  Requirements  •  Permanent  and  Portable  Systems      

Permanently  installed  assisBve  listening  systems  are  required  in  areas  if:    

 (1)  They  accommodate  at  least  50  people  or,                    if  they  use  audio-­‐amplificaBon  systems,  and  

 (2)    They  have  fixed  seaBng

The  CBC  ALS  Signage  Requirements  •  Signs  to  inform  patrons  of  the  ALS          

             Each  assembly  area  is  required  by  SecBon  11-­‐B219                to  provide  assisBve  listening  systems,  shall  provide                signs  informing  patrons  of  the  availability  of  the                  assisBve  listening  system.                    These  ALS  signs  shall  comply  with  the  703.5  and                shall  include  the  InternaBonal  Symbol  of  Access                for  Hearing  loss  complying  with  CBC  11B-­‐703.2.4
