Building a Culture of Innovation at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School:

Advancing Student Learning through Cross-Curricular Technology

Integration

A Culture of Innovation and Creativity

The goal of implementing new technology at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School is to

enhance a learning culture that supports innovation, collaboration, efficiency, creativity, and

ingenuity.

Obtaining and Communicating Information

Twenty years ago, school was the place where students learned information and skills in core

subject areas such as language arts, math, science, and history. Schools functioned as content

repositories, and educators were primarily information experts who passed along to their students

what they had learned in school.

Today, information is readily available on a global scale. With a computer, cell phone, iPad, and

other personal digital devices, much of the material students once spent the entire school year

learning can be acquired in a fraction of the time. These technological resources have

democratized information, giving students direct access to media, documents and sources from

which they will build understanding and develop the 21st century skills necessary to be

successful in top colleges and the workforce of tomorrow.

Instead of focusing on providing facts and information for students to memorize and recall,

teachers are shifting their focus to helping students better evaluate, analyze, and synthesize the

information they obtain. Today, students access content from sources that have not been vetted

by the traditional publishing processes. Students now “must be able to recognize when they need

information, what kind of information they need, and where to look for it to complete a task

successfully. They must also be able to do this effectively regardless of the information’s format,

source, or location” (The Boyer Commission On Educating Undergraduates In The Research

University, 1998). It is our responsibility as educators to teach students to judge the quality of

sourced information, its accuracy and objectivity.

In addition, information literacy moves beyond students’ ability to evaluate the information they

receive to being able to communicate their own understanding and perspectives of this material

in a wide variety of media modes, genres, and forms. Instead of only having their teacher as

their main audience, students are now able to communicate their findings with others. For

example, web tools such as blogs and wikis have put students in the position of being creators as

well as consumers of published information.

Student Skills

Subject knowledge and skills continue to be necessary, but not entirely sufficient for successful

performance in life and in today’s competitive job market. Many additional traits are needed,

including initiative, accountability, and leadership. In surveys, employers rated these applied

skills as more important than basic subject knowledge (Casner-Lotto & Benner, 2006). They

Page 3: and Policies - Bishop Manogue High School...integrating iPads on a 1:1 basis is an essential step to meeting the changing needs of students. Incorporating iPads into the classroom

2

also found that most high school graduates and many college graduates are deficient in these

skills. It is important that educators align student learning environments, requirements, and

assessments to promote the acquisition of these applied skills.

In addition, the ability to function as a member of a team is key in the 21st century workplace,

and cooperative and collaborative learning have long been recognized as one of the most

consistent strategies for increased student achievement. Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock (2001)

identify cooperative learning as one of the nine most effective instructional strategies available to

classroom teachers.

Teachers can effectively promote these applied skills and collaborative experiences using

technology. Instead of passively soaking up knowledge, students can now use social networking

and participatory sites such as YouTube to interact with others, create content, and share ideas.

Students are able to cooperatively apply their knowledge by working together in the class room

and on-line.

Student Engagement

Students today have grown up in a world where mobile computers, cell phones, and other

personal digital devices are common tools, and instant messaging, blogs, and wikis are common

modes of self-expression. Because of today’s digital technology, students live a media rich,

connected, and mobile lifestyle.

Students today expect to learn in an environment that mirrors their lives and their futures—one

that seamlessly integrates today’s digital tools, accommodates a mobile lifestyle, and encourages

collaboration and teamwork in physical and virtual spaces. We must recognize that what

engages this generation of learners is very different from what may have engaged previous

generations. This disconnect between a student’s digital life and school matters because students

learn better when they are engaged, and research about what meaningfully involves students

today points to technology. Studies have shown that effective integration of technology into

teaching and learning can result in higher levels of student achievement (The Boyer Commission

on Educating Undergraduates in the Research University, 1998; Casner-Lotto & Benner, 2006).

Incorporating Technology at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School

These changes in education are profound and challenge us to re-think the way we view teaching

and learning. Education is no longer limited to an environment where a teacher lectures in front

of a classroom. Schools must now become places where students can acquire knowledge and

skills they can use to solve complex problems for the rest of their lives, and teachers must now

become collaborators in learning—leveraging the power of students, seeking new knowledge

alongside students, and modeling positive habits of mind and new ways of thinking and learning.

Because of these significant changes, it is necessary to incorporate new technology tools into the

learning and instruction at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. The school believes that

integrating iPads on a 1:1 basis is an essential step to meeting the changing needs of students.

Incorporating iPads into the classroom will help teachers and students effectively obtain and

communicate information, foster the acquisition of applied skills, encourage collaboration, and

better engage students in an active learning process.

Page 4: and Policies - Bishop Manogue High School...integrating iPads on a 1:1 basis is an essential step to meeting the changing needs of students. Incorporating iPads into the classroom

3

Incorporating iPads into the daily curriculum will help support teaching in a variety of ways.

Instead of constantly relying on worksheets and other printable materials, the vast number of

apps for the iPad provide opportunities for creating individual learning activities and interactive

materials. Teachers can better support a variety of learning styles and foster a student-centered

learning environment. The iPad also provides innovative ways to teach a language, music, and

art. Whereas teachers now have to schedule time in over-booked technology labs, with

individual iPads, students will have the ability to research and type within the classroom at any

time. Students will be able to more easily submit homework, projects, and essays electronically

which will streamline assignment collection and grading.

In addition to the many possibilities of enhancing curriculum, the incorporation of iPads has

several practical advantages too. The recording functions allow students to record lectures, create

podcasts, practice language skills, and dictate notes. These features can be especially helpful to

students who have learning disabilities. The iPad can also be used as an effective organizational

tool to help students stay prepared for school. Currently, students at Manogue carry around

backpacks full of heavy, cumbersome textbooks. The use of electronic textbooks will help lift the

burden of heavy textbooks off the backs of students. This technology will also help cut down the

amount of paper used and wasted within our school.

Although change is always challenging, with the appropriate training and support, the

incorporation of iPads on a 1:1 basis will positively contribute to the overall education of our

students and help provide them with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in

college and beyond.

Resources

Much of this information is based from Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow—Today (ACOT2) is a

collaborative effort with the education community to identify the essential design principles for

the 21st century high school by focusing on the relationships that matter most: those between

students, teachers, and curriculum.

The goal of ACOT2 is more targeted: to help high schools get closer to creating the kind of

learning environment this generation of students needs, wants, and expects.

Technology Program Policies, Acceptable Use, and School Implementation Program

Introduction

In an effort to advance the educational achievement for all students, Bishop Manogue Catholic

High School has made the decision to implement a 1:1 technology initiative with the use of the

Apple iPad tablet device. This implementation will bring the world to each student’s fingertips -

anywhere at any time - and put the student at the forefront of not only becoming 21st century

learners, but also becoming the recipients of a world-class opportunity to become responsible

digital citizens.

The policies, procedures, and information within this manual apply to all devices (iPads) and

related accessories (power cords, covers, etc.) used at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School,

including any other mobile device considered by administration to come under this policy.

Teachers may set additional requirements for use in their classrooms.

1.0 Receiving Your Tablet Device

1.1 Receiving Your Device

iPads will be distributed in August. Parents and students must sign and return the Parent

Acknowledgement of 1:1 iPad and School Technology Policies before the device can

be issued to the student. Please review the Technology Program and Policies Handbook

posted on the school’s website.

1.2 Returning Your Device

Students will return their device at the end of the school year so that they can be checked

for serviceability. Students who transfer, withdraw, are expelled, or terminate enrollment

at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School for any other reason must return their tablet

device on the date of termination. Devices must be returned in good, working condition.

Jailbroken devices or devices with no serial number would be examples of devices not

returned in good working condition. It is the sole discretion of Bishop Manogue Catholic

High School to make determinations on device condition.

1.3 Fines/Penalties

Individual school devices and accessories must be returned to the Bishop Manogue

Catholic High School Knoweldge Center at the end of the school year. Students who

transfer or who are dismissed must return their device on the date of termination. If a

student fails to return the device at the end of the school year or upon termination of

enrollment at Bishop Manogue, that student may be subject to criminal prosecution or

civil liability. The student will also pay the replacement cost of the device or, if

applicable, any insurance deductible. Failure to return the device will result in a theft

report being filed with the Sheriff’s Office.

Page 7: and Policies - Bishop Manogue High School...integrating iPads on a 1:1 basis is an essential step to meeting the changing needs of students. Incorporating iPads into the classroom

6

Furthermore, families are responsible for any damage to the device and must return the

device and any accessories to the Bishop Manogue Catholic High School Knowledge

Center in satisfactory condition. Families will be charged a fee for any needed repairs,

not to exceed the replacement cost of the device not covered by the insurance plan, i.e.

cover and cable.

2.0 Caring for Your Tablet

Students are responsible for the general care of the tablet device they have been issued by Bishop

Manogue Catholic High School. Devices that are broken or that fail to work properly must be

taken to the Knowledge Center for an evaluation of the equipment. Students are responsible for

bringing a fully charged device to school each day.

2.1 General Precautions

Each tablet device is the property of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School, and

all users are expected to abide by the policies in this handbook and those

contained in the Bishop Manogue Parent-Student Handbook.

Only use a clean, soft cloth to clean the screen, no cleansers of any type are to be

used.

Cords and cables must be inserted carefully into the device to prevent damage.

Devices must remain free of writing, drawing, stickers, or labels.

Devices must never be left in an unlocked locker or any unsupervised area.

Due to heat conditions, devices should never be left in a vehicle.

Students are responsible for keeping their device’s battery charged for school

each day and putting in sleep mode when not in use.

2.2 Carrying Devices

Protective cases have sufficient padding to protect the device during normal use

and provide a suitable means for carrying the device within the school. School

issued cases must be used with the device as designed and must be kept in good

condition. These guidelines should be followed:

Devices should always be within the protective case at all times.

School bags can hold other objects (such as folders and workbooks), but these

should be used with caution as pressure and weight on the device may result in

damage, for which the student will be responsible.

Students should never sit on or throw school bags.

2.3 Screen Care

Device screens can be damaged if subject to rough treatment. The screens are particularly

sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen. Please be mindful that devices

are sensitive to weather conditions and should not be stowed in extreme weather

conditions such as heat, cold, or rain.

Do not lean on the top of the device when it is closed.

Page 8: and Policies - Bishop Manogue High School...integrating iPads on a 1:1 basis is an essential step to meeting the changing needs of students. Incorporating iPads into the classroom

7

Do not place anything on or near the device that could put pressure on the screen.

Do not place anything in the carrying case that will press against the cover.

Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth.

Do not bump the device against lockers, walls, car doors, floors, etc.

3.0 Using Your Tablet

Tablet devices are intended for school use each day. In addition to teacher expectations for

device use, My Backpack, announcements, calendars, the Bishop Manogue website, and the

Parent-Student Handbook may be accessed using the tablet device. Students must be responsible

to bring their device to all classes, unless specifically instructed not to do so by their teacher.

3.1 Not Having Your Device at School

If students fail to bring their device to school, they are responsible for completing course

work as though they had their device with them. Students who forget to bring their device

to school may be issued a warning; multiple instances of this may result in detention.

3.2 Device Maintenance & Repair

Loaner devices may be issued temporarily to students if it is determined from the

Knowledge Center that the device needs to be kept for a period of time for repair.

Students should seek help as soon as an iPad problem surfaces. Unresolved

problems can magnify support issues and can cause additional problems.

Students are expected to be and will be taught how to be ACTIVE participants in

problem resolution. The Knowledge Center consultant may facilitate the student

in performing diagnostic tests and re-imaging the iPad if necessary.

If the Miner Minds request cannot be resolved immediately, the request will be

put into the queue and assigned a priority level. Currently there are three defined

levels:

Priority 1 (emergency) - problems that prevent a user from performing school

work in a normal fashion: a user’s iPad crashes or freezes, Wi-Fi or authentication

issues. The Miner Minds guarantees a response and assistance as soon as possible

for individuals with P1 issues. Should a loaner become necessary, one will be

provided through the Miner Minds.

Priority 2 (medium) - loss of charger, battery life. The Miner Minds will respond

to the issue in priority order within regular school hours.

Priority 3 (low) – problems that include technical or “how to” questions,

keyboard / Bluetooth issues, in priority order below P1 and P2 issues. Students

must request permission to put additional apps on the device.

Page 9: and Policies - Bishop Manogue High School...integrating iPads on a 1:1 basis is an essential step to meeting the changing needs of students. Incorporating iPads into the classroom

3.3 Charging Your Device

Devices must be brought to school each day in a fully charged condition. Students need

to charge their devices each evening. Repeated violations may result in a school

consequence. Before or after school or during lunch period students may charge their

device at the Miner Minds for a minimal charge.

3.4 Screensavers & Background Images

All students are to maintain their name and grade on the lock screen image. Students may

customize the home scree only. The device must remain pass code protected.

3.5 Sound, Music, Games, Apps

Students are permitted to utilize the device for personal use. However, doing so cannot be

distracting to the educational setting. During school classroom hours it should be used

strictly for educational activities. The device should not include any games, music, or

apps that would conflict with the mission and philosophy of Bishop Manogue. Use of the

device in school must be primarily for education.

Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher

for instructional purposes.

Personal listening devices (head phones, ear buds) are not permitted to be used

with the device during the school day unless permitted by the teacher.

Music is allowed on the device and can be used at the discretion of the teacher.

Students/families may purchase apps for personal use. However, this must be

done using the student’s school Apple ID account.

Bishop Manogue Catholic High School is not responsible for lost or damaged

applications or data related to personal use. Syncing to a home computer may

result in school apps being deleted, and the student may be subject to disciplinary

action.

3.6 Printing

Wireless printing will be available with the tablet devices at Manogue. Printers will be

available for student use in the Knowledge Center. Printing at home will require a

wireless printer, proper settings on the device, and the correct application.

3.7 Wireless Networks and Access

Students are allowed to set up wireless networks on their devices. This will assist them

with device use while at home.

Students will register for and attend one of ten orientation sessions scheduled to begin at 1:00pm

on July 28, 29, 30, 31 or August 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, or 12. Students may sign up on our website. Each

session is limited to 50 students, and each student must be pre-registered, so his/her iPad will be

available at that session.

May my son/daughter use his personal iPad or another device?

Students will be required to have and use their school-issued iPads throughout the academic day.

Students may bring an additional device, but that device does not replace the iPad for use at

Bishop Manogue Catholic High School.

Where should the iPad be kept when it is not needed for classes, e.g., during after-school

activities?

Students should keep their iPad in their locked student locker, where various security measures

are in place, in their locked gym locker, or in another secure place. Students are responsible for

safely storing their iPad during all co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Coaches and

moderators can assist students in securing their iPad or other valuables, but the student is

responsible for informing the coach when he is unable to secure his iPad or other valuables.

Under no circumstances should an iPad be left in an unlocked or unsupervised area.

What happens if the iPad is broken?

The school-issued iPad will be repaired by Bishop Manogue Catholic High School for a fee of

$50. The damaged iPad and a check for $50 made payable to Bishop Manogue Catholic High

School must be taken to the Knowledge Center on the next school day. Do not attempt to repair

the iPad or take the iPad elsewhere for repair.

What happens if the iPad is lost or stolen?

In cases of theft, vandalism and other criminal acts that occur outside the purview of Bishop

Manogue Catholic High School, a police report, or in the case of a fire, a fire report MUST be

filed by the student or parent before Bishop Manogue will replace the iPad. A copy of the

appropriate report must be provided to the grade level Assistant Principal. After the first such

incident, the family will be responsible for half of the cost of replacement (approximately $350).

For any subsequent replacement, the family will be responsible for the full cost.

May my son/daughter use a case of his choice?

No. The protective case provided with the school-issued iPad has been selected for its ability to

best protect the iPad from damage under normal use and to provide a suitable means for carrying

it. The iPad should always be stored in its school-issued protective case. The cost of repair of an

iPad damaged while not in its school-issued case will be borne by the family. The student may

not put any mark on or affix anything to the iPad or case.

offerings. Over time, the goal is have a digital option for every school textbook.

To what extent will my son/daughter be able to customize his device?

Bishop Manogue Catholic High School understands that gradually the device will be

personalized by the student user. Students may personalize their home screen only, apps, music,

etc., if such personalization is in good taste and in compliance with Bishop Manogue Catholic

High School technology policies. The Bishop Manogue approved lock screen must be used at all

times. Note: Attempting to “jail break” their iPad is prohibited.

Is any software banned or forbidden?

Software or Apps that do not conform to Bishop Manogue Catholic High School standards are

not permitted. Many apps that may not be used in the classroom or Knowledge Center are,

however, appropriate for non-academic use (e.g., games, music, hidden file, etc.). Hidden files

are those applications which internally password protect files, folders, or applications on the

device. These are strictly prohibited. Any app that conforms to Bishop Manogue standards may

be loaded onto the iPad.

that students are properly trained in and comfortable with the use of graphing calculators, Bishop

Manogue Catholic High School will continue to require their purchase in certain classes.

What happens if my son/daughter forgets to charge his iPad?

Among the reasons why Bishop Manogue chose the iPad is its long battery life: up to ten hours

of normal use. Students should charge their iPads nightly. They may also take one or more of the

following measures: 1) Keep a charger in their backpacks. A student should not leave his iPad

unattended while it is charging. 2) Use the charging station in the Knowledge Center. A student

gives his iPad and student ID to the Tech Team, who will charge the iPad. In this instance the

student may leave his iPad unattended while it is being charged. 3) Purchase an external battery

pack/charger.

Will my son/daughter be able to keep his iPad over the summer?

A refresh must be completed by the Miner Minds after each school year. The Miner Minds will

notify students of the refresh dates and will request the device for a short period of time to

complete this task. Following the refresh of the device, any student who has returned the

following school year’s Bishop Manogue Catholic High School 1 to 1 iPad Program Parent

and Student Agreement may keep his/her iPad during the summer. Otherwise, the iPad, case,

and charger will be collected on the last day of school and stored during the summer.
