PhilosophyBishop Manogue Catholic High School is a faith-based community working together for the education of all students. Make. Your. Mark.

Simple, yet bold. Bishop Manogue Catholic High School has been building leaders since 1948. We have built leaders in the traditional sense of the word - civic, community, business, and government – and leaders in a service understanding of the word – doctors, lawyers, educators, and military or law enforcement. Now, as we approach the 2019-2020 school year, we look to building leaders in a new way.

The class of 2023 will begin high school with a personalized device of their choice. Teachers have been preparing for the digital initiative for a year and will continue training throughout the next two years. They will all complete Google Level I certification by June of this year, Google Level II certification by June of next year, and teacher leaders are attending conferences hosted by ISTE, NCCE, and CUE, all leaders in the field of Educational Technology. As always, our goal is to be thorough and prepared as we approach a new way of teaching and learning.

The pillars of our Educational Technology program are designed to intentionally honor our Catholic tradition and our history of building leaders. They are:

P R I N C I P A L’ S L E T T E R4

Brianne M. Thoreson | Principal

Technically Traditional We are a Catholic School. Catholic Schools are known for their traditional education and college preparation - it’s what we do. We are also agents for change. We will provide all of the traditional elements of a Catholic college preparatory education while using the technical tools required to be successful in the modern world.

Digital Humanity We embrace, with equal enthusiasm, the digital world and our humanity. Technology is a tool to enhance our learning and achievement within a community, and in community with one another.

Responsible Citizens Responsible citizenship has always been a part of Catholic school communities. In the 21st century, that transforms to responsible digital citizenship and learning to harness the power of technology for productivity and positivity while avoiding its pitfalls.

Educationally Innovative Technology provides an oppor-tunity to teachers and students to become innovators. As educators we can utilize technology to be innovative in our curriculum delivery, and students can use it to be innovative in their learning and creative processes.

I graduated from high school twenty-one years ago this June.  I took a hyper modern “Digital Literacy” class at the time, where I was required to take apart a gigantic hard drive from an off-white, Microsoft tower that sat on a floor and had a floppy disc drive and an oh-so-modern CD drive. I was also required to type at the proficient speed of 60 words per minute.  The class of 2019 will graduate this spring with cell phones that can do more in thirty seconds than my computer could in a semester. They have tools that can take them farther faster than many of us could have imagined. It is time for us to look to building leaders who are innovators, creators, and producers, students who are ready to contribute to a future fueled by technology and global connections. It is time for us to help a new generation Make Their Mark.

Dear Alumni and Friends of Bishop Manogue,

It was a productive first semester back home with my Bishop Manogue Family, and I’ve enjoyed having opportunities to connect with the exceptional Alumni, supporters, and friends who Make Their Mark on our community and beyond. Being away for so many years helps me appreciate how special Bishop Manogue is.

In this issue of the Miner Messenger, we’re proud to highlight just a few of the achievements from our incredible Alumni. From personal accomplishments to professional successes, our Manogue family is certainly Making Their Mark near and far.

Being an alumni of Bishop Manogue is a common thread shared by some of the most considerate, accomplished and authentic individuals I’ve met…individuals who continue to do good and pave the way for others to do the same. Learning about the reasons why Bishop Manogue remains an organization that is close to the hearts of many is what inspires and drives our purpose to create not only an incredible school but a compassionate and thriving community.

I’m proud to announce that we are in the primary stages of developing our strategic plan. I’ve enlisted our Board of Directors, Diocese, leadership, administration, and community members to participate in a process to set strategic and intentional goals that will advance the mission and vision of Bishop Manogue. This strategic planning journey is crucial to the future of Bishop Manogue and our pursuit to foster an environment where students feel empowered, inspired and willing to leave a lasting impression on the lives ahead of them.

I appreciate your continued support of our Bishop Manogue Family as we work to ensure that our beloved school reaches its full potential. We look forward to sharing our progress with you all and encourage you to engage with Bishop Manogue in any way you can. Please continue to keep our school in your prayers, and I sure hope to see you soon.

Blessings,

Matthew J. Schambari

A G I N G & AW E S O M EIn January 2019, Ky Sisson launched Aging & Awesome on KTVN-Channel 2, a new

television show combining our senior citizens and storytelling.

Ky Sisson ‘11 and his family own the in-home senior care agency Lend-A-Hand, which opened in 1992 when Ky was born. After graduating from Manogue he studied Broadcast Journalism and Christian Theology at Biola University. He formerly was a reporter and personality on Reno’s KTVN-Channel 2 News.

The Beginning: Miner TV

TV people love to ask TV people, “Where was your first gig?” It’s one of those staple, probing questions others in the industry ask to get a jist of where you came from, but more importantly, where you might be going.

I used to consider my first gig First Business News, a nationally syndicated program who found a story I did on YouTube and paid me to freelance at 20 years old.

But if I truly look back, my first gig was in front of a green screen in a room full of computer-class stu-dents with a Powerpoint presen-tation prompter and single angle camcorder at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School.

The anchor desk was draped with turf-like carpet and a microphone

sat politely on top. My mother bought an odd knick-knack for the show...a ship wheel turned into a deco-rative clock. I added it to the ambiance of the set.

Ky and Mason in the Mornings was my first gig. We had a “fun-fact” segment and call-in giveaways to get the crowd engaged. It was a hit and where I found out TV was for me.

Ky the Traffic Guy

If you would have talked to the college graduating Ky of 2015, he would have told you in-depth, investigative journalism was his future and a shelf full of Emmys his destiny.

I didn’t choose to work on a morning show. KTVN-Channel 2 had that position open when I needed it. I quickly learned how I was pretty good at the fun-loving feature pieces that tell a story of an ordinary person doing extraor-dinary things. I also had a lot of fun giving people a heads up of what was happening in town over the weekend. That’s what morning viewers wanted and I could deliver.

A year-and-a-half into working at KTVN-Channel 2, I was offered a promotion to be the new traffic anchor in the mornings. It was a great opportunity to start a new and needed brand in the com-munity. I was excited to have a project to develop from scratch. “Ky the Traffic Guy” rolled off the tongue. When I accepted this job, I saw it as a way to drift from “news” and build a brand of entertaining information. I had my own segment! Exactly what I wanted. This is going to be fun!

Compassion Driven, Quality Care

My time at Channel 2 News was short lived, about two years. I am extremely close with my family, especially my mother, Tammy. She’s a pioneer in Nevada’s senior care industry and has an amazing heart for seniors. She needed a hand with her “first born” as she calls it, Lend-A-Hand Senior Services, founded in 1992. We go into the homes of seniors and help with non-medical, day-to-day needs. Lend-A-Hand has served thousands of seniors and employed so many wonderful people in the last 26 years.

When family calls, I answer. If I didn’t, I would have regretted my selfishness for many years. I took over Lend-A-Hand in January of 2018, and have learned what an incredible ministry it is...and how beautiful our seniors are.

Let not your heart be troubled.

If Lend-A-Hand has taught me anything, it’s that aging is challenging. The struggles of getting older are life-changing...losing a spouse, your health, your mobility, and even your home. This is traumatizing

showcasing the brilliant, wonderful personalities—the love, the passion for life that our senior community has. Yes, aging is challenging, but there are ways to be aging and awesome.

I have been amazed how this all came about. From KTVN, to Lend-A-Hand, and now my own show. I am a firm believer that nothing is coincidental, everything is providential. For the young and old, God is guiding your footsteps. He cares about you. He loves you Let not your heart be troubled.

Aging & Awesome airs weekly on KTVN-Channel 2, Saturday evenings at 7 p.m.

When family calls, I answer. If I didn’t, I would have regretted my selfishness for many years. I took over Lend-A-Hand in January of 2018, and have learned what an incredible ministry it is...and how

to many, unearthing a stark reality most do not consider...everyone is getting older, an undeniable fact of life.

Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled.” Simple, yet profound. Jesus gives us hope beyond this troubling life. I have been given the opportunity to share this with the seniors we serve and have been inspired by our work at Lend-A-Hand to reach a greater audience with this message.

Aging & Awesome was born January of 2019. The show’s main purpose is to inform, enlighten, and inspire our senior community and their families. It’s

HERB SANTOS, JR. ‘81

As part of Nevada’s goal to attract more interna-tional travelers to Nevada from emerging markets, Nevada State Tourism Commissioner, Herb Santos, Jr., ‘81, traveled to India as part of a USA Tourism Trade Delegation. Commissioner Santos met with numerous tourism stakeholders in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

M I N E R SO N T H E M O V EWe’re so proud of our alumni and love hearing from you! Here are just a few profiles on the amazing things Miners are doing in their communities, in their professions, at home and more.

Santos represents Nevada in India

In addition, Commissioner Santos was interviewed by the media in all three cities answering questions regarding travel to Nevada.

India is an emerging tourism market for the United States and especially Nevada. In 2017, the United States witnessed 1.29 million visitors from India, positioning India as the number 11 slot in terms of visitor arrivals. The average Indian tourist spends approximately four weeks when they travel to the United States and spend over $7,000 per visit, ranking India sixth in the United States for foreign travelers. The Indian tourist is looking at exploring more hands on, outdoor and adventurous locations, like the many destinations found in Nevada.

Commissioner Santos also met with members of the US Embassy and Consulate in India to discuss the issues concerning the current visa procedures and time parameters for foreign travelers traveling to the United States.

Last, Commissioner Santos met with several Indian sports representatives to explore potential international sporting events to be held in Nevada in the future.

T H E B A C K L O T What started as a creative project to make better-fitting clothes for her son, quickly

transformed into Manogue Alum, Emma (McElroy) Menesini ‘07 launching her own

popular boutique clothing brand, The Back Lot.

Miner Messenger: First off, we know that you come from a long line of Manogue Miners. Tell us about your family!

Emma: Yes! I’m proud to say my entire family attended and graduated from Manogue: mom, Raenell (Haire) McElroy ‘79, dad, George McElroy ‘80, brother Cody McElroy ‘03 and his wife Gabby (Thompson) McElroy ‘02, brother Manny McElroy ‘04, plus, all of my aunts and uncles. After I graduated in 2007, I earned a degree in Human Development and Family Studies and Spanish from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2012. I married my husband, Justin in September of 2013 and we now have two boys, Bentley, three years old, and Luke, who is seven weeks old.

MM: What inspired you to start making children’s clothing?

EM: I never pictured myself as a business owner, let alone running a clothing line, but I always loved working with my hands and being creative. After I had Bentley, I was having a hard time finding clothes that fit him because he was small for his age. I found a few indie pattern makers on Etsy that had downloadable PDF clothing pat-terns for kids and figured I would

give it a try. I showed my sister-in-law a few things I had been making and she really encour-aged me to take my sewing more seriously.

I decided to start a small side business to help contribute to our family financially while I stayed home. I took some patterns I had purchased and altered the fit and style to fit my vision and got to work. I had my first ‘launch show’ in my mom’s backyard in October of 2016. By summer of 2017, I had designed a whole line.

MM: It appears like you’re growing! What are your plans for the future of the business?

EM: Each season I come out with weather-appropriate designs, my most popular being girls’ rompers and unisex hoodies. This summer, I designed my first men’s and women’s tees and worked with the same company to have them small-batch manufactured in California. I pride myself in working with other small businesses and buying all my materials and supplies from US companies.

My ultimate goal is to have my own custom fabric milled in the US, and a location in Reno where

my designs can be made, and I can employ other women. My mom works for EDAWN and we are both passionate about sustaining our local economy and providing opportunities for women.

MM: Any advice for young entrepreneurs?

EM: Find your why and stick to it. Give yourself LOTS of grace, and allow yourself to readjust your schedule and expectations often! Ask lots of questions, and never feel embarrassed or ashamed to ask ANYONE for help or advice. I would also encourage them to cover their bases legally. Get your business license, tax number, re-search any safety or labeling info that applies to your field. So many skip this process, but it is so worth it especially if you want to grow your company.

Find The Back Lot by visiting shopthebacklot.com  and on Instagram @ShopTheBackLot. Items are also stocked inside Stork Baby Boutique in Reno, NV which is owned by Manogue Alum, Marie (Canfield) O’Brien ‘06.

We are pleased that our goal of keeping the tuition rate versus the actual cost to educate a student at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School was maintained in this fiscal year. Meanwhile, we were able to make principal payments toward debt reduction totaling over $415K, and increase our capital reserves to $596K. With consistent enrollment, strong budgeting, stewardship and key development, we believe this upward momentum will continue.

We had several capital improvement projects come to completion totaling over $383K. A large portion of these improvements were equipment purchases such as: soccer player shelters, two security cameras installed in the weights room, three mobile com-puter labs, 30 Intel Next Unit computers for the

downstairs lab, four Intel Mini PC office computers and an 86” Hitachi Touch TV for the Art Department. Building and land improvements were made such as: new lockers in PE locker rooms, safety window tinting throughout the building and concrete stairs outside the batting facility. The baseball fields also saw major updates made possible through the support of our generous donors. These facilities and equipment improvements enhance the environment for our students, families and visitors throughout the year.

Once again, we are blessed to offer financial assis-tance or discounts to 3 in 5 students who attend BMCHS with the full realization that providing our students with an opportunity to access a faith-based, college-preparatory education is our top priority.

These accomplishments can only be met through the dedication of our supporters. Thank you for investing in the future!

Casey Sullivan ‘81 shares how the IRONMAN triathlon made a mark

on his personal, professional and family life.

Casey Sullivan is no stranger to setting and accomplishing goals. As a successful business owner, community member and family man, he is used to working through challenges to gain valuable insight along the way.

Two years ago, he was craving a new challenge to jumpstart his overall wellness. Rather than incorporating a few more workouts and healthy meals into his routine, he set his am-bitions a bit higher… Casey set out to train for and complete an IRONMAN Triathlon.

The IRONMAN Triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile run, raced in that order and without a break. After researching what it took to prepare for the race, he found he had a two-year journey ahead of him… so he got to training.

“I literally came from the couch,” Sullivan recalled. “I’ve cycled for a long time, so I had the base of the bike. But, the first time I tried to swim for a workout, I only made it about 25 yards. That’s when I enrolled in swim lessons.”

The workouts and training continued and Sullivan was ready to compete in his first half IRONMAN, a necessary stepping stone to the full IRONMAN Triathlon, or what Sullivan refers to as “the most humbling race I’ve ever done”.

After a strong start in the half IRONMAN race, it came time for the run and his stamina began to dwindle.“The fourth part of a triathlon is the food and water. I didn’t prepare and became ex-tremely dehydrated and weak.”

As he staggered through the run, more and more competitors passed him, including a 73-year-old woman. “As I was getting passed by her, I thought, ‘I’m never going to do this again,’ but that woman cheered me on and motivated me to finish. That’s when I learned that everybody helps everybody at some point in time during these races. She motivated me to work harder for my next race.”

Casey’s team members at The Tamarack Junction took notice of his intense training. Inspired by his dedication, they too wanted to begin training as a team and work toward a goal. Sullivan purchased Garmin training watches for those interested so they could all track each other’s progress. The team would meet at the Tamarack Junction and go on weekly group runs. From there,

FAVORITE MINER MEMORY: “When my son, Keegan ‘13, graduated and we invited every-one to the stage for the Legacy award, including my sister, (Brigid Sullivan Pierce ‘82) her twins and my sons, Kyle ‘07 and Connor ‘10. It was a great sense of accom-plishment and one of my favorite memories as a BMCHS parent.”

A L U M N I N E W S 2 9

‘Team Tamarack’ rallied together and completed the Reno Tahoe Odyssey, a 178-mile relay race that loops through Reno, Tahoe and Virginia City.

“When our team finished, every-one was so excited!” Sullivan exclaimed. “I never would have thought this would have an impact on the whole workplace, we had people from all departments coming together for one goal.”

With a Sprint Triathlon, Olympic Triathlon, Half-IRONMAN and a Reno Tahoe Odyssey under his belt, the time came for the main event, the race he’d be training and preparing for two years.

Sullivan arrived in Tennessee to complete in The Little Debbie IRONMAN Chattanooga on October 1, 2018. The competitors were devastated to hear that the swim portion of the race was canceled due to unsafe water levels and contamination caused by flood-ing. “At first I was let down, but I learned triathlons are about what you’re given that day.”

Although feeling strong on the bike, Casey quickly became weary of the run. He had some hip pain and wasn’t able to prepare for the marathon as planned. To keep his energy up he packed a few unlikely tools like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and a toothbrush.

“At 13 miles, I would brush my teeth,” Sullivan said. “It gives you a feeling of refreshing your body which makes it easier to keep going.”

At mile 22, Sullivan came to a bridge and noticed a female competitor walking slowly, covering her eyes. She had vertigo and the high bridge was making her feel uneasy. “I asked her how I could help, and we walked and talked as we made it over the bridge.” Admittedly Sullivan said that helping this woman make it over the bridge made him feel better too.

“That’s what this race is,” he explains. “You’re running with people and everyone hits a point where they feel they can’t go on, but someone always comes to pick you up.”

At mile 24 Casey was drained and unenthusiastic. “A guy ran up by me and told me that once I came to the finish line carpet, to really slow down, live in the moment and high five as many people as I could. It turned out to be great advice,” he recalled. As he made his way to the finish, Casey heard the words “Casey Sullivan, first time from Reno Nevada, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!”

While the moment may have been fleeting, the lessons learned and perspective gained from his IRONMAN journey have made a lasting mark: Set your goals and make them achievable. “You can’t do an IRONMAN from the couch with no training. It takes a series of small goals and smaller races. By setting achievable goals, the more likely you’ll be to reach them.”

“There’s no doubt that the friends I’ve made during this journey and the people who helped me, like the 73-year-old woman on the course, were all examples of God in action. It’s important to slow down and recognize these enjoy-able moments.”

Sullivan also knows that with triumph also comes a great deal of sacrifice. The support of his wife and family were crucial, especial-ly during the races. “My wife was there, ringing cowbells, cheering at every exchange point,” he said.

So, what’s the next goal for Casey Sullivan? “Shooting a 72 in golf!”
