  • 1. Analysing elements of amusic videoCostume, Setting and Location and Represntation

2. Costume Costumes in music videos need to be specific to the genre, and this isnecessary so that the audience recognizes the genre and this allows themt gain interest to the song quicker. If the costumes are genre-specific andattractive to the audience, this will help the artist gain a larger fan base. Examples or genre specific costumes are the skinny jeans, hoodies or blazersand checked shirts are specific to indie rock. Baggy and designers clotheswith showy jewellery represents hip hop. house/ electro/ drum and bassmusic usually has ordinary costumes, like t-shirts, jeans and trainers. 3. CostumeCalvin Harris Need your love (Electro house)Oasis Wonderwall (Indie/Britpop)YG ft Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and Rich Homie Quan My Hitta (Hip hop) 4. Location & Setting Location and setting also needs to be specific to the genre so that it isrecognizable for the fans of a specific genre. The location is anotherimportant element of music videos and it has to be able to fit in with thestory behind the song, as well a the story the video tells. Grime videos are usually on the street(or outside) and it is in the dark, whilepop songs are usually very bring and in desirable, colourful and fun place. As this is what the audience expects, going against the norms within thegenre may lead fans to lose interest/ attraction. 5. Location & SettingUK Grime/ Rap UK Pop 6. RepresentationGender Genre representation in a key concept of music videos and I the analysis ofthem. Female representation in music videos are likely to go two ways; the womanbeing subjected to male gaze or the woman demanding that she is notrepresented in that way by being direct and dominant in the video. Genres such as hip hop and bashment represent woman as sexual objectsmostly. This may be due to the genre being mainly male dominated. Pop, R&B and house music is very different, as there is a lot of female artists inthis genre who demand to not be viewed this way and demand attentionwith their eyes, through looking directly in to the camera, even though thewomen are still very beautiful. 7. ConclusionThere are many elements o different genres of music videos, that needto be considered while making a music video. This is because it needs tobe recognisable to the audience as that genres, to attract the audiencethat are already fans of that genre. Also, the better a music video , theremore of a chance that it will promote the artist and their songs to selltheir music and related products. The element for the genres are rarelynon0specific and this creates a risk of the artist not keeping the attentionof the audience they have attracted. Although, well established artistmay be able to get this done, for example, Nicki Minaj Moment for lifevideo. The video is a good illustration of the song, but the setting (acastle/fairy tail type mansion) and her costume (blue prom dress), as wellas the representation of women (her being glorified by Drake, but notvery sexually), all go against the norm of hip hop music videos.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7GW8TYCEG4
